Acknowledgement of Country

We acknowledge the Birpai people, the traditional owners of the land in which we work and live, and pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging. We extend our respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who choose to call this region home.

The Birpai people have been the original occupants and inhabitants of this region for over 40,000 years, living sustainably and following seasonal food sources, in a richly diverse and subtropical environment. In 1818, John Oxley explored and mapped the region and in 1821, one of Australia's earliest penal settlements was established (named after Governor Lachlan Macquarie). In 1828 the penal settlement was closed and by 1830 Port Macquarie was welcoming free settlers. The early European settlement period was harsh for convicts and particularly devastating for the Birpai, who faced attacks, diseases, loss of land, and disruption of their way of life at the hands of Europeans settlers. Today, the Aboriginal culture enriches the community in Port Macquarie, now a thriving, diverse, and popular tourist destination in New South Wales, built on values of tolerance and respect among its residents.

The Historic Courthouse, designed by James Barnet and built in 1869, is a National Trust-classified building restored in 1993. It's open Monday to Friday from 10am to 3pm and Saturday from 10:00am-1:00pm, located at the corner of Clarence & Hay Streets. Phone: (02) 6584 1818.

St Thomas’ Anglican Church, Australia’s fifth oldest church, was built by convict labor from 1824 to 1828 with walls made of one-meter-thick hand-made brick. It features a unique 1857 barrel organ. Open for history tours Tuesdays & Thursdays from 9:30am to 11.30pm, $5pp, at 50 Hay Street. Phone: (02) 6584 1033.

Historic Roto House, restored by the National Parks and Wildlife Service, showcases 19th-century furnishings and artifacts. It has the 'Home at Roto' café, which plays host to regular art exhibitions and music/poetry evenings, and is next door to the Koala Hospital. Cafe open daily at 2 Roto Place, 7:00am-3:00pm.

Douglas Vale Historic Homestead & Vineyard offers a glimpse into one of Australia’s original vineyards and a museum with items from its founding families. Features include historic buildings, an orchard, and a working vineyard. Volunteer run, with regular events. Open Wed, Sat + Sun from 10:00am-3:00pm. 235 Oxley Highway, just 2 minutes from Port's CBD.

Port also attracts many events and festivals throughout the year (see pages 24-25), and is a great base from which to explore the region, with a huge range of accommodation.

PORT’S COASTAL WALK & BEACHES

Consistently voted as our #1 rated attraction, our Coastal Walk is really something special. Covering nine kilometers of riverside promenade, pathways, sandy trails, numerous pristine beaches, hidden coves and headlands, you can take a half-day and do the lot or choose a smaller section. There are cafes along the way for sustenance and some great swimming spots as well! See page 21 for our Beach Guide, page 59 for our Coastal Walk map.

TOWN WHARF

Wander down the western end of Clarence Street and you’ll find a long stretch of renewed, accessible commercial wharf area perfect for fishing, watching the boats, or booking a charter or tour from one of the river and sea-going operators. This is where you’ll find Cruise Port Macquarie (River cruises), Port Macquarie Fishing Charters, and around the corner (at the northern end of Short Street) Port Jet Cruise Adventures.

It has parking, seating and interpretive signage. It’s great for checking the surf, enjoying the views, or taking a wander through the pretty pathways and views through the adjacent Mrs York’s gardens.

A short drive (or longer walk/ride) will bring you to Settlement Point, a pretty area of parkland where you can swim, SUP or kayak. Popular with families and fishos, it has picnic and bbq facilities and amenities. You can also take the car ferry across to ‘The North Shore’ from here, a quiet residential area which also has access to popular surfing and camping spots heading north to Crescent Head. PORT CITY BOWLING CLUB IS SET TO TRANSFORM

Port City Bowling Club has long been a local favourite, and now it's set to undergo a remarkable transformation. Extensive renovations are underway (due to be completed in early 2025), and the focus is on creating modern and inviting spaces that blend contemporary design with improved amenities for members and guests. A highlight of the renovation will be the new 180-seat Bar & Grill, with stunning views of Oxley Beach

(and a rooftop terrace overlooking the greens). This new dining venue, alongside a 130-seat function room, will cater to weddings, corporate events, and celebrations, providing a versatile space for all occasions. The Club’s much-loved Bowls and Entertainment Lounges will also be revitalized, and the Sports Bar is set to transform into the ultimate hub for sports fans. Drift Restaurant will also see the addition of an alfresco dining

area that seamlessly connects to the bowling green, offering a relaxed outdoor environment perfect for unwinding. The new spaces, which embrace a coastal industrial theme, will elevate the Club’s offerings and reaffirm Port City Bowling Club as a vibrant cornerstone of the community. The work is being phased to provide minimal disruption to members and guests during the renovation, due to be completed in February-March 2025.

Billabong Zoo

CONSERVATION THROUGH EDUCATION

Billabong Zoo's world-renowned Koala Breeding Centre is celebrating 30 years in January, and we were lucky enough to catch up with Keeper Kelsie Redman.

AS A KEEPER AT BILLABONG ZOO'S KOALA BREEDING CENTRE, YOU HAVE SUCH A FUN AND UNIQUE ROLE. CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT WHAT YOUR JOB ENTAILS?

Absolutely! Working with koalas is incredibly rewarding, but also very hands-on and involved. My day starts with checking in on each koala, observing their health and behaviour, and making sure they're comfortable and content. We monitor their diet closely, ensuring they get all fresh eucalyptus and nutrients they need. There's a lot of attention to detail to ensure that Billabong Zoo's koala residents stay in top health.

BILLABONG ZOO'S KOALA BREEDING CENTRE IS KNOWN GLOBALLY. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MOST EXCITING ASPECTS OF BEING PART OF THIS PROGRAM?

Being part of a program that's dedicated to the conservation of an iconic Australian species. Koalas are under significant threat in the wild due to disease and habitat loss, so our breeding program aims to contribute to the survival of the species. It's an amazing feeling knowing that the work we do here directly supports the conservation of koalas. Seeing a healthy joey born is a proud moment for the whole team.

BILLABONG ZOO'S CONSERVATION EFFORTS ARE TRULY IMPRESSIVE. HOW DO YOU INVOLVE THE PUBLIC IN THESE EFFORTS?

Conservation through education is a huge part of what we do. We have Zoo Keeper Talks every single day here, where guests can learn about all our animals, notjust koalas, and what they can do to help.

For those wanting to know more they can book a Personal Encounter, where they can get upclose, help feed and even pat one of our koalas.

In my opinion, its the best, and cutest, thing your family can do in Port Macquarie.

AND FINALLY, WHAT'S THE MOST REWARDING PART OF YOUR JOB?

For me, it's those moments when I see a koala joey peeking out from its mother's pouch for the first time. We currently have three joeys exploring the world and knowing that we've helped bring new, healthy koalas into the world feels incredible.

And seeing visitors leave the Zoo with smiles on their faces, inspired to protect wildlife and support conservation; makes everything worthwhile.

Billabong Zoo is open from 9.00am every single day, except Christmas Day. Book an up-close and personal Koala Encounter online at billabongzoo.com.au

It’s all about having a fun day out for the entire family in a safe environment. All ages and abilities are welcome to come along for the day or just a few hours. Check the website for opening days/hours. Map page 66.

A (very) brief rundown of our favourite swimming, surfing, fishing, boating, beach driving and camel-riding spots! With miles of pristine waterways and coastline, there’s room for everyone to spread out and do their thing…

SURFING

Port Macquarie has great surf options for all ability levels, and there's a beach for every swell and wind direction! The best spots in the region include Town Beach, Lighthouse, North Shelly, Flynns, Rainbow, and North Haven beaches. Town Beach works in all swell directions and is best in North West to South West winds. The middle has some powerful lefts for the experienced surfer only, while the southern end is more protected. At Flynns Beach, waves can be found for all ability levels (and there's a surf school usually on site). Shelly and Lighthouse provide more powerful waves (and currents). Lighthouse also has a protected northern corner and can still work when the summer noreaster kicks in. Further south around Cathie is an open beach with powerful waves and currents that can be epic on its day! Similarly, Rainbow Beach sucks in the swell, and the Southern headland has a right point break and beach breaks (making it a top pick when the Australian Surf Championships roll into town). Grants Headland picks up the smallest swells from any direction

and is best in a nor-east swell. North Haven/Grants Beach) offers beach breaks, best with a southeast swell. The outer banks and bar can offer big waves on a larger swell, but run-out tides are best avoided.

FAMILY-FRIENDLY

There are a bunch of great beaches for families (and it really depends on what you’re into), but these are our faves as they are often patrolled, a bit more protected, and have cafes, playgrounds, and/or skate parks nearby. They are all beautiful. Our winners are Flynns Beach, Town Beach, the lagoon area of Shelly Beach, Lighthouse Beach (for Camel Riding down the south end, swimming up the north end), Lake Cathie (byo SUP, floatie, kayak, fishing gear etc), Rainbow Beach, North Haven Beach and Pilot Beach.

FISHING & BOATING

With miles of waterways to choose from, where to start? The mighty Hastings River is a playground for boaties and fishos. Numerous boat ramps and jetties provide easy access to

calm waters. Bream, flathead, whiting, and mulloway are commonly caught here, and mud crabs are abundant in the river's mangrove areas. Throw a line in from the iconic Breakwall or from of the wharves in town, or wander west to Settlement Point and Pelican Island. Didn’t bring your gear? No fear! There are several boat/kayak/ fishing hire places around. Prefer someone else to do the work? Book a river cruise with Port Adventure Cruises, or Port Jet, and spot playful dolphins as the scenic mangroves go by. Ramp up the adrenaline and hire a jetski or head out for an Ocean Blast or Whale Watching tour with Port Jet. If you’re after the big fish, head out to sea with Port Macquarie Fishing Charters. Port Macquarie’s proximity to continental shelf drop-offs offers excellent deep-sea fishing, with common catches including marlin, kingfish, tuna, and mahi-mahi. Head south to the Camden Haven, and you’ll find a fishing paradise! The Camden Haven River is serene and expansive, with miles of estuaries to catch a bite (and you’ll likely have your patch all to yourself).

BEACH DRIVING

Try North Beach, Lighthouse Beach (southern end), Rainbow Beach, Grants Beach or Dunbogan Beach – all of which have a 4WD entrance. For access maps and beach driving permits, visit pmhc.nsw.gov.au (search ‘beach driving’).

ADVENTURE-SEEKERS

Port Macquarie’s North Shore is accessible by car ferry at Settlement Point, and offers more secluded and natural beach experiences. North Beach is long and open with 4WD access, but our pick is the raw, wild beauty of Queens Head Beach, set within Limeburners Creek National Park with its stunning headland and rock formations. If you’ve got a reliable 4WD, take the sandy, bumpy track north to Point Plomer and Crescent Head! BYO supplies/ snacks/water. #LOUNGE www.hellokoalas.com

Say "Hello" to The Big Koala at Guulabaa, Place of Koala! Since its establishment in 2014, the awardwinning Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail has grown to include “The Big Koala, Spirit of All Koalas,” a 2.5 metre fibreglass sculpture created by industrial artist John Belfield and painted by Pauline Roods for ‘Guulabaa' in the Cowarra State Forest. This landmark piece, featuring 31 small koalas, was recognized as “Best Landmark Sculpture in Australia” at the 2023 Australian Street Art Awards and is sponsored by Regional Australia Bank. The Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail is one of the region's most popular attractions and features 91 one-metre-high sculptures. Each Hello Koalas' unique artwork conveys messages about cultural heritage, health and wellbeing, diversity, and

wildlife conservation. One notable sculpture, ‘Guula’ (‘koala' in the local Gathang language), painted by Aboriginal students, has served as the Ambassador for ‘Guulabaa’ since 2020. Another sculpture, ‘Crusader Koala’ by Dale Leach, highlights threatened species and is sponsored by WildNets Adventure Park. KOALA CONSERVATION AUSTRALIA

How Koala Conservation Australia (KCA) is helping save the species, one koala at a time…

RESCUING, TREATING AND RELEASING WILD KOALAS FOR OVER 50 YEARS

Our Port Macquarie Koala Hospital was the world’s first koala hospital, and we’ve been rescuing, treating, and releasing thousands of wild koalas since 1973.

EXPANDING OUR CONSERVATION WORK

With the loss of koalas and their habitats accelerating, our work has expanded to include critical koala conservation programs, habitat restoration and protection, and the management of large-scale koala food tree plantations. We’ve become an internationally respected wildlife

conservation, research, education, and tourism hub, and in 2020, we became Koala Conservation Australia, to deliver our broader conservation mission. Today, we have a core staff of vets, scientists, specialists, and wildlife carers, along with 200+ passionate volunteers!

THE BLACK SUMMER BUSHFIRES: FROM TRAGEDY TO HOPE

These devasting fires in 2019 brought unprecedented challenges. Entire habitats were destroyed, and an estimated 60,000 koalas perished. Amid the fires, our hospital’s volunteers worked tirelessly, treating badly burned koalas and rescuing as many as possible. Their efforts touched hearts worldwide, and generous donations poured in. The species’ conservation status has been declared as ‘Endangered’, and at KCA we decided to take bold and urgent action to help save the species.

A WorldFirst for Koala Conservation at ‘Guulabaa’

INTRODUCING THE WORLD'S FIRST WILD KOALA BREEDING PROGRAM

With these life-changing bushfire donations, we had the resources to accelerate our plans to develop a gamechanging Wild Koala Conservation Breeding program. Developed with our research partners at Taronga Conservation Society, we believe the ability to breed koalas successfully in the wild could be key to saving the species. The program aims to breed healthy wild koalas in controlled, forested environments as close to their natural wild environment as possible.

The construction of an innovative Wild Breeding facility at Guulabaa - Place of Koala (see page 30) was completed earlier this year. Joeys born here will eventually be released into the wild, specifically in areas requiring koala population recovery or where genetic diversity is needed to prevent disease and ensure population growth.

GET INVOLVED!

We’re inspired every day by the amazing people we work with - our volunteers and our supporters. We’d love you to join us! Together, we’re providing real hope for the future of wild koalas.

VISIT OUR WORLD-FAMOUS KOALA CONSERVATION HOSPITAL!

MEET OUR RESIDENT KOALAS

You can meet the resident koalas and see them being fed, cared for, and treated in the clinic. You can even ‘adopt’ one of our koalas and help support their care!

There are bookable group tours, self-guided tours, and informative volunteer-guided tours. The whole family will love the interactive educational exhibit—the ‘Koalaseum’—and the Gift Shop!

Home@Roto Cafe

For over 50 years, we’ve been rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing wild koalas. Our Koala Rescue teams are on-call 24 hours a day. We were the very first Koala Hospital in the world, and since then, we’ve evolved into an internationally recognised hub for koala and wildlife conservation, research and training. We’ve also become Port Macquarie’s #1 attraction on Tripadvisor, welcoming over 100,000 visitors from around the world each year!

Koalas love to eat gum leaves, but you might prefer to grab a cuppa and a treat from the cafe at the beautiful, historic Roto House next door. Or bring a picnic blanket and set up under a gum tree! There’s plenty of room for the kids to play.

GUM TIP!
SCAN HERE FOR KOALA HOSPITAL TICKETS!

COMING SOON

Our aging hospital buildings are getting a much-needed upgrade, thanks to a grant from the NSW Government’s 'Restart NSW' Program.

The new Koala Hospital will continue its vital work while offering a wonderful experience for locals and visitors. Expect exciting additions like a raised tree-top walkway, upgraded rehabilitation yards, a koala museum, a theatrette, and dedicated spaces for

research, training, and education. Plus, there will be a unique gift shop, nature walks, interpretive signage, and an Indigenous storytelling area to deepen connections with conservation efforts.

Construction is set to kick off in mid-late 2025. While this work is underway, we’ll transfer our koala patients and hospital residents to Guulabaa - Place of Koala (see page 30), and you can visit us there! Follow us on socials or check online for updates.

WHY THIS AWARDWINNING FINE DINER IS NEXT-LEVEL FABULOUS

From the moment we walk in the door, it’s easy to see why The Stunned Mullet Restaurant is the most awarded fine diner on the Mid-North Coast. The waitstaff are welcoming and professional, the ambience is relaxed, and the views over Town Beach are sublime. A mix of scandi-style furnishings and timbers compliment the shelves of fine wines along walls lined with comfortable banquette seating. Soft furnishings make for better acoustics, meaning we can actually hear our conversation! Hooray! Full marks so far… Behind the scenes, the experienced team are known for their innovation and paddock/sea to plate ethos. Then

the menu arrives, and oh my…it reads like something out of a fairytale. Combinations previously unknown to us, now utterly compelling. Like the hiramasa kingfish, pecan puree, sage, date + olive relish, with charred cauliflower. Or the standout hit that they are renowned for- the Glacier 51 Toothfish, shitake suimono, savoy cabbage, black rice wafer, daikon, and enoki crisp! Carnivores and vegetarians are well catered for, with the freshest produce sourced from the abundant Hastings Valley in the Port Macquarie hinterland.

In the meantime, our lovely waiter is friendly and knowledgeable. Would we like some matching wine suggestions?

Yes we would! With a wine list this extensive and expertly curated, we're happy to defer to the Sommelier. It’s clear that the restaurant owner, Lou Perri, is passionate about his wine. He wanders the floor, happily chatting with patrons about wine, travel and provenance. We’re eager to try the recommended drop and it does not disappoint. My palate is positively singing now, and although we're getting rather full, it would be rude not to look at the desert menu. Resistance is futile! The salty crème caramel, yuzu, rum jelly, brown butter, black sesame, and caramel cream is heavenly. A selection of dessert wines rounds things off perfectly.

We roll out of there feeling happily indulged and a little giddy by the whole experience, vowing to return (is tomorrow night too soon)?!

The Stunned Mullet has held a Good Food Guide (National Edition) Chefs Hat for a decade, a Trip Advisor Best of the Best rating since 2020 – as well receiving Gourmet Traveller Wine List of the Year’s highest rating of 3 Glasses each year since 2018.

THE SCENIC PORT MACQUARIE COASTAL WALK

Putting your best foot forward - a definite ‘must do’ activity when in Port Macquarie is the Coastal Walk - a 9km easygrade walk that follows one of the most dramatic and inspiring coastlines in NSW. This walk features beaches, headlands, historic sites, rainforests and fantastic views.

Starting at Westport Park in town (map ref H8), all the way to Tacking Point Lighthouse, the walk takes approx 3.5 hours.

The Coastal Walk hugs the coastline and features boardwalks, steps for easier access to the headlands, viewing platforms and picnic shelters. Opportunities abound for viewing dolphins plus there is a variety of birdlife and the annual whale migration from May to November.

The Coastal Walk is the result of a partnership between Port MacquarieHastings Council and the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), with both organisations contributing infrastructure along the walk, and they've installed maps and signage on topics such as local history, whale watching and underwater ecology.

DIVISIONS OF GRANDEUR

The Coastal Walk is mostly easy grade and can be divided into four sections:

Westport Park to Town Beach - 2 km (flat)

Town Beach to Flynns Beach - 2.2 km

Flynns Beach to Shelly Beach - 2.2 km

Shelly Beach to Tacking Point Lighthouse - 2.7 km

A few tips will help to make your walk more enjoyable for you and others:

• Keep to the track and keep away from cliff edges.

• Please take rubbish with you or use bins provided.

• Dogs are not allowed on some sections and some beaches, including Town Beach, Flynns Beach, Shelly Beach and Sea Acres National Park.

• Remember to take water and have adequate sun protection.

* Scan the QR for the Walk n' Fork information

Pram friendly sections include Westport Park to Oxley Beach (south), and Kenny Walk (Nobbys Beach to south Shelly Beach).

QUEENS LAKE NATURE RESERVE

Drive a few minutes south to Bonny Hills to find nearby Queens Lake, A serene haven for koalas and wildlife, and ideal for walking (easy, mostly level trails), swimming, fishing, birdwatching, picnicking and paddling.

BOORGANNA NATURE RESERVE

A significant remnant of the extensive rainforest that once covered the Comboyne Plateau, the reserve protects 396 hectares of diverse vegetation ranging from Eucalypt forest to subtropical rainforest. Stroll the 2.7km walk that starts at the picnic area and descends through the tranquil rainforest to Rawson Falls. The return trip (uphill) takes about 2 hours at a steady pace. Bring your bird book, as the reserve is very popular for bird watching (best observed during the early hours of the day). Map page 66.

DOORAGAN NATIONAL PARK ON NORTH BROTHER MOUNTAIN

Overlooking Queens Lake and Camden Haven, the viewing platforms at the summit offer the most breath-taking views and are a must to visit. There is an easy 30 minute walk through lush rainforest, or try the Top Track which is a moderate 1 hour walk. You can return to the summit or continue on the Laurieton Track, which is a demanding 2 hour walk. Make sure to have a vehicle waiting at the other end. Map page 66.

KATTANG NATURE RESERVE

Accessed through Laurieton and across the Dunbogan bridge, the main feature is the majestic Perpendicular Point with its spectacular vertical cliffs plummeting 40 metres to the sea below. The reserve is surrounded by rock platforms, with the Camden River estuary to the north. The Flower Bowl Circuit (2km) is an easy walk with stunning coastal views or try the Perpendicular Point Walk (3.6km return) with panoramic views. Map page 66.

CROWDY BAY NATIONAL PARK

Heading south through Camden Haven and past the Dunbogan turn off, you’ll find Crowdy Bay’s long sweeping beaches, dramatic headland, extensive wetlands, rainforest pockets and untouched coastal land featuring beautiful wildflower displays. There are three camping areas around Diamond Head and several day use areas along the coast. Map page 66.
