Walking

Rutland is a wonderful place for walking all year round and each season brings its own palette of colours to the rolling countryside. The landscape in spring is spectacular - lush green fields and bright yellow daffodils along with lots of spring lambs of course, all create the idyllic rural picture. The arrival of summer brings wonderfully long days perfect for getting out and exploring the countryside, whilst autumn’s reds and golds signal the coming of the cooler weather and create some of the most captivating countryside scenes. Finally winter takes its turn, transforming the county into a picturesque winter wonderland with stunningly crisp, frosty scenes.

If you prefer a more traditional theatre experience head to Uppingham Theatre which has built an enviable reputation for the quality of its live entertainment. From West End shows to top class symphony orchestras and amazing jazz performances, its events diary is packed all year round. Look out for the many art galleries to enjoy in the towns of Oakham and Uppingham - some pieces are worth many thousands of pounds. There’s an active arts community in Rutland who regularly hold a rolling programme of exhibitions in various locations around the county, so look out for these during your stay.

Your guide to quality When you decide to visit Rutland, you’ll want to be assured that the accommodation you’ve chosen to stay in meets the standards you would expect. That’s why, in this guide, you’ll only find members of the two nationally recognised quality assurance schemes – The AA and Quality in Tourism. These schemes assess accommodation providers against a rigorous set of national criteria and inspect each property every year to ensure standards are being maintained. A more comprehensive accommodation listing can be found on the Discover Rutland website.

Star Ratings

Quality assured accommodation is graded with stars, except the AA assessed camping and caravanning sites which are graded with pennants. Star ratings are designed to meet the expectations of consumers with regards to quality. Generally, a one star rating would indicate simple, practical no frills accommodation whereas at the other end of the scale a five star rating would indicate exceptional quality with a degree of luxury..

Awaiting Grading

AA Food Rosettes

If you find this next to a property listing, it means that the property has applied to participate in either The AA or Quality in Tourism scheme and is waiting to be assessed.

Holders of AA rosettes demonstrate a high standard of cooking which sets them apart from other restaurants in their area. They create dishes using quality local ingredients put together with care understanding and skill.

Walkers, Cyclists, Pets & Families Welcome

Awards For Hotels, Guest Accommodation and Self-Catering properties. Highly sought after, these awards are given to an establishment in addition to the star rating, and reflect the highest standards of quality in bathrooms, bedrooms and service.

AA & Quality in Tourism Breakfast Awards Properties with these awards offer their guests quality and choice at breakfast combined with service and hospitality which exceeds their star rating.

AA Dinner Awards The AA pie symbol indicates a very special dinner with an emphasis on freshly prepared local ingredients.

General Symbols

The National Accessible Scheme Establishments taking part in the National Accessible Scheme have been assessed to ensure guests with hearing, mobility or visual impairment will have a comfortable stay.

Prices & Booking Prices in this guide are generally on a per room per night basis. Please be aware that prices can vary depending on season, view from room, numbers of occupants in a room or room facilities, so please check with your chosen provider to obtain a total price before confirming your booking. To confirm your room, book online at www.discover-rutland.co.uk or, if the accommodation is not bookable online, contact your chosen establishment directly. Please note that inclusion in this guide does not constitute a recommendation by Discover Rutland.

nglian Water is enormously proud of Rutland Water, regarded as the outdoor playground of the East Midlands. Visitors can enjoy many activities including fishing, sailing, cycling, birdwatching and water sports. Rutland Water is also a vitally important water resource, helping Anglian Water provide drinking water to an ever increasing population. The recent Habitat Creation Scheme at Rutland Water has had a hugely positive effect on Rutland Water Nature Reserve; it now boasts a brilliant array of habitats for all species from birds to mammals to invertebrates through the construction of new freshwater lagoons, wet meadows, ditches, scrapes and islands as well as a brand new sand martin bank. These new areas complement the existing lagoons, reed beds and open water to provide an excellent space for nature. Visitors to the reserve now have access to an assortment of hides overlooking a variety of habitat types including no less than eight lagoons at the Egleton reserve alone. Rutland Water is one of the most important wildfowl reserves in Great Britain which regularly holds in excess of 20,000 waterfowl. It is also home to England’s largest Osprey colony; come and see these amazing birds between March and early September. Rutland Water is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, a European Special Protection Area and internationally recognised as a globally important wetland (RAMSAR) site. For further information on Anglian Water leisure facilities and the Rutland Habitat Creation Scheme, visit www.anglianwater.co.uk
