Introduction
Welcome to Your December Issue. Inside Highlights
A very warm welcome to this, our last issue of 2020, and let’s hope that very soon we’ll be seeing much more light at the end of what has been the darkest of dark tunnels this year, with so much disruption and despair all around. Let me express my sincere thanks to all the team here at Discovering Magazines for all their magnificent efforts to produce our magazines this year. It’s not been easy at times, so huge thanks go to everyone who has helped us in any way, especially our advertisers and contributors, with their regular features, wonderful advice and suggestions. Best wishes to you all for Christmas and for 2021 – good luck, but most importantly, good health!

December is traditionally dominated by the celebration of Christmas. It is the time of year when families and friends join together for the festive season and recall bygone times and look forward to making new memories. This year, however, it seems things could be very different. At the time of writing, it was still to be announced what, if any, restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic will be lifted to enable people to celebrate together this year. Whatever happens, I would like to wish you all a very merry Christmas and I would also like to take this opportunity to thank you, our readers, and also our contributors and advertisers for supporting us throughout what has been a difficult year for everyone. The Discovering team always strives to supply you with the best possible publication each month, but it would be impossible without your help, so please keep up the good work and keep us informed of your activities in the New Year. So, on behalf of all the staff on the magazine, please stay safe, and we look forward to seeing you again in 2021…

Recipe
-EggnogThis deliciously creamy eggnog recipe is a little taste of Christmas history. George Washington, the first American president, even made his own... so why not give it a try?!
Method
Ingredients Serves 12
6 medium free-range eggs, separated 150g golden caster sugar 500ml whole milk 400ml double cream 350ml rum, bourbon or a mixture of the two, depending on your preference Freshly grated nutmeg, to taste Cinnamon sticks to decorate Recipe from www.bbc.co.uk/food

D I S C O V E R I N G
• Whisk the egg yolks in a bowl with 100g/3½ oz of the caster sugar until the mixture is pale yellow and thick (this is best done with an electric handheld mixer). • Stir in the milk, double cream, and the rum and/or bourbon. You can add a little grated nutmeg as well, if you like your nog this way. • Pour the mixture into two 750ml/1½ pint bottles with stoppers and store in the fridge for up to two weeks. (The alcohol will prevent the eggs or cream spoiling.) • Place the egg whites in a box and freeze until ready to serve the eggnog. • When ready to serve, defrost the egg whites into a clean metal or glass bowl. Using a handheld electric mixer, whisk the egg whites until foamy and opaque. Add the remaining 50g of sugar and whisk the egg whites until soft peaks form when the whisk is removed. • Pour the eggnog from the bottles into a large bowl and fold in the egg whites until well combined. Ladle the eggnog into glass tumblers and serve with a little freshly grated nutmeg over the top of each glass.

We will drive slowly down the larger roads. If you live on a small side road please come and wave to Santa (socially distanced of course) at the top of your road. We will be unable to stop to allow the children to talk to Santa and are unable to give out sweets. We will not be collecting money door-to-door as normal. The below is a guide to where Santa will be – we are hoping to have a Santa Tracker with us to give a better idea where exactly we are. Daily information will be published on Whittlesey Lions Facebook page and other local Facebook pages. Nicola Opens New Beauty Business
A
new business has opened in Whittlesey specialising in semi-permanent make-up treatments.
Beautifully Defined by Nicola has been launched by Nicola Paterson, a fully trained semi-permanent make-up artist. The business is located within the Enhance Beauty Salon in Eastgate, Whittlesey, and after initially planning to open in November this year it is scheduled to open for customers after the current lockdown on Friday, December 4th. Beautifully Defined by Nicola offers semi-permanent eyeliner, lip liner and lip blush (gloss & go lips), powder brows, Ombré brows, hair strokes brows and microblading treatments with new services planned to be added over the coming months. Nicola, who is from Whittlesey and currently lives here with her husband and family, is excited to bring this service to her hometown. Nicola (37) said: “I’ve been working as a Registered Pharmacy Technician for nearly 20 years and love my job but have always wanted to work for myself.
Nicola x With my new career I get to meet new people, and help them to look and feel great. I love the atmosphere of working in a salon and the sense of happiness and wellbeing it brings. “I am so pleased to have set up my business although the timing could have been better due to the lockdown. I can offer a range of semipermanent make-up treatments which are virtually pain-free and will last for between twelve and eighteen months. Also being part of the Enhance Beauty Team is exciting as I have known Michelle (the owner) since we were young so working together as adults is amazing.” Nicola is offering a 20% discount for clients who book up before the end of December 2020 and have their treatment before the end of February 2021. However, she warns she has only two appointment slots left for December. You can contact Beautifully Defined by Nicola at 5 Angel House, Eastgate, Whittlesey PE7 1SE Tel: 07414 907186 Email: beautifullydefinedbynicola@gmail.com or search Facebook.

Semi-permanent make-up Semi-permanent make-up is a quick and easy procedure that is practically painless, and which can give you a perfectly natural, made-up look, without spending hours in front of the mirror every day. Sometimes referred to as micropigmentation or cosmetic tattooing, semi-permanent make-up is a treatment that works by injecting tiny amounts of pigment into the superficial layers of your skin, using a fine vibrating needle.
Treatments include Eyeliner | Lip Blush (Gloss & Go Lips) Lip Liner | Powder Eyebrow | Ombré Brows Hair Strokes Brows | Microblading and more

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
By the time you read this article it is to be hoped that we shall all be emerging from the latest national lockdown necessitated by the increased numbers of positive COVID-19 cases recorded in the autumn. This dreadful situation has further curtailed events that we look forward to at this time of year, principally those associated with Remembrance Day, when we honour those who have given their lives for the country and when we support the Royal British Legion by buying poppies and attending events that raise much-needed funds that enable the RBL to support the veterans and families who have suffered as a result of past conflicts. This year, the usual Remembrance Day ceremonies in Whittlesey and the surrounding villages had to be cancelled as, with the unknown numbers that would wish to attend, it was impossible to comply with the mandatory contact and trace requirements.
most enjoyable broadcast on Remembrance Sunday to include a service, requested music and interviews which I am sure added to the occasion. I can truly say that I am proud to be Mayor of such a vibrant town, my thanks to everyone.
Nevertheless, I was delighted to witness the magnificent manner in which our community adapted to the situation. Wreaths were laid at the Whittlesey War Memorial respectfully, if less formally by many organisations, before and after Remembrance Sunday. Poppies were bought where possible and thanks go to Mrs Sue Taylor who braved the elements under the Buttercross on preceding Saturdays to sell poppies etc. Sue was also responsible for the ordering of the many wreaths that were laid at memorials in Whittlesey and the villages.
Whilst we will miss much of the traditional events, the carol services in our churches, Christmas extravaganza in the town, Santa's floats and grottos, etc. we will still be able to enjoy the traditional Christmas tree on the Buttercross and the Christmas lights in our main streets. For this we must thank the work of the Whittlesey Christmas Lights Committee which is able to provide us all with Christmas cheer at this difficult time.
The displays of home-made poppies mounted on boards throughout the town were an emotional reminder of the debt we owe to all who fell during the various campaigns and I am grateful to those persons under the direction of Deborah Slator who were responsible for the initiative. Donations as a result of the displays amounted to ÂŁ2246 which have been passed to the RBL, a magnificent effort. Further thanks to Fenland Youth Radio under the guidance of Robert Windle who put together a 12

So, we now look forward to Christmas which will also be so different this year.
It is my sincere wish that the present restrictions will be relaxed sufficiently to allow families to gather together at Christmas and celebrate the birth of Jesus who brought light and hope into the world during difficult times and is still with us today. Whatever your plans this Christmas, may I on behalf of my wife Ann and Whittlesey Town Council wish you all a joyous Christmas surrounded by those that you love. RIP ASHLEY SAVAGE A GoFundMe page has been set up for a Whittlesey man who lost his life in a car accident. Ashley Savage (25), of Dandelion Drive, was killed when his car was in collision with an HGV parked off-road on the B1043 in Conington in October. So far, more than £260 has been raised through the fund, RIP Ashley Savage. One of Ashley's neighbours in Whittlesey Green set up the page – Michelle Esposito said, “We are an amazing community and look out for each other and are really saddened by the news.”
CAR SCHEME DRIVERS TO TAKE CHRISTMAS BREAK Whittlesey Community Car Scheme drivers will be starting their Christmas break on Saturday, December 19th and will resume on Monday, January 4th, 2021.
GRANTS FOR BUSINESSES Fenland District Council has launched its Local Restrictions Support Grant (LRSG) scheme to distribute more than £1.3 million of government funding to support local businesses. It is aimed at helping businesses that were open as usual, but which were then legally required to close due to the national COVID-19 restrictions which came into force for a period of 28 days effective from November 5th. Businesses are now being urged to check the eligibility criteria at www.fenland.gov.uk/LRBSG and complete the claim form as soon as possible. Eligible businesses can claim the following amounts based on the rateable value of the property: • Businesses with a rateable value of £15,000 or under and who are eligible can claim for a grant of £1334 per 28-day qualifying restriction period. • Businesses with a rateable value of £15,001 to £50,999 and who are eligible can claim for a grant of £2000 per 28-day qualifying restriction period.
• Businesses with a rateable value of £51,000 and above and who are eligible can claim for a grant of £3000 per 28-day qualifying restriction period. Councillor Chris Boden, leader of Fenland District Council and portfolio holder for finance, said: “We are pleased to be launching this new scheme to help businesses across the district access this much-needed financial support. “We have successfully distributed almost £20 million of funding to over 1800 businesses so far and will ensure this latest funding is also handed out as swiftly as possible. I would strongly encourage businesses to check the eligibility and complete the online claims process to avoid any delays.” The council will also be distributing a further £2 million of government funding through its Additional Restrictions Grant (ARG) scheme. This discretionary scheme will support those businesses required to close or have been severely impacted by the national restrictions, but which do not pay business rates. Applications for the ARG scheme will open in due course – please keep an eye on the council’s website and social media for updates.

Sue Ryder
Forced To Launch Its Second Urgent Fundraising Appeal of 2020
N
ational healthcare charity Sue Ryder, which runs Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice in Peterborough, is launching its second urgent fundraising appeal of 2020.
The charity is experiencing a £2 million a month shortfall, whilst its doctors and nurses continue to play a vital part in the coronavirus effort. Sue Ryder is appealing to local people to support its urgent fundraising campaign ‘We can’t stop’ so that Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice can continue to provide the expert and compassionate end of life care it is so well known for. The hospice offers care and support to people with life-limiting conditions across the local region, as well as supporting their families. Allison Mann, hospice director of Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice, said: “Coronavirus has hit us hard. We received a wonderful response from our supporters to our emergency appeal earlier in the year. This, paired with the emergency funding that we received from the Government, covered our funding shortfall until the end of June 2020. “Unfortunately, however, our struggle continues. Our fundraising events remain cancelled for the rest of this year and our high street shops have now closed for a second time.
14
want to use their skills, expertise and experience to help patients and their families in the months ahead, as well continue to relieve the pressure on the NHS. However, in order to keep our services running through the winter and beyond we urgently need to secure more funding now. “We know that times are tough for everybody at the moment, so please be reassured that every bit really does help and thank you very much from all of us.” To support Sue Ryder visit: www.sueryder.org/winterappeal20

We can t stop caring.
“As we head into the winter months and coronavirus cases continue to rise, we are expecting an increase in people needing end of life care.
We’re facing an end-of-life care crisis. £21 from you could help pay for an hour of care for someone at the end of life.
“None of us expected this pandemic to go on for so long and clearly a monthly shortfall of £2 million is unsustainable for any charity, which is why we need to ask the public to help us.
Please donate today: sueryder.org/winterappeal

ALWAYS LOOK ON THE BRIGHT SIDE OF LIFE – CARE HOME RESIDENTS FILL THEIR DAYS WITH FUN AND LAUGHTER DESPITE SECOND UK LOCKDOWN What does a sausage, pumpkin, nail varnish and a famous teddy bear have in common? Well, they have all played an important role in the recent entertaining and, sometimes, let’s just say out-of-the-ordinary events and activities at Orchard House Care Home in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire. With so much uncertainty being experienced by everyone around the world, the team at Orchard House is determined to ensure it continues to bring joy, happiness, laughter, and excitement to residents’ lives. ~ “I feel like a new woman” ~ Barbara, Orchard House Resident Thinking outside of the box was definitely the case for one of its recent activities when residents and staff took part in a sausage making competition with other homes in the RCH Care Homes group in order to make a new ‘banger’. As part of the ‘Best Banger’ competition, residents took part in banger tasting, designing of the banger recipe, making their bangers and finally enjoying the finished product. In the end, they created two bangers with distinctly different flavours – one with marmalade and another with honey. Residents Molly and Phyllis helped judge: “Marmalade was the winner; it had a good flavour and it reminded us of Paddington Bear!” For Halloween and Bonfire Night, residents enjoyed traditional activities such as pumpkin carving, making a Guy Fawkes and sparklers; provoking reminiscence amongst the residents, they all proved to be very popular, “This is fantastic, I haven’t done one of these for 16
D I S C O V E R I N G
years,” was the joyous remark made by 96-year-old Betty after finishing her entry for the pumpkin carving competition. Although these light-hearted and fun events have thoroughly entertained the residents, it was also equally important to continue the tradition of remembering and honouring all who have died and fought in services during Remembrance Week. This year, residents and staff wrote poetry and came together to honour those who served in the Forces, including those living at Orchard House.
Our memories will never fade Remembering those who gave Crosses that lay row by row Heroes who took up quarrel with the foe Age did not weary them Respect, honour and sacrifice they gave Dads, husbands and brothers were lost
Hoping war won’t start again Our heros will never be forgotten Under the poppies in Flanders fields Soldiers are laid to rest Engulfed in a sea of red
Whittlesea
After the weeks of fun and actionpacked activities, residents took time to relax as part of National Spa and Wellness week, enjoying spa treatments such as manicures, foot spas and facials. They also participated in wellness activities such as Tai Chi, poetry narrations and meditation. The desired effect was achieved, with a resident commenting: “My feet feel so relaxed, I don’t want to put my slippers back on yet.” Fundraising has always been a massive part of Orchard House and so, for this year’s Children In Need, there was never a better way to fundraise C and celebrate than with a themed day! M As the trees lost their leaves and the weather cooled, a pyjama and duvet Y themed day was the perfect antidote, CM where residents enjoyed games and MY activities in connection with raising money for Children In Need. Fun and CY laughter was had by all in aid of such CMY a worthy cause as everyone joined in dressing up in onesies and pyjamas for K the day, feasting on hot chocolate and party food, and watching the staff take part in sack races. Activity co-ordinator Miranda who, along with her colleagues, had planned the events commented on the inspiration behind them said: “It has been really important for us to carry on celebrating events that we would normally at Orchard House. We’re a very active and engaging home and there is always something going on. The enjoyment and laughter had by all is infectious, I also love the fact that it brought back a lot of fond memories for all.” We wish you all a happy and safe December with new hope and dreams for the new year. In Memory Of
REMEMBERING...
Ken Oliver By Ashlea Mawby
W
hat is the first thing I think about when I think of my grandad? Well, mainly, his amazing energy. With his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, he was never too tired or too busy to spend time with us. He was always on trampolines, bouncy castles and zip-wires at an age where most would say: “You're too old for that.” This would just spur him on… He was a man of many talents – being able to yodel, whistle amazingly and play the mouth organ as well as being able to fix literally anything! Grandad was always the first one on the dancefloor at parties, eventually leading us to nickname him “Rubber Legs”. He always loved playing golf at Thorney Golf Club and his occasional glass of brandy. He came from very humble beginnings being the middle(ish) child of six, having four brothers and one sister. He would always be a grafter, starting work from a young age and being a little bit cheeky/ naughty in between. As a young man he spent his National Service posted in Egypt and upon returning, started work at the brick pits in Whittlesey. This is where he met my nan, Dawn, and from a simple motorbike ride their love blossomed and they were soon married, spending well over sixty years together, something many don't manage to achieve.
Grandad and I always used to discuss politics quite a bit. I found a kindred spirit in him as he was a 'lefty' like me and we shared the same views. Our dislike of Boris Johnson and Jeremy Clarkson still makes me smile to this day. Unfortunately, due to a tragic accident, my grandad passed away in September last year, devastating the family. We all miss him dearly and wish that he was still here with us. We will never get over losing him, but we are slowly managing to learn how to be without him. The legend that was Ken Oliver will stay alive within all who knew and loved him. He truly was an amazing man.

WHITTLESEY AND THE VILLAGES
Remember Prior to Remembrance Sunday, The Mayor of Whittlesey Cllr David Mason led the way by paying respect to the fallen by laying wreaths on behalf of His Honour Neil McKittrick, the Queen’s representative, and Whittlesey Town Council at Whittlesey, Coates and Eastrea.
Cllr Alex Miscandlon also laid wreaths in Whittlesey on behalf of Stephen Barclay MP and Fenland District Council while at Turves Cllr Bob Wicks represented the Mayor in laying a wreath. On Remembrance Day itself the Chairman of the Royal British Legion Pauline Edge flanked by two standard bearers laid a wreath on behalf of the Royal British Legion at an informal event at the War Memorial in Whittlesey. Community radio station Fenland Youth Radio produced a two-hour special ‘Whittlesey Remembers’ programme with dedications to, and from, the care homes in the town, culminating with a prerecorded Service of Remembrance which paid a fine tribute to those who had fought and died. Church Matters
WHITTLESEY CHRISTIAN CHURCH
THREE WORDS FROM OUR HEART: 'THANK YOU, WHITTLESEY' On behalf of WEFA, the Whittlesey Emergency Food Aid team (Joe and Sue Jennings, Pauline Tate, Marija, and myself) I would like to thank you for the amazing support you have shown throughout this extremely challenging year. Without you we could not have come this far. From the moment the first lockdown was introduced, Marija and I made the decision that we would keep the church open Monday to Friday for as long as humanly possible in order to serve the vulnerable and those experiencing difficulty providing food for their family. As you can imagine, the amount of people we needed to serve rose dramatically. As we look back over all that has happened, we have much to be thankful for. Many of you may already know that WEFA was created by those who know and faithfully serve this community in order to make it a place we can be proud of. WEFA is not part of a national chain but was specifically designed with our community in mind. To be something the community could freely support was, and still is, at at the heart of the project.

Throughout this challenging period… • Marija and I have been strengthened and encouraged by God and your amazing support. These nine months without a break have taken a physical toll on both of us, but your words of encouragement and support have been a huge source of blessing. Thank you. • WEFA has always had adequate supplies to meet every request for help. • WEFA continues to enjoy the support of the churches, schools, businesses, groups, and the individuals from within the community. To all who help in whatever way, we say a huge thank you for helping us make Whittlesey a place where no one needs go hungry or without a place to find help. GET READY FOR NEXT YEAR’S GARDENING DUTIES Gardeners are being urged to sign-up for Fenland District Council’s garden waste service. More than 22,500 residents across the district are now benefitting from the clean and costeffective way to dispose of their garden waste, with easy, fortnightly brown bin collections throughout the year.
VOLUNTEERS BRING PRIDE BACK TO PLOUGH GARDEN Whittlesey Street Pride volunteers have transformed Plough Garden in Plough Road which had seen better days with the rotten wood surrounds making it look a sorry state. A successful bid for funds from Whittlesey Town Council enabled it to be renovated with ecofriendly recycled plastic surrounds. After much backbreaking work, surplus earth was removed and the new surround built and secured around the area. It took in total five Whittlesey Street Pride volunteers six hours to transform it into that which is seen today. Everything was performed under strict COVID-19 conditions, hence there were only five people involved. Whittlesey Street Pride members, who have thanked Whittlesey Town Council and David Palmer, Dick Green, Chris Nicholas, Peter Davies, and Alan Hobbs, hope to resume litter picking and plan to publish dates, times, and locations soon.
New direct debit subscriptions for the 2021/22 service were due to go on sale on December 1st, 2020, with card and cash payment subscriptions going live on January 4th, 2021. Existing direct debit customers will have their subscriptions automatically renewed in February 2021, ready for the garden waste service to start in April 2021. The £40 annual fee first introduced in 2017/18 is set to increase to £45, which the council says remains one of the lowest priced authority garden waste services in the East of England. However, the discount offered to all new and existing customers paying for the fortnightly service by direct debit has been increased from ten to more than fifteen percent making the direct debit cost just £38 for the coming season. For more information on the garden waste service and to sign up, visit www.fenland. gov.uk/gardenwaste or call 01354 654321.
FREE NHS COUNSELLING SESSIONS Free NHS counselling is available now for issues including anxiety, depression, stress, bereavement, self-harm, relationship issues and many more. Weekly sessions will be held online via Zoom or via telephone. You can self-refer direct by calling 01733 767279. 30

POPPY BLITZ MAKES A MEMORABLE SIGHT With Remembrance Day parades cancelled, it was important for Whittlesey to show its respect for those who lost their lives fighting for our country. The Whittlesey Poppy Blitz took almost seven months to complete. More than 120 people helped create 10,000+ poppies and thousands of hours work resulted in a magnificent display. Children in pre-school, local groups, crafters, and pensioners in care homes all contributed, some with just a few poppies, with others taking on daily tasks. Poppies were made out of wool, plastic, wood and felt. The good work was shown on social media and reached 43,000 people with more than five hundred shares, and it was also highlighted by ITV. Sue Kitchin said: “At a time when we have spent months trying to stay in touch but through a safe distance, the sight of 10,000 colourful and unique poppies connecting Whittlesey’s past and present community has been both welcome and spectacular. “I have nothing but admiration for those whose creativity, resilience and collaboration have produced such a poignant display, dedicated to those who gave up their own lives and opportunities so that we could have ours. Thank you to everyone who has made it possible for us to show our respect and walk amongst the Whittlesey Poppy Blitz in 2020.”
HELP TO STAY SAFE Fenland District Council is continuing to work with local businesses to help them keep their premises, staff and customers safe amid the ongoing coronavirus challenges. The authority’s environmental health team has been on hand throughout the pandemic to help businesses follow COVID-19 guidance, helping protect local people and giving the public muchneeded peace of mind when out and about. Businesses can now be fined up to £10,000 for failing to abide to the Government’s coronavirus regulations, while fines for individuals breaking the ‘rule of six’ or failing to wear a face mask have been doubled to £200 for the first offence. Any businesses which need advice and support can contact the team on (01354) 654321 or via email at: envhealth@fenland.co.uk

DECEMBER
GARDENING TIPS
T
he long-range weather forecast, at the moment, predicts a fairly settled and mild December. So, winter digging could continue late into the month, which also helps to expose hibernating grubs which the birds can then eat. Then cover the plot to prevent weed growth, minerals being leached out by rain, and to keep the soil warm, which helps with early planting in the spring. For those days that are too wet or cold to go outside, you could do the following: •
Consider what grew well this year and what you might plant next year: how about being a bit adventurous and trying something a bit out of the ordinary for a change? Here are some different vegetables you might like to try: celeriac, daikon radish (a huge radish that you can use in salads or stir fries), snake gourds, heritage crops such as purple carrots, rainbow sweetcorn and blue French climbing beans.
•
Clean and sharpen your garden tools, and clean seed trays, pots and other equipment to prevent any diseases carrying over to infect next year’s seedlings. Also give the shed a good tidy out and clean.
There are very few crops that you can plant; however, if you have not planted them yet, you can plant garlic and onion seeds (which should be sown in trays or 32
D I S C O V E R I N G
Whittlesea
pots in a gentle heat towards the end of the year). New crowns of rhubarb can be planted, or existing ones divided and replanted; bare-root fruit trees and bushes, raspberry and blackberry canes can also still be planted. Other jobs to do this month are: • Continue topping up compost and leaf mould bins, making sure that you burn or discard any plant material that looks diseased. • Manure the vegetable plot, using well-rotted manure, no need to dig in. •
Earth up Brussels sprouts stems to keep them secure from strong winds and remove any brown or yellow leaves; this will prevent the spread of grey mould.
• Make sure your winter brassicas are netted to prevent pigeons eating them and check for and repair any holes. • Keep picking leeks and parsnips but if the weather is very wet check that the leeks are not getting waterlogged and rotting. •
December is the ideal time to prune apples and pears, gooseberries and currants. Autumn raspberries can be pruned right back to ground level between now and February.
Well, the end of a strange year! Let’s hope that 2021 sees an improvement in our situation, but before then, enjoy some of the fruits of your labour on your Christmas dinner plate. A very Happy Christmas and a healthy and fruitful New Year to you all!

Make sure you stay savvy, not sorry, when it comes to online Christmas shopping by Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades It will come as no surprise that an increase in online shopping in 2020 has also meant a rise in scams. Interestingly, four in five online shopping fraud victims were under the age of fifty, with those in their twenties being the most likely to be victim of online shopping fraud. So while ‘tis the season of Christmas shopping, the fraudsters will be looking to make mischief and bring misery to millions. However, there are some wise words from Action Fraud when it comes to staying safe. Choose where you shop: Carry out your own research if you are buying something from a company or person you don’t know or trust. If purchasing, use a credit card if you have one, as most major credit card providers insure online purchases. Keep your devices up to date: Install the latest software and app updates. These usually contain important security updates that can protect you against fraud and identity theft. Just turn on automatic updates so your device will update itself in future. Secure your email account: A strong password is the first defence against cyber criminals trying to hack into your email account. They will use things like your address or date of birth when trying to crack your passwords. Take care with links in emails and texts: If the offer looks ‘too good to be true’, then it probably is. Links may come from fake websites, designed to steal your money and personal details. If you are unsure don't use the link – go separately to the website. Turn on two-factor authentication (2FA): To give any online account additional protection, where possible, you should turn on two-factor authentication (2FA). Then the service you are using can double check that you really are the person you claim to be.

Impact Of USA Election On Finances by Eamonn Dorling
their objectives, but centralised funding may become something the UK should embrace. This brings me to my point: Government spending to recover from COVID and the need to change direction in terms of commerce and industry will be divided between COVID recovery and publicly speaking up for individuals which is potentially a more political issue – the result will be greater debt that will need to be repaid.
At the time of writing it has become apparent who the next President of the USA will be after a cost that is reputed to be about $13 Billion – and that was during a pandemic! Much of the speculation had been ‘built in’ to the international investment markets where a drop in value prior to the election was followed by an increase that brought many markets back to the positions being held about a month earlier. More important than a short term ‘fluctuation’ is the medium to long term outlook. It is well documented that Mr Biden was against Brexit and there is a risk (no matter how big or small that might be) that a trade agreement with USA will not be frictionless, especially where agriculture is concerned. It is also apparent that the UK will need to explore how far away from the curve we are in terms of new technology (for example, 5G telephony, battery technology and new industrial processes). It is becoming clear that ‘green spending’ and the UK desire to be carbon neutral by 2050 will be an area that collaboration could exist in. The funding of their Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) may differ in terms of
Seldom has there been a more important time to take informed advice when investing for your personal future than now. The use of investments that traditionally reacted in predictable ways has changed. We might get a more traditional communication with the USA but if there is pressure to move away from G7 to a democratically based D10 the UK position could be stronger, for sure the influence of the UK globally will reduce unless we change. That is all very heavy stuff, but these are changing times, and Brexit is only a few weeks away – normally the deal making takes place close to the end, we will see. PACKAGE OF SUPPORT FOR LOCAL GROUPS – By Steve Barclay MP
T
he current period of national lockdown is a difficult time for all. I know many will be worried about the effect it will have on jobs, businesses and the economy, mental health and people’s wellbeing, and the simple practicalities of access to food and assistance for those who are self-isolating.
The Government has put in place a package of support, and district councils together with local community organisations and volunteers are doing an amazing job. It is also good to see that Fenland is getting its share of some of the Government support for heritage and the wider cultural sector. The Angles Theatre was awarded £128,000 arts funding and St Giles Church in Tydd St Giles has been given a £18,680 grant from the Culture Recovery Fund. I know both of these are much valued by the community and I hope the funds will go some way toward combatting the current challenges. COVID-19 also plays a role in the delay to the reopening of the Doddington Minor Injury Unit due to the wider pressure on staff during the pandemic. I am assured that Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Clinical Commissioning Group is working hard to find a solution but the safety of both staff and patients is paramount.
The Ely MIU has remained open throughout and it was good to see the Wisbech MIU re-open in August. It’s great to see March Bears Rugby Club chairman Edwin Fey is through to the Living Sport shortlist for the Community Volunteer of the Year, and the club itself is short listed for Community Club of the Year. My dad coached junior rugby on Sunday mornings for thirty-nine years, so I grew up around a rugby club and know how much work is involved by volunteers, so it’s great to see the local work at March Bears being recognised. The winners will be announced on December 3rd – we'll keep our fingers crossed. The highest award a voluntary group can receive in the UK has been presented to March Amateur Boxing Club. Volunteers have dedicated their time and energy to the club for fifty years so recognition was richly deserved. Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire Julie Spence presented the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service to the club which boasts 250 members and it is an achievement the whole community can be proud of. Further information about the pandemic is available here: www.gov.uk/coronavirus; www.fenland.gov.uk/coronavirus. Please also remember I am here to help, together with my parliamentary office, so do get in touch via email or phone if we can be of assistance. Above all, please keep yourselves and your families safe.
