Birpai Dhoongang Mural, Bain Park, Wauchope
Acknowledgement of Country We acknowledge the Birpai people, the traditional owners of the land in which we work and live, and pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging. We extend our respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who choose to call this region home.
For more than 40,000 years the Birpai people have been the original inhabitants and occupants of this region. Relying on the land and waterways to sustain themselves, the Birpai people made temporary huts along the river allowing them to follow the seasonal food trail. The region’s richly diverse landscapes together with the subtropical climate ensured that the community thrived in harmony with the environment for many thousands of years prior to European settlement. In 1818, Surveyor-General John Oxley brought the region to the attention of NSW Governor Lachlan Macquarie (and subsequently named it Port Macquarie). In 1821 a penal settlement was established for convicts to serve time for ‘secondary offences’. The town was built by those convicts and overseen by military officers of the 48th Regiment. It was opened up to free settlers from 1830 with some convicts remaining until 1847. Early European settlement was, by many accounts, a brutal time for convicts, however it was particularly devastating for the Birpai, who suffered attacks from settlers, exposure to new diseases, loss of their land and disruption to their traditional way of life. Today, Aboriginal culture strengthens and enriches our community. People who occupy this area are from many different lands and share the values of tolerance and respect of one another. Port Macquarie has evolved, and is now one of the most popular tourist destinations and fastest growing regions in NSW.

P O RT M ACQ UA R I E Prepare to fall in love with Port! Sitting pretty on a unique stretch of coastline, the CBD enjoys views to the mighty Hastings River on one side, and the Pacific Ocean on the other. Plus, it’s compact and level, making it ideal for walking. With a population of 55,000 (and growing), it’s big enough to provide all that you need, and small enough to make it easy. From fish & chips by the beach to fine dining with a water view, our buzzing food and bar scene will take you from sandy feet to stilettos! Port also attracts many events and festivals throughout the year (see pages 22-23), and is a great base from which to explore the region, with a huge range of accommodation.
Macquarie Fishing Charters, and around the corner (at the northern end of Short Street) Port Jet Cruise Adventures.
Port’s Coastal Walk & Beaches
The Breakwall, Skate Park & Town Beach Reserve
Consistently voted as our #1 rated attraction, our Coastal Walk is really something special. Covering nine kilometers of riverside promenade, pathways, sandy trails, numerous pristine beaches, hidden coves and headlands, you can take a half-day and do the lot or choose a smaller section. There are cafes along the way for sustenance and some great swimming spots as well! See page 32 for our Beach Guide, and 69 for our Coastal Walk map.
Town Wharf
Wander down the western end of Clarence Street and you’ll find a long stretch of renewed, accessible commercial wharf area perfect for fishing, watching the boats, or booking a charter or tour from one of the river and sea-going operators. This is where you’ll find Cruise Port Macquarie (River cruises), Port
Town Green & Lady Nelson Wharf
An expansive, beautifully landscaped area overlooking Lady Nelson Wharf and the river, flanked by bars and eateries. It’s the heart of the CBD and enjoyed by all. Walk, bike, fish, picnic or people-watch! Grab an ice cream and take a stroll, or enjoy a cocktail by the water. Kids will love the new playground next to the giant fig tree (and parents will love the overlooking café). Leashed dogs are welcome, and it’s a popular place for gatherings and events.
Loved by locals and visitors alike, the iconic breakwall is an outdoor art gallery as well as a great waterside stroll. Head to Town Beach reserve which hosts one of the coast’s best skate parks, along with parklands, a playground, scooter track and kiosk. All overlooking the river on one side and stunning patrolled Town Beach on the other.
Westport Park, The Marina & Settlement Point
Head west across the pedestrian bridge from the CBD for a few minutes, and you’ll come to Westport Park (home to many major events and a boat ramp), as well as the Marina and Settlement Point Shopping Centre. A short drive (or longer walk/ride) will bring you to Settlement Point, a pretty area of parkland where you can swim, SUP or kayak. Popular with families and fishos, it has picnic and bbq facilities and amenities. You can also take the car ferry across to ‘The North Shore’ from here, a quiet residential area which also has access to popular surfing and camping spots heading north to Crescent Head. Some roads are 4WD access only.
Sea Acres & Tacking Point Lighthouse
Take the ten-minute drive south along Pacific Drive and enjoy the coastal views as you head out to heritage-listed Tacking Point Lighthouse. Still a working lighthouse today, it’s an unmissable lookout and a great whale-watching spot during the season. Along this route you’ll find the popular Sea Acres Rainforest Centre and Boardwalk, a magical 1.3km accessible journey through ancient rainforest, starting and ending with the delightful Rainforest education centre, shop and café.
'Home at Roto House' Cafe
Gaol Point
A spectacular viewpoint on the headland overlooking Town Beach and the river mouth, it used to be the location of a nineteenth century gaol (hence the name)! It has parking, seating and interpretive signage. It’s great for checking the surf, enjoying the views, or taking a wander through the pretty pathways and views through the adjacent Mrs York’s gardens. 11

Wauchope
(Pronounced war-hope) - 15 minutes west of Port Macquarie. Surrounded by Australia’s most extensive Blackbutt forest, it was here in the mid 1800s that pioneers made the town famous as a timber town. Today, Wauchope, is a thriving and friendly country town, with a reputation for great shopping, cafes, bakeries, and the Timber Town Heritage Theme Park. It's also an RV Friendly town, and the first Motor Cycle Friendly Town in NSW.

To the west of Port Macquarie is true paradise, with farmland rolling hills and lush rainforest. The Hinterland is popular with bush walkers, fourwheel drive enthusiasts or those just keen to explore. Take time to discover this region with a day trip or two. Perhaps stay overnight in one of the many cottages or B&Bs scattered along the way. See page 30 for more ideas.
Comboyne
Head up the plateau to the charming tiny village of Comboyne, where you can shop for art and crafts for the home and produce for the pantry. A tranquil place of rolling green pastures, forests, streams and waterfalls located about a 1 hour drive from Port Macquarie. Here you’ll find the Boorganna Nature Reserve, a large remnant of the forest that once covered the whole plateau. There is a fantastic 2.7km walking track that starts at the picnic area where you can see many different bird species and lush rainforest plants. Drive a further 25kms to visit Ellenborough Falls in the Manning Valley - a truly amazing sight as water plunges into a gorge 200m below. There is a viewing platform and a timber walkway for those who would like to walk to the bottom of the falls. Whilst the road is mostly unsealed, it's 2WD friendly. (allow around 45 minutes for the drive from Comboyne). There is a Kiosk and picnic facilities.

Lorne, Kendall and Kew
Whilst part of the Camden Haven, these three small towns also form part of the Hinterland. Kendall ‘The Poets Village’ - is a quiet village with a population of 250 people located just off the Pacific Highway, at Kew. Its vibrancy, diversity and charm fuel Kendall’s community spirit. Named after the Australian poet Henry Kendall, it is a growing community, with craft and antique stores as well as numerous other tourist attractions. Kew has now been bypassed by the highway, and this pretty rural hamlet has found its groove! The recently restored heritage hotel, 'The Royal' is a must visit, as is their famous Golf Course and friendly General Store.

The mountain supports a wide range of vegetation communities, including some of the best examples of old growth blackbutt forest in NSW and pockets of sub-tropical rainforest that provide habitat for gliders, bats and koalas.
Pilot Beach
A fantastic and secluded beach for the kids, as it is naturally protected. It also has excellent BBQ facilities and a playground area with showers to rinse off.
Crowdy Bay National Park
Take the road from Laurieton and head south and you will enter the northern section of Crowdy Bay National Park. Diamond Head is striking. It rises 113 metres and is edged by the wetlands and heathlands of the coastal plain. The park is ideal for camping, bushwalking, birdwatching, fishing (from the rock platforms you can catch groper, bream, tailor and drummer) and swimming. See page 31 for more Camden Haven highlights.
Sovereign Hills & Thrumster
Head 10 minutes west from the Port Macquarie CBD towards the freeway interchange and you'll find new home displays and the delightful shopping village of Sovereign Place Town Centre, with great food, shopping and services. See maps page 78.

DAY 6
Billabong Zoo Koala & Wildlife Park
IS THIS THE ULTIMATE FAMILY ITINERARY? Our mission: To fill a week-long break with enough to keep 3 kids under 13 happy, but it must be stuff that we all enjoy. Oh, and bonus points if it stops the kids from arguing. It’s a tall order. How did we go? Read on to find out! DAY 1
We booked the kids in for one of Billabong Zoo’s school holiday activities – ‘Zookeeper for a Day’. This wildlife sanctuary is awesome. Really well laid out with over 80 different species, and we dropped the kids off with the Zookeepers for the WHOLE DAY! This meant we could take a hinterland drive and have lunch on the deck at the divine Byabarra Cafe. Bliss! The kids had an absolute ball and have morphed into mini-Wildlife Warriors.
DAY 2
We pre-booked a Port Jet Cruise Adventure and jumped on the supercharged ‘Wave-Rider’ at Town Wharf which had us zooming around and laughing/screaming at the top of our lungs! AND we saw a mumma whale and her calf splashing about! Ahhhmazing. In the afternoon we visited Port's worldrenowned Koala Hospital. We watched a Koala being treated in the clinic through the large viewing window, then we wandered around the rehabilitation yards learning all about these iconic Aussie floof-balls. The kids loved spending their pocket money at the cute gift shop (all profits go towards the Hospital).
DAY 3
Today it’s surfing lessons with Port Macquarie Surf School at Flynns Beach (local instructor was awesome and I think the kids/groms are hooked), followed by Port Macquarie Camel Safaris at Lighthouse Beach (I stayed on the sand with the youngest, but the rest of the fam loved it). We swung by the heritage Tacking Point Lighthouse on the way back for great views.
DAY 4
Wildnets Treetops Adventure Park is an absolute blast and had us all bouncing through the treetops and playing games. Bonus - it’s a great workout! Plus the 'Big Koala' (part of the Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail) is also on site, so we got plenty of selfies. We then trekked north to Ricardoes Tomatoes & Strawberries Farm, where we picked our own strawberries (all undercover) and indulged in the ‘world's best scones’ with Ricardoes strawberry jam. Yum.
Bago Maze & Wine today. Love a Winery that caters for kids as well! While the kids were working their way through one of the world’s largest hedge mazes, we worked our way through a tasting paddle of wines, and a cheese platter. We set up under a large tree on a hill overlooking the maze and could see (and hear) the kids giggling away.
DAY 7
Stoney Park - The Southern Hemisphere’s biggest inflatable water park - is just a short drive north of Port Mac. With the inflatables in a safe man-made lake (fully supervised), this place was an absolute hit. We fit in a bit of aqua golf, also on site. Everyone had a great time. Bonus - Kids went to bed early without a fuss!
DAY 8
Sea Acres Rainforest Centre has a cafe, gift shop and 1.3 km timber boardwalk through coastal rainforest. You can also book tours with an Aboriginal Ranger. It's a beautiful stroll through nature, and the kids were intent on spotting the different flora and fauna on their 'find and seek' guides.
MISSION POSSIBLE
Happy and exhausted kidlets, smugly satisfied parents*. This itinerary sounds busy but still allowed us ‘stop and flop’ time by the beach and pool with the occasional playground, skate park and gelato (ok, lots of gelato) thrown in. The best bit? Running around after the kids didn’t feel like a compromise- we had heaps of fun as well.
SIDE NOTE: Family-friendly food options were plentiful, and a few of our faves were: Home at Roto House (next to the Koala Hospital), Settlers Inn, Lily’s Cafe, Blue Cow Gelato, Town Green Buffet, East Port Bowling Club, Breakwall HQ, The Bowl, Sandbox at Flynns, Salty Crew Kiosk and the Rainforest Cafe.
DAY 5
We took an easy 15-minute drive west to Wauchope, to visit Timbertown Heritage Theme Park. There are no adrenaline rides or showbags here, just a charming ye *Alas, dear reader, our parental smugness only lasted until Day 9 (home time), when arguments and device usage kicked off again. It was great while it lasted. We’ll see you again soon, Port Mac!

WAUCHOPE
COMBOYNE & ELLENBOROUGH FALLS
HINTERLAND COUNTRY PUB CRAWL
(40km round trip from Port Macquarie)
(120km round trip from Port Macquarie)
(100km round trip from Port Macquarie)
Head west of the freeway along the Oxley Highway and within 10 minutes you’ll arrive in the lovely rural township of Wauchope. Home to cafes, boutiques, Timbertown Heritage Theme Park and several destination-worthy bakeries (the cruffins from Baked Culture are next-level), you can pick up a delicious bite to eat then work it off with a stroll along the riverfront. If you’re feeling more energetic, book in for an adventure with Hastings River Horse Riding. On the way to or from Wauchope, stop in at Guulabaa (Place of the Koala), Abundance Nursery (which has a lovely lakeside cafe), Billabong Zoo, or Cassegrain Wines. On the fourth Saturday of each month, The Wauchope Farmers Markets are held at the Showgrounds (8am-1pm). Pick up the freshest produce and artisan goods, and meet the local farmers and makers.
Head west from Wauchope on the Oxley Highway then take the left-hand fork onto Comboyne Road. You’ll come to the Byabarra Cafe & Bar, with its storybook charm and fabulous food best enjoyed on the deck overlooking the valley. Continue along this road and climb up the plateau to get to the village of Comboyne, surrounded by rolling lush farmlands and National Parks. Visit Larrikin’s Lockup, the historic restored slab-timber gaol and garden centre with beautiful grounds fronting the Thone River. Learn about sustainable farming at Grazed & Grown and buy organic homemade ice cream, meat and produce direct from the farmer. Browse handmade goodies and antiques, or indulge in treats at the Udder Cow Cafe. From here you can head out to Rawson, Bridal & Ellenborough Falls (the tallest single-drop waterfall in NSW). Note that Ellenborough Falls are another 50km round trip from Comboyne, and some sections of road are unsealed.
Grab your mates or the family (and a designated driver) and do the loop of some legendary Aussie watering holes with friendly locals and cold beer. Start at the Beechwood Hotel, only five minutes out of Wauchope and winner of Wotif’s Country Pub of the Year. It’s even got a hitching rail for your horse (and you can organise to ride there with Hastings River Horse Riding). Beechwood Café & Bar is just up the road and has a great deck out the back. Then head west via the Oxley Highway to the Long Flat Pub, a true original ‘Travellers Rest’, packed with nostalgia and a great beer garden with views over the adjoining river flats (where you can camp, fish and swim).

Hastings River Horse Riding by Lindsay Moller
They say the road less travelled is often the most rewarding. Head south of Port to the Camden Haven for pristine coastline and waterways, or west to the Hastings Valley Hinterland for country hospitality. These drives can easily be done in an hour or so, but there’s so much to eat, see and do along the way, we recommend taking a day (or two) to soak up all the goodness!

From Port, head south on Ocean Drive for around 15 minutes. First stop is Lake Cathie (pronounced Lake ‘Cateye’), where you can paddle, swim or float around in the tranquil aquamarine waters of the lagoon, surf at the beach, then head to the nearby shopping centre and tavern for lunch. Next stop is Bonny Hills and a surfing favourite, Rainbow Beach (the northern end is doggo-friendly and the Surf Club has a lovely café with ocean views). It’s also home to the extensive trails of the Jolly Nose Mountain Bike Park. Also worthy of a side trip is majestic serenity of Queens Lake, which has places to walk, picnic and kayak. Onwards to North Haven, and there are plenty of spots for sustenance and a great cuppa. Popular Moo & Bean Café also does a fab cocktail or three. The walk out to the northern breakwall is lovely (take the side trip to Beach Break Café for ocean-front brekkie or lunch), and you can also hire a BBQ Boat or a tinnie from BJA Boat Hire at the North Haven Wharf.
Head south from North Haven across Stingray Bridge to Laurieton (stopping in at The Nook Café for wholesome treats), and wander through this lovely village. Browse for homewares, fashion, and even art supplies. Catch a movie at the artdeco cinema, grab a bite to eat at one of many eateries, or head to the Laurieton Seafood Co-op for the freshest fish and chips by the river. Just up the road you can savour freshly shucked oysters direct from the Farmer at Armstrong Oysters, then take the short drive up to the top of North Brother Mountain for the most incredible views on the Mid-North Coast. The popular Laurieton Riverwalk Markets are held on the third Sunday of the month. Continue to Dunbogan, stop in at the iconic whitewashed Dunbogan Boatshed for a cuppa and a treat (and don’t forget to feed the fish)! Then head to Perpendicular Point & Kattang Nature Reserve, which has great walks and whale watching viewpoints. Nearby, both Pilots & Washhouse Beaches are relatively calm, family favourites.
At the southern tip of the region is Crowdy Bay National Park and Diamond Head. This is a popular nature-lovers paradise, with great beaches, walks, wildlife, and unique rock formations. The campground is popular with visitors and kangaroos alike! The delightful hinterland villages of Kew and Kendall are a short drive away, and the Royal Hotel, Kew General Store, Squeaky Gate Farm Shop and Kew Visitor Information Centre are well worth the detour, along with the legendary treats at Miss Nellie’s Café, and the charming Kendall Craft Co-op. It’s an easy 30 minute drive up the freeway back to Port Macquarie from there, and you can stop in at Bago Maze & Wine or do the short loop walk to view the impressively giant Old Bottlebutt Tree on your way home!

For surfing, the best spots are Town, Flynns, Lighthouse, Rainbow and North Haven beaches. The Breakwall at Town Beach works best with swell from the south through to the north-east. The Middle has some powerful lefts and is for the experienced surfer only, while Flagstaff is the protected southern headland of Town Beach. At Flynns Beach, waves can be found with swells from the south to east with offshore north-west winds through to southeast winds. Lighthouse Beach has a protected northern corner that handles north to north-east swell. Further south, Cathie is an open beach, which can offer powerful waves with south to east swell. Rainbow Beach is a protected southern headland with a right point break and beach breaks. Grants Headland picks up the smallest of swells and is best in the north-east swell with west to northeast winds. North Haven (Grants Beach) offers beach breaks with the best waves south to east swell, and works best with west to south-east winds. The bar can hand out some large waves but tidal flow from the river affects the wave quality. (Surfing information from PMQ Surf School). If you are looking for calmer waters and a great place to take the little ones, there are couple of options to choose from - all of which require parent supervision. With its rocky outcrop, Shelly Beach creates a somewhat protected lagoon and is ideal for the littlies. Other good areas for kids include Settlement Point, Lake Cathie lagoon (when open to the ocean) and Pilot Beach in Dunbogan. Town Beach is also good with a long break and plenty of rock pools towards the point for the kids to explore. Beach fishing is very popular with locals and tourists alike. Flynns Beach is patrolled and very popular with families. Rocky Beach, Lighthouse Beach, Rainbow Beach and Grants Beach are all popular spots. If you want somewhere to get your 4WD dirty, try North Beach, Lighthouse Beach, Rainbow Beach, Grants Beach or Dunbogan Beach – all of which have a 4WD entrance. A licence is required for recreational fishing (service.nsw.gov.au) and you also require a permit to drive on the approved 4WD beaches. Check the Visitor Information on page 3 for info on Beach Driving Permits.

Visit the world famous Koala Conservation Hospital Port Macquarie! Did you know that this region has long been considered a koala ‘hot spot’, with one of the highest koala population densities in the country? Koalas are now endangered in NSW due to the impacts of urbanisation and climate change. These impacts mean our work to rescue, rehabilitate and release is more important than ever.
For over 50 years, the Koala Conservation Hospital has been rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing wild koalas. We were the very first hospital for koalas in the world! Our rescue teams are available 24 hours a day, and our wildlife veterinarians and volunteers provide treatment and care for koalas until they can be released. If they can’t be released, we provide a place of care and safety. Come and see what we do… You can take a self-guided tour of our koala yards, see our koalas being cared for and treated in the clinic, and learn about how to care for and
conserve wildlife. The whole family will love our interactive educational exhibit - the ‘Koalaseum’, and the Gift Shop! Larger groups can prebook a guided tour for a small fee.
visit us We’re open every day, from 8.30 to 4.00pm, except Christmas Day. As a charity, we operate on the currency of kindness. Unlike government-funded organisations, we rely solely on the generosity of our volunteers and supporters. The Stunned Mullet
46
discoverportmacquarie.com.au
WHY THIS AWARDWINNING FINE DINER IS NEXT-LEVEL FABULOUS From the moment you walk in the door, it’s easy to see why The Stunned Mullet Restaurant is the most awarded fine diner on the Mid-North Coast. The waitstaff are welcoming and professional, the ambience is relaxed, and the views over Town Beach are sublime. A mix of scandistyle furnishings and timbers compliment the shelves of fine wines along walls lined with comfortable banquette seating. Soft furnishings make for better acoustics, meaning we can actually hear our conversation! Hooray! Full marks so far…
Behind the scenes, the experienced team are known for their innovation and paddock/sea to plate ethos. Then the menu arrives, and oh my…it reads like something out of a fairytale. Combinations previously unknown to me, now utterly compelling. Like the hiramasa kingfish, pecan puree, sage, date + olive relish, with charred cauliflower. Or the stand-out hit that they are renowned for- the Glacier 51 Toothfish, shitake suimono, savoy cabbage, black rice wafer, daikon, and
enoki crisp! Carnivores and vegetarians are well catered for, with the freshest produce sourced from the abundant Hastings Valley in the Port Macquarie hinterland. In the meantime, our lovely waiter is friendly and knowledgeable. Would we like some matching wine suggestions? Yes we would! It’s been a while since I’ve seen a wine list this extensive and expertly curated. It’s clear that the restaurant owner, Lou Perri, is passionate about his wine. He wanders the floor, happily chatting with patrons about wine, travel and provenance. We’re eager to try the recommended drop and it does not disappoint. My palate is positively singing now, and although I’m getting rather full, it would be rude not to look at the desert menu. Resistance is futile! The salty crème caramel, yuzu, rum jelly, brown butter, black sesame, and caramel cream is heavenly. My companion has the cheese platter and is thoroughly impressed. A selection of dessert wines rounds things off perfectly. We roll out of there feeling happily indulged and a little giddy by the whole experience, vowing to return (is tomorrow night too soon)?! The Stunned Mullet has held a Good Food Guide (National Edition) Chefs Hat for a decade, a Trip Advisor Best of the Best rating since 2020 – as well receiving Gourmet Traveller Wine List of the Year’s highest rating of 3 Glasses each year since 2018.

PORT MAC AFTER DARK
COCKTAIL ALCHEMY
Shaking their money makers, the folk behind the bar at Zebu, Little Shack, Hello Sailor, Stick Bar, Jimmy’s Bar, The Bowl, Beach House, Boathouse Bar, and Bar Florian are serving up the goods. Beera, Bar Capones & Birdrock Steakhouse | Bar are the newest kids on the block. Expect fresh takes on classics and good times.
Venture out after dark and you’ll discover Port Mac by moonlight has a buzzing bar scene with lots of new places to check out. Having tried and tested a bunch of watering holes and live music venues, we’ve done the hard yards to bring you the low-down (someone had to do it, and you’re welcome). Here are our TOP PICKS FOR: SUNDOWNERS OVERLOOKING THE WATER
Wander down to Town Green at twilight and you’ll find Little Shack’s cocktail bar shaking things up under fringed umbrellas, or nab a front row spot at classy Zebu overlooking the river. Across the green, you’ll find the iconic Beach House and the lively Chop n’ Chill. Follow the coastal walk west along the river to Florence Jones Cheese & Wine, overlooking Town Wharf. Across the bridge at the Marina, you can work your way through Hello Sailor’s extensive margarita menu overlooking the boats. A little further along is Sails, a luxe resort where you can kick back in (Hamptons) style on the expansive deck at the Boathouse Bar & Restaurant. If you really want to get an ‘overwater’ experience, book a sunset river cruise with Cruise Port Macquarie. Their large double-decker vessel is fully licensed!
LIVE MUSIC & DJs
All the groovy young things (and the ‘young-at-heart’ category) are loving Little Shack, Finnians Irish Tavern, Hello Sailor, Bar Capones, The Bowl, and Altitude Nightclub. If you prefer to kick back and listen to some low-key live tunes, head to Chop n Chill, Moorebeer Brewing Co. or Black Duck Brewery. If you’re after ticketed and/or bigger name acts, check out what’s on at the Glasshouse, Panthers, and Laurieton United Services Club.
LOCAL BREWERS & DISTILLERS
Head to award winning breweries, Moorebeer Brewing Co. and Black Duck Brewery, for live music and tasty craft bevvies (both in the Lake Road Industrial Estate). Around the corner you’ll find the new Port Macquarie Distillery, serving up flights of triple-distilled local gin goodness, plus cocktails and nibbles in style.

You could try a shared pathway, such as the reasonably-level path and promenade between Westport Park and Town Beach, or head south and try the North Haven Breakwall around to Laurieton along the Camden Haven riverfront. If you like riding on bush trails, try the Googik Heritage Track. Set in a pristine natural environment, the 2km walk starts at Lake Innes Nature Reserve on Lake Road and extends south all the way to St. Columba Anglican School. Perfect for all ages and abilities. 68

Boorganna Nature Reserve
Located within the Sea Acres National Park and set amongst rare subtropical rainforest, this NSW National Parks Information Centre offers visitors inspiring nature based and cultural experiences along a 1.3 km elevated wheelchair and stroller friendly boardwalk. Sea Acres also offers a beautiful range of unique sustainable gifts, toys and books. Complete your visit with a delicious lunch, morning or afternoon tea while relaxing on the deck of the Rainforest Café. 5km south of the CBD, or a short diversion from the coastal walk, the centre is open 9am to 4.30pm 7 days. Visit ww.nationalparks. nsw.gov.au Map ref P15
A significant remnant of the extensive rainforest that once covered the Comboyne Plateau, the reserve protects 396 hectares of diverse vegetation ranging from Eucalypt forest to subtropical rainforest. Stroll the 2.7km walk that starts at the picnic area and descends through the tranquil rainforest to Rawson Falls. The return trip (uphill) takes about 2 hours at a steady pace. Bring your bird book, as the reserve is very popular for bird watching (best observed during the early hours of the day). Map page 78
Kooloonbung Creek Nature Park & Historic Cemetery
Overlooking Queens Lake and Camden Haven, the viewing platforms at the summit offer the most breathtaking views and are a must to visit. There is an easy 30 minute walk through lush rainforest, or try the Top Track which is a moderate 1 hour walk. You can return to the summit or continue on the Laurieton Track, which is a demanding 2 hour walk. Make sure to have a vehicle waiting at the other end. Map page 78
Just a short walk from the heart of town, you’ll find this delightful 52 hectare nature reserve with walking tracks and boardwalks. It’s also home to a large flying fox colony. There are picnic tables, toilet facilities and a large sculpture of a Water Dragon for young and old to enjoy. The Historic Cemetery adjacent has graves of notable early settlers of the area. You can access the Reserve on foot from the CBD via the Kooloonbung Creek Foreshore between Gordon and Hayward Streets.
Mount Boss State Forest
Located only a short drive from Wauchope, Mount Boss State Forest is a favourite of our locals. Cobrabald visitor areas offer two separate camping areas; Wild Bull which has BBQ facilities, picnic shelter and a deep, cool waterhole, and the Bluff Picnic Area further down river which has interesting rock formations, swimming holes and a quiet, secluded spot perfect for small groups or couples. Map page 78
Burrawan State Forest
Located just 10 kilometres south of Wauchope you will find the world’s largest Red Bloodwood tree! Tourism award-winning ‘Old Bottlebutt’ is unique in shape with its flared ‘butt’ with a girth of more than 16 metres. At 51 metres high and over 200 years old, this magnificent tree is the main feature on a beautiful 600 metre loop walking track that starts and ends at the Burrawan picnic area. Map page 78
Dooragan National Park on North Brother Mountain
Kattang Nature Reserve
Accessed through Laurieton and across the Dunbogan bridge, the main feature is the majestic Perpendicular Point with its spectacular vertical cliffs plummeting 40 metres to the sea below. The reserve is surrounded by rock platforms, with the Camden River estuary to the north. The Flower Bowl Circuit (2km) is an easy walk with stunning coastal views or try the Perpendicular Point Walk (3.6km return) with panoramic views. Map page 78
Crowdy Bay National Park
Heading south through Camden Haven and past the Dunbogan turn off, you’ll find Crowdy Bay’s long sweeping beaches, dramatic headland, extensive wetlands, rainforest pockets and untouched coastal land featuring beautiful wildflower displays. There are three camping areas around Diamond Head and several day use areas along the coast. Map page 78

Putting your best foot forward - a definite ‘must do’ activity when in Port Macquarie is the Coastal Walk - a 9km easy-grade walk that follows one of the most dramatic and inspiring coastlines in NSW. This walk features beaches, headlands, historic sites, rainforests and fantastic views. Starting at Westport Park in town (page 80 map ref H8), all the way to Tacking Point Lighthouse, the walk takes approx 3.5 hours. The Coastal Walk hugs the coastline and features boardwalks, steps for easier access to the headlands, viewing platforms and picnic shelters. Opportunities abound for viewing dolphins plus there is a variety of birdlife and the annual whale migration from May to November. The Coastal Walk is the result of a partnership between Port MacquarieHastings Council and the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), with both organisations contributing infrastructure along the walk, and they've installed maps and signage on topics such as local history, whale watching and underwater ecology.

Camp Jordan
Diamond Waters Treehouse Retreat
6 OF THE BEST:
UNIQUE STAYS The Port Mac region has a huge selection of quality accommodation options from camping to luxury resorts. If you’re looking for something different (or for the ‘gram), we’ve rounded up (and tested) the following standouts: NATURE DOMES
Located in the rolling hinterland hills of Toms Creek, experience a getaway with a difference! Stay in a geo-design dome, with a large deck and outdoor tub overlooking the property. Go offgrid without the grit… these domes are luxurious! Wander among alpacas, miniature ponies, goats and chickens in this off-grid wonderland. There’s a farm shop on site for local goodies and they offer a range of beautiful hampers.
CAMPING AT THE LONG FLAT PUB
This much-loved heritage pub is on the Oxley Highway inland from Wauchope and is a popular stop with motorbike enthusiasts. The pub itself is full of character and nostalgia, and the pub meals are top-notch. The beer garden overlooks the valley and river flats below, where you can set up camp, kayak and fish. Or, if you’re bringing the kids, grab an old-school surf mat and float down the gentle rapids.
CAMP JORDAN
We’ve got more than our fair share of awesome holiday parks, and Camp Jordan is Port’s newest offering, on the Hastings River, offering retro caravans, airstream trailers, luxe shipping container conversions and glamping tents. Plus, it has Blackfish Cafe and boat, kayak and SUP hire.
TELEGRAPH RETREAT COTTAGES
Even though it’s only 5 mins off the highway, this sublime property feels a world away. The three substantial and well-appointed cottages have fireplaces, spas and large decks overlooking the paddocks. You can feed the goats, chickens, ducks and geese. Great for families, groups, and couples.
Nature Domes at Toms Creek
DIAMOND WATERS TREEHOUSE RETREAT
2023 Winner of 'Unique Accommodation' Category in the NSW Tourism Awards, these eco-certified, luxurious, handcrafted treehouses are nestled into the forest for maximum tranquillity. The timber boardwalk allows you to wander across the adjacent wetlands and enjoy the views over the water and across to the mountains. The divine ‘Fernery’ caters for small conferences, retreats and boutique weddings.
MANTRA OBSERVATORY
Located opposite Town Beach, you can book a luxury 3br penthouse (sleeps up to 6) with multiple balconies overlooking the ocean, with cafes and restaurants on your doorstep! Smaller apartments and hotel rooms also available.
This is just a sample of what’s on offer in our region! For heaps more places to stay, scan the QR or head to portmacquarieinfo.com.au/stay 70

ELISA’S HOT TIPS FOR BALANCING WORK AND PLAY IN PORT MAC:
Time to flex your work arrangements? If you can work from home, you can work from here… Ideally, you won’t have to work at all, BUT… if dabbling in a bit of work here and there means you can stay a little longer, we’ll allow it! Many of our holiday stays, town centres and libraries have free Wi-Fi, and most of our cafes and bars make for a comfortable ‘2nd office’ with good connectivity, great coffee and friendly service. Click on the QR below for info.
WORK-CATION PROFILE: ELISA Elisa and her family have been holidaying in Port for years. During COVID, she moved to hybrid working arrangements. It means she could start spending more time here, choosing to work and holiday with her hubby Mike (tradie business owner) and their two kids aged 12 & 15.

1. Start your mornings outside! The sunrises here are magic, especially along the Coastal Walk. 2. Have a bit of a plan for your day/week. Block out work time, and stick to it. 3. Pre-book activities to keep the kids happy. My kids love Wildnets, Stoney Aqua Park, Jollynose MTB Park, The Seed Creative Workshops and the Surf School. If I need to juggle kids and work, I’ll set up on Town Green, while the kids fish off the wharf or go for a skate. There’s also ice cream nearby so everyone’s winning! 4. Find a couple of locations where you like to work. My fave ‘2nd office’ locations are Zebu, Rivermark, Sails, Holy Goat Coffee, Peak Coffee, and Chop n Chill. 5. Meet the locals – I’ve met some great people through yoga and co-working, and Mike meets with the Sunrise Swimmers at Town Beach and Park Run (if he’s feeling really energetic). 6. Reward yourself! We’ve got a few ‘go-to’ places (the list is getting longer by the minute): Whalebone Wharf, Bills Fishhouse, Homeslice Pizza Bar, and Bar Florian never disappoint.
Whether you're here for a getaway, family vacation, or a solo adventure, Port Macquarie has you covered. Our range of accommodation includes hotels, motels, apartments, resorts, holiday parks and holiday houses. Many are in prime locations, offering breathtaking ocean views, and/or easy access to the beach, and close proximity to popular tourist attractions. Whatever your budget or occasion, you'll find the perfect place to stay.
