or more than 40,000 years the Birpai people have been the original inhabitants and occupants of the Greater Port Macquarie region. Relying on the land and waterways to sustain themselves, the Birpai people made temporary huts along the river and around the lakes allowing them to follow the seasonal food trail. The region’s richly diverse landscapes together with the subtropical climate ensured that the community thrived in harmony with the environment for many thousands of years prior to the arrival of Europeans.
Today, with its own unique heritage, Port Macquarie is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the NSW coast, and also one of the fastest growing regions in NSW. Discovered by John Oxley in 1818 and named after the Governor of NSW, Lachlan Macquarie, our first visitors were convicts sent to the Port Macquarie penal settlement in 1821 to serve time for secondary offences. The town was built by those convicts and overseen by military officers of the 48th Regiment. Port Macquarie was opened up to free settlers from
1830 and remained a convict town until 1847. Evidence of our convict past can be viewed at various locations including the convict built St Thomas’ Church, the well of the Female Factory in Munster Street (#LOUNGE Map ref K8), the well of the 1840 gaol located within the Ibis Styles Hotel and at the Port Macquarie Museum. The historic cemetery at the southern end of Horton Street (#LOUNGE Map ref J9) is home to the remains of many of our early settlers including convicts, military officers and free settlers.
PORT MACQUARIE MUSEUM An award winning museum featuring themed displays from the first settlers right through to today. Located in Port Macquarie’s CBD, it is one of the few surviving early commercial and residential buildings in Port Macquarie and is listed on the NSW State Heritage Register. THE HISTORIC COURTHOUSE was designed by colonial architect James Barnet and built in 1869 by local builders Butler and Bourne costing £1,091 and nine shillings. Bago Bluff
Fill up on art for the home, produce for the pantry, tasty gourmet treats and views for the soul. So you’ve arrived in ‘Port’ and it’s easy to be dazzled by the coastline, rainforest and buzzing CBD. But beware! Stick to the coast and you’ll miss out on some of the best parts of our region.
WAUCHOPE An easy 15 minutes west of the freeway you’ll find the friendly and bustling country town of Wauchope. Look out for the magnificent Bago Bluff in the distance! The Hastings Valley is known as the region’s food bowl, and the Wauchope Farmers Market brings the growers, makers, bakers and creatives together every fourth Saturday morning at the Showgrounds. Don’t miss the stretch of unique boutiques, lifestyle stores, galleries, creative collectives, bakeries and cafes on and around the High Street, attracting loyal fans from all over. From Wauchope there are a few of great options to further explore the hinterland, and we’ve included three of them below.
BYABARRA + COMBOYNE Around 25 minutes south-west of Wauchope, pleasantly winding country roads will get you to the idyllic Byabarra Café & Bar, where you can settle in for an afternoon of an indulgence on the veranda with views over the valley.
Wauchope
6 discoverportmacquarie.com.au
Or, you can head further west for another 15 minutes or so to the tiny rural village of Comboyne. Once you break through from the heavily forested hill climb, the plateau opens up spectacularly
with rolling, verdant farmland. To complete the package, Comboyne is flanked by pristine Nature Reserves and waterfalls. Trust us when we tell you it’s worth the drive! Dairy farms are joined by plantings of avocados, macadamias and more. If regenerative farming practices, meeting the animals and sampling fresh produce is of interest, book a tour of the family-run ‘Grazed & Grown Farm’ before you leave.
Nearby Boorganna Nature Reserve has a pretty picnic area and you can stroll down the 2.7 km walking track, which descends into the magnificent rainforest. About half way along this track Rawson Lookout overlooks the 40 metre drop of Mumfords Creek. Take on the Rawson Falls Walk and be rewarded with a beautiful swimming hole. Note that the walk back is uphill! Comboyne is also the gateway to Ellenborough Falls. Located 28kms from Comboyne, Ellenborough Falls at 200m is one of the longest single drop waterfalls in the Southern Hemisphere. Take the 641 timber steps to the bottom of the valley to look up at the amazing falls. Allow a couple of hours to walk down and back.
BEECHWOOD
Rawson Falls
Visit The Larrikins Lock Up, the restored Historic Comboyne Gaol which includes a Retail/Garden Centre in beautiful gardens on the Thone River. The Old Wares shop in the old Cheese Factory is open most weekends, and ‘Collected At Comboyne‘ located in the old Sheather’s Machinery Shed showcases pottery and a print gallery, fresh local produce, collectibles and plants. Comboyne Community Centre & Craft is open 7 days, and is perfect for handmade treasures, and friendly local advice on things to do and places to stay. For sustenance, check out the newly reopened Udder Cow Café, or grab a tasty burger from the General Store and picnic at Boorganna Nature Reserve. If you can’t bear to leave, there are a small number of guest houses and BnB’s dotted around for a relaxing getaway.
Just a few kilometres north west of Wauchope you’ll find Beechwood, home to Wotif’s top rated Country Pub in Australia, the authentic Beechwood Hotel. If you’d prefer to arrive in style, contact Hastings River Horseriding to enquire about their pub rides, and hitch up right out the front. Nearby, the Beechwood Café & Bar serves up hearty fare and is great for groups with a large covered deck.

—A NOTE ON COMBOYNE
Comboyne
LONG FLAT + GINGERS CREEK From Wauchope, head west along the Oxley Highway for around 30 km’s to get to the legendary Long Flat Pub. A long-time favourite with motorbike riders and travellers from New England, this place is full of friendly character, with a fabulous lawn out the back to enjoy a pub meal and a cold beer. There’s even camping on site and regular live music. Not ready to return to normal life? No judgement here! Another hour inland on the Oxley towards Armidale and you’ll get to the landmark travellers rest of Ginger’s Creek. Fuel up, and take a break for some sustenance or book a room for the night (bunk rooms also available for groups). Owner Gary fought off the flames in the 2019 fires, and has since had to rebuild the accommodation, only to have regular road closures impact his business. Note the Oxley Highway roadworks have recommenced, and access is closed/limited on this section of the road on Fridays for the next few months.
Byabarra Café & Bar
For the 200 residents and business owners of Comboyne, the flooding rains over the past couple of years have been devastating. The road from Wauchope to Comboyne has been closed periodically, sometimes for months at a stretch, due to landslips. The road has reopened, although roadworks continue in places. Now, more than ever, this tiny town needs your support!

Whale Watching in Port Macquarie
HUMPBACK WHALES FACTS ↗ Humpback whales are
Each year between May and November, the Port Macquarie coastal region is a haven for whale watching. After a full summer of feeding in Antarctica, approximately 16,000 humpback whales migrate north to subtropical waters where they mate and give birth before making their return trip south. A great way to experience these magnificent creatures is on a whale watching cruise. Departing frequently during the season, these cruises will almost guarantee you an upfront and personal experience in a safe and comfortable environment.

The whale watching boats based out of Port Macquarie are already so close to the mouth of the ocean that you are likely to be only minutes away from the action. This means you spend more time with the whales rather than spending long periods traveling through a large harbour or estuary. It's just another advantage Port has over most other locations.
the most acrobatic of all the great whales. ↗ A whale's tail or fluke is unique to each whale and is what is commonly used to identify an idividual whale, just like a human fingerprint. ↗ A baby whale is called a calf and weighs nearly one tonne when born. 45 Learn from Surfing Australia qualifed coaches at Port Macquarie’s award winning surf school. Lessons 7 days a week, all year round.
For surfing, the best spots are Town, Flynns, Lighthouse, Rainbow and North Haven beaches. The Breakwall at Town Beach works best with swell from the south through to the north-east. The Middle has some powerful lefts and is for the experienced surfer only, while Flagstaff is the protected southern headland of Town Beach. At Flynns Beach, waves can be found with swells from the south to east with offshore north-west winds through to southeast winds. Lighthouse Beach has a protected northern corner that handles north to north-east swell. Further south, Cathie is an open beach, which can offer powerful waves with south to east swell. Rainbow Beach is a protected southern headland with a right point break and beach breaks. Grants Headland picks up the smallest of swells and is best in the north-east swell with west to north-east winds. North Haven (Grants Beach) offers beach breaks with the best waves south to east swell, and works best with west to south-east winds. The bar can hand out some large waves but tidal flow from the river affects the wave quality. (Surfing information from PMQ Surf School). If you are looking for calmer waters and a great place to take the little ones, there are couple of options to choose from - all of which require parent supervision. With its rocky outcrop, Shelly Beach creates a somewhat protected lagoon and is ideal for the littlies. Other good areas for kids include Settlement Point, Lake Cathie lagoon (when open to the ocean) and Pilot Beach in Dunbogan. Town Beach is also good with a long break and plenty of rock pools towards the point for the kids to explore. Beach fishing is very popular with locals and tourists alike. Rocky Beach, Lighthouse Beach, Rainbow Beach and Grants Beach are all popular spots. If you want somewhere to get your 4WD dirty, try North Beach, Lighthouse Beach, Rainbow Beach, Grants Beach or Dunbogan Beach – all of which have a 4WD entrance. A licence is required for recreational fishing (service.nsw.gov.au) and you also require a permit to drive on the approved 4WD beaches. Beach driving permits are available from the Visitor Information Centre located at the Glasshouse, Cnr of Clarence & Hay Streets. Map ref K8.

Port can proudly claim that it has become a food-force to be reckoned with, with many restaurants and cafes truly embracing the locavore tenet. From a sublime dining experience at our one-hatted restaurant to a relaxed coffee, juice or smoothie by the beach, Port Macquarie has it all! COMB OYNE A tranquil place of rolling green pastures, forests, streams and waterfalls located about a 1 hour drive from Port Macquarie. Here you’ll find the Boorganna Nature Reserve, a large remnant of the forest that once covered the whole plateau. There is a fantastic 2.7km walking track that starts at the picnic area where you can see many differing bird species and lush rainforest plants. Allow a few hours for this. While in Comboyne, you must drive a further 25kms to visit Ellenborough Falls in the Manning Valley - a truly amazing sight as water plunges into a gorge 200m below. Putting your best foot forward - a definite ‘must do’ activity when in Port Macquarie is the Coastal Walk - a 9km easy-grade walk that follows one of the most dramatic and inspiring coastlines in NSW. This walk features beaches, headlands, historic sites, rainforests and fantastic views. Starting at Westport Park in town (page 64 map ref H8), all the way to Tacking Point Lighthouse, the walk takes approx 3.5 hours. The Coastal Walk hugs the coastline and features boardwalks, steps for easier access to the headlands, viewing platforms and picnic shelters. Opportunities abound for viewing dolphins plus there is a variety of birdlife and the annual whale migration from May to November. The Coastal Walk is the result of a partnership between Port MacquarieHastings Council and the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), with both organisations contributing infrastructure along the walk. For your convenience, Council and the NPWS have installed quality signage on topics such as local history, whale watching and underwater ecology. Maps are also featured to make it easy for locals and visitors to enjoy and use the walk.

The Koala Hospital
58
The Koala Hospital adjacent to Roto House is the world’s only hospital dedicated solely to the care and preservation of wild koalas. Founded by Jean and Max Starr in 1973, the hospital is entirely self-funded from donations, bequests, adoptions and their shop. It is managed by the charitable organisation, the Koala Conservation Australia, only has six paid staff, 200 volunteers and hosts one overseas volunteer for one month every month - a position that is in very high demand. Facilities include a treatment clinic, eight internal intensive care units, six outdoor intensive care units and 30 rehabilitation yards. There are a small number of non releasable koala patients who are permanent residents (ten in total) that are available for the public to see. The Koala Hospital is a research institution that collaborates and works with a number of universities and other institutions. Up until about five years ago, this unique Hospital would treat up to 200-250 sick and/or injured koalas each year, and successfully rehabilitate and return about 6070% of their admissions to the wild. Koalas are admitted from all over NSW. Primary reasons for admission to care are being hit by cars, dog attacks and the bacterial infection Chlamydia which causes urogenital disease (commonly called wet bottom) and ocular (conjunctivitis).
