Cultural Connections
The opportunity to discover the region’s rich Indigenous culture and traditions is an unforgettable, only-inSaskatoon experience for visiting groups.
LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
We acknowledge that we are on Treaty 6 Territory and the Homeland of the Métis people. We reaffirm our relations which we are bound to by our ancestors through Treaty, to steward this land and seek mutual benefit on this land for as long as the grass grows, the sun shines, and the river flows. We pay our respect to the First Nation and Métis ancestors of this place and honour Elders and Survivors as we bring awareness to Indian Residential and Day Schools. The Sixties Scoop, Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirited. To acknowledge this territory and its keepers on their traditional terms is to act in reciprocity so that truth may be understood, and reconciliation is made possible.
OUR COMMITMENT & REQUEST

Discover Saskatoon acknowledges our role in Truth & Reconciliation. Our commitment to ensure territorial protocol is acknowledged and sustained through our actions, partnerships, events and economic development initiatives, also extends to our partners and clients. We will work alongside our clients to ensure understanding and respectful protocols are incorporated into the fabric of your programs.

WHERE TO START?
Discover Saskatoon works with local Indigenous leaders and educators to include Indigenous perspectives, protocols and performances into a meeting program.
“Working with one of our Indigenous leaders to integrate perspectives will immerse everyone in the vibrancy, depth and connection found in our local Indigenous way of life,” explains Stephanie Clovechok, CEO, Discover Saskatoon.
“We are partnered with our Indigenous community members in our daily business and strive to bring the same authentic opportunity to our clients hosting events in Saskatoon, which will enhance the opportunity for deep meaningful connections to be made. We will facilitate the necessary relationships to ensure the appropriate, respectful and seamless handling of protocols regarding offerings, gestures and compensation to participating Indigenous community members.”
SASKATOON INDIGENOUS HISTORY
Saskatoon is located on Treaty 6 territory, an area that has been stewarded by the Indigenous people for over 11,000 years. It is home to the Nehiyawak (Plains Cree) and Anishinapek/ Nakaway (Saulteaux) nations. When visiting Saskatoon, engaging in Indigenous-led conversations, meals, activities, and education is a key part of supporting Indigenous initiatives to reclaim and share culture. Whether you are enjoying a day at Wanuskewin, having a relaxing stay at Dakota Dunes, or engaging in the Indigenous stories being told at the Remai Art Gallery, when you visit Treaty 6, you are building connections to the land and the people who steward it, participating in a shared future with reconciliation at its heart.
Lyndon J. Linklater, Traditional Knowledge Keeper (Nehiyaw/ Anishinabe) and Storyteller in Treaty 6 territory, was able to meet and share stories with us and convey the importance of good relations. After giving tobacco, a shared way to communicate respect and care to Indigenous elders, we began with the history of Saskatoon.
“Storytelling is a way to connect and build relationships” Saskatoon, a name derived from the Cree word for the saskatoon berry, misâskwatômin, was established in 1883 by a temperance group from Ontario who were looking to establish a dry community. When visiting the Whitecap Dakota First Nations (historically known as Moose Woods First Nation), Linklater remembers this story of John Lake, the leader of that temperance group.

KNOWLEDGE KEEPER
Lyndon J. Linklater, Indigenous Relations Advisor at the Remai Modern, offers Indigenous awareness training to groups. He’s offered opening and closing prayers and smudging ceremonies, and has facilitated and taught the meaning behind group activities such as birch bark basket making and red willow weaving.
In the late 19th century, John Lake consulted with the Dakota people in the area, choosing his settlement on the advice of Chief White Cap. This settlement is now the Saskatoon neighbourhood of Nutana, on the east side South Saskatchewan River. Saskatoon is now a flourishing city with a young and vibrant population – for Linklater, the story reflects the positive outcomes of developing good relationships and inter-connected communities.
Storytelling is a key link in sharing knowledge; it is one of the uniting factors of the people of Turtle Island, says Linklater. For him, this story reflected the importance of developing good relations. When we acknowledge and understand our shared histories, both positive and harmful, we can build new interconnected relationships that enrich the present and serve the future. “We have to understand and learn about the past so that we can understand the present to plan for the future”.
When you visit Saskatoon, engaging in Indigenous culture builds a strong community linked by stories. Whether you immerse yourself in the culture at the world’s longest ongoing archeological dig, stay at a nationally recognized Indigenous owned resort, or spend the day on the battlegrounds of the Métis Resistance, discovering Saskatoon means immersing yourself in these vibrant cultures. With no shortage of experiences, you and your family can be immersed in the rich landscape, heritage, and future of Treaty 6.

On track to becoming a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Wanuskewin is just minutes from downtown. An expansion program designed to boost seated capacity by 350 guests was completed in 2020.
“There is a spirit here that is hard to describe. Wanuskewin is a Cree word meaning “Seeking Peace of Mind”, and that sense of calm, and serenity is something that our guests all remark on,” says Andrew McDonald, Director of Marketing and Communication.
“Every season is magical here at the park and so whether you are inside the building enjoying the view of the snowcapped banks of the Opimihaw Valley during the winter, or taking a break and visiting the bison herd in the summer months there is always something to learn and experience. Our Indigenous Art Galleries, Cultural Exhibits, and Guided Tours are a wonderful way to experience all of the Indigenous Cultures within Treaty 6 Territory.”

This site is an ongoing symbol of the beauty and resilience of the Métis culture.
There are Pow Wows held throughout the year in the Saskatoon area. Pow Wows are a vibrant celebration of Indigenous culture and many are open to everyone. If you are attending a Pow Wow, be a mindful participant –– respect the opening prayer ceremony and the unique cultural traditions of each nation, dress modestly, ask before taking photos, respect the dancer’s regalia, support Indigenous vendors and artisans, and do not bring drugs or alcohol.
