Visitors from around the world come to experience Moab’s dark skies discovermoab.com/moab-night-skies
Arches’ relative isolation from the artificial light of urban areas makes it an ideal place for viewing the night sky. Park staff have also worked to reduce ambient light from within the park by replacing park lighting with "nightsky friendly" lights and fixtures.
Arches National Park preserves a wealth of resources. Many, like natural darkness, have become more significant as they become increasingly rare outside the park.
On a clear night, you can see great stars just about anywhere in the park. Areas off the main park road with few obstructions of the sky are best.
The farther north you drive, away from the lights of Moab, the darker the sky will be.
Try stargazing at these areas:
- Balanced Rock Picnic Area
- The Windows
- Garden of Eden Viewpoint
- Panorama Point
Night skies at Canyonlands are so pristine that the International Dark-Sky Association designated Canyonlands as a Gold-Tier International Dark Sky Park in 2015. Canyonlands joins three other national parks in southern Utah with the International Dark Sky Park designation.
Visitors come from all over the world to attend night sky ranger programs and to experience the dark skies they never see at home. In many national parks these night sky programs are the most popular ranger-led activities.
Recognized as an International Dark Sky Park in 2016, is one of the most active and accessible areas to stargaze in the Moab area. Its high plateau location, mountains far in the distance and cities out of sight yields a nearly full view of celestial sphere.
Park staff routinely provide programs celebrating the night sky, from walks under the full moon to gazing through telescopes at objects millions of light years away.

Wine tasters and connoisseurs from around the world are often quite surprised to learn that there is a vineyard and winery right here in Moab area. Moab’s long growing season coupled with its fertile, sandy soils has resulted in production of world-class wines.
Spanish Valley Vineyards & Winery is conveniently located just a few miles south of Moab – the perfect way to relax after a hike in Arches or near Moab.
They specializes in single-vineyard estate-bottled wines. That means from the growth of the grapes, through fermentation and bottling, they handle the entire process at this single location. Their wine never leaves their Moab property until it is 100% bottled, packaged, and ready for you! The dry rocky Moab earth makes for delicious white German-varietal wines which are the showcase wines at the vineyard.
The vineyard dates back more than 40 years when it was a Utah State University agricultural experiment initiated to determine whether grapes could be a cash crop that could help bolster the local economy as uranium mining was becoming less profitable.
They offer tastings, sales, tours, and can host your special event. $15 tastings and $50 vineyard tours.

When it comes to the red rock desert of Moab, water recreation may not be the first thing that comes to mind. But the same rivers that carve the epic landscapes and canyons also provide a wide variety of water activities and a great way to keep cool during hot summer months.
Whether you’re looking for family-friendly raft trips or wilder multi-day whitewater adventures, there’s something for everyone on Moab’s red rock-lined waters. You’ll find calmer floats in the Fisher Towers section of the Colorado River, while Westwater and Cataract Canyons contain faster-moving rapids.
For a calmer approach to the Colorado River, canoes, kayaks, and paddle boards are the perfect way to explore. There are several ideal flatter stretches of water, particularly along the previously mentioned Moab Daily section, varying based on your preferred trip length. With numerous boat ramps along the way, you’ll have the flexibility to make your trip as long or short as you like. So, go at your own pace and pack a picnic lunch to enjoy along the banks.
