And this year, we are thrilled to introduce the inaugural season of the Saskatoon Berries Baseball Team, adding another layer of excitement to our sports tapestry. As we revel in the present, we honor the past. This land, with its profound history, whispers tales of Indigenous people who have called it home for millennia. Charlie Clark MAYOR OF SASKATOON

“The warmth of our people is what makes visiting here most memorable”

Welcome to Saskatoon, on Treaty 6 Territory and the traditional homeland of the Métis. Our city is a hub for this region. We lead the country in both economic and population growth, providing resources and solutions needed in a rapidly changing world. We are shaped by the natural beauty of the Meewasin River Valley. We have diverse cultural experiences, worldclass festivals, museums, and many unique shopping districts and fantastic local restaurants for you to enjoy. On top of the beauty and culture of our city, the warmth of our people is what makes visiting here most memorable and makes me most proud to be part of this community. I truly hope you enjoy your stay and get to experience some of what Saskatoon has to offer.

7

Lyndon Linklater, a traditional knowledge keeper and storyteller in Treaty 6 territory, was able to meet and share stories with us and convey the importance of good relations. After giving tobacco, a shared way to communicate respect and care to Indigenous elders, we began with the history of Saskatoon.

Tansi, On behalf of the seven member nations that make up the Saskatoon Tribal Council (STC), I would like to welcome you to Saskatoon. Saskatoon is part of Treaty 6 Territory. These lands have a rich history, with significant contributions from First Nations peoples. Our people have called this region home since time immemorial; in the spirit of reconciliation, we invite you to take in everything Saskatoon has to offer. From the natural beauty of the South Saskatchewan River to our many festivals, including our yearly Pow Wow, you are surrounded by welcoming people, places, and experiences.

Mark Arcand

As we begin to heal towards the future, we First Nations people want to open the discussion to all when it comes to reconciliation. During your time here, STC hopes your experience in Saskatoon is enjoyable, informative, and inspires you to keep coming back.

DAKOTA DUNES

Located on Treaty 6

“Storytelling is a way to connect and build relationships” Saskatoon, a name derived from the Cree word for the saskatoon berry, misâskwatômin, was established in 1883 by a temperance group from Ontario who were looking to establish a dry community. When visiting the Whitecap Dakota First Nations (historically known as Moose Woods First Nation), Linklater remembers this story of John Lake, the leader of that temperance group. In the late 19th century, John Lake consulted with the Dakota people in the area, choosing his settlement on the advice of Chief White Cap. This settlement is now the Saskatoon neighbourhood of Nutana, on the east side South Saskatchewan River. Saskatoon is now a flourishing city with a young and vibrant population – for Linklater, the story reflects the positive outcomes of developing good relationships and inter-connected communities.

Storytelling is a key link in sharing knowledge; it is one of the uniting factors of the people of Turtle Island, says Linklater.

For him, this story reflected the importance of developing good relations. When we acknowledge and understand our shared histories, both positive and harmful, we can build new interconnected relationships that enrich the present and serve the future.

“We have to understand and learn about the past so that we can understand the present to plan for the future” When you visit Saskatoon, engaging in Indigenous culture builds a strong community linked by stories. Whether you immerse yourself in the culture at the world’s longest ongoing archeological dig, stay at a nationally recognized Indigenousowned resort, or spend the day on the battlegrounds of the Métis Resistance, discovering Saskatoon means immersing yourself in these vibrant cultures. With no shortage of experiences, you and your family can be immersed in the rich landscape, heritage, and future of Treaty 6.

The name Saskatoon comes from the Cree word Misâskwatôminihk which means “at the place of many Saskatoon berries” (a berry we highly recommend taste testing). Saskatoon has one of the highest number of restaurants per capita in the country. Our culinary scene has received national and international attention. Saskatchewan is the only province in Canada that doesn’t observe Daylight Savings Time. Our local timezone is Central Standard Time (CST). Speaking of daylight: we’re one of the sunniest places in Canada—even during wintertime. Saskatchewan enjoys 2,300 hours of beautiful, bright sunshine each year. Saskatoon has four sister cities around the world: Cologne (Germany), Tampere (Finland), Shijiazhuang (China), and Umeå (Sweden).

Preparing for Arrival Saskatchewan is a climate of exhilarating extremes. Temperatures can dip as low as -40°C over the winter months and rise as high as +35°C on sunny summer days. To help you make the most of your time in Saskatoon, make sure you’re prepared by adding these items to your packing list: Beach essentials for soaking up the sun along the banks of the South Saskatchewan River Comfortable shoes for shopping the city’s Broadway, Riversdale, and Downtown districts A light raincoat and umbrella in case you find yourself caught in a signature Saskatchewan thunderstorm (although taking shelter inside one of our many critically-acclaimed restaurants is a great alternative, too.)

COLD WEATHER CHECKLIST

Saskatoon was established in 1883 on Treaty Six Territory stewarded by the Cree, Dene, Blackfoot, Salteaux, and Nakota Sioux. It is also home to many Métis settlements.

WARM WEATHER CHECKLIST

Did you know

Saskatoon is a city full of discovery. Here are a few facts you may be surprised to learn about us:

Water-resistant boots with a thick pair of socks to slip into a pair of snowshoes before hitting the trails at Wanuskewin Heritage Park A warm coat with windproof layer to protect against Saskatchewan’s biting windchill Layers! From a woolly base layer to a warm coat, mitts and, of course, a toque, the more layers you have the longer you can spend exploring our winter wonderland.

Whether you’re here for business or leisure, make sure to kick off your visit by stopping by the Discover Saskatoon Visitor Centre, conveniently situated in the heart of downtown at #100-145 First Ave North. 10

Pow Wows

Dakota Dunes Resort

Home to Canada’s longest running archaeological dig, Wanuskewin is a UNESCO-shortlisted site with more than 6,400 years of history. Wander through the facilities art galleries, take in a live dance performance, shop Indigenous-made goods, and savour Indigenous flavours at Wanuskewin’s in-house restaurant. Can’t make it out to Wanuskewin Heritage Park? Explore their gift shop in the heart of the Broadway District.

A vibrant celebration of Indigenous culture, Pow Wows are held throughout the year in the Saskatoon area. If you are attending a Pow Wow (many are open to the public), be a mindful participant: respect the opening prayer ceremony and the unique cultural traditions of each nation, dress modestly, ask before taking photos, respect the dancer’s regalia, support Indigenous vendors and artisans, and do not bring drugs or alcohol. If you’d like to ask questions of dancers or elders, offering tobacco as a gift is a sign of respect.

Located on the traditional Whitecap Dakota Unceded Territory, this gorgeous, modern resort features views of the rolling prairies. A short drive from Saskatoon’s city centre, it’s the perfect backdrop for a relaxing, rejuvenating stay. Dakota Dunes Resort features winter and summer adventures, luxurious amenities, and many Indigenous cultural experiences.
