Introduction

Welcome to your September Issue Welcome to your September edition and the “exam results” and “back to school” routines for many families. 2020 will be remembered for numerous reasons, perhaps none more so than for the thousands of teenagers missing out on their GCSE and A Level exams this year, and then hoping that their final grades are fair and sufficient to enable them to move on to the next stage on their learning journey. I just wonder whether or not the “Gap Year” of travelling widely before entering higher education will become a thing of the past? Before you go any further, however, and start making lists of who will get what seventeen weeks from now, (Christmas, if you’d not yet had time to think so far ahead!) just relax with your favourite magazine … and enjoy the month ahead.

Claire x

A warm welcome to our September issue and, as high summer passes into autumn, we wait with bated breath, (behind a colourful array of face masks) for the second spike of the Covid-19 pandemic to strike. An air of extreme caution can still be felt in places, yet incredible footage reaches us now and again of groups of people mixing and drinking, without a care or a facemask in sight. This past six months has certainly confirmed the old saying, “There’s nowt so queer as folk”! As the pandemic continues remorselessly to affect everyone, overseas travel continues to take an enormous hit this year. Holidays within the British Isles will have hardly ever been so popular. The glorious Lake District is this year’s destination for our family, bringing to mind the fact that our road journey will no doubt be long and tedious. Car drivers towing caravans will abound and I salute you – we’re right behind you all the way! Enjoy the read!

H

ow often do we hear the cliché, “An Englishman’s home is his castle”? There’s no doubt that, as a nation, we seem to be pretty good at ‘fencing ourselves in’ when we feel like it – pulling up the drawbridge and cosying ourselves behind that Leylandii hedge.

Yes, there are plenty of us who would rather look out from our property and see other people walking by, but the ‘protecting what we’ve got’ mentality has meant many successful

businesses having been based on the boundary fence / hedge / wall around our little space. Add to that the feeling that our garden area can / should be able to be used as another room (if the weather allows), then we can see how the firms creating patios, sheds, porches and all manner of outside furniture have been able to prosper, as we seek “the great outdoors” (once the rain holds off for more than a few days!) set amidst perfectly groomed lawns and flower beds. Inside the home, more and more attention is being paid to the ways in which we can make ourselves more living space, by adding the conservatory or making that ‘dead space’ in the loft into a fabulous extra bedroom or two. Those partition walls can disappear and hey presto! … you’ve got yourself that perfect large lounge you’ve always wanted. Replace those windows, re-tile the bathroom, change those kitchen units, get a new staircase … the list goes on! Our castles are forever being beautified … and isn’t it great?! This month, we’re looking at our living spaces, inside and out, and the myriad ways in which our local craftsmen ply their trades to make our homes and gardens our pride and joy. Keep up the home improvements – keep it local!

Be a Bright Spark

BY COLEEN EVERITT, ALTO ELECTRICAL LIMITED

HEED ALTO ELECTRICAL’S SOUND ADVICE

S

ince the current lockdown started, people have had lots of time on their hands and we have seen a huge surge in people trying their hand at DIY. What’s more, we have also seen a surge in calls to correct DIY work over the lockdown period, from unsuccessful light replacements, to drilling through cables! We try and assess the damage over the phone and will either attend the same day, if it is an emergency, or book the job in to the diary if it is not urgent.

Some tips on how to avoid DIY disasters: ■ When drilling, avoid “electrical safe zones”. These are horizontal and vertical from any electrical fitting, and can be on either side of the wall. The top six inches of the wall, next to the ceiling, and six inches from any corners are all safe zones. If you drill here, you risk going through a cable. ■ If you have a go at something, and don’t get it quite right, call in a professional, but just be honest! You’re not going to get into trouble, and knowing where to look for a fault can save a lot of time, therefore costing less when the bill comes in. ■ If you are going to change an electrical fitting, make sure you identify your cables before taking the old fitting off, and make sure you tighten

your terminals properly. Loose connections are the biggest cause of electrical house fires. ■ If you don’t know how to do something, ask for professional advice. Alto Electrical are always happy to advise and all advice is free!

Finally, a lovely recommendation Local villager, Matt Homewood, has been working on a massive self-build extension on his home in Tongue End, near Bourne, and before even starting, he had consulted with Alto Electrical and had his home tested to see what wiring he would be able to keep, and which parts would need to be upgraded. Working with Matt every step of the way, Alto Electrical regularly inspected and, in some cases, altered Matt’s work. And when the cables were in and ready to go, it was Alto Electrical who made the final terminations, tested the installation, and notified building control of the work. Matt explains: “When I was choosing an electrician for my self-build, I was looking for someone who was reasonably priced and who I could work with during the various phases of building. Alto have been excellent, their standard of work is fantastic, they are prompt, tidy, the staff were most accommodating, and the price was right. If I need any advice, I know I can ring if needed. I cannot recommend them highly enough.”

Property News

Plans for a Sale

O

ur research has shown that buyers overwhelmingly prefer floorplans on property details, in addition to the usual description and written dimensions. There are several good reasons behind this preference, which is why we always feature floorplans on our particulars. Where several properties are competing for a buyer’s attention, a floorplan always makes an immediate impression. The layout of a property is a major consideration when choosing a new home and cannot adequately be described by words and room sizes alone. It is the relationship between the rooms in a property that can make the difference between a comfortable and attractive home and a purely functional one. People make decisions on how a property “feels” as much as they consider its size. Several smaller rooms are often more practical than one impressively large one, particularly when there is a family to consider. Only floorplans can accurately relay how

BY PAUL BRIGGS

the accommodation actually “works” in practice, illustrating how it could complement the needs of a buyer. Conversely, in instances where a floorplan alerts a purchaser to a blatantly unsuitable property, fruitless viewings can be avoided. This helps to improve the ratio of viewings that actually become sales, saving a great deal of time and frustration. We also have examples of buyers having bought a property that might have otherwise appeared unsuitable, but the floorplan helped the buyer to visualise adaptability in the accommodation that encouraged them to view. Indeed, Rightmove reports that property listings with a floorplan receive 60% more interest than those without. Floorplans suggest an open approach to property marketing. No longer do buyers have to translate euphemistic “agent speak”. After all, part of your agent’s job is to match the right buyer to the right property without recourse to flowery (mis) descriptions, saving everyone time, and reducing the stress of moving home.

Resin driveways are a long-lasting and easy-tomaintain option to transform the front of your home. An eco-friendly alternative, thanks to the non-toxic materials used, and available in a range of colours, a resin driveway is naturally draining, meaning no more puddles from heavy rainfall. They are highly resistant to rust, oil, corrosion, salt and cracking, and are also the safest option, being resistant to abrasion, slipping, indentation and ignition. The block paving driveways provided by EcoDrives are becoming an increasingly popular choice, due to the versatile design opportunities. Block paving is available in a wide range of styles and patterns, meaning they can be used to create a truly unique design, fitting your individual needs and taste. This type of surface is very durable and can withstand heavy use and harsh weather conditions, while only requiring occasional cleaning to keep it looking its best. It prevents surface water build-up due to the porous nature of the materials used, allowing for a more eco-friendly block paving service. Whether you are looking for something subtle or eye-catching, Eco-Drives Ltd are confident you will find a driveway that fits your requirements and complements your home. Their prices are very competitive and their service is friendly, professional and high quality. To discuss your requirements, please call 01775 888 336 and check out their gallery at info@eco-drives.co.uk for examples of their work.

INTEREST RATES...

Not what they used to be

A

s I approach my thirtieth birthday this September, I have decided to reflect on the past thirty years, and I think it is fair to say the world is a very different place from what it was in 1990!

BY MATTHEW BIGGS – FINANCIAL PLANNER

‘balanced’ risk portfolio. The green line (B) is a fixed interest rate of 1.5% (the average of the past ten years) and the red line (C) is the Retail Performance Index (RPI), a measure of UK inflation:

The early ’90s was an incredible time for many reasons - some great music, the end of the Cold War, and the emergence of a new generation of tech companies that we all now wish we had purchased some shares in! Interest rates were on the up and, by the end of 1990, the Bank of England base interest rate was nearly 15% - completely unthinkable today! This was great for savers but clearly not so good for those who had a mortgage during those days and, as a borrower, things were pretty painful! In the current climate of low interest rates, we see the reverse of those days in the early ’90s cycle - great for borrowers but, for savers, almost impossible to find sensible levels of return at the bank or building society. So, where is the alternative in these days of fear and uncertainty? How are you going to generate sensible returns to see you through your retirement years, children’s schooling or that holiday of a lifetime?

By the start of July 2020, the blue line (A) in now valued at £18,566.02, the green line (B) is valued at £11,691.50 and the red line (C) is valued at £13,426.61. This shows that if you had chosen to save in a vehicle that offered a fixed interest rate of 1.5% over the past ten years, your money would have actually fallen in real term value of £1,784.66, whereas it would have gained £6,054.74 in real term value were it invested over the same ten year period (basically, if your money is below the red line (C) you’re losing money, not making money!). So, perhaps now is time to consider your own planning. With our help, you will be able to understand if making an investment is right for you.

One option you may wish to consider is to invest some of your capital. In the example below, you can see what would have happened if you had invested £10,000 between January 1st 2010 and July 1st 2020. The blue line (A) has been invested in the average

If you would like to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of investing your money over the medium to long term, then please contact our office to arrange a FREE initial consultation with one of our highly experienced and friendly financial planners.

Past performance can in no way be seen as a guide to likely future performance; investment values can fall as well as rise; when investing, capital will be placed at risk.

However, while this kind of crime is on the increase, technology is fast catching 09:29 up with the thieves and there is now a new smartphone app available, which makes stolen tools “too hot to handle”.

A company in South Oxfordshire is making it tough for thieves to swipe and sell on valuable tools, and Cambridgeshire Constabulary is among a number of police forces in the UK to support the scheme; it empowers tradesmen to securely register their tools and also identify stolen ones. The easy-to-use app allows tradespeople to record pictures and details of their tools and receipts on a secure cloud server which holds the ‘ISO27001’ certificate. This list of tools can be downloaded as a PDF and sent to the police and insurance companies. Users can quickly report tools as stolen or lost from the app, which then sends an instant alert to all other local registered users, warning them that a theft has just happened. After tools are reported stolen, they appear on ‘Dodgy Gear’, a search engine for stolen goods which can be freely accessed by any member of the public or police. Before purchasing an item (online or at a market) you can very simply check on ‘Dodgy Gear’ to make sure the item you are about to buy is not listed as stolen. You can search for the tool by serial number, model number, brand, tool type and description. To register online, download the app or, to find out more, visit www.thetoolregister.com S E P T E M BE R 2 0 2 0

Deepings Swimming Club Stays Fit and Healthy During Lockdown

T

he extended lockdown has caused havoc for many organisations, but one swimming club summoned all its resources to keep its swimmers engaged, fit and healthy while their local leisure centre remained closed. Deepings Swimming Club paused its training back in March and is still waiting for confirmation from operator 1Life about when Deepings Leisure Centre will re-open. But that hasn’t stopped head coach Lynn Chapman from keeping members engaged with the club through a series of fitness competitions and fun activities. It all started with a simple mission: how far can you run in a week? The rules allowed four runs in seven days and the swimmers were put into ‘Juniors’, ‘Youths’ and ‘Masters’ leagues. The competition ran over four weeks in May and thirty-nine swimmers took part. So, into June with two new challenges: how far can you cycle in a month and how fast can you run 1km? The cycling challenge proved very popular with swimmers and parents alike, with twenty-eight participants. During the competitions, the club’s swimmers have continued to attend the weekly land training sessions via Zoom, run by Spinroom’s Claire Cross. These fortyminute workouts have helped to keep everyone fit, with major emphasis on core strength. But filling the time away from the pool hasn’t all

30

Deepings

been about fitness levels. Deepings Swimming Club honoured and celebrated the 75th anniversary of VE Day in June by setting swimmers the challenge of doing something related to the number 75. Many focused on sporty themes, including 75 squats, 75 planks, 75km cycling, 75 seconds wall sit, 75 skips, 75 cartwheels, a 75-minute triathlon and an impressive 75 times running up and down the stairs. Other imaginative celebrations included making 75 gingerbread men, juggling balls 75 times, making (and eating) 75 strawberries with chocolate and putting on 75 items of clothing (on one of the hottest days of the year!) The club’s focus is now on returning to the pool as soon as possible. In the absence of its regular training venue, the coaching team has taken the squads to a variety of pools around Lincolnshire, including Tallington Lakes outdoor pool and Boston’s Geoff Moulder Leisure Centre, to help rebuild their skills and swimming fitness. The sessions, dubbed Project Return to Swimming, were due to run throughout August in the hope that the club will be able to be back in the Deepings Leisure Centre pool sometime in September. For further information, please contact Deepings SC interim chairman Andy Cardell or head coach Lynn Chapman by e-mailing the club at deepings@swimclubmanager.co.uk.

WHY THIS YEAR’S DEEPINGS BUSINESS COMMUNITY AWARDS ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER We all know how difficult it has been for many of us living with the pandemic. Many jobs, charityfunding activities, events and businesses have been affected and continue to face challenging times. However, it was so important that we should continue with the Deepings Business Community Awards! The Deepings and local villages are known for our

fighting spirit, not to give up and to push forward! Businesses are striving daily to innovate, protect jobs and serve their community! Local charities and groups are continuing to support their community. Now, more than ever, they need our support. The nature of these awards is that they are both nominated by the community, and the community votes for the winners. Thank you for all of your nominations. I can personally attest to the sense of value and meaning behind every nomination and every vote. Knowing that it is the community voting, they really do mean so much! They also help local businesses with extra publicity but also with morale – a warm (socially-distanced!) embrace, therefore, from the community for every member of the team! You can vote for your favourites, including local good causes, charities and groups by visiting www.deepings.co.uk/deeping-business-awards/ this-years-awards. However, the most important thing we can all do for local businesses is to use them #lovedeepings #suppportlocal! Thank you all and stay safe, Alison.

Deepings Raft Race – Mini Raft Competition Although the main Raft Race did not go ahead this year, the Deepings Raft Race Committee thought it would be fun to run a mini raft Design and Build Competition. A winner, to be awarded the £50 prize, was chosen from over forty entries and it was a very difficult decision with so many designs. There is also a runners-up prize of £20 for the best video entry (see the Raft Race Facebook page for full details). All entrants can have a medal if they wish, by contacting Kevin by e-mail at raftentry@ deepingsraftrace.co.uk to arrange for collection. To add to the fun, the Raft Race Committee did a walkabout in silly hats around the Deepings on what would have been Raft Race day. This was because they are supporting the DEEPING-A-THON which aims to raise money for charities that will have lost out due to the cancellation of many fund-raising events. Don’t forget to put August 1st 2021 in your diary for what is hoped will be the biggest and best-ever event, when the Deepings Raft Race returns. DEEP-IN AESTHETICS: Choose Wisely Latest news from Deep-in Aesthetics’ Julie Higgins:

People all over the UK undergo non-surgical treatments like Botox and fillers every year, but the industry operates almost completely unchecked. Non-surgical cosmetic treatments are everywhere. You might have seen them on your Facebook timeline, on ‘Love Island’ or in the media. Nowadays, you don’t even have to go under the knife to get this enhanced look. In the UK, non-surgical treatments like Botox and dermal fillers – known as ‘tweakments’ – are a £2.75 billion business. Nine out of ten cosmetic procedures performed in the country fall into this category. Though tweakments can include skin peels and laser treatments, the industry thrives off injectables

While these cosmetic procedures were once the preserve of the affluent, they are now so widely available that almost everyone seems to be at it, and class now doesn’t make a difference. School Returns...

U

nbelievably, we’re heading back into the classroom. After six months of life at home, the day is near for many parents to resume a bit of normality. During this time, it has given me an opportunity to enjoy time with my children, albeit with many “Kevin” moments from my eight-yearold son, protesting about his school work.

So, what can we do about it? Greet them with a smile and a hug at the end of that first day. Reconnect with them.

Congratulate them on achieving their first day back.

Ask them, “What’s been good?”

Give them time; they may need an hour to adjust after school – a moment of quiet time just to reflect and process the day.

Juggling business online and teaching did make me realise that I am more resilient and adaptable than I had previously thought, but I needed more rest too. The stress levels at times were too high.

Be available. They may not want to communicate or even be around anyone, so just have a conversation and tell them, “I am here when you are ready.”

With the new rules and regulations in place, we need to be mindful that returning to school for some will be a difficult time. There will be a few weeks of settling in required, different behaviours may resurface and for some, like my youngest, being away from mummy will have an impact. We all respond differently under change and especially if we’re already feeling anxious about things; then, our brain’s way of dealing with it can

The Virtual Revolution BY CLAIRE GRAY, OWNER OF RENU

This lockdown has encouraged us all to embrace technology a little more willingly than ever before.

P

latforms such as Zoom and Facetime, and Whatsapp groups have been a lifeline for keeping in touch with loved ones, as well as sustaining business meetings and socially distanced gatherings with friends and families. Change is not always welcomed, but it can be the catalyst for progress. I think it is true to say that most of us will now have seen and felt the benefits of the virtual revolution, whilst we will still appreciate the time when we can gather together in safety. This pandemic has raised awareness of how vitally important it is to keep ourselves physically fit and active. Yet many of the activities we enjoy around physical activity involve close contact with others, so the fitness industry has adapted quickly to move from physical to digital.

Virtual training is doing a fitness routine with your fitness coach at a time that fits in with you, without the burden of paying high fees or being limited to specific days and times. Many of these programmes are available for you to do at home, and this can be a great option if you have both the space and the equipment. Now that some restrictions are being lifted, Renu are taking this one step further, offering you a virtual personal trainer and unlimited virtual cycling classes in our fully-equipped and airconditioned gym! Indoor cycling classes have become increasingly popular over the past few years. A motivational instructor and some great music can see you through a calorie burning workout that is both enjoyable and gives great results.

I developed my lockdown survival package swiftly after lockdown, and it is specifically designed to give all the components you need to stay fit and healthy, whilst in the safety of your own home, without needing to be an athlete. You can choose from Pilates, Yoga, Cardio Tone and Abs classes and benefit from weekly e-mails to motivate and educate you on fitness, nutrition and beauty. It has been a real opportunity for me to share my thirty years of experience in the industry with a focus on feeling energised and good about yourself, inside and out. You can find out more about what I have to offer at www.clairegrayfitnesssolutions.co.uk.

Positive Environment to Help in a Challenging Time

The BBC recently reported:

“Twice as many adults in Britain are reporting symptoms of depression now, compared with this time last year, Office for National Statistics figures suggest. One in five people appeared to have depressive symptoms, compared with one in ten before the pandemic. That statement speaks for itself. There are countless studies, assertations and discussions about how much exercise can or cannot help with moderate mental health concerns. I would never oversimplify this, though. So, what am I trying to say? I speak from the standpoint of someone who is not a medical expert. I also speak from the standpoint of someone who has in their lifetime seen a

counsellor for a chat and as someone who knows his own mind and its tricks and tribulations. I speak as someone who, on a daily basis, analyses, thinks, overthinks, studies, worries and obsesses about a myriad of things. And of course, I speak from my standpoint in being someone whose professional life revolves around exercise. More recently too the business environment has been acutely based around rules, procedures and processes as we strive to keep a lid on COVID. So, we know that we are all more likely at this moment to be feeling the effects of stress and depression. From my perspective, I think a return to the gym has been incredibly positive.

But there is so much more than this somewhat cliched argument. Exercising in a gym brings much more in terms of simple mechanisms that make me feel better.

Will & Probate Services

‘I haven’t done anything about it, it’s just too complicated.’ ADVICE FROM NICK ASH, MANAGING DIRECTOR AT WILL AND PROBATE SERVICES

T

his is one of the excuses we hear the most at Will & Probate, but if you think about it, the phrase is just bonkers! If you genuinely have a complex family situation, then it is really important to have the right planning in place. The risks that you are exposing your family to by prevaricating are just too big to contemplate.

So, the first thing we try to establish is just how complex your situation really is. There is no doubting that since the business was established fifteen years ago, family life has become more complex. But we can honestly say that, during that time, the number of occasions we have been genuinely taken aback by the complexity of someone’s circumstances can be counted on the fingers of one hand. We have given in twice in that time. There was the couple who were both in their fifth marriage and had children from nine different relationships between them (they couldn’t agree who deserved what!) Then there was the estate that still hadn’t been settled fourteen years after the person’s death because they had assets in seven different jurisdictions – we were the fifth legal firm that the family had consulted, whilst the other four were still working on aspects of the case. Beyond that, it is hard to remember anyone else that was just too complicated.

Specialist Planning for Families with Complex Situations. Assuming that you are not quite as extreme as the two cases outlined above, then we will be able to help you and your family. We will produce a bespoke suite of documents which will give you the peace of

mind that you are looking for. Done properly, your planning can be quick, convenient, cost effective, and cover every situation that your family could face.

Is your Family ‘Complex’? There are multiple circumstances that make a family complex; some of the most common are – ● Living

together and unmarried. families, where there are children from multiple relationships. ● Families with disabled children or children with special needs. ● Children caring for elderly parents. ● Business-owning families. ● Families with foreign properties. ● Muslim families who want their estate to be distributed in accordance with Islam. ● Blended

There will be many more, but the bottom line is if you identify yourself and your family in one of those situations, you should talk to us. The first consultation is always free. Call 01778 382723 today to book your consultation. Don’t forget that today’s planning is tomorrow’s peace of mind, for you and your family.

ild Card Brewery was established during 2012 and, today, this brewery can boast much deserved recognition, having award-winning productions amongst their beers. Delivering throughout the UK, Wild Card ales can also be located at numerous bars, pubs, restaurants, supermarkets and retail outlets. Table Beer (2.7% vol) was developed for beer drinkers who require or prefer an ale with a low ABV. This production does not compromise on taste, with its tropical fruit flavours pleasing the taste buds. Pale Ale (4.3% vol) utilises Citra, Ekuanot and Cascade hops to great advantage. Hugely popular with pale ale lovers, I found this easydrinking beer refreshing. Raspberry Gose (4.6% vol) has been created with the sour beers of Northern Germany in mind. It is fruity, having raspberry added towards the end of the fermentation process. Again refreshing, this is classed as a sour, salted, wheat beer and regularly chosen by ‘devotees’ of this type of ale. For IPA drinkers, there are several excellent selections available from the Wild Card Brewery. Unite Tribute IPA (5.4% vol) is brewed with Citra and Simcoe hops and dedicated to Ada Lovelace, an English mathematician and writer. This beer delights the nasal senses and entices the mouth’s pleasures to follow. 22 50

Neipa (5.4% vol), India Pale Ale (5.5%vol) and Ella (5.7% vol) are three further IPA beers that are enjoyed, constantly. Good aromas are evident and tropical fruits hold the interest for the mouthfeel, continuing through to the finish. For a higher ABV and still with IPA productions, Cashmere (5.8% vol) has Mosaic, Citra, Ella, plus Cashmere hops and IPA (6.1% vol), which is classed as West Coast, are great for nose appeal, with the latter using Citra and Simcoe hops. I would describe both of these smooth productions as being big on flavour – to the last, very enjoyable, drop! These are just a selection from the most impressive ranges of beers produced by the Wild Card Brewery Company. Brewery tours and experiences are offered too and have become increasingly popular. Hot Spots

I

Wise Words By Deirdre Wilson

n these times of lockdown and travel restrictions, many of us are dreaming of the hot spots we would love to visit - Bali, the Maldives, Skegness – but for vets the term “hot spot” has an entirely different meaning.

Hot spots appear mainly on dogs especially in warm, sultry weather. They are patches of raw, red moist skin and can range from an inch in diameter to several inches, forming a large sore patch on your dog’s skin. The first sign many owners notice is a patch of hard, sticky fur where the skin has oozed and this has dried the fur together. Usually, the dog is very itchy in this area and scratching at it makes the sore worse and it can get very large, very quickly. It can also be painful and dogs can be reluctant to let owners look at it. Probably, the most common breed of dog to get hot spots are Golden Retrievers but it can occur in any type of dog or cat.

What causes a hot spot? A small bite such as a flea or midge bite causes an itch. An underlying allergy can cause your dog to itch and even joint pain will mean that your dog over-licks the area in an attempt to soothe the pain. As your dog scratches at the spot, he introduces bacteria under the skin and infection starts to spread. We usually clip the affected area and owners are often astonished at how far the lesion has spread. The good

54

news is that most of the time the damage is superficial and can be treated with topical skin disinfectants. Those prescribed by your vet will kill the bacteria and antibiotic creams are also very useful. Never put anything on the wound that will sting – the skin is raw and sore, so your dog is unlikely to be happy with you! Some hot spots are very painful and require a course of oral antibiotics and even steroids to help them heal. Hot spots on the face may mean there is an ear infection and the ears also have to be treated to clear all of the lesions. It is important to keep your pets clear of fleas as they are the culprit in at least 30% of all skin cases presented to vets. You may never see the fleas on your pet and often if only one jumps on your dog, feeds, causes an itchy spot, then jumps off again waiting for the next victim, you will never, ever see the little blighter. So, always, always protect your pet against parasites, no matter how clean you think they are and keep the flea treatment going through the hot weather especially. Many of the veterinary spot-ons for fleas will also kill ear and skin mites as these can be implicated in causing hot spots too. So every time you’re dreaming of those exotic places you’d love to visit – put a reminder in the calendar to flea your pet as well.

Mayor

WORDS FROM THE

Mayor of Market Deeping

COUNCILLOR JOSHUA YARHAM

August is normally a month where councils take a break from the normal timetable of meetings and decision-making processes. However, I made the decision last month, with the approval of councillors, to hold a Full Council meeting in August.

E

xceptional times call for exceptional measures and Market Deeping needed desperately for decisions to be made to ensure the future development and improvement of facilities for the benefit of all residents.

All committees were authorised to increase their spending capabilities up to £5,000. Tender documents for bus shelter repairs and improvements were authorised; work will start as soon as companies reply with quotes, and the council is able to decide which company to employ to carry out the works, in the September Full Council meeting. The transfer of the Town Hall has been completed and the Town Council now owns the building.

some time but alas has not been completed. Most importantly, a company has been chosen to complete the renovations for the play park at John Eve Field. It is expected that work will start in late September 2020 and be completed within a reasonable time. It is with sadness that the council has decided to announce that the Christmas Market 2020 has been cancelled due to the current government guidelines in place and not knowing what the future holds in relation to large crowds and social-distancing. We will ensure that the “Carols around the Tree” and the “Christmas Lights SwitchOn” will take place on December 5th 2020.

Plans were put in place to financially support the play scheme to be moved to the February halfterm and Easter holidays. Grant Aid was authorised to “Deepingathon” (the event organised to replace the Deepings Raft Race this year), the Deepings Rugby Club (which I had the pleasure of visiting in July), and the Deepings Youth Group.

I had the pleasure of attending a socially-distanced gathering on Millfield with Sir John Hayes M.P. and others on July 30th. The event raised the importance of open space being retained in Market Deeping for the enjoyment of all. It has been included in the recently published Neighbourhood Plan and has been submitted to Lincolnshire County Council. Comments submitted would be welcomed from everyone wishing to raise the importance of such an enjoyable open space.

Standing orders and policies were updated – a laborious task that has needed to be done for

I hope that all the residents of Market Deeping are keeping well and enjoying the recent good weather.

Legal Corner

LASTING POWER OF ATTORNEY:

Planning for the Unexpected!

M

any of us refuse to accept that we might lose our mental capacity and so don’t think about how we would manage our financial affairs if we did become mentally incapable. Statistics show that more than 920,000 people in the UK are living with dementia – a number expected to rise to over a million by 2024. The vast majority of people with dementia are aged sixty-five and over, accounting for over 880,000 people. However, an estimated 40,000 people under sixty-five are living with dementia in the UK. It is therefore important to plan ahead and ease the potential burden on your children/relatives. One answer is to create Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA), which gives people who you trust the legal authority to make decisions on your behalf about your financial affairs, if you become mentally incapable of making your own decisions, or it allows them to help you if you ask them to, if you become physically unable to deal with your affairs. It is very important that you set up an LPA while you are still mentally capable, well before you need it. If you become mentally incapacitated

later in life and don’t have an LPA in place, your relatives can face long, distressing delays and expense in applying to the court to take control. Don’t assume that because you have set up an LPA, you have lost control. Your LPA would only be activated, if and when it is needed.

There are two types of Lasting Powers of Attorney: ● A Property and Financial Affairs LPA is used to appoint someone you trust as your attorney to take decisions on your behalf about money matters. They would be empowered, for example, to make decisions on buying and selling your property, running your bank accounts, dealing with your bills and state benefits and investing your money. This type of LPA can also be useful if you need your attorney to help you because of physical incapacity as well as mental incapacity. ● A Health and Welfare LPA only applies if you become mentally incapacitated and allows your chosen attorney to make decisions about your care, including where you live, what medical treatment you receive, whether you should be resuscitated etc.

The LPA is a powerful legal document. You may wish to get a solicitor to help if you’re unsure about the process.

Local MP Takes a ‘Field Trip’ to Meet Campaigners

O

ver a hundred campaigners from the ‘Friends of Mill Field’ group met with local MP, Rt. Hon. Sir John Hayes on Thursday July 30th at the much-loved open space in Market Deeping. The meeting was led by the ‘Friends of Mill Field’ in response to recent correspondence with the MP regarding Lincolnshire County Council’s ongoing application to build 260 houses on the site. The organiser of the meeting, Councillor Ashley Baxter, who represents Market and West Deeping ward of SKDC commented, “Sir John has taken an active interest in our campaign over the last few years and has recently written to me about the County Council application. I am obviously keen to work with everyone who wants to retain Mill Field as a valued and accessible open space.” Rt. Hon. Sir John Hayes, who is the MP for South Holland and the Deepings explained, “I was delighted to accept an invitation to come and inspect the fields, which I visited so many times for the Deeping Show, and to meet so many of its regular users again. It is encouraging that there is clear crossparty support from the councillors who represent Market Deeping at the county and district. I hope the decision-makers at Grantham and Lincoln will heed the enormous strength of feeling in the Deepings.” During his visit, Sir John Hayes made an informal speech to the crowd of people who regularly use the site for a range of recreational activities, particularly jogging and dog-walking. Chair of Friends of Mill Field, Mrs Pam Steel, was impressed, adding, “Sir John was very encouraging. He is clearly aware of the passion of local residents to oppose the development plans and to retain the open space. It is good to know that

our local MP supports our cause.” Several other local councillors attended the event, including Cllr. Rosemary Trollope-Bellew of LCC; Cllr. Virginia Moran; Cllr. Bob Broughton; Cllr. Judy Stevens and Cllr. Ashley Baxter of SKDC; and Cllr. Josh Yarham and Cllr. David Shelton of MDTC. Councillor Yarham is the current mayor of Market Deeping and Councillor David Shelton is the Chair of the Deepings Neighbourhood Plan Committee. The next milestone in the campaign to save Mill Field will be a six-week public consultation on the Deepings Neighbourhood Plan which was to start on August 3rd.The plan, which was formally submitted in June, would protect Mill Field as a ‘Local Green Space’ and Millfield Road as a protected ‘Green Lane’. Details on how to comment on the plan are available from SKDC, MDTC or from the Friends of Mill Field. At the end of the consultation, the plan will be assessed by an independent examiner who will decide whether any changes are necessary before the plan goes to a referendum.
