Sleaford is a traditional market town, with the beautiful St Denys Church, a market place and abundant history. The River Slea running through the town once brought barges to Navigation Wharf via the Sleaford Navigation. The Navigation was a key trade route central to the town’s burgeoning growth and brought prosperity to many, plus a lasting heritage which can still be explored today.
This guide has been designed to help you get the most out of your stay in North Kesteven. Further information on attractions, accommodation and visitor information is available at www.heartoflincs.com Easily accessible by car or public transport, the district is well connected from the A1, A15, A17 and A46 roads; from Grantham, Lincoln and Newark mainline stations; East Midlands, Humberside and Robin Hood Airports; as well as locally from Lincoln, the Lincolnshire Coast and other areas within the East Midlands.

Aviation Lincolnshire is renowned as the ‘Home of the Royal Air Force’ and has a vast aviation heritage. The county’s flat, open countryside and its location made it ideal for the development of airfields during World War I, and in World War II, Lincolnshire became the most important home of Bomber Command.
© Marcus Potts
North Kesteven is home to three operational airfields serving the modernday RAF, while former airfields, museums and memorials are testament to the bravery of the men and women who served here during the most turbulent of times. These can be explored using the North Kesteven Airfield Trail which enables you to explore this rich history and heritage.

The North Kesteven Airfield Trail has been designed to enable you to fully experience the District’s aviation heritage.
The height of the memorial spire is the wingspan of the Avro Lancaster and recognises the international and local significance and influence of Bomber Command. The site is still under construction and is expected to be open in July 2017. Lincolnshire earned the title of ‘Bomber County’ when the Headquarters of both 1 and 5 Groups and a third of all the UK’s stations were based in the county. This deep connection and linked history defined the location for the new International Bomber Command Centre located at Canwick Hill in the north of the District.
Up to date information about the project and how to contribute to the memorial appeal can be obtained via the appeal website www.internationalbcc.co.uk
what to do
Currently no single national or international facility exists. Therefore it is of significant importance that the history and heritage of Bomber Command is gathered and conserved for future generations.

Countryside We are proud to be home to a variety of landscapes, ancient woodlands, public art and historic buildings. The fascinating history woven into the landscape extends from the Roman waterways of the Car Dyke, through medieval settlements to the more recent airfields of World War II. There is evidence of the past everywhere; Roman roads, deserted medieval villages, lost priories and wonderful Medieval churches. To help discover this fascinating heritage and enjoy the diverse wildlife of our countryside, North Kesteven District Council has produced a series of Stepping Out walks. The walks are complemented by informative leaflets providing easy-to-use maps and directions, together with points of interest along the way.
what to do
The Stepping Out network comprises more than 135 miles of way-marked walks, ranging from less than three to nine miles, which can be explored using our Go Stepping Out! leaflet. Two new walks are due to be added to the programme in spring this year, with 2.5 and six mile routes being created for Heckington.
10
There are also many green spaces to enjoy, from ancient woodland to Whisby Nature Park which has tranquil walks as well as adventure playgrounds for families. Whisby Nature Park is a part of Witham Valley Country Park which is made up of a number of high quality green spaces. For more information visit withamvalleypark.co.uk
Spires & Steeples Arts and Heritage Trail The Spires & Steeples Arts and Heritage Trail is a village-to-village journey through the heart of Lincolnshire from Lincoln Cathedral to St Denys’ Church in Sleaford. It provides an opportunity for you to discover the artistic and historical treasures of North Kesteven. The name ‘Spires and Steeples’ refers to the spires of churches once used as landmarks to navigate from village to village and to the rural sport of steeplechasing.
Full details can be found in the official Spires & Steeples booklet for only £1.50. To find your nearest retailer please contact the DiscoverNK team on 01529 308207.

Ridges & Furrows Arts & Heritage Trail Project Ridges & Furrows is multi-art project that celebrates North Kesteven’s rich heritage. The project brings together artists, historians and local people to delve into the history of towns and villages along the Lincolnshire ridge, revealing hidden traditions as well as exploring their present day identities. In 2016 the project worked with communities in the villages of Welbourn to explore its agricultural heritage and in North Hykeham to follow the story of its growth from small village to large town.
what to do
In 2017 the project is coming to Waddington to develop a series of events and new artwork. The longer term legacy of the Ridges & Furrows project will be the creation of a new arts and heritage trail that links the Terry O’Toole Theatre in North Hykeham with The National Centre for Craft & Design in Sleaford via villages along the Lincoln ridge.
12
Ridges & Furrows is initiated by the NK Arts Partnership (artsNK, The National Centre for Craft and Design, Design Factory, Design-Nation and The Terry O’Toole Theatre), and supported with funding from The Heritage Lottery Fund. For more information about the project visit www.ridgesandfurrowstrail.org

When in Sleaford When in Sleaford… is a new arts and heritage trail which takes its inspiration from Sleaford’s rich history. Eighteen bronze roundels, created by artist David Mackie, are sited on walls and in pavements around the town. The artworks act as way-markers mapping out pathways through and around Sleaford and encouraging people to discover the town’s heritage, from historic buildings to visitor attractions and existing artworks.
When in Sleaford was commissioned by North Kesteven District Council, through artsNK, working in partnership with William Alvey School. The trail has also been supported by Sleaford Renewable Energy Plant, The Johnson & Mukherjee Brothers Charitable Trust, The Royal British Legion and Sleaford Town Council.
