What is the 1G Graduate Visa?
• Stamp 1G indicates that you have finished your studies and have permission to search for employment under the Third Level Graduate Programme.
• The student may be issued with permission to remain in Ireland initially for 12 months which will be renewed for a further period of 12 months.
• No work permit is required when availing of the Third Level Graduate Scheme, often referred to as the Graduate visa.
Conditions of Stamp 1G
You must hold a current Stamp 2 student immigration permission
You can order a letter from Student Records on your student portal only after your complete and final results are formally released.
You must apply within six months of getting your final results
Must present evidence of the final award being attained – you must request a letter from Student Records
Upon re-registration (after the first 12 months) you will be expected to provide evidence that you have been looking for employment
Conditions of the Stamp 1G
Periods spent on Stamp 1G counts as reckonable residence for the purpose of making an application for Citizenship.
Must not have already exceeded the seven or eight year limit on your permission as a non-EEA student in the State
If you wish to continue working after Stamp 1G expires, you will need to switch to a work permit.
You are not permitted to operate a business or be self-employed.
1G Graduate Skills Visa vs Critical Skills
Visa
• You pay your own fee (€300)
• The type of work undertaken is not limited to specific employment categories or salary levels unlike employment permits.
Critical Skills Visa
• Employers may offer to sponsor a critical skills visa.
• They will take care of the paperwork & registration.
• Expected to stay with your employer for 12 months.
• Be aware that if you are made redundant than you cannot switch back to a 1G visa.
• Be aware that if you are made redundant you cannot switch to the 1G. You will need to find an employer that will take over the sponsorship of the critical skills visa.

How do I Apply?
• If you want to renew your Irish Residence Permit (IRP) or change your permission type, you will be required to apply online through the Irish Immigration Service Online Portal.
• Online applications for renewal of registration, including when changing stamp category, are accepted up to 12 weeks prior to expiry to allow sufficient time for processing.

2. Select the Registration Renewal form.
3. Begin your application.
4. Check the required documents and upload.
5. Pay the fee (€300).

Required Documents for Stamp 1G
Please note:
THE STUDENT MUST BE IN IRELAND TO MAKE AN APPLICATION.
THE APPLICATION FOR STAMP 1G SHOULD BE MADE WITHIN 6 MONTHS OF RECEIVING YOUR QUALIFICATION.
THERE WILL BE NO NEED FOR THE STUDENT TO ATTEND AN APPOINTMENT IN PERSON IN DUBLIN.
PROCESSING TIMES ARE BETWEEN 1 AND 2 MONTHS.
THE STUDENT MUST OBEY THE WORKING CONDITIONS OF THEIR PREVIOUS STAMP 2 PERMISSION UNTIL THEY HAVE RECEIVED CONFIRMATION OF THEIR STAMP 1G PERMISSION.
After Submitting your Application
You will receive an automatic email outlining your application number and payment receipt.
All applicants are processed in order of the date they submitted an application. You can view the date that are being processed at this link. There is a 1–2 month processing time currently.
If more information/further documentation is required, you will be notified of what is required and how to submit it.
If the application is successful, an email will issue to you informing you that a new IRP card will be sent to your home address within the next 15 business days.
If the application is unsuccessful, an email will issue to you outlining the reasons why. Any money paid will be returned within 10 business days.
What happens while I am waiting to switch from Stamp 2 to 1G
• You are subject to Stamp 2 conditions until you change to Stamp 1G – even if you are no longer a student. This means you can work up to 20 hours a week during term time and up to 40 hours a week in the holidays - June to September inclusive and from 15 December to 15 January.
• Students can request an extension with immigration on your stamp 2, but this is up to the discretion of the immigration officer.
• Email immigrationsupport@justice.ie and they may be able to assist once you have submitted an application and have an application number.
Working in Ireland
• A PPS number (tax number) is required otherwise you will be charged an emergency rate of tax.
• Apply online at www.mygovid.ie or go to the Department of Social Protection on Hanover street.
• No appointment necessary just check office hours.
