Get your boots on‌ North Kesteven is privileged to have a vast and beautiful countryside with picturesque villages and exquisite medieval churches, a living landscape steeped in history and rich in wildlife. The North Kesteven Walking Festival is a celebration of the countless walking opportunities available within the District and we want you to celebrate with us too! We have lots on offer; take a look at our programme, you’ll be sure to find a walk for you!

Programme of walks THE SPIRES AND STEEPLES ARTS & HERITAGE TRAIL: A WALK STEEPED IN HISTORY Saturday 9 July, 9am Start Distance: 13 miles (allow 6hrs) Discover the rich history, heritage and local stories of the villages of North Kesteven along the Spires and Steeples Arts & Heritage Trail. Finishing at Lincoln Castle you will have the opportunity to visit the renowned Magna Carta Vault and Victorian Prison. You will also get to see the breath-taking Poppies: Wave sculpture by artist Paul Cummins and designer Tom Piper originally seen at the Tower of London, that will be hosted by Lincoln Castle for a limited time only. This is a linear walk and transport will be provided back to the start point to collect your cars, departing Lincoln Castle at 5pm. A BIT OF SLEAFORD PAST Saturday 9 July, 10:30am Start Distance: 3 miles (allow 1.5hrs) Join us for a leisurely morning walk through the interesting town of Sleaford, with glimpses of its history. AN INTRODUCTION TO GEOCACHING Saturday 9 July, 11am Start Distance: 3.8 miles (allow 2hrs) Discover a new activity with an introduction to geocaching. With a number of new geocaches to be uncovered along the route varying in size and difficulty, this real-world outdoor treasure hunt is a great morning out for the whole family. With experienced geocachers available on the day to accompany those new to the game, this event is suitable for beginners and avid fans of geocaching. WITHAM VALLEY AND BRACEBRIDGE HALL FISHPONDS PHOTO WALK Saturday 9 July, 2pm Start Distance: 4-5 miles (allow 2hrs) Enjoy taking photos of our beautiful countryside? Join us for a flat walk along the river bank and field paths just south of Lincoln. You can expect lots of butterflies, damselflies and demoiselles along the river banks, and plenty of wildfowl on the water; all under big Lincolnshire skies. Distance: Approx. 1 mile (allow 2hrs) Join local medical herbalist, Hannah Sylvester, for an enlightening and interactive stroll around the local vicinity, looking at the wild flowers, herbs and weeds that grow wild in the area. Learn about their rich history, how to grow your own, and how to use them medicinally and in the kitchen. All attendees will receive an informative hand out about all the plants discussed, and how you can grow and use them at home. Children welcome but must be accompanied by an adult. With most of the route along footpaths, this walk is open to all – whether you are a local resident or from a neighbouring area, come along and learn a little history about this interesting large village within North Kesteven.

Over 500 species of plants have been identified at Whisby over the years including rare woodland orchids, a few survivors from its heathland past, and a wide variety of species of hedgerow, meadow and water’s edge forming a community which buzzes with insects. A short walk from the Natural World Centre can reveal a wealth of flowering plants typical of the local poor, dry, sandy soils which cannot be found in the countryside at large so take this opportunity to expand your botanical knowledge. Distance: 1 mile (allow 2hrs)

Distance: Approx. 8.7 miles (allow 3-4hrs)

Join us for a circular evening walk of approximately 8.7 miles with a short guided tour by Heritage Lincolnshire of the surviving 12th century Knights Templar Preceptory Tower at Temple Bruer. This walk is a fairly moderate level along rural footpaths and roads, with fantastic panoramic views across the Trent Valley. With options to finish at the Preceptory for a shorter walk as well as completing the full route – this walk is suitable for a range of different abilities. Please note; transport back from the preceptory for those choosing the shorter option is not included and will be the walkers responsibility to arrange.

VIKING WAY AND BRACEBRIDGE LOW FIELDS PHOTO WALK Friday 15 July, 8pm Start Distance: 4-5 miles (allow 2hrs) In celebration of the Vikings Way’s 40th anniversary year, join us for a loop walk between Lincoln, Waddington and Bracebridge Heath. The field path section includes part of the old Lincoln to Grantham railway line, and a steep ascent up grassy slopes to gain the ridge of Lincoln Edge. Have your cameras at the ready with the possibility of catching a nice summers evening sunset and if we’re lucky maybe even an owl or kestrel hunting in the dusk light. North Kesteven has much to offer for visitors and residents alike! It is an ideal place to explore the many local attractions, bustling market towns and charming villages plus much more. The district also offers many cafes & restaurants and exquisite overnight accommodation which will make your visit memorable. Whether you’re new to North Kesteven, or taking the opportunity to get out and about in your local area, we hope that your walk is just the beginning!

• A leader will be present at each walk, whatever the weather. Please stay behind the leader at all times. Please remember our leaders are volunteers and should be treated with respect at all times. • Walk durations are approximate. We recommend you over estimate this duration if paying for parking. • Walks start PROMPTLY at the times stated in the programme. Please arrive 10 to 15 minutes earlier if you wish to change shoes etc. •P lease wear suitable clothing for the weather, including suitable footwear for muddy paths and rough terrain.
