Welcome

“The towns of Sleaford and North Hykeham are thriving places to visit, whilst North Kesteven’s picturesque villages give you space to explore their history and heritage at your leisure.”

5

5

Sleaford Sleaford is a traditional market town, with beautiful St Denys Church, a market place and abundant history. The River Slea running through the town once brought barges to Navigation Wharf via the Sleaford Navigation. The Navigation was a key trade route central to the town’s burgeoning growth and brought prosperity to many, plus a lasting heritage which can still be explored today. But it’s not all about history, with many world-class products originating in this small unassuming town, ranging from record-breaking farm machinery to films, violins and supersonic engineering. There’s also the new museum, National Centre for Craft and Design and up to the minute leisure facilities adding to the town’s vibrancy and distinctiveness. Look out for the Made in Sleaford marque badged on locally-made goods with pride.

North Hykeham

Discover cosy limestone cottages and towering gothic spires nestling beside contemporary architecture, landscaped grounds and parkland. You can also discover lively, flourishing communities, much-valued shops, cafes and facilities and fascinating arts and heritage trails.

By road: it is well served by the A1, A15, A17 and A46; By rail: there are many local station stops linking through to mainline stations at Grantham, Lincoln and Newark; By air: East Midlands, Humberside and Robin Hood (Doncaster/Sheffield) airports are the closest; It’s also just a stone’s throw from Lincoln, the Lincolnshire Coast and other areas within the East Midlands.

Welcome Bomber Command Centre

International Bomber Command Centre The International Bomber Command Centre continues to take shape at Canwick Hill in the north of the District. When complete the Centre will provide a world-class facility to serve as a point of recognition, remembrance and reconciliation for the World War II Bomber Command operations. The first part of the memorial centre, a 102ft tall spire, is in place standing sentinel at the top of the hill to bravery and sacrifice of many thousands of young men from across the world.

Bomber Command Centre

The Lincolnshire Bomber Command Memorial Trust, in partnership with the University of Lincoln, unveiled the Memorial Spire and surrounding walls, commemorating the 26,296 aircrew who lost their lives flying from 27 local Bomber Command bases in the autumn of 2015.

11

The future of the site With work continuing to realise the broader elements of the centre public access is restricted, but the spire can be clearly seen and appreciated from the Viking Way long-distance path that runs alongside the site above Lincoln’s South Common.

Bomber Command Centre

Lincolnshire earned the title of ‘Bomber County’ when the Headquarters of both 1 and 5 Groups and a third of all RAF activity was based in the county. Many of the best-known operations flew from one of these 27 bases, accounting

12

for 46% of all of the Command’s losses. This deep connection and linked history defined the location for this new memorial centre. With there being no single national or international facility in existence, it is of significant national importance that this is addressed and that the history and heritage of Bomber Command is gathered and conserved for future generations. The archive team is busily digitising many thousands of privately-held diaries, letters, logbooks and official documents items to be incorporated into the archive and made available online and through the education centre onsite. Oral histories are also being captured from

The IBCC site will provide a contemplative space for recognition, remembrance and reconciliation. The Centre will provide a means of learning the history of the Command from those who experienced it first-hand.

veterans and civilians providing an invaluable glimpse into their personal memories of the conflict.

The spire and centre will be surrounded by landscaped gardens reflecting the international and local significance and influence of Bomber Command and inside, the centre will feature the stories and memories of people involved in the operation at all levels as air and ground crew, at home and overseas.

The site is still under construction whilst the landscaping for the Peace Gardens is complete. Work will then start on building the Chadwick Centre which the Trust hopes will be open fully in June 2017 In the meantime the site is not open to the general public but visitors can book on a series of guided tours which will be running monthly through 2016. The dates for these are as follows: • • • • • •

25th January 22nd February 10th March 21st March 7th April 25th April

• • • • •

13th May 27th June 25th July 22nd August 26th September

To book your place please email events@ internationalbcc.co.uk giving your name and address and the date you wish to attend. Places are limited so early booking is recommended. The tours are free but donations will, of course, be gratefully received. Up to date information about the project and how to contribute to the memorial appeal can be obtained via the appeal website www.internationalbcc.co.uk

Bomber Command Centre

Standing 102ft (31.09m) tall, the memorial spire is the height of the Avro Lancaster’s wingspan; 16ft/5m at the base, which is the overall width of a Lancaster wing. Ultimately the names of everyone lost in Bomber Command Operations from Lincolnshire, the UK and overseas will be cut into the memorial walls.

Welcome Aviation Heritage

Aviation Heritage Lincolnshire’s lasting legacy

Military aviation showed its devastating potential during World War II. The Air Ministry demanded larger airfields with dispersed facilities, hidden to reduce the risks of air attack. By 1940 the search for prospective airfields was at full throttle and Lincolnshire was an ideal platform. When the war ended in 1945, there was no longer the need for so many military airfields and many were closed down and their concrete runways torn up and returned to agriculture. The remains of some of these former airfields are still visible today, standing out eerily amongst the landscape of the District.

For more information about aviation within the district and Lincolnshire please visit www.aviationheritagelincolnshire.com

Aviation Heritage

Lincolnshire is renowned as the ‘Home of the Royal Air Force’ and has a vast aviation heritage. The county’s flat, open countryside and its location made it ideal for the development of airfields during World War I, and in World War II, Lincolnshire became the most important home of Bomber Command.

15

North Kesteven is home to three operational airfields serving the modern-day RAF, while former airfields, museums and memorials are testament to the bravery of the men and women who served here during the most turbulent of times. These can be explored using The North Kesteven Airfield Trail which enables you to explore this rich history and heritage.

Aviation Heritage

2016 is an important year for RAF Cranwell as it celebrates its centenary,

16

first opening on 1 April 1916. Royal Naval Air Service Station Cranwell, associated with HMS Daedalus, opened as a training station to train officers to fly aeroplanes such as BE2cs, Avro 504s and Sopwith Camels and later airships and kite balloons. In 1918 the RNAS and Royal Flying Corps were amalgamated to form the Royal Air Force with the station becoming RAF Cranwell. Home to the iconic College Hall, RAF Cranwell can proudly claim to be the home of many firsts. The first military air academy in the world, the first UK flight of the jet engine, the take off point of the first long range flight – the list goes on! The fascinating history of this unique establishment can be discovered at Cranwell Aviation Heritage Centre, just across the A17. The Centre will also be celebrating the Centenary of Cranwell and the 75th anniversary of the first UK jet flight from Cranwell on 15 May 1941. Visit www. cranwellaviation.co.uk for more information.

Did you know that 15 May 2016 marks the 75th Anniversary of the first jet propelled flight taking off from RAF Cranwell?

Welcome Welcome

Delightful countryside and historic landscapes North Kesteven is the privileged home to a variety of landscapes, ancient woodlands, public art and historic buildings. The fascinating history woven into the landscape extends from the Roman waterways of the Car Dyke, through Medieval settlements and agricultural areas, to the more recent airfields of World War II. There is evidence of the past everywhere; Roman roads, deserted Medieval villages, lost priories and wonderful Medieval churches.

To help discover this fascinating heritage and enjoy the diverse wildlife of our countryside, North Kesteven District Council has produced a series of Stepping Out walks. The walks are complemented by informative leaflets providing easy-to-use maps and directions, together with points of interest along the way. The walks cover a variety of landscapes over 18 distinct areas of the District, encouraging residents and visitors alike to explore the delightful countryside. These walks include such themes as Knights Templar, WWII aviation sites, woodland, historic buildings and artwork installations.

Countryside & History

Stepping Out

27

The Stepping Out network comprises over 135 miles of waymarked walks

Countryside & History

Most of the routes start from a designated car park and are circular and way-marked so you can be sure of finding your car at the end! Each features notable architecture, landscapes and vistas and provides details of local pubs, cafes and farm shops to help you to make a day of it. They have been carefully chosen to bring North Kesteven’s unique heritage to life and with a variety of routes ranging from under a mile to nine miles, there is a walk for everyone.

28

The Airfield Trail booklet explores the wealth of aviation history within North Kesteven, however a number of Stepping Out walks also visit reminders of our aviation heritage.

Leaflet 1, The Skellingthorpe Old Wood Walk begins in the car park of Skellingthorpe Community Centre which is also home to a heritage room telling the story of 50 and 61 Squadrons who flew from RAF Skellingthorpe in WWII. Linger a while before your walk to appreciate the importance of this small village during the conflict. Leaflet 9, Wellingore and Temple Bruer, explores the countryside around these historic villages. The Knights Templar Walk passes the site of former RAF Wellingore, where the silent pill boxes still stand as a reminder of the noise and activity they would once have witnessed. At Temple Bruer, make sure you enter the tower which once formed part of the Knights Templar preceptory. At the top of the stone stairway you can find the initials of airmen stationed at RAF Wellingore carved into the stonework, bringing a very personal link to their lives.

Leaflet 12, Martin and Metheringham Barff, visits former RAF Metheringham where you can pause at the memorial to 106 Squadron who flew more than 200 sorties from the airfield, with the loss of 57 Lancasters and countless lives. Metheringham Airfield Visitor Centre is a short distance from the village of Martin and is dedicated to the men and women who flew and supported RAF 106 Bomber Squadron from 1943 until the end of the Second World War. As you return to your car on the edge of Martin village, take time to visit the Local History Museum at

The Scopwick Walk in leaflet 15 begins on Vicarage Lane on the outskirts of this delightful village. The Stepping Out car park is close to the Scopwick Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery. A visit here is a moving experience, highlighting how young these men were, bravely fighting for freedom. Anglo Canadian pilot John Magee is buried here, famous for his poem ‘High Flight’, which was famously quoted by US President Ronald Regan in his tribute to the crew of the Challenger space shuttle. The Stepping Out walks explore many other hidden treasures in North Kesteven. For more information on all of these walks visit www.heartoflincs.com or call the Tourism Team on 01529 308102.

Manor House Stables on Timberland Road. This small museum tells the stories of local people during the Great War. On display are uniforms, memorabilia, old postcards, medals and a display about the Scopwick Voluntary Aid Detachment hospital. The Museum is open to visitors by appointment or during special events.

There are many other venues worth a visit, from Navigation House to Heckington’s eightsailed windmill and North Ings Farm Museum.

Spires & Steeples Arts and Heritage Trail The Spires & Steeples Arts and Heritage Trail is a village-to-village journey through the heart of Lincolnshire from Lincoln Cathedral to St Denys’ Church in Sleaford. It provides an opportunity for visitors and residents to discover the artistic and historical treasures of North Kesteven. North Kesteven has a rich history and heritage, with stories that are part of the fabric of Lincolnshire and intertwined with the character of its landscape, wide fens and open heath, reflecting open, changing skies. These village trails and artworks have been made possible by the boundless enthusiasm, passion and energy of the residents that have been involved.

Did you know that there is a Spires & Steeples marathon running and walking challenge through some of North Kesteven’s most beautiful countryside each October?

Full details can be found in the official Spires & Steeples booklet. To find your nearest retailer please contact the DiscoverNK team on 01529 308207 or email discovernk@n-kesteven.gov.uk

Countryside & History

The name ‘Spires and Steeples’ refers to the spires of churches once used as landmarks to navigate from village to village and to the rural sport of steeplechasing; races from steeple to steeple. It also recognises the important part the churches have played in the lives of these communities, as well as being a reflection of the times, families and cultures that created, altered and rebuilt them.

Did you know – the white flour at Cogglesford Watermill is ground using a quartz-like millstone to ensure a finer flour?

Farm shops and local food producers abound, and monthly Farmer’s Markets are held – in Sleaford Market Place on the first Saturday; and at the Ark in North Hykeham on the fourth Friday, where visitors can source the very best of Lincolnshire produce.

Cogglesford Watermill stocks a wide range of local produce including honey, preserves and Welbourne’s award winning plum bread. Why not try one of Gorse Farm’s delicious fruit vinegars, ideal as a marinade or just drizzled on Yorkshire puddings, pancakes or ice cream – the choice is yours! Until recently the mill used Derbyshire grit stones to produce delicious wholemeal flour. Following frequent requests for white flour, a second set of millstones have been installed alongside the grit stones and the mill now sells ‘unbleached white flour’ once again. Barry Bailey, the miller explains “we use the term ‘unbleached flour’ as people tend to expect white flour to be just that – white! Much of the white flour nowadays is bleached to create the white appearance, however ours just has the bran removed which makes a finer, lighter coloured flour.”
