Introduction
Welcome to your November Issue A warm welcome to our penultimate issue of the year … and what a year it has been! Back in January, there was a one-liner doing the rounds: “How do I know what this year’s going to bring? I haven’t got 20/20 vision!” Little did anyone realise … ! We’ll have all learned many things this year: just how an hour of exercise during lockdown can be so beneficial; how a group of sewing-machines and their wonderful operatives can produce so much fabulous PPE in record time; and how everyone now realises the immense value of our NHS, hoping that all of those “Thursday evening clapathons” will not be forgotten, once the pay rounds begin! The list could go on, with all of our educators and “key workers” deserving immense praise too. This month, we see many references on our pages to Christmas, barely ten weeks away, and so there is hopefully some bright light for us all, as we peer through this (admittedly very gloomy) tunnel! I hope you are all keeping safe and sane, and that our magazine can help you through these troubling times.
Claire x
So, they warned us about a second spike in the virus and, at the time of writing, all the statistics are indeed going the wrong way. It’s sad to see so much being disrupted, including this month’s traditional Remembrance Day services and “poppy collections”. The customary, accelerating pre-Christmas fervour and countdown to the big day has hardly surfaced yet, with concerns over whether restrictions on gatherings will actually rule out that big Christmas dinner, with all the family around the table, whilst returning students may have to be quarantined in their rooms! Yet, there is still optimism out there, as our wonderful contributors and advertisers continue their battles for survival in these trying times. A number of new businesses are appearing each month in our towns, and surely, the downturn will soon be here! And finally, a little something to keep the spirits up, (and before you see them in your Christmas crackers!) • This Covid business is nothing new. The Russian physician, Ivor Chestikov was treating the composer DryCoughsky years ago. • If Covid-19 has forced you or a loved one to wear a mask with your spectacles, call our help-line - you may be entitled to condensation! Enjoy the read.

School News
Linchfield Community Primary School joins CIT (Community Inclusive Trust)
L
inchfield Community Primary School in Deeping St James is now part of the CIT, bringing to fifteen the number of schools within the Trust across the East Midlands. Peter Bell, CIT Chief Executive, explained, “The Trust have been supporting Linchfield since May 2019 following their Ofsted inspection. The school has made significant progress since and we are delighted that they are now formally part of the CIT family. We will continue to work with the Linchfield team to ensure further positive development of the school and their drive to provide an outstanding education for their pupils.” Selina Ratchford, Interim Headteacher, added, “This is a very exciting time for Linchfield Primary and our whole school community. We are looking forward to a bright future as the school goes from strength to strength to provide the very best education for Linchfield pupils.” …………………………………………………….
In other Linchfield news… • Mana Education, the supply teaching agency, have been providing teaching and support staff for many years during staff absences, training, and maternity breaks. Aware of Linchfield’s desire to revamp their school library for pupils, to replenish their dwindling stock with new and exciting books to encourage and entice more children to read, Mana Education were only too pleased to help in providing them with a wonderful range of new library books. • Local football club, Deeping United FC, are
working alongside Mana as cosponsors, as they too have a very inclusive ethos. Matt Holland, Vice Chairman of Deeping United FC commented, “We were happy to help out, as we all need support from time to time and Deeping United will always champion our local community where we can. Our club provides ‘football for all’, taking a development approach rather than assembling teams just intent on winning. This means that players of all abilities, irrespective of gender and physical and mental barriers, have the opportunity to be involved in matches rather than just watching from the side lines.” Selina Ratchford, said, “We are extremely grateful to both Mana Education and Deeping United for their support. The pupils are thrilled.”

Health
Still Open, Still Covid-prepared, Still Responsible, Still Working Hard We are still employing the myriad safety measures and mitigations we designed and implemented on day one of ‘re-opening’ after lockdown.
Y
our safety is still our priority and your physical and mental wellbeing is still our passion. The ‘Gold Standard’ we set is still that very same standard. Indeed, we maintain, improve upon, and learn how to further adapt this standard every week. It’s human nature that we all become somewhat acclimatised to the situation we are living in. It’s natural that we become battle-hardened and wise. It is also true that some become tired, even exhausted with the constant background of challenging news and heightened anxiety. But now is the time to stay the course.
Our exposure to daily media in the form of TV news, Social Media ‘news’, radio reports and other written ‘info’ formats, is to consume the very many ways our government has disseminated, distributed, communicated, construed and often confused in sharing a message that we want to be concise, clear and detailed.
This is certainly the case for Empire Gym as a business and as a pillar of the local community. Our primary focus is always to fulfil the personal responsibility we feel as a family to do our very best, but I also feel that it is important to keep in mind the influence we can have in being professional, positive, prepared and decisive in our decision making around Covid safety. We can set an example. You can still visit our website www.empiregyms. com to read the comprehensive ‘Gold Standard’ Covid Safety document I wrote in preparation for the post-lockdown ‘come-back’. Indeed, I have recently updated it to version 2, to include many small updates, adaptations, learning points and improvements.
8
We want our messages to be clear. Clear messaging makes people feel safer and more confident. We all digest information in different ways. But we as a business want to ensure two things:
1 2
Deepings
That the fine details and reasoning behind our decisions are readily available for people to read. That implementing the daily actions that the details demand is easy and intuitive, both for staff and customers alike.
N OV E M BE R 2 0 2 0
So, if you want the full, transparent, researched and referenced detail, you can find it on our website, via a link to a PDF on the front page. But I can easily summarise what you should expect when you come into the gym in reassuring, concise simplicity. Here are the key points: • You must book a gym or class session – you cannot just ‘turn up’ and you must be on our system with up-to-date contact details. • When you arrive, your forehead temperature will be taken without fail. • You must sanitise your hands before you enter the gym or class area. • You must stay two metres apart from others whenever possible. • You must spray and wipe down your equipment after use. • You must sanitise your hands between different pieces of equipment. • At all times, full and effective ventilation is maintained by opening the front and back doors and by using our ‘lossnay’ mechanical air exchange system. And importantly, we enforce these rules.
communication and respect between people here. It is fair to say that Empire Gym is a community within a community. So, for as long as we need to adapt, we will adapt. For as long as we need to learn, we will learn, and for as long as we can sustain a viable business with the incredible support of those who have stuck by us, we will continue to provide a service to the community.
But, it is only the trade we continue to receive from the local community that makes Empire Gym viable. People have shown that they trust us, and we are very grateful. We had incredible support during the first lockdown period; we hope, with your Clear help, we can navigate the months messaging ahead, whatever they will bring.
makes people feel safer and more confident.
We trust people to be responsible, but if people need to be told to adapt their behaviour to fit the standard we expect, we tell them so. A continued failure to do so means you are not welcome at Empire Gym. Indeed, if compliance with simple rules that help ensure people’s safety isn’t something you can work with for a sustained period of time, this isn’t the place for you.
In any event, we never stop working. We never stop trying. And we hope you can see, we never stop in our pursuit of safety, quality and service, come rain, shine or Covid-19!
Please also remember that, as we are coming up to the Christmas shopping period, you can purchase Empire Gym Gift Vouchers which can be used, for gym memberships, classes and the Sun Suite. Call 01778 344579 or e-mail enquiries@empire gyms.com if you have any questions about how to purchase vouchers in a Covid-safe manner.
We were always in a great position in terms of our customers’ compliance with the expected standard. There has been a long-standing, deep-seated culture of cleaning and of honest

Don’t Make it a “Christ Miss” Make it the Year of Goodwill! BY CLAIRE GRAY, OWNER OF RENU
Normally, in this November issue, I would be discussing preparations for the party season and how we can take the stress out of Christmas. I think it’s fair say that things will be a little different this year!
T
he thing about a crisis is that it very often brings out the very best in people. Many positives came out of the very difficult challenges of lockdown earlier in the year. For example, we all started going for daily walks where we would meet and talk to people who we had previously ignored or simply acknowledged briefly with a nod or a smile. What’s more, our awareness and appreciation of the NHS and other key workers increased no end.
During this extraordinary period, I, like many others, found myself willingly giving and receiving help and encouragement from other people. I also tried to help and support local businesses and to support my customers as much as I could. I was overwhelmed by the support they showed me. Living through this pandemic helps us put things into perspective. It’s certainly highlighted the importance of our health and wellbeing, and the opportunities for gatherings with friends and family have become so much more precious. We have learned to appreciate the simple things in life again and giving gifts is one of the ways we can show love and appreciation for a kindness, a simple thank you and, of course, for Christmas.
You can purchase our gift vouchers online, collect them personally or have them posted. During the lockdown period, we honoured and extended all of our vouchers, so nobody missed a treatment. We will continue to offer this flexibility with all of our vouchers, which currently have a full year expiry. You can therefore be assured that the person receiving the gift of pampering will enjoy it, regardless. There are so many ways in which our vouchers can be used, ranging from beautiful products to use at home, treatments in the salon, workouts in the gym, classes in the studio or online workouts and health advice. They are a great way to say, “Thank you”, “I love you” or “Happy Christmas”. Regardless of the pandemic, make Christmas special this year with a RENU voucher!

Travel Update From Your
Travel Counsellor
I
hope you are keeping well and coping in these ‘Covid-19 times’. Taking care of people is at the heart of everything I do as a Travel Counsellor, and it’s so important for you to feel safe and confident when it comes to making future travel plans.
Beyond the Horizon, Holiday Ideas for 2021 How would you like a blissful, want-for-nothing week in paradise on an idyllic tropical island in the Maldives? With full board privileges and everything at your fingertips, freedom to soak in the landscape of silky white sands and lush green palms trees, The KUREDU, one of the Maldives’ top-rated resorts, certainly fits the bill. Seven nights in April 2021 from £1,639 per person. For an upgrade to all-inclusive, add £235 per person. With over 140 islands, the Maldives has something to offer everyone.
Now, more than ever, my aim is to keep my customers as informed as possible on the latest travel advice. Travel is becoming more complicated; the advice from the FCDO (Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office) and travel restrictions, both here in the UK and abroad, are changing constantly. As the travel requirements change and evolve, you may struggle to fully comprehend what exactly is needed to enable you to spend some much-needed and longed-for time away with your family and friends.
Pool suites are incredibly popular for next year; wouldn’t you like your own pool suite for your next holiday? There is no simpler or better way to feel that you are truly unwinding than lounging poolside, just steps away from your home-from-home. No pressure to “get ready”, no need to pack the beach bag or make yourself presentable to the world at large…. just relax and enjoy!
I’m here to do that for you, with the support of our Travel Counsellors 24/7 duty office and a network of travel industry professionals and contacts, to ensure that a seamless travel experience is possible.
I have a wealth of holiday ideas to suit everyone and all budgets. Give yourself something to look forward to in 2021. Just drop me an e-mail or give me a call. I’m here to help.”

TOFFEE APPLES Toffee apples are popular at this time of the year and the kids will love helping to decorate them with their favourite sweets and treats!
Method
Ingredients
• Insert a wooden skewer or lolly stick into the stalk end of each apple. Line a large baking tray with baking parchment.
10 wooden skewers (or lolly sticks) 10 Golden Delicious apples, scrubbed 350g Fairtrade light soft brown sugar 2 tsp white wine vinegar 35g unsalted English butter 2 tbsp golden syrup To decorate, why not try sugar stars, crushed ginger snap biscuits, chocolate M&Ms, sprinkles or bits of popcorn? Yummy!

• Put the sugar in a heavy-based pan with 120ml cold water and heat gently, stirring until it dissolves. Bring to the boil and add the vinegar, butter and golden syrup. Boil gently for 12 minutes, until it has reached the soft-crack stage (138°C on a sugar thermometer, or the point at which a little of the mixture, dropped into cold water, forms threads that bend slightly before breaking). • Dip the bottom two-thirds of the apple in the toffee, turning to coat. Working quickly, get the children to add their decoration of choice to each apple. Leave to set on the baking parchment for 15 minutes.

Why Local? Top 10 Reasons To ‘Think Local’ 1 More opportunities for local jobs, training and skills – Small, local businesses are the largest employer nationally (approx. 13 million), and provide jobs for our local community. 2 Significantly more money circulated around our community, passing through more local hands – Local businesses often purchase from other local businesses and services, helping to sustain a vibrant local economy. 3 Local non-profits/local charities receive greater support – Charities and non-profits receive more than 250% greater support from locally-owned businesses than non-local businesses. 4 Protect the unique character of our community – Our ‘one-of-a-kind’ businesses are an integral part of our distinctive character. They help promote ‘community spirit’, being at the heart of community. 5 Reduced environmental impact – Requiring less transportation, minimising the contribution to congestion in key towns and cities, reducing pollution and loss of habitat. 6 Customer service is better – Local businesses are more accountable to their local communities and provide a more personal service. They are very
dependent on repeat business, word of mouth, and prioritise giving quality customer service. 7 Local business owners invest in the community – Usually owned by people who live in the community who are more likely to care about the community’s future. 8 More choice and diversity – Well-supported, local businesses attract new businesses; existing businesses more able to invest in more ranges, services and improved choice for us all. 9 Encourages investment and sustainability – A healthier local economy attracts a wide range of investment in local services, facilities, increased local tax revenue. 10 Local businesses often support local projects, local events and festivals which all help build our community spirit. Now, more than ever, you VOTING ‘LOCAL’ will make all the difference. How terrible would it be if we lost our local businesses forever, affecting the character and heartbeat of the community? Your support can and does make a difference! Alison at www.lovedeepings.co.uk

Mayor WORDS FROM THE
Mayor of Market Deeping
COUNCILLOR JOSHUA YARHAM
Unfortunately, and unavoidably, I missed chairing our October Full Council meeting.
I
will respond to the decision made regarding the funding allocated to the Deepings Youth Group next month, when I have the full facts, and have considered and acted upon a productive and positive path forwards.
However, I am thoroughly disappointed at the level of debate on social media on the local Facebook pages that I have seen. We are a tolerant, accepting and diverse community, who show our best attributes when working together, not acting to divide us apart. On a brighter note, Cllr. Hembrow and Cllr. Broughton have been successfully managing and overlooking the works taking place on the John Eve Field and the Sanctum. I thank them for their support and on-going work.
Furthermore, the BMX track has been renovated with new surface materials. We also seem to have acquired a bike-rack in Market Square. I have contacted Lincolnshire County Council’s relevant Councillor, requesting an explanation as to why Market Deeping Town Council was not given prior notice or allowed adequate input into the discussions of design and location. I will endeavour to work with Cllr. Trollope-Bellew over the matter to have it removed so that LCC have an opportunity to try better next time. Finally, please carry on social distancing, wearing face masks and washing hands regularly when interacting with others. I wish you all good health!

osé wines have been very popular for drinking during the summer months, but I am now finding that ‘pink’ wines are a regular choice for many throughout the year.
Today, these wines are produced by a good number of countries globally, satisfying wine lovers (and demand) worldwide. The rose colour adds ‘something’ to a dining table, including al fresco dining. Events and numerous occasions are enhanced by these elegant, colourful wines, in varying shades. They also make splendid pre-dining drinks, as well as being perfect accompaniments to a lot of cuisine, such as seafood and pasta dishes. Canti Extra Dry is a very popular choice for many (Italy 11% vol). I found this Vino Spumante production to have a good, enticing bouquet of fruits and a fresh mouthfeel, with a very pleasant flavour. The persistent perlage adds to the experience, splendidly. Other popular ‘sparklers’ (with a lower and alcohol-free content) include Extra Special Pink Muscat. Grape juice concentrate is blended with sparkling water to produce this refreshing beverage. Freixenet Alcohol-Free Sparkling (Spain) is a further production that pleases many with its light and fruity flavour. Extra Special Pinot Grigio is a rosé from Italy (12% vol). This wine has a very pale pink colour, which

attracts to the elegant experience for the mouth’s pleasures and on to the palate’s enjoyment. Staying with Italian productions, Canti Pinot Grigio Delle Venezie (12% vol) has many devotees. Again, regularly selected by numerous ‘pink’ lovers, this wine certainly does not disappoint.
Trevor L a n g le y
Over in the France section, two that ‘caught my eye’ were Vin De Provence (13% vol) and Prophecy (12.5% vol). I found the former, with its delicate pink salmon colour, to be refreshingly dry and elegant and the latter, which also has good flavours of red fruits, to follow the nasal senses, wonderfully. Last, (but not least) Rose Les Estivales (France 12% vol) is my finishing personal selection. It is refreshing and with a pleasant floral bouquet, leading to the fruit flavours, right through to the palate’s sensation and enjoyment, to the end. I located these wines at an Asda store, where I found great value on their extensive drinks sections, which include award–winning productions. www.asda.com

“Why Should I Use a Professional When I Can Do it Myself For Free?” ADVICE FROM NICK ASH, MANAGING DIRECTOR AT WILL AND PROBATE SERVICES
Q
uite often people ask me, “Why should I use a professional when I can write my will for free?” Now, for some people, that might be the right way to go. But if I’m honest, those people are few and far between.
In life, there are those people who will take a risk to save some money in the short term. Some people choose to build their own extensions, rather than use a builder, but they won’t have guarantees when things go wrong. Others might choose to do their own conveyancing when they move to a new house and sometimes people apply for a grant of probate without taking professional advice. All of these things carry huge risks and consequences if things go wrong. Thankfully, these people are in the minority. Ultimately, most people want the peace of mind that comes from knowing that something has been done properly. A couple of years ago I met a family. Their father had died but they had a will that was written by him on the back of an A4 sheet of paper. The will seemed fairly straightforward on the face of it. It
appointed his son and daughter as executors and gave his estate equally between three children. They were obviously very proud of his will as it had saved him a few quid when he had made it. He had signed it and his son and daughter had signed it as witnesses. It was a valid will. Sadly, what they didn’t realise was that, by signing the will as witnesses, they had contravened the rules set down in Section 15 of the Wills Act which say that a witness to a will cannot be a beneficiary and that any gift to a witness would fail. This meant that the gentleman’s youngest son got the whole estate as the gifts to his siblings had failed. Clearly, this is not what dad had intended but, as a consequence of trying to save a few pounds, he ended up with his estate being disputed among his children. The cost of sorting out the problems was far in excess of any saving he had made when he wrote his will himself. I have heard many similar tales over the past fifteen years. So, my tip is a simple one - get some professional advice; there are plenty of people out there who can write your will properly for you. If you would like to use us, then call 01778 382723 and book a free consultation to discuss your needs.

A
s we get to the end of our first term of the new school year, the children have settled into the new Covid-safe routines well. Each class arrives and leaves at different times and regular hand washing is the norm, from the newest Reception child to the oldest in Year 6. Our youngest children in “Squirrels” class have been learning about Deeping St Nicholas village, including physical and human features. This has involved making models of various buildings. The “Kittens” group (Reception children) have enjoyed exploring our woodland learning area outside. Lower Key Stage 2 children have been busy working on local history and living things in history. Upper Key Stage 2 children, meanwhile, have been engrossed with aspects of both World Wars, reading various novels set in those times. We are holding an Open Day on Saturday November 14th, from 10am – 11am, and 12 noon – 1pm. If you would like to visit, please call the school on 01775 630280 to book a time slot.

GARDENING TIPS
I
t is now the time to prepare for next year. Winter digging is a priority and is best done as quickly as the ground conditions allow, so that there is plenty of time for the frost to break down the soil and provide a good tilth for sowing next year’s crops.
Make sure that the plot is tidy and clear of summer crops; don’t leave them to rot as this can increase the risk of disease and harbour unwanted pests. Once dug over, add well-rotted manure (no need to dig it in) or compost and cover the soil with plastic or weed suppressant as this keeps the weeds at bay and, as it keeps the soil relatively warm, planting can start earlier in the spring. Autumn always brings a plethora of leaves. They take a while to rot down in the compost heap, but leaf mould makes a good mulch. Make a cage to contain the leaves, using four stakes and stapling chicken wire around them. Just throw the leaves in and leave them for a year to rot down. Alternatively, you can put them in a bin liner with some soil, make holes in the side and leave to rot down. Tasks for this month include: • Propagate rhubarb crowns by lifting and dividing into smaller pieces, planting at the same depth in their new position, spread well-rotted manure around the plant, but don’t cover the crown.
• Secure covers over compost heaps/bins; although the material needs to be damp, winter rain and snow will saturate it, thus slowing the rotting process down. • Plan the crop rotation for next year. Planting one group of vegetables in the same ground year after year increases the risk of a build-up of disease. There are websites that provide planners, one example is www.gardenplanner.suttons.co.uk • Dismantle bean canes, if you haven’t already, as leaving them in the ground will cause the bases to rot. • Start to harvest winter cabbage, Brussels sprouts, leeks and parsnips, (wait until after a frost for the parsnips, as the frost encourages the sugars which give parsnips their sweetness). Pick sprouts from the bottom up as this allows the top ones a chance to swell. • Plant garlic cloves, if you haven’t already, and if you have heavy soil that tends to hold water then put either gravel or sharp sand in the base of the hole before planting. If you have planted them check that the birds have not dislodged them. • Check netting on brassicas as the pigeons will be hungry in the cold months and can strip a plant bare in no time. Remove any yellowing leaves as leaving them to rot risks spreading grey mould. • Plant early ‘overwintering’ broad beans (either in the ground or in pots), peas, shallots, and onions. Happy gardening!

The test is quite rigorous and some of you may have seen the children cycling up and down Broadgate Lane, performing all manner of manoeuvres. Next term, we will be starting some clubs. Obviously, these will generally be attended by a single year group bubble. The Year 4 children are having the opportunity of joining a Paralympic sporting club, playing Boccia (which is a little bit like bowls). EQUITY RELEASE MORTGAGES:
Should You Consider Them?
W
hen equity release mortgages were first introduced, our advice was to not take out equity from your property, unless you were desperate for the money. However, over time, better products have come on the market and currently it has helped many of our clients to access some of the money tied up in the value of their home to live comfortably in retirement; fund home improvements; or help a family member with a cash gift. Unfortunately, under the current situation with Covid-19, you may be struggling financially or you may simply want to help a loved one to purchase a property or move yourself and take advantage of the current Stamp Duty savings. Equity release mortgages are also a convenient way of raising cash without having to pay back, on a monthly basis. This is because most choose the lifetime option which means it is paid back from your estate when you (or the last one if
you are a couple) have passed away, or if you vacate the property to go into long-term care. One disadvantage is that it reduces the amount your children inherit on your death, but your children may be financially settled and want you to be more financially comfortable. Many clients are therefore of the opinion that they would prefer to help their children during their lifetime, when help is needed rather than face the prospect of no or very little inheritance if you have had to use most of your wealth to cover care homes fees. If you are over fifty-five years old and wish to consider releasing equity from your property, you need to take advice from an independent financial advisor. This is because there are many mortgage lenders who offer equity release mortgages, and the financial advisor can advise you on what is right for you. If you don’t have your own independent financial advisor, then we can point you in the right direction and also have expertise to handle the conveyancing for your equity release mortgage.

First Mention This Year of the “C” Word!
A
s Christmas appears on the horizon, we know that this is the time of year that we will get lots of requests for additional sockets for Christmas decorations, so I wanted to pre-empt the Christmas rush by giving some electrical safety advice this month. Clients will often contact us to install external sockets to provide power for Christmas lights. Something that is not often considered is that the plugs that are attached to most outside Christmas lights often have transformers built into them. This means that the plug is much larger than one of the IP-rated sockets will allow, whilst still being able to close. When we are installing external sockets, if the socket is being installed to power up Christmas lighting, we often advise to also fit a weatherproof extension box next to the socket. This will allow up to four plugs and allows lots of room for the transformer plugs that are often used. This will ensure that no rain or humidity will get into your new socket, and even leaves enough room for a timer so you don’t have to remember to turn them off at night.
BY COLEEN EVERITT, ALTO ELECTRICAL LIMITED
online that don’t meet our British safety standards. Always use LED lights; they are very reasonably priced now and there is just no justification when you take into account the added safety benefits of not using old style hot light bulbs. Always check them over for damage before using them, and if you are using them in a business premises or in a public area, always get them PAT tested before use. Always use ladders safely. Get help when using ladders and always ask someone to foot your ladder. If you have any questions or concerns, you can call your local electrician for FREE ADVICE on 01778 772595

Another option you may not have considered is to have it running off a timer switch fuse spur on the inside; this means the control is completely at your fingertips without going out into the cold weather. Being able to isolate it on the inside also means the socket is far less likely to be misused.
Terms & conditions: 1. To install socket/s back-to-back with an existing socket, the existing socket cannot be a spur off the ring. 2. Minimum safety requirements must be in place (RCD protection/Bonding). 3. The circuit must be clear of underlying faults and in good working order. 4. The inside socket and the area outside where it will go need to be clear and accessible for installing.
Whilst we are on the (perhaps premature!) topic of Christmas, here are some things to consider if you are looking to put up Christmas lights this year. Always buy from a reputable source. There are many counterfeit and replica items available to buy

Consumer Advice
Give Doorstep Traders The Cold Shoulder As Winter Sets In by Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades At this time of year, the elements can take their toll on the home; we can expect gusty winds and heavy rain to play havoc when it comes to guttering, roof tiles, fences and even trees. Your driveway may have also lost its summer sparkle and be in need of a deep clean. Trading Standards always advise to never accept an offer of work from cold callers who “happen to be in your area”. Don’t be fooled by business cards with websites and telephone numbers which look genuine. Politely take the card and say you will contact them at your convenience. You can then check their contact details or ask a family member or friend to do so on your behalf.
Planning permission, change of use, conversion and extensions, new build, works to listed buildings, building control approval, building and land appraisals.
Here are some simple but effective ways to ‘winter proof’ your home and garden, and avoid a November nightmare:
Tel: 07917 358101 Email: josh@jcarchitectural.co.uk jcarchitecturalconsultant
1) Check all external pipes for breaks, leaks, and blockages. Blocked or leaking pipes can freeze during the cold months, then expand and burst, causing potentially expensive water damage.

2) Think about insulation. A properly insulated property is an absolute must. Make sure that you check the basics, starting with obvious draft points. Invest in some draft excluder to keep doors and windows secure. Check the cladding around your boiler and pipes, and make sure that taps don’t leak.
FREE* Georgia toilet & basin with every bathroom order
3) Bleed your radiators. A great way to warm up your property is to bleed the radiators. This releases any trapped air, allowing hot water to fill every part of your radiator and warm the property more efficiently. 4) Arrange for a professional to service your boiler each year. As everyone starts to switch on or boost their central heating, the surge in gas consumption can lead to a big increase in boiler breakdowns.

Looking After Your Loved Ones BY MATTHEW BIGGS – FINANCIAL PLANNER
I
’m sure we can all agree that 2020 has felt like one of the longest years on record, and unlike anything any of us would have ever experienced beforehand. What’s more, the restrictions don’t look like they’re going anywhere anytime soon.
A lot has been said about coronavirus and the effects it has on people of all ages, but one thing that cannot be argued is that it affects the elderly the most. I can recall speaking to my grandmother, who was one of many elderly people who were instructed to shield during the majority of the lockdown, and her telling me that she was going stir crazy not being able to leave the house, but at the same time completely understood the reason she had to remain indoors and isolated from the rest of the population. This did present the issue of how she was going to look after her affairs whilst not being able to leave her house (she is of the generation that still favours the personal approach, as opposed to completing everything over the internet).

Fortunately, she had taken the precautions of arranging Lasting Power of Attorney documents, so her loved ones were able to step in and act on her behalf whilst she was unable to do so. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney documents – ‘Health and Welfare’ and ‘Property and Financial’ affairs. They are pretty much “what it says on the tin”; one document enables a loved one to act on your behalf for all things financial and the other allows them to make decisions regarding health and welfare, should you not be in a position to do so yourself. We believe Lasting Power of Attorneys are a vital part of financial planning and offer something that money simply cannot buy … peace of mind, and that is something that is in short supply at the moment! If you would like to speak to a member of our team regarding Lasting Power of Attorneys, please contact our office on 01778 342291 for a FREE initial consultation.

Just Selling... It’s What We Do!
M
any estate agents have leapt into property lettings as a way of buoying up their flagging sales departments. It has provided an additional revenue when times would otherwise have been extremely tough. But we have not taken this route. We are sales specialists, not a “jack of all trades”. After all, the lettings procedure is a very different discipline, with its own set of complex regulations. It also requires a different kind of agent, who can deal with maintenance issues, complaining tenants etc. However, as the market once again swings, in favour of sales, we hear of several agents who are now redeploying their letting agents into sales, with confusing consequences, to say the least!
BY PAUL BRIGGS
We’re glad we stuck to what we know. Our staff are superb at selling property – it’s what we do! We get a buzz out of every sale, which is handled by a dedicated professional who really knows what he or she is doing. Despite the busy atmosphere in our office, we continue to provide an enjoyable service to our valued clients, which is based on honesty, integrity and proven results. So, if you are considering letting as a possible alternative to selling, then choose an agent who handles both. However, if you are determined to sell without compromise and want a friendly dedicated service that will help you achieve this aim, at the highest price the market will pay and within a convenient timescale, you know who to call! We look forward to being of service.

The block paving driveways provided by EcoDrives are becoming an increasingly popular choice, due to the versatile design opportunities. Block paving is available in a wide range of styles and patterns, meaning they can be used to create a truly unique design, fitting your individual needs and taste. This type of surface is very durable and can withstand heavy use and harsh weather conditions, while only requiring occasional cleaning to keep it looking its best. It prevents surface water build-up due to the porous nature of the materials used, allowing for a more eco-friendly block paving service.

Resin driveways are a long-lasting and easy-tomaintain option to transform the front of your home. An eco-friendly alternative, thanks to the non-toxic materials used, and available in a range of colours, a resin driveway is naturally draining, meaning no more puddles from heavy rainfall. They are highly resistant to rust, oil, corrosion, salt and cracking, and are also the safest option, being resistant to abrasion, slipping, indentation and ignition.

“ S
Pop a Poppy Picture in Your Window to Mark Remembrance Sunday! ”
ays Phil Dilks, Chairman of Langtoft, Deepings and District Royal British Legion:
“Local volunteers are determined Remembrance Sunday and the Poppy Appeal can go ahead safely this year, despite Covid-19. Of course, it would be irresponsible to risk spreading the disease by pressing on with Remembrance parades in Market Deeping and Deeping St James which usually see dozens of all ages taking part, as well as hundreds of well-wishers watching on. But we still plan to lay traditional poppy wreaths, albeit in closed ceremonies while observing social distance requirements. We’ve already made our annual visit to the Commonwealth War Graves of local servicemen who died of wounds suffered in the First or Second World Wars and who are laid to rest in burial grounds in Barholm, Baston, Deeping St James, Langtoft and Market Deeping.” The annual Poppy Appeal funds the vital work of the Royal British Legion in supporting those who have served in our Armed Forces, and their families, when they need our help. But the pandemic has meant a massive challenge for our Poppy Appeal Organiser, Sue Stephenson. Sue reports, “The latest is house-to-house collections are not allowed but, subject to Covid-19 precautions, we’ll have poppies and pins on our Tesco stand on the two Fridays and Saturdays leading to Remembrance Sunday (October 30th and 31st and November 6th and 7th). We’re most grateful to Tesco and other local stores and pubs where it is also hoped poppies will also be available.”
As most people will mark Remembrance Sunday at home this year, we’re encouraging everyone to display a picture, painting or drawing of a poppy in your front window – in the same way rainbows were displayed in support of NHS staff earlier in the year.
One thing is for sure: We will remember them! Photo: In Remembrance – Phil Dilks proudly wears the medals of his late father, Master Aircrew Maurice Dilks, including the Distinguished Flying Medal awarded for his courage in a 1943 air battle over the Bay of Biscay. His U-boat hunting RAF Liberator was eventually shot down and he miraculously survived a week in a dinghy before being rescued by a Royal Navy frigate.
WHY NOT COLOUR IN THESE POPPIE S AND POP THEM IN YOUR WINDOW?

Cat Fights
utumn is here and vets can expect to see an increase in fighting amongst cats and the eruption of abscesses. Spring and autumn are the mating seasons for cats and the ‘entire’ tom cats are gearing up to defend their territories. As cat ownership is on the increase, the density of cats in an area also increases and this in turn makes cat fights more common. We rarely see cat fights, although we can often hear them; the yowl of an angry tom, about to launch an attack, is one that brings fear to the heart of any vet or vet nurse. If your cat has been bitten, you won’t necessarily see any wound. Instead, your cat may feel very tired, take itself off to a quiet corner and sleep. If you try to stroke him, he may hiss or spit when you touch the sore area. Cat teeth are covered with bacteria and, when they bite with their fangs (the canine teeth), those bacteria get injected deep under the skin. They can circulate around your cat’s bloodstream and start a generalised infection with fever, inappetence (lack of appetite), and lethargy. Until your cat’s temperature reduces to normal, he will feel pretty rough indeed. Over the course of the next few hours, the body begins to fight the bacteria, sending its white blood
60
Wise Words By Deirdre Wilson
cells to the damaged area to engulf and destroy the bacteria. It is a war, and many of the body’s cells are killed during it. The resulting debris on the battlefield is pus. As the pus builds up it forms a swelling under the skin – the abscess – which may burst through the skin releasing stinking yellowy/green pus. This release of pressure actually reduces the pain and aids in clearing the infection, so vets will also lance ripe abscesses, flushing it out and allowing air into the wound. Abscesses tend to occur on the face, around the jowls when cats are fighting head to head, so you often see one side of the face massively enlarged You probably will not see the cat bite as the skin seals over it but your cats gives you lots of warning if you try to touch the area! Lancing the abscess, possibly under sedation, and a course of antibiotics, usually clears the infection quickly. Cat bites can also transfer life-threatening viruses such as Feline Leukaemia Virus (FeLV) and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV), so trying to prevent cat fights is important but very difficult. Keep your cat in at night since cats are nocturnal and most fights occur then. Vaccinate your cat against FeLV (there is no vaccine against FIV) as it will provide a good deal of protection against this disease. And finally, always, always neuter your cats, both male and female. Not only will it reduce fighting, it will also reduce the massive number of unwanted kittens we have in the UK.

. Because of its situation on the Great North Road, many people have passed through Stamford over the centuries. If they were just travelling, their encounters were usually extremely brief, but often repeated. Some of these people were famous or became so; some came for work or another specific purpose, while others lived here for a while, before moving on. 21st – Jan. 21st - “Play @ Home” – Lyngo Theatre, Online portal of videos, creative tasks and more (hosted by Lyngo, full details will be on their web listing). £12 per family. 25th - “Pint of Poetry”: 8pm. The last Wednesday of every month, Stamford poets (and budding poets) perform live stand-up poetry. Enjoy reading aloud to an appreciative crowd. Or if you prefer, simply enjoy the poetry of others. All are welcome! Zoom event – e-mail karen.b@stamfordartscentre.com for entry/ to participate.
