ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF COUNTRY

We acknowledge the Birpai people, the traditional owners of the land in which we work and live, and pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging. We extend our respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who choose to call this region home.

The Birpai people have been the original occupants and inhabitants of this region for over 40,000 years, living sustainably and following seasonal food sources, in a richly diverse and subtropical environment. In 1818, John Oxley explored and mapped the region and in 1821, one of Australia's earliest penal settlements was established (named after Governor Lachlan Macquarie). In 1828 the penal settlement was closed and by 1830 Port Macquarie was welcoming free settlers. The early European settlement period was harsh for convicts and particularly devastating for the Birpai, who faced attacks, diseases, loss of land, and disruption of their way of life at the hands of Europeans settlers. Today, the Aboriginal culture enriches the community in Port Macquarie, now a thriving, diverse, and popular tourist destination in New South Wales, built on values of tolerance and respect among its residents.

Wakulda: Weaving Our Stories as One is an immersive, sound, and light projection showcasing the history of Port Macquarie, from its traditional Birpai owners to present day, at the Port Macquarie Historic Courthouse on Clarence Street. The 10-minute show is free and runs nightly at 6:30pm in winter, 7:30pm during daylight savings in summer.

Sea Acres Rainforest Centre & Boardwalk A delightful, accessible 1.3km timber boardwalk takes you through ancient rainforest, and the Centre offers insights into local Aboriginal culture and bimonthly bush-tucker tours led by Aboriginal Rangers (bookings required). Located at 159 Pacific Drive, it's open daily from 9:00am to 4:30pm, with a shop and cafe on site. Phone: (02) 6582 3355.

Port Macquarie Museum, an award-winning facility, features themed displays from early settlers to the current era. It's located at 22 Clarence St, open Monday to Saturday, 10:00am-4:00pm, with admission fees. The building is heritage-listed. Phone: (02) 6583 1108.

Mid North Coast Maritime Museum, situated in the 1896 Pilot Cottages at 6 William Street, showcases maritime artifacts including scale models, charts, maps, paintings, and historical photos. It's open daily from 10:00am-4:00pm. Phone: (02) 6583 1866.

The Historic Courthouse, designed by James Barnet and built in 1869, is a National Trust-classified building restored in 1993. It's open Monday to Friday from 10am to 3pm and Saturday from 10:00am-1:00pm, located at the corner of Clarence & Hay Streets. Phone: (02) 6584 1818.

St Thomas’ Anglican Church, Australia’s fifth oldest church, was built by convict labor from 1824 to 1828 with walls made of one-meter-thick hand-made brick. It features a unique 1857 barrel organ. Open for history tours Tuesdays & Thursdays from 9:30am to 11.30pm, $5pp, at 50 Hay Street. Phone: (02) 6584 1033.

Historic Roto House, restored by the National Parks and Wildlife Service, showcases 19th-century furnishings and artifacts. It has the 'Home at Roto' café, which plays host to regular art exhibitions and music/poetry evenings, and is next door to the Koala Hospital. Cafe open daily at 2 Roto Place, 7:00am-3:00pm.

Douglas Vale Historic Homestead & Vineyard offers a glimpse into one of Australia’s original vineyards and a museum with items from its founding families. Features include historic buildings, an orchard, and a working vineyard. Volunteer run, with regular events. Open Wed, Sat + Sun from 10:00am-3:00pm. 235 Oxley Highway, just 2 minutes from Port's CBD.

OUR
REGION
Tacking Point Lighthouse by Michael Wilkie

PORT MACQUARIE

Prepare to fall in love with Port! Sitting pretty on a unique stretch of coastline, the CBD enjoys views to the mighty Hastings River on one side, and the Pacific Ocean on the other. Plus, it’s compact and level, making it ideal for walking. From fish & chips by the beach to fine dining with a water view, our food and bar scene is buzzing! Port also attracts many events and festivals throughout the year (see pages 3435), and is a great base from which to explore the region, with a huge range of accommodation.

Port’s Coastal Walk & Beaches

Consistently voted as our #1 rated attraction, our Coastal Walk is really something special. Covering nine kilometers of riverside promenade, pathways, sandy trails, numerous pristine beaches, hidden coves and headlands, you can take a half-day and do the lot or choose a smaller section. There are cafes along the way for sustenance and some great swimming spots as well! See page 32 for our Beach Guide, page 67 for our Coastal Walk map and page 51 for our 'Walk n Fork' guide.

Town Wharf

Wander down the western end of Clarence Street and you’ll find a long stretch of renewed, accessible commercial wharf area perfect for fishing, watching the boats, or booking a charter or tour from one of the river and sea-going operators. This is where you’ll find Cruise Port Macquarie (River cruises), Port Macquarie Fishing Charters, and around the corner (at the northern end of Short Street) Port Jet Cruise Adventures.

Town Green & Lady Nelson Wharf

An expansive, beautifully landscaped area overlooking Lady Nelson Wharf and the river, flanked by bars and eateries. It’s the heart of the CBD and enjoyed by all. Walk, bike, fish, picnic or people-watch! Grab an ice cream and take a stroll, or enjoy a cocktail by the water. Kids will love the new playground next to the giant fig tree (and parents will love the overlooking café). Leashed dogs are welcome, and it’s a popular place for gatherings and events.

The Breakwall, Skate Park & Town Beach Reserve

Loved by locals and visitors alike, the iconic breakwall is a great waterside stroll. Head to Town Beach reserve which hosts one of the coast’s best skate parks, along with parklands, a playground, scooter track and kiosk. All overlooking the river on one side and stunning patrolled Town Beach on the other.

Gaol Point

A spectacular viewpoint on the headland overlooking Town Beach and the river mouth, it used to be the location of a nineteenth century gaol (hence the name)! It has parking, seating and interpretive signage. It’s great for checking the surf, enjoying the views, or taking a wander through the pretty pathways and views through the adjacent Mrs York’s gardens.

The Glasshouse & Port Central

Taking a central CBD position on Clarence Street is the architecturally stunning Glasshouse, home to a 550-seat theatre, Visitor Information Centre & Shop, Function Centre and Regional Art Gallery (see back cover). Across a forecourt lined with cafes and shops is the entrance to Port Central Shopping Centre, which can also be accessed via Hay St and the multi-level car park off Murray Street. The CBD shopping/ dining precinct centres around Clarence, Hay, Murray, Horton and Short Streets, and all are worth a wander!

Westport Park, The Marina & Settlement Point

Head west across the bridge from the CBD for a few minutes, and you’ll come to Westport Park (home to many major events, a playground with water park and a boat ramp), as well as the Marina and Settlement Point Shopping Centre. A short drive (or longer walk/ride) will bring you to Settlement Point, a pretty area of parkland where you can swim, SUP or kayak. Popular with families and fishos, it has picnic and bbq facilities and amenities. You can also take the car ferry across to ‘The North Shore’ from here, a quiet residential area which also has access to popular surfing and camping spots heading north to Crescent Head. Some roads are 4WD access only.

Sea Acres & Tacking Point Lighthouse

Take the ten-minute drive south along Pacific Drive and enjoy the coastal views as you head out to heritagelisted Tacking Point Lighthouse. Still a working lighthouse today, it’s an unmissable lookout and a great whalewatching spot during the season. Along this route you’ll find the popular Sea Acres Rainforest Centre and Boardwalk, a magical 1.3km accessible journey through ancient rainforest, starting and ending with the delightful Rainforest education centre, shop and café.

Port Macquarie's position along the East Coast of Australia is perfect for experiencing the spectacle of over 30 thousand migrating whales each year.

View the whales from land!

The Coastal Walk in Port Macquarie, the Camden Haven viewpoints and all of the various vantage points along the way offer opportunities to view the whales without stepping foot on a boat.

The whale watching boats based out of Port Macquarie are already so close to the mouth of the ocean that you are likely to be only minutes away from the action. This means you spend more time with the whales rather than spending long periods traveling through a large harbour or estuary. It's just another advantage Port has over most other locations.

Each year between May and November, the Port Macquarie coastal region is a haven for whale watching. After a full summer of feeding in Antarctica, approximately 16,000 humpback whales migrate north to subtropical waters where they mate and give birth before making their return trip south. A great way to experience these magnificent creatures is on a whale watching cruise. Departing frequently during the season, these cruises will almost guarantee you an upfront and personal experience in a safe and comfortable environment.

PORT JET CRUISES

In big news for ocean lovers, Port Jet Cruises have added to their impressive lineup of vessels with a new purpose-built whale-watching boat, Ocean Rider, just in time for Whale Season! Years of oceangoing experience has gone into the development of the new vessel, which takes up to 24 passengers, and upsizes the power factor with 3 x 350hp Mercury V10 motors! Locally built for our conditions, by experts at Grove Marine Fabrications, Port Mac has never seen anything like OceanRider before! Both the Ocean

HUMPBACK WHALE FACTS

Humpback whales are the most acrobatic of all the great whales.

— A whale's tail or fluke is unique to each whale and is what is commonly used to identify an idividual whale, just like a human fingerprint.

A baby whale is called a calf and weighs nearly one tonne when born. They consume up to 600 litres of their mother's milk per day.

Rider and Wave Rider will have you surfing the waves and cruising up and down Port's remarkable coastline (or speeding along the Hastings River). They are equipped with state-of-theart tech and equipment. Your skilful and knowledgeable skipper will take you on an adventure exploring rugged coastlines, spotting playful dolphins, sea turtles and of course, don’t miss whale watching season from May to November. If speed isn't your thing then get on board their river boat and enjoy a scenic tour up the Hastings River. Relax and enjoy the comfortable and spacious two level catamaran ‘Essence’, complete with inside seating, underwater viewing windows, covered top deck and boom net. There is a style of ride to suit everyone, whether it be an exhilarating Ocean Blast, a River Cruise (afternoon, sunset or eco), or maybe a Dolphin Spotting Cruise is more your style. If you want to take control yourself then hire a Jet Ski and zoom around in the 9 hectare dedicated ski park. (See inside cover)

LOCAL BEACHES

For surfing, the best spots are Town, Flynns, Lighthouse, Rainbow and North Haven beaches. The Breakwall at Town Beach works best with swell from the south through to the north-east. The Middle has some powerful lefts and is for the experienced surfer only, while Flagstaff is the protected southern headland of Town Beach. At Flynns Beach, waves can be found with swells from the south to east with offshore north-west winds through to south-east winds. Lighthouse Beach has a protected northern corner that handles north to north-east swell. Further south, Cathie is an open beach, which can offer powerful waves with south to east swell. Rainbow Beach is a protected southern headland with a right point break and beach breaks. Grants Headland picks up the smallest of swells and is best in the north-east swell with west to northeast winds. North Haven (Grants Beach) offers beach breaks with the best waves south to east swell, and works best with west to south-east winds. The bar can hand out some large waves but tidal flow from the river affects the wave quality. (Surfing information from PMQ Surf School). If you are looking for calmer waters and a great place to take the little ones, there are couple of options to choose from - all of which require parent supervision. With its rocky outcrop, Shelly Beach creates a somewhat protected lagoon and is ideal for the littlies. Other good areas for kids include Settlement Point, Lake Cathie lagoon (when open to the ocean) and Pilot Beach in Dunbogan. Town Beach is also good with a long break and plenty of rock pools towards the point for the kids to explore. Beach fishing is very popular with locals and tourists alike.

*Patrolled by Australian Lifeguards year-round at Town Beach only. Refer to the table above for other patrolled beaches, serviced in School Holidays only (excluding Winter). At other times volunteer life savers are on duty only when the red and yellow flags are displayed. For more information on beach safety please go to www.beachsafe.org.au

Flynns Beach is patrolled and very popular with families. Rocky Beach, Lighthouse Beach, Rainbow Beach and Grants Beach are all popular spots. If you want somewhere to get your 4WD dirty, try North Beach, Lighthouse Beach, Rainbow Beach, Grants Beach or Dunbogan Beach – all of which have a 4WD entrance. A licence is required for recreational fishing (service. nsw.gov.au) and you also require a permit to drive on the approved 4WD beaches. Check the Visitor Information on page 3 for info on Beach Driving Permits.

THE WORLD-FAMOUS KOALA CONSERVATION HOSPITAL

For over 50 years, Wildlife Veterinarians and volunteers at the Koala Conservation Hospital Port Macquarie have been rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing wild koalas, with specially trained Rescue teams available 24 hours a day.

VISIT THE RESIDENT KOALAS

You can meet the resident koalas, and watch them being fed, cared for, and treated in the clinic. There are bookable group tours, selfguided tours and informative volunteer guides available throughout the day. The whole family will love the interactive educational exhibit - the ‘Koalaseum’- and the Gift Shop!

INSIDER TIP

Our koalas love to eat gum leaves, but you might prefer to grab a cuppa and a treat from the cafe at the beautiful, historic Roto House next door. Or bring a picnic blanket and set up under a gum tree! There’s plenty of room for the kids to play. You might even get ‘lucky’ and see one of the wild koalas that live in Macquarie Nature Reserve!

Koala Conservation Australia (KCA) Introducing the delightful 'Lee', a foundation koala for the new Wild Koala Breeding Program.

WHY THIS NEW PROGRAM WILL HELP SAVE KOALAS

Our region has one of the highest koala population densities in the country. However, the 2019 bushfires pushed koalas to the brink of extinction in NSW, QLD and ACT. To help save this endangered species, the team at Koala Conservation Australia (KCA) has been busy. Not only do they continue to run the Koala Conservation Hospital, they’ve invested funds generously donated by the global community into a world-first purpose-built Wild Koala Conservation Breeding Facility to deliver a conservation breeding program! This scientifically rigorous program partners with experts from the Taronga Conservation Society, University of Sydney, and the Australian Museum Research Institute, and aims to rebuild wild koala populations across the nation.

WELCOME TO OUR NEWEST, CUTEST KOALA COUPLE!

KCA recently introduced the Program’s foundation koala breeding pair to Guulabaa! Billy & Lee are a gorgeous, healthy couple who are settling in and are being well cared for by KCA’s vets and volunteers. It’s the first step in an ambitious plan - to rescue NSW north coast koala populations and establish a genetically diverse founder population of healthy koalas. The program’s joeys will be released into the wild as soon as they are able, locally and further afield. This will help conserve the species in our region and around Australia.

KOALAS NEED YOU

Koala Conservation Australia is a registered charity, and the ongoing operation of the Koala Conservation Hospital and Wild Koala Conservation Breeding Program depends on your support.

INTRODUCING ‘GUULABAA: PLACE OF KOALA’

KCA has partnered with the Forestry Corporation of NSW to set up ‘Guulabaa’ (meaning ‘Place of Koala’ in local Gathang language). Located a short drive from Port Macquarie in the Cowarra State Forest, Guulabaa is the home of the new Wild Koala Conservation Breeding facility and Program. With Bunya Land Council and Wildnets Adventure Park also onboard, Guulabaa is shaping up to be a fantastic and welcoming place for the public to visit, learn and play. Wildnets and the Big Koala Sculpture are now open, with the main KCA complex yet to open . The Wild Koala Conservation Breeding visitor deck will house visitorfriendly koala viewing platforms, interactive and educational exhibits and a shop. The breeding facility will include a state-of-theart koala clinic, and a laboratory for testing & scientific research.

WHY THIS AWARDWINNING FINE DINER IS NEXT-LEVEL FABULOUS

From the moment we walk in the door, it’s easy to see why The Stunned Mullet Restaurant is the most awarded fine diner on the Mid-North Coast. The waitstaff are welcoming and professional, the ambience is relaxed, and the views over Town Beach are sublime. A mix of scandi-style furnishings and timbers compliment the shelves of fine wines along walls lined with comfortable banquette seating. Soft furnishings make for better acoustics, meaning we can actually hear our conversation! Hooray! Full marks so far… Behind the scenes, the experienced team are known for their innovation and paddock/sea to plate ethos.

Then the menu arrives, and oh my…it reads like something out of a fairytale. Combinations previously unknown to us, now utterly compelling. Like the hiramasa kingfish, pecan puree, sage, date + olive relish, with charred cauliflower. Or the stand-out hit that they are renowned for- the Glacier 51 Toothfish, shitake suimono, savoy cabbage, black rice wafer, daikon, and enoki crisp! Carnivores and vegetarians are well catered for, with the freshest produce sourced from the abundant Hastings Valley in the Port Macquarie hinterland.

In the meantime, our lovely waiter is friendly and knowledgeable. Would we like some matching wine suggestions?

Yes we would! With a wine list this extensive and expertly curated, we're happy to defer to the Sommelier. It’s clear that the restaurant owner, Lou Perri, is passionate about his wine. He wanders the floor, happily chatting with patrons about wine, travel and provenance. We’re eager to try the recommended drop and it does not disappoint. My palate is positively singing now, and although we're getting rather full, it would be rude not to look at the desert menu. Resistance is futile! The salty crème caramel, yuzu, rum jelly, brown butter, black sesame, and caramel cream is heavenly. A selection of dessert wines rounds things off perfectly. We roll out of there feeling happily indulged and a little giddy by the whole experience, vowing to return (is tomorrow night too soon)?!

The Stunned Mullet has held a Good Food Guide (National Edition) Chefs Hat for a decade, a Trip Advisor Best of the Best rating since 2020 – as well receiving Gourmet Traveller Wine List of the Year’s highest rating of 3 Glasses each year since 2018.

PORT MAC BY MOONLIGHT

Venture out after dark and you’ll discover Port Mac by moonlight has a buzzing bar scene with lots of new places to check out. Having tried and tested a bunch of watering holes and live music venues, we’ve done the hard yards to bring you the low-down (someone had to do it, and you’re welcome). Here are our TOP PICKS FOR:

SUNDOWNERS

OVERLOOKING THE WATER

Wander down to Town Green at twilight and you’ll find Little Shack’s cocktail bar shaking things up under fringed umbrellas, or nab a front row spot at classy Zebu overlooking the river. Across the green, you’ll find the iconic Beach House and the lively Chop n’ Chill. Follow the coastal walk west along the river to Florence Jones Cheese & Wine, overlooking Town Wharf. Across the bridge at the Marina, you can work your way through Hello Sailor’s extensive margarita menu overlooking the boats. A little further

along is Sails, a luxe resort where you can kick back in (Hamptons) style on the expansive deck at the Boathouse Bar & Restaurant. If you really want to get an ‘overwater’ experience, book a sunset river cruise with Cruise Port Macquarie. Their large double-decker vessel is fully licensed!

LIVE MUSIC & DJs

All the groovy young things (and the ‘young-at-heart’ category) are loving Little Shack, Finnians Irish Tavern, Hello Sailor, The Bowl, and Altitude Nightclub If you prefer to kick back and listen to some low-key live tunes, head to Chop n Chill,

Moorebeer Brewing Co. or Black Duck Brewery. If you’re after ticketed and/or bigger name acts, check out what’s on at the Glasshouse, Panthers, and Laurieton United Services Club

LOCAL BREWERS & DISTILLERS

Head to award winning breweries, Moorebeer Brewing Co. and Black Duck Brewery, for live music and tasty craft bevvies (both in the Lake Road Industrial Estate). Around the corner you’ll find the new Port Macquarie Distillery, serving up flights of triple-distilled local gin goodness, plus cocktails and nibbles in style.

COCKTAIL ALCHEMY

Shaking their money makers, the folk behind the bar at Zebu, Little Shack, Hello Sailor, Stick Bar, Jimmy's Bar, The Bowl, Beach House, Boathouse Bar, Beera, and Bar Florian are serving up the goods. Miss Lucy and Birdrock Bar & Grill are the newest kids on the block (we can confirm they're well worth checking out). Expect fresh takes on classics, great food and good times.

But wait, there’s more! Including some great spots in the Camden Haven and Hinterland. Scan the QR for more info.

THE SCENIC PORT MACQUARIE COASTAL WALK

Putting your best foot forward - a definite ‘must do’ activity when in Port Macquarie is the Coastal Walk - a 9km easygrade walk that follows one of the most dramatic and inspiring coastlines in NSW. This walk features beaches, headlands, historic sites, rainforests and fantastic views.

Starting at Westport Park in town (page 76 map ref H8), all the way to Tacking Point Lighthouse, the walk takes approx 3.5 hours.

The Coastal Walk hugs the coastline and features boardwalks, steps for easier access to the headlands, viewing platforms and picnic shelters. Opportunities abound for viewing dolphins plus there is a variety of birdlife and the annual whale migration from May to November.

The Coastal Walk is the result of a partnership between Port MacquarieHastings Council and the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), with both organisations contributing infrastructure along the walk, and they've installed maps and signage on topics such as local history, whale watching and underwater ecology.

DIVISIONS OF GRANDEUR

The Coastal Walk is mostly easy grade and can be divided into four sections:

Westport Park to Town Beach - 2 km (flat)

Town Beach to Flynns Beach - 2.2 km

Flynns Beach to Shelly Beach - 2.2 km

Shelly Beach to Tacking Point Lighthouse - 2.7 km

A few tips will help to make your walk more enjoyable for you and others:

• Keep to the track and keep away from cliff edges.

• Please take rubbish with you or use bins provided.

• Dogs are not allowed on some sections and some beaches, including Town Beach, Flynns Beach, Shelly Beach and Sea Acres National Park. See p69 for more info.

• Remember to take water and have adequate sun protection.
