FOOD MARKETING & ENTREPRENEURSHIP
COURSE OUTLINE BSc (Hons) Food Marketing & Entrepreneurship offers a unique combination of business and science, providing graduates with the skills to work in an exciting, fast-paced industry.
COURSE OUTLINE BSc (Honours) Course No. CK213
During Years 1-3 you will study various modules across a range of disciplines including Food Business, Marketing, Food Policy, Management, Economics, Microbiology, Accounting, Law, and Nutrition. This will provide you with a well-rounded education which will prepare you for a career in the dynamic food industry and other sectors, by nurturing innovation and entrepreneurship skills, by building knowledge of the food and nutrition sciences, by developing skills to assess business viability, and by promoting an understanding of consumer market trends and marketing strategies. Year 3 will also offer opportunity to avail of a 6-month placement, to further develop practical skills. In final year, in addition to studying core modules across business disciplines you will also have the opportunity to choose modules which most align with your interests and anticipated career path. All business and food science subjects will be taught at an introductory level at first, so do not be concerned if you have not taken science or business subjects at the Leaving Certificate. Graduates will learn skills in strategic decision-making, innovation, enterprise and knowledge management, delivered through an integrated range of subjects that support successful personal and entrepreneurial business development. The course is designed to consider the challenges faced by businesses and expose students to the concepts, theories and experience of practice that explain how the business world operates. Practical applications in the form of group and individual projects, along with placement and study abroad opportunities will be an integral part of your learning experience. The programme is built on UCC’s international reputation in food education and research and taught by lecturers who are internationally recognised in their field of expertise.

FOOD MARKETING & ENTREPRENEURSHIP WORK PLACEMENT AND ERASMUS BSc (Honours) Course No. CK213
WORK PLACEMENT An integral part of this programme is the sixmonth work placement taken during third year. The industry-based placement offers an excellent opportunity to draw upon and apply your knowledge and skills in performing tasks in specific work contexts. It will enhance your work capabilities, develop new competencies, and demonstrate how knowledge acquired in class meets practice. It will inspire and motivate you throughout your final year while giving you the chance to build industry contacts and form relationships with key industry personnel. This can be particularly helpful when seeking referees.
ERASMUS Alternatively, students can apply to spend the six-months studying abroad in either a German, Dutch, Italian or French university. As well as providing an engaging learning and social experience, studying abroad will provide insight into other markets and cultures, further boosting employability, particularly in organisations which rely heavily on export markets.

FOOD MARKETING & ENTREPRENEURSHIP STUDENT PROFILES BSc (Honours) Course No. CK213
STUDENT PROFILE KATE MADDEN, QUERCUS SCHOLAR FME 4 I chose UCC because I wanted to have a fresh beginning. Having attended secondary school in the middle of Dublin City, I wanted to be open to new experiences by moving out of my comfort zone away from my friends and the city I was familiar with. UCC also has the strongest food science school in Ireland while also offering my dream course with 30% food and nutritional sciences and 70% food marketing and business modules, the BSc in Food Marketing and Entrepreneurship. As well as the endless support I have received from my lecturers and professors, the support I have gained from my classmates and friends has encouraged and motivated me to strive in my education. I enjoy going to a quiet space to focus on my studies and the Boole Library has multiple facilities including referencing electives and guest speakers which helps me strengthen both my academic and personal development. When asked what it means to be a UCC student, I believe it is understanding that university life goes much further than studying and passing exams. Taking part in the endless extra-curricular activities, clubs and societies makes UCC students who they are. Although there may be over 22,000 students in UCC, not a day goes by where you will not pass somebody you know. This was a very important aspect to me as I only knew three people moving down, my two cousins and a family friend. Being a Quercus scholar gives you the opportunities that most students would not experience. As a student running and growing a full-time business, balancing full time education can also be difficult. With the help of Quercus, the endless mentorship and advice makes it possible to coincide with the flexible college-business life that I aspired to gain while studying at UCC. As well as this, gaining the opportunity to meet many like-minded people makes it much easier to succeed and accomplish your goals.
