Introduction

Welcome to Your August Issue. Welcome to our August issue of your favourite community lifestyle magazine. As I write, the Covid-19 focus has now moved onto the facemask, and whether or not they should be compulsory. Months ago, I remember reading a newspaper article about a lady who had been cutting up one of her bras to make a face mask. The headline, of course, just had to be “Get it off your chest”! In a way, the face mask has become our new bra! It can be awkward to put on and feel uncomfortable, we don’t need to wear it around the house, but when we go outside without one on, everyone notices... especially the men! I continue to be so impressed with the many ways people in our area have pulled together, sharing and caring, all keen to come out of this horrible pandemic, stronger than before. Businesses are contacting us with their ambitious plans for a better future. Every week seems a little closer to the time when we can say that we’re back to normal. Meanwhile, let’s keep on our guard, follow the advice and keep caring for each other.

Claire x

Having been deprived of spending time outside of the home mixing with friends and family because of the coronavirus lockdown, I for one am praying for good weather for what’s left of the summer. It has been great that for the past few weeks people have been allowed to socialise more even though, of course, we all must continue to do so safely. However, unfortunately, the English weather is not to be trusted. I’ve lost count of the days that I have had to change my attire from trousers and long-sleeved top to shorts and T-shirt and then back again because of the changing skies... Sadly, two of Whittlesey’s major annual events have fallen victim to the coronavirus pandemic. This year’s Whittlesey Festival, scheduled for September, has been called off as has next year’s Straw Bear Festival, planned for January 2021. The organisers of both events do a tremendous amount of work to put them on and provide entertainment for not only Whittlesey residents, but also for countless visitors from further afield. Let’s hope that both events will soon return bigger and better than ever…

Church Matters

WHITTLESEY CHRISTIAN CHURCH

Facing Fear

I recall an image in a magazine depicting a man sitting on a sofa watching TV with his hair standing up and a horrified look on his face as he looked at a huge animal shadow on the lounge wall. The next image showed a brightly lit hallway behind him. A cat was standing on its hind legs, its front legs stretched up the door frame with the hall light switched on behind the cat. The image being thrown onto the lounge wall certainly looked real, but things were not as they appeared. Life can be a little like this from time to time. In the Old Testament is a record of a man called Job, his prosperity, influence, and social standing was legendary. Yet in just a short space of time he lost it all. Those he turned to for guidance appeared not to understand where his real problem lay. Then, as if a light bulb was switched on, he said these immortal words… “The very thing I feared has happened to me.”

At some point in his past Job had identified a fear in his life. Yet, like many today, he chose to ignore or bury it in the hope it would simply go away. But it never does. It may not plague you every day, but don’t be fooled into thinking it has disappeared. Given the right set of circumstances and it will break through all our human defences. The thing we should fear is fear itself. The Bible makes a powerful statement, “Fear brings torment”. If you’re suffering from fear today, let me encourage you to face it. You may find it’s not the big issue you first thought. Talk to someone you can trust, and who is willing to support and encourage you. Fear can be conquered. Some typical indicators of hearing problems may be asking people to repeat themselves, turning the television up, struggling to hear in noisy environments, or confusing words or misunderstanding what is being said in a conversation. It is often a friend or family member that notices beforehand. If you can identify with any of these, then it is important to book a hearing assessment to determine whether hearing loss is present, and to eliminate simple things such as earwax.

SOUND ADVICE HEARING: Open Again and Covid-19 Compliant If you have been struggling with your hearing recently and found it difficult to interact with family and friends, then contact us to have your hearing assessed in a safe and friendly environment. It is estimated that as many as 1 in 6 people in the UK have some degree of hearing loss, which equates to about ten million people in the country. Hearing loss usually occurs gradually; it can be an inconvenience, can cause embarrassment, depression, isolation, and has been linked to mental health issues. On average, it takes between ten and fifteen years to come to terms with it. This is a shame, because the ability to hear sound is one of the most important senses, yet unlike vision (or your teeth) it is often taken for granted.

This is where Sound Advice Hearing can help. We are a local independent, family business, with full-time hearing centres in Market Deeping and Kings Lynn. Contact us now to book your FREE hearing test. A New Revolutionary Hearing Aid We are pleased to announce the introduction of the latest hearing aid to take the world by storm. In Memory Of

REMEMBERING...

Derek Brightley

W

hittlesea resident, Derek Brightley, passed away recently, aged eighty-eight. Derek was born in Turves on March 30th, 1931 and had one sister and two brothers.

After getting married, Davina taught in Whittlesea and Derek joined the Police Reserve which he served for twenty years. He helped to set up the Neighbourhood Watch in Priors Road, and also joined the British Legion, selling poppies for many years. They had one son, David, who joined the RAF Police as a dog handler, seeing action in Afghanistan during his thirty years in the Force.

The whole family moved to Whittlesea where he met Davina, his wife-to-be, and took an interest in dancing. After his National Service he started work in Fletton’s brickyard, becoming a senior foreman, whilst Davina trained to become a teacher.

Derek’s last employment was with BT, and his final year was spent in Keneydon House in Whittlesea with dementia, where the staff were excellent, particularly Derek’s carer, Rebecca. Sadly, Derek succumbed to cancer. Davina concludes, “He was a lovely husband and I miss him dreadfully. I can look back on my happy marriage and think how lucky I was and what good memories I have.”

Matters A MESSAGE FROM THE TOWN MAYOR

My first contribution as the new Mayor and leader of Whittlesey Town Council has to be one of thanks. My initial thanks go to my fellow councillors for placing their confidence in me by electing me for an unprecedented second term in office, my first spell being 2013-2015. However, it would be remiss of me not to pay tribute to my predecessor, Cllr Mrs Julie Windle, who has just completed two years of exceptional dedication as Mayor. During that time Julie, with the unstinted support of her husband and consort, Robert, has not only represented Whittlesey in civic engagements in Cambridgeshire and the adjoining counties but has engaged herself in many aspects of the local community while leading the town council in the numerous day to day tasks required to ensure a smooth running of the administration. As we all know, the earlier part of this year has seen an unprecedented situation caused by the terrible coronavirus epidemic which has spread across the world, and in the UK alone at time of writing claimed more than forty-five thousand lives. However, this catastrophic situation has brought out the best from many with the health workers quite rightly topping the list of those who have gone beyond the call of duty on behalf of others. Key workers in industry, commerce and schools have played their part but we must not forget the many acts of kindness shown by our local community to our neighbours, many of whom have found themselves self-isolating for long periods and cut off from their family, friends and social circles. There have been many organisations who have stepped forward and lent their talents in the cause of others but two who stand out in our town during the present crisis are Helping Whittlesey and Whittlesey Emergency Food Aid, both of whom are eternally grateful for the many donations of food and cash to enable them to function effectively. With its many volunteers, Helping Whittlesey has maintained regular deliveries of food and other essentials to those citizens who could not leave their homes and in conjunction with local food suppliers has provided literally hundreds of cooked meals on a weekly basis. 10

Since 2014 Whittlesey Emergency Food Aid has helped countless families in the town and surrounding villages who have found themselves in distress and their work has continued throughout the recent crisis and will continue well beyond. Assistance can be given in confidence by in the first instance contacting either Brian Smithyman or Marija Lysak on 01733 752093. I would also like to single out for special praise Fenland District Council who have worked tirelessly to ensure that funding from central government has reached those businesses and organisations that otherwise may well have folded under the recent economic pressures. We have experienced dark times in Whittlesey of late and we are not out of the woods yet. Unfortunately many of our regular festivals and events have been cancelled as a result of the present situation and this has impacted not only on pleasure for our community in general but also on the businesses who depend on these events for their income. During these harsh times I would ask that we continue to look out for each other and support the local businesses wherever possible. There is indeed light at the end of a very long tunnel and considerable financial investment will be made in Whittlesey in the coming months and years, more of which I hope to inform you of in the next edition of this magazine, so watch this space!! Cllr David K M Mason Mayor and Leader Whittlesey Town Council AUGUST 2020

MAJOR TOWN FESTIVALS ARE CANCELLED Two of Whittlesey’s major annual events have been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. This year’s Whittlesey Festival, scheduled for September, has been called off, as has next year’s Straw Bear Festival, planned for January 2021. In a statement on behalf of the Whittlesey Festival steering and partners groups, Brian Smithyman, chairman, said: “The committee has not taken this decision lightly as the festival has grown year on year to become a major family event in the town’s calendar; drawing many thousands of people to visit our town and spend most of the day enjoying the host of attractions and events and visiting the many shops who choose to open. “With all the uncertainty it was felt we could not justify the expense or time involved in its organisation. Hopefully, we will be able to return in 2021 to once more present something this town can be justifiably proud of.” Roger Boon, director, Whittlesey Straw Bear Festival, said: “Due to the COVID-19 pandemic still present in general circulation and as there are no announced guidelines regarding ‘mass gatherings’ set by the UK government, we regret to announce that as festival organisers we have made the decision to cancel the 2021 festival. “We feel very fortunate to have actually held our 2020 festival in January and as event organisers are truly saddened to have to make this announcement. We have spent significant funds running the 2020 festival and money made at that event would normally be progressively spent or pledged to cover infrastructure, performing artists and other costs of staging the next festival. “By cancelling now, we can secure festival funding for future years, when we are assured that the event can take place. As a not-for-profit organisation we have limited reserves so we must act prudently.”

WHITTLESEY COUNCILLOR SURGERIES TO RESUME Whittlesey Town Council will be resuming their Councillor Surgeries from Saturday September 5th 2020. They will be held in Peel House at 8 Queen Street from 9.30am to 10.30am on the first Saturday of every month throughout 2020. If you have any matters of concern and wish to discuss with a councillor, then please come along and let us know. AU GUS T 2 020

RESIDENTS ASKED TO HAVE THEIR SAY ON CONSERVATION AREA Residents are being asked to have their say on a review of a Fenland village conservation area, including a revision to its conservation area boundary. Fenland District Council has reviewed the Coates Conservation Area to better understand the character and significance of the area and assess whether the boundaries are up-to-date, to help preserve and enhance the area in future. Now it has published a draft Coates Conservation Area Appraisal and management plan – and is seeking the public’s views. The appraisal includes a minor amendment to the conservation area boundary and proposals for the area’s future management. Residents can share their views on the documents via a public consultation running until Wednesday, August 5th. Visit: www.fenland.gov.uk/consultations Conservation areas are areas of special architectural and historic interest, formally designated by local authorities to recognise their interests and provide them with protection. Cllr Chris Seaton, Fenland District Council’s portfolio holder for heritage, said: “As part of our duty to preserve or enhance conservation areas, it is important to understand what makes it a special place and we do this by producing conservation area appraisals. “An appraisal identifies features which make a positive or negative contribution to the character or appearance of the conservation area and are an important tool to help the council ensure they are properly looked after.” Any comments or suggestions on the draft documents should be submitted by 5pm on Wednesday, August 5th. They can be submitted by emailing: conservation@fenland.gov.uk or sent to: Conservation Section, Fenland District Council, Fenland Hall, County Road, March, PE15 8NQ.

Matters NEW WAYS TO PAY FOR COUNCIL SERVICES

Fenland District Council has introduced a new way to pay for council services, giving residents more choice and convenience when paying their bills. From July 13th, people have been able to make payments for council bills and invoices, such as council tax, at their local Post Office and at around thirty shops, petrol stations and newsagents, which display the PayPoint sign, across the district. Paying for bills at Post Offices and PayPoint locations is in addition to being able to make

payments via direct debit, online via www.fenland. gov.uk, the council’s contact centre on 01354 654321 and the council’s customer service centres and community hubs. To make a payment at a Post Office or PayPoint outlet, customers simply need to present their barcoded bill to the retailer and confirm how much they would like to pay. The retailer will then provide a receipt and the payment will be credited within three working days. For more information, visit: www.fenland.gov.uk/paypoint

O

ne of Whittlesey’s best-known retailers is now fully back in business following the coronavirus epidemic.

Kellyvision KCS Limited is delighted to be once again satisfying local customers’ requirements who they want to thank for their continued support during the crisis. Company Secretary Tina Cawood said: “We have been overwhelmed by the support we have received from our customers, both old and new. It has been an absolutely fantastic response from them, and we want to say a massive ‘thank you’ to them. It was a particularly worrying time when the lockdown first started back in March and everyone was unsure of what was going to happen but the support we have received has been amazing.” Director Lee Cochrane agreed: “Following a short period of furloughing we started to take telephone orders and dropped goods off at our customers’ homes but now we are so pleased to be able to offer

full delivery, installation and removal of items. We welcome people into the store and have returned to our normal opening hours, providing our full range of services. All the staff are back, and we have the necessary PPE measures in place in the store such as signage, sanitisers and social distancing that are now required to keep everyone safe.” Lee said that there has been a lot of interest in all aspects of the business, citing kitchens and televisions as examples of increased customer demand. Kellyvision was founded in 1983 by Mr Kelley Shipp and has built up an enviable reputation across the region since by meeting its customers’ changing needs from televisions, videos and audio equipment to all domestic home appliances including built-in as well as free-standing items and now has a range of kitchens on display too. Your Garden

August Gardening Tips

A

ugust is the month when you reap the fruits of your labour and hopefully you will have a bumper harvest. In fact, sometimes you have far more than you can eat but there are several ways of preserving the fruit and vegetables for use through the winter months.

Several root vegetables store well in a cool, ventilated spot such as a shed or garage. Root crops, such as carrots and parsnips should have their leaves and loose soil removed and then put into layers of damp sand. Potatoes should be dried off in the sun and then stored in hessian sacks. I went to the local fish and chip shop and they gave me their old paper potato bags! There are not many things you can sow or plant now for harvesting this year, maybe salad leaves, a last planting of carrots or turnips and some leafy vegetables such as chard. However, as space becomes available when crops finish, you can plant overwintering crops such as Brussels sprouts, spring cabbage and winter cauliflowers. Cabbage seeds can be planted in a temporary bed or in pots or modules; remember to cover them with nets to keep off the birds and caterpillars. • Prune gooseberry and currant bushes. •

14

Strawberry runners that have been potted can be transplanted into a sunny, fertile spot where you have not grown them for at least three years. Planting them through plastic will help conserve moisture and provide warmth during the winter.

D I S C O V E R I N G

Whittlesea

• Make sure that you harvest courgettes regularly, before they grow too large. •

Cut to the ground all summer-fruiting raspberry canes that have borne fruit this year and tie in the new green canes that will produce next year’s fruit.

• Tomatoes, pumpkins and squash need feeding with a tomato fertiliser. •

Outdoor tomatoes should have their growth stopped by the middle of the month – nip out the leading growing shoot just above the highest truss. Continue pinching out and do not forget to provide support for the plants as they become more heavily laden – also for cucumbers, peppers and even fruit trees.

• Keep earthing up potatoes to prevent the tubers being exposed and also brassicas to support unsteady stems. •

Dig over any spaces that have been left from harvesting crops, where you could grow ‘green manure’, such as clover or vetch, which will provide nitrogen for the soil, or alfalfa, cress or mustard which will help break up the soil.

Pinch out the tops of climbing beans when they reach the top of the canes, as this will encourage growth lower down, and harvest regularly before they become tough and stringy: you can let some grow on to produce bean seeds for next year.

Be on the lookout for potato blight, especially if the weather is damp and humid. Cut off the stems at ground level as soon as you see the tell-tale brown fungal patches. This prevents the blight reaching the tubers.

Enjoy!

Nature

Nature Notes

August is the month when high summer turns to late summer. If the weather is hot, the countryside starts to look parched and tired, as grasses brown and even tree leaves start to wilt.

I

n the hedgerows, the blackberries have already started to ripen, going from green to red then finally black. Elderberries also ripen and are feasted on by hungry birds, such as starlings and blackbirds. Other berries are ripening too, such as hawthorn (‘haws’), blackthorn (‘sloes’) and rose hips. These will provide sustenance for many species through the harsh winter months. For now, food is plentiful, although the dry ground can cause problems for the ground feeding birds. Early in the month, grey squirrels are impatient and insist on cracking open the pale green hazel nuts and they can be heard chattering and squealing at one another. Aggressive confrontations can lead to tree top chases. Hot days also bring the restful sound of grasshoppers calling (‘stridulating’) from the long grass, advertising their territories. They are difficult to spot due to their green or brown colour, but soon hop to reveal themselves if disturbed, only to disappear again. In Britain, the species most likely to be spotted are the common green, common field and the meadow grasshopper.

Habitats

Road verges: In the bases of many hedges, ‘lords and ladies’ have totally died down, other than the ripening fruiting stem, with its poisonous red berries. This is the ‘lady’ part. Meadows: Where grasslands, be they pastures or meadows, are overgrazed the ground is often exposed (poached) and plants such as ragwort and creeping thistle can colonise and thrive. Rivers and ponds: Rivers are thickly fringed with white flowered meadow sweet, great willowherb, purple loosestrife and emergent grass species such as reedcanary grass. The water crowfoot will be lush and wide spreading in the clean and fast flowing rivers. Where the river is slower, and hence more silty, yellow water lily may be present, and will have been in flower now for some time.

Birds

House martins are finally emerging from their mud cup nests encouraged by adults who swoop and chatter around them. Large flocks of martins and swallows can be seen over fields. Sometimes swallows, particularly, can be seen lined up together on telegraph wires preening themselves. August sees the departure of the majority of swifts, whilst migrant birds are, however, with us for a while yet.

Woodlands (including wood pasture): Some trees may start to show changes in colour. Seeds are ripening and soon large-leaved lime, sycamore, field maple and hornbeam will drop their winged seeds. In August though, the wings are all still green and growing. Fields and hedgerows: Invasions of house sparrows may be a thing of the past now, but they can still be seen, as the wheat ripens, enjoying the feast.

Consumer Advice Ensure Post-Lockdown Doorstep Scammers Don’t Give You the Summertime Blues by Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades Over the past few months, the COVID-19 lockdown has halted life for so many people, not least the doorstep rogue traders. However, as the restrictions continue to be eased, the fraudsters have once again begun to make life a misery for the elderly and the vulnerable, who are being caught off guard by Coronavirus scammers. Many people have been waiting weeks and weeks to have their windows cleaned, garden spruced up, property exterior painted or driveway re-paved. Whatever the job – big or small – don’t be tempted to give the work to someone who cold calls you at your home, claiming to be ‘carrying out similar work in the area’. Firstly, they have caught you unawares, a time when you don’t really have time to think and make an informed decision; they can be very persuasive. Secondly, any offer which appears too good to be true often is. Common reports include: • Taking a deposit and never returning to do the work. • Quoting a price and then increasing the cost as the job progresses. • No statutory cancellation notices, guarantees or warranties provided. • Producing poor quality work and refusing to sort out problems or finish the work. Avoiding Rogue Traders Advice: 1) Be cautious; if a trader knocks at your door, do not agree to on-the-spot house repairs without taking advice. Say 'no thank you' and close the door. 2) Be wary of special offers. They will use tactics such as “I am only in your area today and would need to do the work now.” 3) Do not believe when told that guttering, roofing, gardening or paving work is in need of urgent repair – this may cause you to panic and allow the work to take place. 4) Do not allow anyone to pressure you into agreeing to have work carried out. If you ask them to leave and they don't, they are committing a criminal offence – contact the police on 999. 5) Do not make snap decisions. If you feel that any work needs carrying out on your property, take time to talk to family or neighbours before you make a decision. 6) Don't ever go to a bank or cash point with a trader; legitimate traders would never do this! Always use a reputable tradesperson, like the members of Safe Local Trades. Download a copy of Cambs Police's 'Not all callers are genuine' advice booklet at www.bit.ly/Avoid-Rogue-Traders AUGUST 2020

TOM’S BUSINESS VISION A SUCCESS Westbrook Window Repairs has enjoyed an excellent first year in business. It offers a top-quality service for a wide range of jobs including new windows and doors; misted windows; dropped doors; replacement locks and hinges; and cat and dog flaps. The company was formed in May 2019 by March man Tom Westbrook who has more than 26 years’ experience in manufacturing, fitting and repairing windows and has received a very positive response from satisfied local customers. Tom (43) said: “The first year has gone even better than I had hoped. I’m proud to have had 836 ‘likes’ on my Facebook page with more than thirty five-star reviews. “I pride myself on providing an honest, professional and personal service and I would like to thank all my customers who have supported me. I’ve had lots of recommendations and have also gained plenty of repeat business which I am extremely grateful for.”

The business has been so successful that Tom has had to take on another person on an ad hoc basis to help with larger jobs. The majority of his work comes from the March area and he has praised the leads he has obtained via Discovering March magazine. He said: “We have had a very good response from entries in the magazine. People like the magazine and consequently tend to keep hold of the copies which means they are read by a lot of people over a long period of time.” Tom is assisted in the business by his partner Suzanne, who said: "Tom provides an honest service, to local customers. He prides himself on his ability to repair most windows and doors, which is more cost effective for the customer. He is always happy to provide honest advice to look for a fixable solution to any problematic windows or doors. When new windows and doors are needed, he takes great pride in his work to ensure a satisfied customer every time.” You can contact Westbrook Window Repairs for a free no obligation quote by ringing 01354 653445 or 07949 457029 Email: westbrookwindowrepairs@gmail.com

an unexpected bonus tax efficiently without needing a structured meeting for advice. Customers can even add other assets such as property and bank accounts so that at any time they can see a snapshot of their estate valuation. If arrangements need attending to, the platform will handle fund switches, prepare tax statements, deliver income, or lump sums to authorised accounts and link with a wide range of similar providers if required.

Having several plans can be confusing if the associated annual reports from pensions, bonds, unit trusts, and ISAs come from a variety of providers at various times. One answer is to develop a super spreadsheet and keep it up-to-date with colourful graphs and predictions. Many of my clients have neither the time nor inclination to do this but rely on a modern platform that will do all the work for them. They can log on when they want or even access it on a smart phone or other device from any location at any time. Some provide access to top up investments when the markets are weak or to mop up

Reports can be generated by any party; online virtual meetings are a cinch and face-to-face meetings or virtual ones can be arranged on short notice through the platform. COVID-19: Keeping our Clients and Staff Safe

s the lockdown eases and we are slowly returning to a new normal way of offering our services, we would like to thank all our clients for their kind understanding and patience during these difficult times. During the pandemic we have continued to provide our patients with treatment and care via video/telephone consultations and where needed at the surgery.

Now as we move forward, it is very important to continue to keep our clients and staff members safe, so we ask that you please understand why we ask you to follow our guidelines.

Routine/preventative procedures are not back to normal service; however, each enquiry will be assessed case by case. Due to the new ways of working to keep our clients and staff safe, our services do take a longer time than they would pre-coronavirus, reducing the numbers of patients we can see each day. We ask that you please bear with us as we prioritise appointments and surgical operations and understand that as a last resort, we may need to reschedule non-urgent appointments e.g. vaccinations, to see those requiring urgent treatment.

We also ask our clients to please telephone The social distancing rule still applies when 01733 685514, email info@whittleseyvets.co.uk attending the surgery and we ask that you please or use our website www.whittleseyvets.co.uk to do not come into the surgery but kindly wait in pre-order food, flea and worm treatments, repeat the car park, unless specifically asked to enter the medications etc. and book appointments.
