President’s Address Fáilte! My name is Mary O’Donnell and I am the President here at UCC Societies. Firstly, I’d like to extend a massive welcome to UCC, one of the most diverse and inclusive campuses in the country! Here in UCC, we pride ourselves on giving students the best university experience in the country, going way beyond lectures and tutorials. We have more than 100 societies spanning every interest you could possibly think of - from knitting to online gaming, law to medical research, psychology to film, there really is something for everybody! Every single one of our societies is run by students for students, so you can be sure there are some like-minded individuals at the helm. And who knows, maybe that could be you running your dream society some day! Getting involved with societies offers you a whole host of opportunities, from making friends outside of your course to going on trips in Ireland and abroad, as well as organising small and large events right here in UCC! You can really get some once in a lifetime experiences just by signing up! We’ve had societies like Choral who have represented UCC in international competitions in Italy, Cancer Society who organise the UCC Relay for Life every year to raise funds for the Irish Cancer Society and Surgeon Noonan who send teams of student doctors to Africa to help develop lives and healthcare! If you want to get a taste of what Societies have to offer, check out our social media pages! You can find us on Facebook at UCC Societies, or on Twitter and Instagram @uccsocieties! We’ve got photos, videos and so much more that will give you some of the highlights of the amazing times you could be having this year! Maybe you’ll come across a hobby you already love or you might discover something completely new that takes your fancy! You can sign up to as many as you like so don’t be afraid to give something new a go! Feel like we’re missing something? If the society you want to join doesn’t exist yet, you can always set one up! If you and your friends share an interest that you think would make a perfect society, get in touch with us and we’ll show you how you can go about creating a brand new one! Societies give students the opportunity to make new friends, learn new skills and make incredible memories that will last long after you’ve left UCC! There really is something for everyone, so make sure you don’t miss out! I look forward to seeing you at some of our fantastic events! Is mise le meas, Mary O’Donnell Societies President 2021/22

Peer Support Throughout your first year at UCC you will receive support and guidance from your Peer Support Leader (PSL). Your PSL is an experienced UCC student, trained to assist you in your transition into the university and becoming part of the UCC community. Nothing is too small to ask your Peer Support Leader about.
What can a Peer Support Leader do for me? PSLs are there to listen, advise and guide you through your first year journey. They can meet you one to one, listen to your concerns and give you the benefit of their experience. PSLs won’t judge you and anything you discuss will remain completely confidential. They can offer practical help in dealing with issues that may arise. If your PSL can’t help you directly they will know where in the university to point you.
How can I make contact? You don’t have to, they will contact you! Your PSL will email you in the first two weeks of term to see how you are settling in and periodically throughout the year after this. Should you have any questions about the programme you can email the Peer Support Office at peersupport@ucc.ie. Your query will be treated confidentially and based on what you need.

SOCIETIES Accounting Finance The UCC Accounting and Finance Society is one of CUBS’ largest and most involved societies. Though our membership consists primarily of those studying the BSc Finance or BSc Accounting degrees, our society is open to all with an interest in the financial world. Our society was founded to bring together students to help them understand and network their way through the world of accounting and finance. Through past UCC alumni and our sponsor, PwC, this society has built up a vast network of contacts throughout the years in all areas of accounting and finance such as investment banking, market intelligence, corporate finance, fund accounting, financial accounting and further into more specialised areas. The Accounting & Finance Society can be broken down into 3 sub-committees: A&F, Student Managed Fund (SMF) and the Finance Forum. Each year brings events and speakers to aid members in engaging with financial matters and employers and improve their understanding of the complex industry. Our close association with the Student Managed Fund and CUBs Conference provide excellent opportunities to learn real skills from practise and from industry leaders. Our society recognises the importance of all sides of networking and each year incorporates social nights, a tag rugby event, various inter-societal events and our society ball. Our society is a great way for those with an interest in financial matters to meet like-minded people, develop their personal and professional skills and get involved in the beating heart of UCC.
Alzheimers You can’t turn a corner these days without hearing the words Alzheimer’s or dementia. It’s also true that most of us know of someone who has experienced these diseases. If you want to make a difference in your community in the fight against Alzheimer’s and dementia, join the UCC Alzheimer’s Society! We are proud to be the first society at any third level institution in Ireland to represent this disease. We are an action committed group that holds fundraisers while raising awareness about dementia. In addition, we give family members and/or patients impacted by the Alzheimer’s disease an opportunity to educate others. Guest lecturers from a variety of disciplines are invited to inform the public of therapeutic breakthroughs and other advances in the treatment of dementia at many of our events hosted throughout each school year. All proceeds are donated to the Bessboro Day Care Center, which provides dementia-specific care in Cork City. This year we hope, as I’m sure most of you do, to hold some in-person events again if possible. We have much planned already and our amazing committee members are already hard at work! All are welcome to attend any of our events!

AMSI Being a 1st year in medicine is never easy: a truckload of knowledge is dropped into your hands and your task is to navigate through it in time for assessments. But is there anything else beyond repeatedly hitting the textbooks when it comes to protecting the health of the masses? The Association of Medical Students Ireland (AMSI), part of the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA), endeavours to promote all issues with respect to medicine and health beyond the structures of medical school curricula, in the domains of Public Health, Sexual & Reproductive Health, Medical Education, Human Rights & Peace and Professional Exchanges. We work to engage the community, medical student or otherwise, in a wide variety of activities. Catch us promoting aspects of physical and mental health for secondary school students during our annual Healthy Heroes, tutoring students in Direct Provision centres, a sexual health symposium in collaboration with other Irish medical schools, and even delivering a series of fun events and initiatives during Our Med Minds to promote positive mental health amongst medical students! If you wish to expand your horizons on global thinking, learn more about the challenges faced in healthcare from a broader perspective, or simply be part of an entity that is far larger than what you can imagine, then AMSI is excited to welcome you on board.
Animal Welfare Our society is all about animals! We want to connect UCC students, who are interested in animal rights and their welfare. Our main goal is to improve the welfare of animals in all forms, which we hope to achieve by fundraising for charities, spreading awareness of the various issues, and educating people about how to live cruelty-free lives. While 2020 did not allow us to do our in-person events, we shifted online, connecting with other animal enthusiasts while staying apart. We hope to return to campus for the 2021/2022 academic year and hopefully bring back some of our flagship events, such as inviting kittens and puppies in aid of Munster Lost and Found! Regardless if you’re an animal welfare activist or just a person looking to share their pet photos with like-minded people, we’re sure that you’ll fit right in!

Archaeological The Archaeological society is for everyone and anyone – you do not need to study archaeology or have any knowledge of it. The only prerequisite is to have an interest! The society provides the opportunity to introduce and enhance archaeological knowledge and it is a great opportunity to meet likeminded individuals with an interest in the past. From Bronze Age stone circles in West Cork to Viking burials in Ireland’s great cities, from prehistoric megalithic tombs to the Industrial Revolution, we have it all! Throughout the year, we host regular lectures on relevant and exciting research by internationally recognised experts. We also have regular social events, including Archaeochats, charity quizzes and more. The highlight of our year is an overnight field trip where we visit a variety of archaeological sites and monuments. We aim to hold as many in-person events as possible this year, in compliance with government and university guidelines. If any of the above appeals to you, please consider joining the Archaeological society. We welcome all incoming students and look forward to meeting you!
Biomedical The UCC Biomedical Science Society was founded to give those with an interest in medical science a platform to connect with like-minded students and professionals. Since the society was founded in 2015, we have gone from strength to strength. We focus a lot of our efforts on promoting the importance of career education and mentoring within science to allow our members to become familiar with all of the opportunities that are available to them, and encouraging them to make the most of their time in college, but we also host loads of social events where we can all get to know each other and take a break from the study! Last year, some of our highlights were a week long COVID Conference, where we heard from Dr. Cillian De Gascun, Paul Reid and other experts who are working hard to end the pandemic, our annual Can U Help CUH? charity day, which raised more than €1300 for and scientific writing workshops in collaboration with the ACSLM. We also won awards both in UCC and nationally for our work throughout the year. This year, we hope to bring back some on campus events and are working behind the scenes to have our biggest and best year yet! We can’t wait to meet you all when you come to UCC!

Chemical Here at ChemSoc, we have all the solutions. Socialising and meeting new people, academic talks, career and industry advice. Whatever you’re looking for, ChemSoc is where you’ll find it. Our year is jam packed with events for the whole School of Chemistry and beyond. Social evenings for 1st years, undergraduates, postgraduates, and a healthy number of quiz nights, we are the beating heart of the Kane building. Our student supports, academic talks and industry workshops are a huge help to anyone pursuing a chemistry degree, or just those who would like to know more about why things fizz, bang and pop! All your favourite events will be returning bigger and better than ever this year, including Blow Your Mind Week, PubHD and the John Tobin Quiz. We will also be hosting the biggest night of the School of Chemistry social calendar; The Chemistry Ball. So whether you’re new to the world of college chemistry, or fancy a few fascinating evenings with great people, keep an eye out for details of all our amazing events on our Instagram, ucc_chemical_society
Choral Founded in 1937, UCC Choral Society is one of the largest, most active and successful societies in the college. Rehearsals take place every Tuesday from 7pm to 9pm amd everyone is welcome to come along. We encourage all walks of life and promote a safe and enjoyable space to create music and develop new friendships. Every year, we hold two concerts, one in each semester. At the end of Semester One, we hold our Carols by Candlelight concert. This runs for 3 nights in the Honan Chapel on campus and is always a sell out show. For many people, it marks the beginning of the festive season. At the end of Semester Two, we hold our Sounds of Spring concert. This is a one night event in aid of a different charity each year. Due to current restrictions, our usual in-person events may look a little different but we can still guarantee that the society will produce unforgettable experiences for all involved- both members and audience alike! So join Ucc Choral society whether you love music and singing or even if you just want to meet new people. Friends for life have been made in this Society and we hope that tradition stays for a long time!

Christian Union The Christian Union Society (CU) is a fun, vibrant and friendly society, dedicated to sharing God’s love and the AMAZING news of Jesus Christ to every single person in UCC. The CU is also a place where Christians can meet and be encouraged in their faiths and walks with Jesus. We are a very active society with multiple events happening each week. Our main weekly meet ups usually consist of a time of worship and music, a talk given by a guest speaker which answers an important question about Christianity and God, and some social time afterwards (usually involving tea and cookies!). Our bible study small groups and prayer meetings also run every week. We also plan on hosting multiple once-off events throughout the year such as socials, pizza parties, our annual carol service, collaborations with other societies, an inter CU worship night, a week of outreach events in the Spring, and more! Oh and make sure to keep an eye out for us outside the Boole Library. Every week we give out free tea and coffee and we’re always up for a friendly chat! As you can see from our lovely picture, last year our events were quite restricted. This year though, we promise to take every opportunity to return to normal in-person events as long as it is safe to do so. Anyway, whoever you are, no matter what your beliefs or background, you are 100% welcome to the Christian Union. Can’t wait to see you there!
Clinical Therapies Hi everyone! Welcome to the clinical therapies society! The clinical therapies society is for all students involved in clinical therapy courses including undergraduate Speech and Language Therapy and Occupational Therapy, as well as Masters in Audiology, Physiotherapy and Hearing Balance and Communication. The aim of our society is to promote clinical therapies and increase awareness of the allied health professionals throughout UCC and amongst the student population campus wide. The clinical therapies society endeavours to provide members with academic talks, training, and professional opportunities. In addition, we aim to create social opportunities for students and promote positive relationships across disciplines. The past year in person events have not been possible, but our society managed to create a vibrant presence online and run numerus successful campaigns including the Lámh sign language campaign, teletherapy series, fundraisers for local charities and collaborations with other societies. It is an important aim of our society to create social opportunities for our members, and we run different events throughout the year to facilitate this. To name a few; our monthly ‘Tea and Chats’ informal social events and our ‘Resource Sharing’ night, where students shared useful placement resources while meeting students from different year groups. We hope to continue to grow our online social media platforms this year but also return to in person events across campus and continue to grow our society. We would love to welcome new students to the clinical therapies society this year and we look forward to welcoming you all in September!

Comedy The UCC Comedy Society is back and we’re healing the world with comedy! There may be a global pandemic, but never fear, we at UCC Comedy possess the greatest and most effective medicine of all… Laughter! Our mission is to provide the UCC community with the opportunity to develop comedy skills, share in the enjoyment of comedy via various media, and cultivate the growth of comedy in UCC. Spreading infectious laughter throughout UCC will be our number one priority throughout the coming year and we hope YOU (yes, you specifically) can join in and help us. Be sure to keep an eye out for us during the year as we present a delightful array of weird and (hopefully) wonderful events! We run stand-up and sketch comedy workshops, host numerous comedy events such as stand-up shows, open mic nights, screenings, and much much more! So, if you’re interested in studying the commerce of comedy (funny business) , aspire to be a comedian, or just have funny bones then you should look no further than the UCC Comedy Society! Alternatively, if you’re not interested in any of those things…. Well….. I don’t know what to say to you… Why are you still reading this? All joking aside, we wish to extend a warm welcome to all incoming students. We can’t wait to meet you! If you have any questions (or good jokes), feel free to email us, follow us on Instagram @ucccomedy, join our discord server or simply send a healthy carrier pigeon.
Cooperative Do you have an interest in mutual aid, activism, or DIY activities? The UCC Cooperative Society was founded on these pillars and is looking for members with similar interests and goals! We have an ever-expanding library of books ranging from political-theory to practical endeavours open for all members to utilize as well as events focussed on expanding the practical knowledge of students living independently. There’ll be plenty of chances to network, socialise and have a laugh alongside an active committee and a growing community. In order to best reflect our commitment to our democratic/co-operative values as a society we take a particular approach to the society, one which ensures member engagement and committee accountability so that everyone has a voice in what we do and how we do it - exemplified by our Cooperative Townhall events. We’ll even help you get in touch with other societies you may be interested in as well, through a myriad of brilliant collaborations we have planned for the academic year ahead. If you have a desire for real change, or just want to brush up on your DIY be sure to check us out by heading along to one of our events or e-mailing us at cooperative@uccsocieties.ie

Dental UCC’s Dental Society is the society with the biggest smile! We are dedicated to our dental and dental hygiene students to ensure they have the best possible experience while also helping students deal with the stresses of being in the dentistry program. We host many exciting events such as welcome back parties, sporting events, and of course Dentball! Since dentistry can be overwhelming for students, we are here to support you by doing our best to provide you with the resources and information you need throughout the program. We hold events such as conferences and book sales, while also hoping to bring you lots of exciting speakers and talks this year! Dentsoc is so excited to welcome the incoming first years and the rest of the course back to campus and the dental hospital. We know it can be stressful settling in, so we’ve implemented our buddy system for students who are set up with an upper year to reach out to for a smooth transition. Be sure to attend our welcome back events to help you get acquainted with your year, and feel free to reach out to us anytime. We are looking forward to this upcoming year to bring dental students together, and to create a welcoming and fun atmosphere in the dentistry program. We can’t wait to see you at our upcoming events!
Disability Activism and Awareness
Over the coming year we want to make our society more sociable than it has been before! We want to create a safe place for all students, especially those who have disability/illness. University can be a tough place and a hard adjustment but for those with disabilities it is even tougher particularly the social aspect. Our society is a safe place for people to vent while connecting with like minded students (sometimes over free food). If you’re interested in making our university a more accessible and equal place for all while having fun doing it then please consider joining our society! Find us on social media @UCCDAASoc or send us an email at disabilityactivism@uccsocieties.ie

Dramat Formed in 1905, UCC Dramat Society is concerned with promoting and facilitating many forms of theatre around the UCC campus. Through our multiple mainstage productions each year, we give all students the opportunity to gain experience in every aspect of theatre, from acting, stage management, tech and much more. As well as full scale productions, we also host weekly improv workshops, in which long lasting friendships are formed, many laughs are had and the prompts are...interesting. As they say, there’s no better place to get to know people than in the theatre and UCC Dramat is a great representation of that, with a sense of family running deep year after year. We are proud to have some famous faces as alumni, such as Siobhán McSweeney and Graham Norton, to name but a few, and hopefully some more to come, judging by the talent of our current members! New faces are always welcomed with open arms, so keep an eye on our socials for upcoming events and be sure to come along!
Emergency Care Welcome to UCC! Societies are an exciting way to engage with your new classmates and to meet others beyond your course or year with similar interests. The Emergency Care Society (ECS) seeks to foster an interest in Pre-Hospital and Emergency Medicine among students from all courses. Throughout the year we aim to arrange a number of practical workshops with local doctors, tutoring students in how to manage a variety of acute medical and surgical emergencies, as they would present to the emergency department. We tailor our sessions to make them easily accessible to all, from beginners to final years and beyond! Our unique practical, simulated approach to learning offers students the chance to practise their clinical skills receiving feedback from local doctors, while bridging the gap between lectures and clinical practice. At the ECS, we are always on the lookout for enjoyable, innovative educational experiences. We arrange an annual SimWars Competition, in which teams of 6 compete to manage sudden medical emergencies, similar to those experienced in hospitals. Successful teams will then have the chance to represent UCC in the national competition against other medical schools around Ireland. Each year students will be offered the chance to travel to Mayo to partake in a weekend Wilderness Medicine course, learning how to manage a variety of medical emergencies on mountains and at sea. We hope to see you at some of our events this year and look forward to sharing skills which will last a lifetime!

Engineers Without Borders Engineers Without Borders (EWB) is an international organization attempting to bridge the gap between academia, industry and NGOs. It is a humanitarian organisation that assists developing and disaster-stricken countries across the world when in need. As a student branch of EWB we aim to educate our members on the work of the organisation and enhance their skill sets as humanitarians. EWB-UCC organised many events this year with the main themes of community engagement, sustainability, and charity fundraising. To kick off the online academic year, EWB participated in a Sustainability in Healthcare Talk with the Environmental Society, Medical Research and Technology Society. We held an outreach programme with several schools to promote engineering as a CAO choice. EWB also conducted the annual Mapathon in conjunction with MSF, where we mapped vulnerable areas to help relief workers. The society took part in various raffles to raise money for important charities. These raffles were completed with UCC SÁMH and LGBTQ Society. EWB also worked with MRT and 6 other societies, UCC Societies Executive, UCC Students Union, UCC Student Health and Irish Scientific Advisory Group (ISAG) to create a student-led, educational campaign Covid-19 Myth Busting Campaign bringing clarity to UCC students regarding Covid-19 virus and vaccine ambiguities.

Environmental UCC Environmental Society, or as the cool kids call, “EnviroSoc”, is a society for all those from little to great interest in any and all areas of the Environment, Environmentalism and Sustainability. We’ve run all types of events varying from activities like litter picking and sustainable fashion workshops, to more informative affairs such as our Annual Climate Conference. There is never a dull moment with our society and we strive toward making our campus and college a more sustainable and eco-friendly environment for all its inhabitants – students, faculty, animals and plants alike! For more information on this type of improvement, you should check our UCC Green Campus! Whether you are a full blown Eco-Warrior, or simply curious about sustainability and the environment – we have something for everyone. All our events are inclusive and hey, you never know, you might learn a thing or two while also having a blast of a time! We are, in reality, just a bunch of students all wanting to do a little something in an ever-changing, exciting and scary big world. So if something like what’s mentioned above tickles-your-fancy, then we would absolutely love to have you join our Society and become another cool kid in “EnviroSoc”!
Europa UCC Europa Society is a society that thrives to promote all things European. We aim to cover a range of topics from current events happening in Europe and the EU as well as enjoying Eurovision nights and all various European cultures through events. Fáilte Refugees “Fáilte” is the word for “welcome” in the Irish language. Therefore as the name suggests, the purpose of UCC Fáilte Refugees Society is to welcome refugees, asylum seekers and migrants to our college, city and country. Making connections with refugee activists in Ireland and around the world is something we’re passionate about, and empowering people whose stories and ideas aren’t always heard is our priority. In 2020-21 we were awarded “Best Mental Health Promoting Event” by the Board of Irish College Societies for our project “Art in Action” which saw the artworks of children living in direct provision centers brought to campus and displayed in the Glucksman art gallery. Our efforts in the fields of “Community Engagement” and “Innovation” were also acknowledged by nominations in the UCC Societies’ Stars Awards 2020-21. In 2021 we succeed in publishing “Aistear” our first publication and anthology of writing and art work which brought together insights and outlooks on migration from Cork based creatives. One of the highlights of our calendar year is always Refugee Week in Semester 2 where we hold conferences, social and informative events, and fundraisers. Our committee is made up of diverse students from across courses in UCC who all share a common goal of making Ireland a more equitable and welcoming place. If empathy, creativity and social action are part of who you are, you’ll feel right at home as part of the UCC Fáilte Refugees community.

Feminist The Feminist Society (or FemSoc as we’re better known as) is a super welcoming and inclusive society! We are really active in fighting for gender equality and promoting feminism both on campus and in the wider community. We hold really amazing events and work on different campaigns throughout the year. Our annual FemPower Conference is a super fun festival where we invite incredible feminists to come and talk on different topics and provide exciting workshops, everything from intersectional and political feminism to plant-care workshops! It is always a really exciting and inspirational event. We hold a production of Vagina Monologues every year as well, that everyone is invited to join and support. It is a really powerful production that everyone who takes part in loves! Some of our campaigns at the moment include introducing consent classes for everyone in UCC and fighting period poverty on campus. We work hard to help make our campus a more equal place while also having lots of fun! We welcome everyone to join us in making a change and having a good time while doing so! We want everyone to feel safe and welcome both in our society and at UCC. If you’re interested in feminism and gender equality FemSoc is the perfect place to get involved and make some incredible friends! Every year brings fantastic new ideas and projects and we cannot wait to show you everything we have planned for this year!
FLAC The primary aim here at UCC FLAC (Free Legal Advice Centre) is to give UCC students access to professional, confidential, and helpful legal advice on a range of issues they might have- from employment to tenancy issues. We bring in barristers and solicitors to speak with students and help to make the legal system a little less scary and a lot more accessible. We will also host a range of educational events on all areas of the law and society- topics like the environment, direct provision, domestic violence, and human rights amongst others. All of these events are open to both law and non-law students. We welcome specialists in their field at all of these events who provide insight into their on-the-ground work in these areas, so make sure to come along and see what they have to say. There are plenty of ways to join us in providing access to justice as a first year- you can apply to join our committee or the conference sub-committee to be at the centre of the organisation of our events. You can also attend any of our talks and seminars, in-person or online, and sign up as a ‘volunteer’ where we will bring you with us to see the legal advice in practise. You’ll also see us sharing our competitions and charity events so make sure to keep up to date with our social media accounts- @uccflac on Instagram and Twitter. Looking forward to meeting you soon!

Friends of MSF Hi there! We’re UCC Friends of MSF, a charitable society that focuses on fundraising for Médecins Sans Frontières and raising awareness for the work they do around the world. MSF provides medical assistance to individuals that are affected by conflict, epidemics or natural disasters. We encourage all students with an interest in helping out with fundraising to join our society. We carry out so many fun events throughout the year and always start things off with a Volunteer Night, where we meet all new first years who are interested in joining the society and talk about what we do to help fundraise for MSF. We are known for our fun events such as the Netflix and Chill Quiz, our annual Winter Swim and UCC’s Got Talent. We also carry out many speaker events to get a first-hand insight from healthcare professionals who work for MSF. We have also carried out many campaigns in the past. These included school trips, an information night on how medications are developed and sold and also a mental health campaign where we gave out free teas/coffees and snacks to students on campus. We often go into the city centre for bucket collections which have always been a fantastic way to raise money. Make sure you follow our Instagram @uccfriendsofmsf to stay updated on all we do and get notified of our upcoming events. We can’t wait to meet all new members this year and we’re really looking forward to the year ahead!
General Practice The GP society aims to foster interest in the field of General Practice by engaging students in events that highlight the role of the GP, provide awareness for important issues relevant to the discipline and provide opportunities for undergraduate students to improve their medical skills. We also aim to connect with the wider UCC student population by collaborating with other societies such as the Public Health Society, the LGBT Society, and the Cancer Society in recent years. Another pillar of our society involves raising money for local charitable organizations such as Rebel Wheelers and Cork Simon as well as for organizations that support medical research such as mental health research. We are very much looking forward to next year where we can hopefully resume in person events! We hope to see you there!
Genetics The UCC Genetics Society is a small academic society where students from all disciplines can bond over their common interest in Genetics. After all, what could be more fascinating than finding out about the exact thing that makes you unique! Throughout the year we will host both academic and social events for our members. We find that by striking the balance between academic and social events, our members have the opportunity to network for their future careers as well as, making friends for life. We are passionate about representing those who are affected by genetic disorders and host UCCs annual Cystic Fibrosis week to raise much needed funds and awareness for patients across Ireland. Genetics is a powerful area of science and has helped to solve many disease related issues over the years. Including our current fight against COVID-19. Whether you are a student of Genetics or simply have an interest in learning more about this intriguing aspect of biology, we will definitely have something to suit your needs.

Government and Politics The UCC Government & Politics society has established itself as the prominent society at the forefront of discussion regarding all things politics. Our society is not aligned to any political parties or ideologies. We welcome any and all opinions to join our society so we can have the opportunity to host interesting and engaging debates. Our society is renowned for being at the heart of the politically diverse landscape within UCC. The society welcomes all students with any political views to join and particularly anybody who wishes to broaden their political understanding of current affairs that are ongoing in such a turbulent political climate. Students of BSc Government and Political Science and BA Politics are deeply encouraged to join as our society exercises your debating skills and broadens our knowledge. The Government and Politics society hosts a wide variety of events over the academic year. We regularly host both formal and informal debates on topical issues which are always thoroughly enjoyable and engaging for all. We welcome an array of highly respected guest speakers for expert analysis and opinions. The society also holds cross-party events on different issues where all of the political parties come together to debate on a particular issue. Our society also hosts many socials such as table quizzes and Politea to help our members meet each other and discover common interests and opinions creating many new friendships for our members. The highlight for our society is Politics Week. During this week we host our annual society ball, a model Dáil event and offer a huge array of events to attend. We also host the annual Government Cup, our yearly soccer tournament for Government and Politics members, students and staff which is a hugely popular occasion every year. Another big date for our society is our annual Politics Fair which offers students a chance to meet companies, organizations and NGOs during the careers section of the day which is then followed by panel discussions in the afternoon. Previous panels include Women in Politics, Active Citizenship and Political Journalism. So for the home of political discussion, amazing guest speakers and the best socials join UCC Government and Politics society this year.
International Development The International Development Society (or Int Dev as we are better known) focuses on global development issues. We aim to engage students in the areas of education, poverty reduction, gender equality, the environment, human rights (and many, many more things!) through creative and informative mediums. From guest speakers to debates, quizzes to movie screenings, there is something for everyone at Int Dev, so each and every person can find something they are passionate about. An Int Dev event would not be an Int Dev event without mention of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals or SDG’s as many of our events are inclusive of the aims and values set out by these goals. We work to empower students to use their voice, share opinions and act against injustice and inequality in our world. Our collaborations with other societies and the wider community help our members to learn even more about the issues affecting all corners of the globe. If this appeals to you then consider joining our society and keep up-to-date on our social media to find out more!

International Relations UCC’s International Relations Society (or IR, for short) is a society for all students from any degree programme to come together and talk about politics and current affairs in a format which simulates the United Nations. At our weekly events, each member represents a country of their choice to discuss global issues ranging from the deforestation of the Amazon, to the role of UN Peacekeepers, to Putin’s Russia. Pre-pandemic, we sent students to locations such as Edinburgh, Hamburg and Budapest to show off the skills they have learned at our weekly Model UN sessions and we hope to revive this tradition before the year is out! We also run the National Model UN (or NatMUN) conference on UCC grounds for secondary schools, maybe you took part in the past! With a big focus on socials and a unique premise, IR is a great way to meet new people, see new places, develop new skills and make memories that will last for years to come. We hope to see you around!

Korean UCC Korean society is a varied society that invites you to experience every aspect of Korean culture. Throughout the year we run events such as language and Kpop dance workshops, talks on Korean media, fashion, and politics, as well as various food events. We hold screening events for the most recent K-dramas and Korean films. Last year we held a successful night with the Embassy of Korea; a great opportunity for those wishing to travel to Korea to study or teach. In recent years we have taken trips to Korean restaurants and shops in Dublin and we hope that this year that this trip will go ahead as planned. We also plan to take some of our workshops online with some cooking, dance and language lessons taking place on our social media platforms in order to accommodate those who may not be able to attend our in person events. We are a society that aims to be as inclusive as possible, and our involvement with UCC’s numerous other societies such as UCC LGBT society, UCC Sci-Fi society, and UCC Chinese society allows us to interact with others in a friendly and safe environment. The coming academic year will be challenging for many of us, however we are eager to meet all of our new members next year and to hold many interactive events for everyone to enjoy.
Law Heading into its 92nd year, UCC’s Law Society is one of the University’s oldest and largest societies. We organise an extremely wide range of activities and do so in an effort to meet the needs and wants of all of our members. The society acts as a great resource to law students to learn more about the opportunities of a law degree but is open to everyone to engage with whether studying law or not as at some point in life the law is relevant to us all! The Society hosts regular House Meetings which involve either prestigious guests, or insightful panel debates on pressing issues, for example. We also facilitate a large amount of debating and moot courts events, open to all members whether they are complete novices or experienced advocates. The Society’s other educational events include our annual Law Conference, our new intervarsity Law summit and the publishing of the Cork Online Law Review. Turning to the social side of things, we produce an extensive social calendar each year, ranging from smaller year-group socials to the blacktie Law Ball and Law Dinner. Finally, we strive to represent the academic and career related views of our members and as such are in constant contact with, and organise many events alongside, UCC’s Law School and employers both in the legal sector and further afield. All UCC law students are automatic members of the Society and are encouraged to make use of it to enhance every aspect of their legal studies. However, students from any discipline are more than welcome to take part in whatever facets of the Society pique their interest. Regardless of how involved you are in the Law Society, you can be assured that everything we produce is of an extremely high standard and created with our members in mind. We have some exciting plans for next year and hope to see plenty of new members, so make sure to say hello to us around campus or get in touch at law@uccsocieties.ie

We also held our successful “Are you smarter than a Leaving Cert?” quiz. As well as this, we host and take part in a number of agricultural activities, such as our annual farm trip. In 2020 we visited a dairy farm in Minane Bridge (Southeast Cork). As there are many Macra na Feirme clubs in Cork, there are plenty of opportunities for competition. We have taken part in many events such as 5 a side tag rugby, soccer, basketball, public speaking, debating, and Capers – a twenty-minute variety show made up of singing, dancing, and comedy scenes. Mathematical Is being good at maths your only personality trait? Does leaving cert maths still give you nightmares? No matter what your relationship status with maths - enemies/hopelessly devoted/it’s complicated - our society is sure to have an event for you in the upcoming year. Mathsoc, Ratsoc, UCC’s greatest treasure, are all names that circulate around this society. This year, under new and improved management (sorry 20/21 committee :’( ), we’re hoping to add the 8th wonder of the world to the ever growing list. While we loved learning about new technology last year, like what to do when your mic’s been on the entire lecture, even though you were 100% muted, Mathsoc are aiming to bring back all the classics, hopefully in person, but also online, this year. These include: Boole Prize (UCC lecturers judge whether competitors are better at lecturing than them), SIG Cup (we attempt to play soccer), IMSA (investigating if other universities’ maths-goers are as good looking as us) and Superbrain (we discover who’s brain is indeed the most super). We also host UCC’s biggest event - Maths and Physics Ball - which is going to be bigger and better this year due to missing last year’s ball. By our maths, it turns out last year’s ball + this year’s ball = an event that can’t be missed. To keep up-to-date with all things Mathsoc, follow us @uccmaths on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. P.S. Look out for available positions on our committee at our upcoming EGM.

Music Welcome to University College Cork! Our music society here is one of the most active societies on campus, but what exactly do we do? We give UCCs’ musicians and music lovers the opportunity to create, perform and simply enjoy music. Music Society is all genre-inclusive and this is best seen through our open mic nights, singer-songwriter competition and battle of the bands competition, where we always see a diverse line-up. We host open mics a few times each semester and (as the name suggests!) the stage is open to anyone and everyone. This is always a great place to debut that song or that cover you’ve been working on behind the scenes! Singer-Songwriter and Battle of the Bands competitions are our two biggest events of the year and this is where all the action happens. UCCs’ best musicians battle it out for the top prize – Recording time in Cork’s very own Blackwater Studios. Each competition takes place over 3 weeks and have drawn crowds time and time again. In fact, the 2020 Battle of the Bands competition completely sold out with crowds of over 180 people (yes 180!) and was awarded UCCs best creative event by UCC Societies! And if all that still doesn’t strike a chord, we have lots of karaoke nights, concerts and other social events planned for the year. So be sure to follow us on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Spotify and Tik-Tok to make sure you don’t miss a beat!
Musical Theatre Hello! We are UCC Musical Theatre Society and let this be your G-U-I-D-E to everything about our splendiferous society! We here at UCCMTS offer everything that musical loving students could ask for, from our events, such as quizzes, open mic nights and bake sales, to an inclusive and electrifying atmosphere of big fun for all students who wish to meet new people who are just as crazy about Hamilton as they are! We also strive to produce full-scale productions each year, the most recent of which were “9 to 5 - The Musical” and “Legally Blonde - The Musical” in 2019/20, which earned us 4 AIMS awards nominations and the Best Creative Event award 2020/21. We also compete in the All-Ireland Musical Theatre Intervarsities each year, putting on a 20 minute musical, at the most recent of which we performed the perfectly pink “Mean Girls - The Musical”. However, over the past year we have found new ways to work around our current circumstances, holding workshops with West End icons such as Courtney Bowman and Luke Bayer and moving many of our events online, such as our Broadway Backwards spectacular. However, we at UCCMTS also want to use the arts to help our wider community, such as our Virtual Flash Mob fundraiser held in aid of CUH. So, if any of these things peak your interest, be sure to listen for the sound of vigorous jazz hands and come find us on Clubs and Socs day to join our fantabulous family!

NetSoc Netsoc is the Networking, Technology, Gaming and Esports Society in UCC. We run gaming and technology events every week. We provide a social outlet for students to play games while also providing educational technology based talks, events and competitions. Netsoc also enters a number of Esports teams in the Irish Collegiate Esports tournaments.
Orchestra The UCC Orchestra, despite its small size, is one of UCC’s most enjoyable societies to be a part of. Some would say we’re instrumental to university life (…don’t boo me, please). We welcome many instruments, big and small, and musicians of varying levels so don’t be afraid to give us a go! Pre-Covid, we cracked open our cases to play a mixture of classical and modern pieces at Christmas concerts, orchestral-rock concerts, and plenty more! In the past year we’ve kept the music going with audio and video performances put together by our brilliant Music Officer Maggie. These pieces included everything from Bizet and Tchaikovsky to Forrest Gump’s theme and a Christmas classic (with virtual open mic nights and quizzes to tide us over in between). Be sure to check out our Instagram uccorchestra for all the tunes! We also have an esteemed string quartet who play at balls and formals for other college societies. We do not have an audition process for the orchestra, and you do not need to be studying music to join us. We encourage all to get involved and enjoy the experience!
People Before Profit If you’re looking for a political society that goes the extra mile, you have found it with UCC-People Before Profit! The UCC PBP Branch is a socialist, environmentalist, feminist and anti-racist movement committed to fighting injustices both on UCC’s campus and across the island of Ireland. We aim to empower UCC students through meetings and events where our members can engage in radical discussions on left-wing policies and develop and learn more about socialist and anti-capitalist theory. Unlike other parties we take the environmental crisis seriously, we realize it will take more than cycle lanes and empty promises to save our future, we will campaign for UCC to make changes where they are needed. Our generation is the first generation to enter adulthood financially worse off than our parents. For too long, we have been let down by the establishment, an establishment that continues to fuel Ireland’s crises ranging from a lack of affordable housing and rent to an ever-worsening mental health crisis. We hope to tackle these issues and more head on via people power and grassroot campaigns. By joining our society, you can get involved in a socialist movement to help fight for a better and more just world. We are committed to anti-apartheid and will put forward an amendment not to use any Israeli products or engage with any Israeli based companies as long as apartheid is being committed against native people by the Israeli state.

Pharmacy The pharmacy society invites you all to join us for another exciting year ahead. We can’t wait to continue to work hard to bring our members another yearly dose of events. Every year we organise events aimed at looking after our members in every possible way, such as educational talks on topics that supplement what pharmacy students learn in college and events that promote the well-being of pharmacy students. Amidst the heavy workload that comes with studying pharmacy, we do not forget about providing entertainment for our members! Last year, despite a global pandemic we held a virtual awards night and this year we are hoping to see a return of both of our formals, the Winter Social in semester 1 and the Pharmacy Ball in semester 2. The Pharmacy Society places a great emphasis on helping first year students settle into college. We run a ‘buddy programme’ through which we match each first-year pharmacy student with a second-year student who will be there to help them out. We organise ‘surviving semester’ talks where students from older years give the students in the year below them advice on each module. Last year we also managed to provide every first-year student with a free copy of a BNF through the ‘BNF drive’ for which the society was awarded the best green initiative award at the annual UCC STARS and BICS awards. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to get in touch with us through our social media!
Philosophical The UCC Philosophical Society is one of UCC’s largest and oldest societies, founded in 1849. We host weekly house debates and socials open to everyone who wants to come along. There is also loads of socializing going on throughout the rest of the year with events such as Halloween, our famous Mistletoe party, quizzes and movie nights. Every week we have Speaker Development-sessions to facilitate a chance to learn how to debate and speak confidently in public. These sessions are open to both beginners and experienced speakers. We also send students to debating competitions all over Ireland and Europe nearly every weekend. This year we’ll be sending teams to Berlin, Leiden, Oxford, Cambridge, Manchester, London, Dublin, Limerick, Galway and many more! If you want any other information: Email us at philosoph@uccsocieties.ie Reach out to us on social media @uccphilosoph

Physics Astronomy The Physics and Astronomy Society (or Physoc) is a departmental society that is open to anyone with an interest in the motions of the stars or the laws that govern our Universe. We cater to both the social and academic wants of our members. We go on multiple trips during the year to go stargazing overnight at the beaches of West Cork or Kerry. There’s also an annual trip abroad to visit different science institutions/locations. In the past this has included seeing the Northern Lights in Iceland, a fusion reactor in Munich and Amsterdam to go to the University of Leiden. We do lots of academic talks and conferences that are accessible to those with no prior knowledge of physics. One of our longer running conferences is the Blow Your Mind Week event where we team up with other STEM societies within the first few weeks of term. This gives you rapid fire talks about a whole range of science topics. In the past Physoc has held climate conferences, space conferences, medical tech conferences and lots more. We’ve had speakers from across the world including astronauts, rocket engineers and climate scientists, and we have lots planned for this year! Whether you have a passing interest in astronomy or are studying physics at university, the society is open to everyone and there’s no membership fees so get involved.
Planning UCC Planning Society is committed to discussing issues surrounding planning and sustainable development. We look forward this year to collaborating with other societies in the University. We are excited to welcome you to join our society and meet people from a diverse range of backgrounds.
Psychological UCC Psych Soc aims to promote psychology on-campus. We do this by offering exciting and different psych-related events to all students – be they studying psychology or not. From information nights to panel discussions, workshops to fundraisers, there are lots of events to come along and enjoy. Last year, we held fundraisers in aid of the Rainbow Club, hosted The Cork Life Centre, The Good Mind Psychologist and guest speakers who spoke about their experiences of Ableism. We also hosted weekly movie nights, collaborated with UCC TKD Club for a night of stretching meditation and with UCC Students for Sensible Drug Policy for a panel discussion on the effects of drug use. The highlight of our year is usually our annual Psych Ball, which will hopefully see a return this coming year after a one-year hiatus. With the hopeful return to campus, we have lots of exciting events, aimed at spreading psychology to the entire student body, planned. We are also hoping to run a number of events for psychology students to help them in writing critical essays, getting to grips with statistics and acing research reports. So please, join us! You’re more than welcome at any of events during the year. Be sure to like and follow us on Facebook (UCC Psych Soc) and Instagram (@uccpsychsoc) for notifications and updates throughout the year.

SÁMH UCC SÁMH’s (Suicide Awareness and Mental Health) Society is based around promoting positive mental health and well-being around campus and beyond. We promote a healthy well being and raise awareness on issues affecting college students and the community outside UCC. We show our engagement as a society by running various events such as mindfulness, tea and coffee stands and campaigns. Our team is always willing to collaborate with other societies within UCC to host events that are exciting and help improve the mindfulness and wellbeing of students and the community beyond. We’re looking forward to welcoming new and current students this academic school year!
Sci-Fi At UCC Sci-Fi, Horror, Fantasy and Anime Society, we focus on bringing you the best these genres have to offer. We primarily host weekly screening of movies and TV series, often featuring viewer choice so that you can help us pick what to watch! These screenings are mixed in with a variety of social events from speed friending, book nights where you can discuss your latest reads and get some great recommendations, and the ever-popular Karaoke! We are hoping of returning to some of our most popular social events this year. Cinema trips and Convention trips to Dublin and Galway are often the highlights of the year and are a great experience. We often have big collaborations such as Blind Date, Monster Mash and finally Nerd Night, where all 3 of UCC’s big nerd societies; Netsoc, WARPS and Sci-Fi introduce themselves and new members get a taste of what all the societies do. We have a deep connection to UCC’s very own Kaizoku-con. This popular Irish anime conventions is a phenomenal weekend for new and old anime fans alike. There’s something for everybody here and we look forward to seeing y’all soon!

Social Democrats The UCC Social Democrats society are the college branch of the national political party, The Social Democrats. The Social Democrats are ambitious for Ireland’s future. We want Ireland to be a republic in which every person has opportunity and dignity. We are a new party, unhindered by the past and the old style of politics. The most prosperous, inclusive and progressive countries on earth are social democracies. We believe Ireland can join this group, and that a great many Irish people want us to. We know that a strong, creative, prosperous, fair, equal and democratic country – in which all children have the opportunity to achieve their potential – is not just an aspiration. It can, and should be, Ireland’s reality. Irish people are tired of short-term thinking, stroke politics, electoral bribes and power that refuses to be held to account. We call for open and transparent government. Honest politics that works in the best interests of the people and not the party or the selected few. We are asking people to join us in building a new politics that reflects the best of Irish culture. We are asking you to join us, to help build a Republic of Equals. If you have any questions or would like more information, email us at socdems@uccsocieties.ie

Surgeon Noonan Surgeon Noonan is both a UCC Society and a fully registered charity (CYH10103) run by 4th year medical students here at UCC. Our society is all about fundraising as much as possible for underprivileged Sub-Saharan African hospitals, while organising lots of fun events for all UCC students to enjoy. Our main events include the Surgeon Noonan Ball, a vintage KILO clothing sale, Take Me Out, bucket collections, along with several table quizzes and raffles, with fantastic prizes up for grabs. Be sure to come along, make some friends, and help us raise some vital funds! We also have our very own buy and sell website dogood.ie, where you can shop for just about anything while supporting a great cause! Each year Surgeon Noonan brings in over €100,000, with 100% of this going directly to the hospitals. Our accountability officer is responsible for overseeing how the money is spent which can be used for anything from buying mosquito nets to prevent malaria, to subsiding larger projects such as the building of new wards. As part of an elective placement, 4th year medical students get the chance to volunteer at these hospitals during the summer. Each student must finance their own trip to ensure all the funds raised goes directly to the hospitals. If you’re interested in our society and want to know more, don’t hesitate to get in touch! Follow us on Instagram to stay up to date with our events or email us at surgeonnoonan@gmail.com for more information.

Welcoming Address First and foremost, congratulations and welcome to UCC! I’ll start by introducing myself – My name is Cian Scully & I am the ‘21/22 Clubs’ Executive President. I’d like to welcome you all to UCC & I hope you are all excited for the year ahead and experiencing what the college student life is all about! We on the Clubs’ Executive are there to provide support and oversee the general day to day running of the 53 clubs currently active in UCC along with the Department of Sport & Physical Activity. With 53 clubs available I can assure you there is something there for everyone, even if you don’t come from a sporting background before starting at university, so we heavily encourage as many students to come along and join a club! UCC’s proud sporting tradition started back in the 1800’s where medicine students joining the rugby club would adapt the skull and crossbones as their logo and overtime it has evolved to the point where all 53 clubs wear the symbol proudly. It is a symbol recognized worldwide as a reflection of our sporting excellence and with the launch of the sports strategy programme in 2019, our focus will be to ensure the future of UCC Sport on a local, national & international scale. This year we will be trying our best to get every student back on the pitch, in the water, in the arena or wherever their respective activity occurs while providing a safe environment to allow for students to get active again. The lingering effects of Coronavirus have resulted in club activity at an all-time low but the Clubs’ Executive and DSPA are committed to doing everything in our power to see you get active, involved & meet new people! I wholeheartedly encourage you get out there and experience as many new clubs as you can & my top priority will be ensuring you get the chance to do so. We must be patient and meticulous with our actions however and the most important thing to us is the welfare and safety of our students as not to cause harm – due to this club activity may be restricted and slow to start for a while but we plan to return to full scale sporting as soon as we’re able. Saying all of that however, we are very excited for the year ahead. While challenging, we are excited in seeing what it presents to us and are looking forward to seeing plenty of you dawn the skull & crossbones with pride! There is a vast variety of clubs available here at UCC from GAA and Rugby to Surf, Dance, Archery and even Trampoline. As mentioned previously there really is something here for everyone & every club contains an eclectic group of people from all walks of life so it’s a great way to meet new people where you wouldn’t have otherwise! My background personally is with the Trampoline Club & I can honestly say I’ve met some of my closest friends and most influential people in my life through this sport. Sharing experiences over the last 4 years with these people made my UCC experience great. Here at UCC, we try and ensure that sport is deeper than what happens on a pitch or in the hall and the results that come of competitions. While our successes at local, national, and international level are important to us – the social, mental, and physical aspects of sport in UCC play just as much of an important role. Our clubs host events throughout the years aimed at people with all levels of experience & I can attest to the fact that getting out and involved is a great way to unwind from college stress as well as allowing you to meet new, interesting people.

CLUBS Aikido Aikido is a sport that embraces the philosophy of non-violence by providing practitioners with techniques which focus on neutralising the force and aggression behind any attack, without resorting to brute force or highly injurious tactics. Aikido focuses on detecting the direction and force behind an attack and how this can be redirected. The UCC Aikido Club has been running since October 1991, operating under the simple philosophy of providing a responsible source of Aikido, committed to the development of its students in an atmosphere of mutual respect, friendship, and learning. UCC Aikido train in the Mardyke Arena where beginners are welcome all year around. If you have any questions about the club, please don’t hesitate to contact us. Email: aikido@uccclubs.ie Facebook: uccaikido
Archery The UCC Archery Club was established in 2010. With the club hosting an annual national competition - National Student Indoor Championships - and participating in intervarsities across the country, it has been hugely successful since its foundation. Archery is open to students of all levels with both beginner and intermediate training sessions. All archers, whether new or experienced, will receive help and advice from our coaches to improve their skills. There is always a great atmosphere at training and it is a good opportunity to meet new people and make friends. Everybody in the club is welcoming and more than willing to help if you are having any difficulties. As well as this, all equipment is provided, so there is no need to worry about any expense. At beginner training sessions, in a relaxed setting, we host seasonal competitions with prizes for the winners. These competitions usually take place at Halloween, Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Easter. This is a good way to keep track of your progress and can be gratifying and instill self-confidence. All funds raised from these competitions are donated to the CUH Children’s Charity. We also run a Beginner’s Course where new archers are invited to intermediate training sessions to further their progress in the sport. It consists of 6 weeks of coaching, resulting in a qualification recognised by Archery Ireland (the national body). This certificate allows you to train and compete with other archery clubs outside of UCC. This is a great opportunity to become more involved with the club and to compete in student competitions. Overall, the archery club is a great place to hang out, have a good time and try something new!

Athletics A big hello from the Athletics Club! As one of the biggest clubs in UCC, we take part in a wide range of events throughout the year - indoor and outdoor track competitions, cross country and road relays are the main events we have each year. The club caters for all experience and levels and has a number of qualified coaches who will help you with whatever your personal goals might be. We have members that have won national titles and represented their country internationally, and also lots of members who are involved purely for the social aspect. Rest assured, no matter what your level of experience or your degree of fitness, you will find a group that works for you. If you have no experience with athletics but would like to get started, we recommend you come down, have a chat, try a few different groups and just see what clicks for you. There are plenty of opportunities to represent UCC throughout the year and you will get to travel all around the country for races and training events if you decide to join. There will also be no shortage of social events where you can get to know the members a bit better off the track. We have plenty of weekends away throughout the year where we always manage to find the right balance between hard work and good craic. If you want to meet new people in a relaxed environment while keeping fit, this club is the one for you. Similarly, if you are a serious runner who wants to improve performance over the next few years, there are plenty of resources available to help you achieve this goal. Just pop down to the Mardyke and on Tuesdays or Thursdays and join the madness, you’ll never look back.
Aussie Rules UCC Australian Football Club (UCC Aussie Rules) was founded in 2012. Starting from a few players just having a kick about, it has expanded rapidly since, with both the men’s and women’s teams playing across a variety of national and international competitions. The Bombers are the men’s team, and have been the most successful club in the relatively brief history of Intervarsity’s Aussie Rules. The Crusaders are the women’s section and since their formation in late 2016 they too have dominated the field. What is Aussie Rules? The easiest description is that it’s a cross between Gaelic Football and Rugby. With tackling, high-fielding and running, the game is fast and physical. With no goalkeepers, the ball is almost constantly in play. We take in lots of new players every year so we teach the game from a beginner level at our weekly training sessions. Training has retained the original atmosphere of craic and fun that the club was created with! Running laps is nowhere to be seen here, the focus is on the skills of the game. After refining their skills at training, members regularly meet outside training hours for a kick about. The club encourages its members to play the game at the highest level. Numerous members have received a call up to the Irish National Teams, the Warriors and the Banshees, and represented their country across the globe. Notably there was a strong contingent in the inaugural International Varsity match against England. The club enters teams in a variety of domestic and international tournaments. The Fitzpatrick Cup is the largest and most prestigious competition with the UCC men’s team being the current champions. It’s through the trainings, competitions and nights out that friendships are forged and the strong team bond is created. The contact details for the club are as follows: Email: aussierules@uccclubs.ie Facebook: UCC Australian Rules Football or @uccaussierules Instagram: @uccaussierules”

Badminton UCC Badminton Club pride ourselves in being a welcoming, all-inclusive club suitable for members of all levels. We now have 6 teams playing competitively in the Cork Leagues and Cups, as well as the Munster championships, meaning we are one of Cork’s biggest clubs. We had 41 players affiliated with Badminton Ireland, which means these players could play in competitions across Ireland. We had 400 sign-ups for clubs day last year, which we are very proud of, and hope to see again! Since we have a range of playing times for every level, you can choose what you want to get out of the club – a relaxed atmosphere at beginners and recreational training, or maybe some more intensity by trying out for one of the UCC Badminton Club teams. Badminton is a sport that can be played year round so it is a great hobby to pick up if you are on the off season of other sports. Our players have been very successful this year. We have had multiple players competing on the Cork County teams in various divisions, who qualified for the All-Ireland Finals. Some of our teams were on top of the Cork leagues before the COVID-19 pandemic stopped play. Every year we host a charity tournament which is a great opportunity for all players to get involved with the committee and have some fun. This year we had over 80 entries and raised over €1,250 for the CUH Children’s Charity. Joining a club at University is not just about the act of playing the sport, it’s about who you meet and the memories you make. UCC Badminton Club is a place where everyone is welcome. We organise various socials and events throughout the year so that our members can get to know each other and make some lifelong friends. All the equipment needed will be provided for you, so what is stopping you from joining?
Basketball Welcome back everyone! Hope you all had an amazing summer and have kept safe with all that has gone on. After another amazing year of UCC Basketball we are all really looking forward to jumping straight back into it. This year we hope to have enough time slots and numbers to allow for some recreational basketball. If this isn’t a possibility we still have teams suitable for everyone. For those more invested in basketball there will be ‘A’ teams for both our lads and ladies. There will also definitely be a “B” team for our girls! All teams train once a week in the Mardyke with matches starting off both home and away for our league teams in November (hopefully!). Any incoming freshers wanting to join there will be a girls and boys team set up as early as possible with a weekend tournament being held somewhere up the country in February if all goes to plan. Always a wild weekend make sure you do not miss out! You can then choose to join one of our league teams if you wish, there will be trials for each of the league teams held as early as possible. All details on our try out times/training details will be posted on our Instagram page and sent out to our mailing list which you can sign up for online or at the club/socs day on Freshers week. The more of you reach out the better as we can set up more teams or look into other possible events etc. This year we want as many people as possible to get involved in the club so don’t be afraid to come down to the training sessions early in the year. We love meeting new people that are interested in basketball and everyone will make you feel welcome. Looking forward to seeing you all soon for another fun year of basketball. Any questions you have feel free to message us over on our Instagram page or send us an email. Always happy to help.

Boxing Looking to get fit, meet new people, or just try something new and exciting? UCC Boxing Club is open to boxers of all levels, whether you’ve been boxing for years or just want to try out a new sport. We start training with a rigorous cardio session and move onto boxing drills. Sparring takes place nightly, but you won’t box unless you want to! We provide gloves and head gear, just bring along a towel, a water bottle and a gum shield if you intend on sparring. Every year the club competes in Novice Intervarsity Championships which take place in November and the National Intervarsity Championships in March. Our coaches Ken Anthony and Eoin Buckley have a wealth of experience in boxing and have coached many of our members to huge success in the Irish Intervarsities. Our club provides a safe environment for students of UCC to learn and train the sweet science, whether your aim is to fight and compete for our team or simply for fitness and to learn about the sport. In the past academic year we had several gold medal wins in both Irish Third Level Competition as well as in the Birmingham University Box-Cup. Camogie UCC Camogie Club is one of the oldest clubs in the existence of the Camogie Association, and have the proud record of taking part in the first ever intercollegiate camogie match against UCD on 18th April 1915. Since then, UCC has won 32 Ashbourne Cup Titles with their first success in 1919, and the most recent in 2003. The club has also won Purcell Cup titles (the second tier of the third level camogie competition) as recently as 2014. Impressively, UCC Camogie won six in-a-row in both the 1920s and the 1970s, the record for the longest reign in the history of the Ashbourne Cup competition. UCC also has the second highest amount of Ashbourne Cup titles out of all the colleges. Unfortunately in their pursuit of the Ashbourne Cup in 2019, UCC reached the final to be defeated by UL. Over the years, countless well-known names have donned the UCC skull and crossbones, with the senior team including many All-Star players. Bringing this element of skill to the team has undoubtedly helped UCC Camogie succeed, but it is the hard work and dedication of every player within the club that has really pushed them to new heights. UCC Camogie is looking onwards and upwards to another year of training and competition. However it’s not just about sport, as the club also offers a great opportunity to meet new friends while practicing skills, keeping fit and just having fun. So why not try something new and exciting as we get back to normality after a tough year! UCC Canoe Club is suitable for all levels of skill whether you have never even seen a kayak before or have been paddling all your life! Don’t worry if you don’t have much experience as our members are always willing to teach and help you improve your skills. We normally train twice a week with a pool session in the Mardyke Arena on Wednesdays at 10.15pm and a session on the River Lee on Fridays at 2.15pm. On the paddling side of things, we train in lots of different disciplines including polo, freestyle, long distance and racing. We compete in various competitive events such as Munster polo league, Cork Race League, Kayaking Inter-Varsities and Galway Fest! In 2019 we placed third at the kayaking inter-varsities and saw many successes at Galway Fest. We hope to be back competing again in the coming year after far too long away! Then we have the social side of the club. We have many events and trips away during the year such as the legendary JACKS weekend to Lahinch in October. We’ll have many social events throughout the year which give members a chance to make new friends and get to know each other! Check out our social media pages on Instagram and Facebook (@ucccanoeclub) for a little bit more of an insight into the club and what we do, and please don’t hesitate to message us if you have any questions or queries!
Chess UCC Chess club is a relaxed club environment that helps train skills such as concentration, patience, hand eye coordination, reaction times and other skills useful for any degree program and life ventures. We like to involve everyone in committee activities and it is a good experience to learn how committees work with senior officers who will aid and teach necessary skills in a risk free environment. We attend several tournaments in a year and provide funding for the annual mulcahy cup in Cork City, as a result we get free and discounted entries for anyone in the club. Tournaments are not mandatory, nor is prior knowledge of the sport, we welcome all who wish to attend and will help teach anyone who wishes to learn. We meet weekly in the western gateway building however we do not expect that everyone will be able to attend every week and we are not strict on attendance, if you wish to play a game every now and then then feel free to attend, as UCC students the club is as much yours as it is anyone else’s. Club membership is completely free, we often host our own events within the university which are completely free to attend as well. Our e-mail is chess@uccsport.ie if you have any inquiries. With respect to tournaments our members have competed in events across the country such as the bunratty chess festival. Chess is a rewarding sport and well worth any time invested in it. We hope to see lots of new faces for the 2020/21 academic year.

Cricket Formed in 1978/79, the UCC Cricket Club has grown into a prominent cricket club both in Munster and within the Irish University Cricket Association (IUCA). We are affiliated to Munster Cricket Union (under Cricket Ireland) and the Irish University Cricket Association (IUCA). Currently we are sponsored by the Bank of Ireland and Asian Foods Cork. Through regular participation in the indoor and outdoor intervarsity championships; as well as in the Munster Division 1/2/3 leagues, cups and T20s, the club boasts of a rich cricketing heritage. Our most recent major success came in January 2020, when we won the Indoor Intervarsity Championships 2020 (Belfast) and were crowned as the champions of indoor cricket in Ireland. We were also successful in the Munster Cups and leagues, where in 2018 we won the Munster Minor Cup and subsequently in 2019 we were runners up in the Cork T20 Cup and Munster Division 2 T20 Cup. As a club, we aim to promote and encourage participation in cricket within the university community while conforming to the laws of cricket set out by the three most relevant cricket authorities namely, (a) the International Cricket Council (ICC), (b) Cricket Ireland and (c) Munster Cricket Union (MCU). For this, we look forward to participating in as many tournaments as possible to provide our members with ample opportunity to actively participate and showcase their skills in competitive cricket in Ireland across multiple skill levels. We are also proud of the fact that we are the only COVID-19 compliant University Cricket Club in Munster. We have achieved this after passing several stringent assessments set by the Munster Cricket Union and UCC Sports. As a prerequisite, we had to ensure the availability of the necessary individual protective gears for each member, that are eventually well maintained through proper cleaning and sanitization. Roadmaps for efficient training have been implemented along with all necessary supporting documentation to keep a track of the progress, health and safety of each individual. As an unit, UCC cricket club has, and will continue to work hard to ensure that all the necessary protocols are met beforehand for a safe and complete 2020/21 cricket season.
Dance UCC Dance Club is known to provide a prime college dance experience for all of its members. Here at UCC Dance, we pride ourselves in being an extremely welcoming and friendly club. Whether you have danced before, or you are just looking to try something new and make friends, there will be a place for you here at UCC Dance. It is a safe space, where you can destress from college, whilst also having the chance to compete at a very high national standard. UCC Dance Club provides both advanced and open classes in a range of styles including Irish Dance, Hip-hop, Jazz, Contemporary and Ballet. Throughout the year, there are also numerous workshops arranged in which students can learn various other styles such as tango, heels, etc. Along with our weekly classes, we also try to get involved with other clubs and societies here at UCC as much as possible. As a UCC student, you will be sure to see the UCC Dance club performing at various events throughout the academic year, such as college balls and fundraisers. We have often collaborated with other clubs and societies as we love learning from each other and helping one another in any way possible. For example, in November 2019, we collaborated with UCC Cancer Society and organised a “UCC Strictly Come Dancing” event, which was such a success, that it won “non-competitive event of the year” in the 2020 club awards. This event raised over €4000 for the Irish Cancer Society. We also held a workshop week in November in which we raised funds for Surgeon Noonan. UCC Dance has a competitive element to it in the form of the annual intervarsities. In March 2020, NUIG hosted the event in Galway. A group of 60 UCC Dance members travelled to Galway for the competition. It is safe to say that the UCC Dance Club’s success in the annual intervarsities is growing every year. We were lucky enough to come away with a first place in the Contemporary, Jazz and the Mixed Piece categories. Mixed Piece is a combination of all styles of dance dancing together in one piece. We received second place in Irish Dancing, and we received a third place in Hip-Hop. This success was due to the incredible work put in by all our members and the relentless efforts put in by all of our teachers and the committee. All of us here at UCC Dance are extremely proud of our club as we watch it grow every year. We are truly excited about what is yet to come. We are a friendly club, and we encourage new members. Regardless of your dance ability, we can guarantee that you will enjoy yourself here at UCC Dance.

Darts UCC Darts Club was founded 12 years ago and has gone from strength to strength ever since. The club has grown in numbers over the last few years and is open to all players, beginners or otherwise! We run an in-house league every week, culminating in a big finals night at the end of the year where we crown the UCC Darts Championship winner as well as giving out many other awards. The club also has its own team which competes in Division 2 of the CDPA league where we finished runners up last year. Given the increase in members we will also be entering a team in Division 4 of the CDPA league. This gives all members a chance in playing in a slightly more competitive manner in a sociable setting. The league games take place every Monday after the in-house league, either at home in the New Bar or away in a rival bar. With our membership in the CDPA we are also offered the opportunity to compete in a number of other singles, doubles, 3-a-side and team events that take place throughout the year. New members don’t need to bring their own darts. If you want to come up and see what we have to offer or if you want more information or have any questions, don’t hesitate to check out our Facebook page, drop us a message or email us at darts@uccclubs.ie! We hope to see you in October!
Equestrian UCC Equestrian Club is dedicated to all things equestrian and aims to promote and establish a network in UCC for all equestrian and riding enthusiasts. We compete in Tetrathlon every year, which consists of running, swimming, shooting and riding and train for this in the first semester. While we have plenty of opportunities for our members to compete in a variety of competitions throughout the year we do also like to have a bit of fun and organise various activities during the year such as pony club games, club social nights and trips to encourage everyone to get to know each other and hopefully make lifelong friends. We are proud to say that we have a great bond in the group and we love welcoming new members to the team! So don’t be shy - whether you’re a happy hacker or a pro, everyone is welcome to join the club. Fencing UCC Fencing is one of Ireland’s strongest fencing clubs, consistently performing well in the national circuit. We pride ourselves on our welcoming and friendly atmosphere, and the fencing talent that is produced and fostered here in Cork. Our club is comprised of members of various skill levels, from complete beginners who are trying out the sport for the first time, to advanced fencers who have been practising the sport for years. We cater to UCC students and staff members, providing a fun and safe atmosphere in which to participate, and there are no costs or charges required to join the club since all gear and equipment is provided. UCC Fencing Club is one of the few clubs in Cork that gives people the opportunity to discover the wonderful sport of fencing. One of the original Olympic events, fencing is an exhilarating sport using bladed weapons. Modern Fencing is fast, athletic, and exciting. The objective is to score as many points on your opponent as possible by touching them with the point of your blade (or any part of the blade in sabre!). Score is kept using electronic scoring equipment, with the help of a referee. There are three weapons used in the sport of fencing: foil, épée and sabre. Each has their own style and unique set of rules, ensuring that there is a type of fencing for everyone to enjoy. We pride ourselves on our ability to take novices and train them up into experienced fencers. Our club has multiple coaches with years of fencing experience in the Irish circuit, and this has greatly contributed to our competitive success. Fencing competitions are held often in Ireland (approximately one every weekend) and UCC fencers frequently medal at these events, particularly in novice and student competitions. Students are encouraged to attend these events, but they are by no means obligatory – Members can be as competitive or non-competitive as they like, and many simply come to learn the sport and enjoy the social aspect of the club. Back in March at the 2020 Irish Fencing Intervarsities UCC performed strongly - overall our club placed 4th, an impressive standing considering that much of the team was comprised of first year fencers. However pride of place went to our Men’s Foil team, who were the first UCC team in the history of Intervarsities to ever win the Men’s Foil trophy (previously only ever won by Trinity College Dublin). We hope to see this competitive success continue into 2021, not just in foil, but in all three disciplines of the sport. UCC Fencing Club provides a great start to college life (or a great overhaul if you’re a returning student) and it’s a brilliant opportunity to make new friends and meet interesting people from outside your course. We strive to be friendly and welcoming to all, so definitely take the opportunity to drop in and give it a try. It could be the best decision you make all year.
Flag Football Flag Football returns to UCC for a fourthyear! The sport has become increasingly popular and fast growing over the last few years. Flag Football is a non-contact variation of American football, played with five players on each team and replacing the tackle with the removal of a flag, similar to tag rugby. Both male and female members are encouraged to join and no prior experience of any form is necessary as we will teach all the basics. Each year the club takes part in the Emerald bowl competition, which includes teams from all over Ireland and runs from September to December. The club also competes in many intervarsity and charity tournaments across the academic year. This year we are glad to announce that we have added a second team to compete in the Glas Bowl conference which is the second division of Irish Flag Football. Members who do not wish to play in competitive games are equally welcome to those who are looking to compete for a national title this year. If you are interested in being the Irish Tom Brady or Antonio Brown, please feel free to contact us by email or on any of our social media pages listed below and we would be more than happy to provide any further information on the club or answer any queries that you may have. Futsal UCC Futsal club is a small club which was created three years ago. This year will be our fourth year together and during our short reign our club has enjoyed some success while competing against the best futsal universities in Ireland. During the college year there are two main competitions in which we strive to compete in (Regionals and Nationals). Our club is guaranteed to play in at least one competition with this being the Regionals. In order for our club to reach Nationals, which is the biggest futsal competition of the year, we must win Regionals in order to progress to Nationals. Our aim for the upcoming year remains the same for our ever growing club. As we look to rebuild our team in what we hope will be our most successful year as a club, we are excited for what lies ahead. Each training consists of high paced workouts in which we try our very best to prepare each individual for tournament level. We set our standards very high and our club requires commitment from every individual. Whilst we are serious in our preparation for tournaments and glory, our club is also a club in which you are guaranteed to have fun. Our committee members are easy going, friendly and just normal students like yourselves so if you are looking for somewhere to go for 2 hours to clear your head, play ball, have a laugh and have a good time, UCC Futsal is the club for you regardless of what level you are at. Everybody is welcome at our club and we would be pleased to have you come play and train with us. We also have a number of exciting events this year in which we cannot wait to share with you guys throughout the year including the possibility of going on a trip outside of Ireland to play some futsal matches. All is to be discussed and confirmed within the coming months, so we hope to see as many of you as possible in September to become part of what we believe is going to be a very successful year for us!
Gaelic Football Gaelic Football is one of the most popular sports in Ireland and, here in UCC, that is no different. There are five teams in the college which consist of two fresher’s teams as well as a Senior, Intermediate and Junior team. All levels are catered for so whether you want to play at the highest level and compete for the Sigerson Cup or just want to get a bit of extra training in, come along and try out. UCC Gaelic Football has a rich tradition in third level competitions. Having won the Sigerson Cup 21 times since the competition started, UCC can certainly hold its own at the highest level in third-level football. In 2016, UCC Gaelic Football reached the semi-final stage of the Sigerson Cup, losing out by the narrowest margins to St. Mary’s College Belfast who were the eventual winners. UCC Gaelic Football also compete in the Cork Senior Football Championship and have won the title ten times, most recently in 2011. The UCC Gaelic Football team achieved a huge victory in 2019 when they defeated St Mary’s, Belfast in the Sigerson Cup final. This led to them achieving half of the historic double win of Sigerson and Fitzgerald. This unique double was last won in 1988 when UCC won out in both cups. UCC Gaelic Football is looking forward to another great year in 2020/21, where we hope you will join us. Handball Handball is perhaps one of the lesser known sports within the GAA and yet is arguably the most skillful. Handball can be played as singles or doubles, and is played on a court similar to squash called an “alley”. Here in UCC Handball Club, we welcome both complete beginners and seasoned players. With a strong cohort of talented players, it is a great opportunity for beginners to get involved and to benefit from the coaching and expertise of current UCC players who play at top intervarsity, inter-county and provincial levels. A select number of players have played at a highly competitive level overseas in the USA and have great insights into the game which they are more than happy to share with players starting off. Opportunities with the club include being eligible to play at three different intervarsities during the academic year whilst also getting the chance to learn a new sport and partake in the many social outings the club organises during the year. Hockey UCC Men’s Hockey Club is made up of three teams catering for all levels and abilities, from the elite athlete with international caps, to the social player looking to have some fun and keep active including those new to the sport. The club competes in Munster Divisions 1, 2 and 3 as well as competing nationally in the Irish Senior and Junior Cups, and the Irish Hockey Trophy. UCC MHC was one of the clubs in the newly formed EY Hockey League Division 2 having qualified the season previous to represent Munster. The flagship weekend in the college hockey calendar is the Annual Irish InterVarsity Cup which takes place over the October Bank Holiday weekend and is hosted by a different college each year. The weekend offers students the opportunity to get to know players from other colleges and in 2018 UCC MHC just missed out on a Cup Final spot after a narrow loss in the semis. Most matches usually take place at the weekend with a break over the Christmas period. All training and home matches take place in the UCC Sports Grounds, a world-class facility that has hosted numerous international matches and competitions in the last few years. It is one of only two water based pitches in Munster and is used by the Irish Senior Men and Women’s teams in the lead up to major competitions as well as the Irish Underage Regional Squads. Off the field, we host a wide range of social events, with club nights out held frequently throughout the year. The annual Christmas Party and Hockey Ball are held in conjunction with the Ladies Hockey Club and are eagerly anticipated by all! We are constantly looking to recruit new players and pride ourselves in being extremely inclusive and welcoming to all. Currently we have a vast range of members of different nationalities, both young and old. We would encourage anyone interested to contact us at hockey@uccclubs.ie, or on any of our social media accounts. We will also be present at Clubs Day with a sign-up sheet and will be happy to answer any questions.
Hurling UCC Hurling is one of the oldest clubs in UCC, proudly wearing the famous Skull and Crossbones when we represent the college on the playing field. The UCC Hurling Club plays for one of the most famous trophies in GAA, the Fitzgibbon Cup, which is the premier competition in hurling between Higher Education Institutions. UCC are currently top of the roll of honour with 43 titles. The Fitzgibbon Cup is named after Edwin Fitzgibbon who was a former lecturer in philosophy in UCC. In 2018 UCC hurlers achieved a remarkable joint double with UCC Gaelic footballers by securing the Fitzgibbon cup. UCC defeated Mary I in the cup final to bring home the Fitzgibbon for the 42nd time. This means UCC have achieved the unique Sigerson and Fitzgibbon double, last seen in 1988 when UCC last brought home both cups. UCC Hurling caters for all grades so everyone is welcome and there is a role for whoever is interested, whether you’re looking to touch up on your hurling skills or are playing at an elite intercounty level. There are currently six teams in the college; a senior, intermediate and junior team, as well as three fresher teams. UCC has always been very competitive across the board and also competes in the Cork Senior Hurling Championship, winning the title twice. Inline Hockey Having been set up in the 1990s, the UCC Inline Hockey club offers students a unique sporting experience. Inline Hockey is a sport, very similar to ice hockey but played on roller-skates. Here at UCC Inline Hockey we teach beginners to skate, advance those looking to improve and try to challenge our more experienced players. We skate, jump, sprint and sometimes fall. At training, we do simple drills to improve skating, stickhandling and shooting as well as playing matches amongst ourselves. For those who like fast paced and intense play, or those who prefer slow and methodical sports, inline hockey has it all, catering to all levels of interest in sport. While being able to roller-skate is a great benefit, don’t worry if you can’t. Our experienced members are happy to help all new club members learn the ropes of the game and skating. While our club is mostly recreational, if there are enough skilled players and demand, we enter our team UCC Skulls in the Irish Senior League, where we play against teams all over Ireland. For our rookies, we try to organise an event each year, ranging from an In-Club tournament, a trip to play another team (we’ve gone to Galway, London and Longford in the past!) or invite other teams to play a friendly match. Along with all this there are annual organised trips to the ice rink at Christmas and lots of other fun socials and events. We currently train once a week, but we are hoping to have a second day available later in the year. We train at Colaiste Chriost Ri, Capwell Rd, Turners Cross. For directions and lots more information on the club, check out our website inlinehockey.ucc.ie. Feel free to contact the club with any questions you may have by email at inlinehockey@uccclubs.ie. We can’t wait to meet all our new members this year, at training soon.
Judo Judo is one of the most popular form of martial arts in the world. It’s one of the biggest Olympic sports in terms of competitors and there are millions of judoka worldwide. However, it has not taken much hold in Ireland – yet. For those who do not know what judo is, it is quite unlike the martial arts that you would generally think of; there is no kicking or punching, rather throwing and grappling. The main objective of judo is to use your opponent’s weight against them to throw them on their backs – maximum effect with minimum effort. There’s both standing fighting and groundwork fighting, both of which are great ways of defending oneself. Judo is a fantastic sport in many ways; to get fit and maintain that fitness; to learn how to fight and defend yourself; to help you feel more confident; but most of all it’s loads of fun. We cater for all levels of judo, from absolute beginner to highly advanced. There is never any pressure to participate in events or competitions, if someone wishes to play just for fun then that is just as great! However, if you wish to throw yourself in and get to as many competitions as possible, we pride ourselves in creating opportunities for judoka of all levels of ability to be able to compete and learn the rules of competition. Through national competitions, it is safe to say that we are the most decorated university judo club in Ireland. In the past year, we have competed in many national and international events in which our club has collectively gathered over 70 medals – which is quite impressive! Our club holds a great reputation throughout the judo community in Ireland, and internationally, thanks to some of our Erasmus students that we have had the pleasure of getting to know after they joined our club during their year in Ireland. If you would like to read about their experiences here, you can find them on our website under Erasmus Testimonies. We highly encourage people to join a club or society when they first arrive in college as it is the best way of getting to know people. And if you would like to throw yourself into something new – judo is the one for you.

Karate Karate Club is one of UCC’s martial arts clubs. Here, we practice Shotokan karate under a skilled sensei. Our club is a lot more relaxed than a traditional dojo, and we’re sure to have fun as well as train to move up in our karate gradings (where we get our next coloured belt). We aim to have gradings every year. We also have a beginners’ class every year to go through the basic moves, and hopefully to get them their first belts! Everyone learns at their own pace in this club, and we encourage anyone who’s curious about the traditional martial arts to join, and develop their own interests within the club. Whether you’re interested in sparring and competitions, or you’d prefer to just focus on learning technique, there’s a place for everyone. We usually train twice a week. As well as all the training, we also like to have some socials throughout the year, so that we can get to know one another. Last year we entered two competitions, the Mixed Martial Arts competition in CIT and the Intervarsities in Dublin (DCU). We had medal winners in multiple categories in both competitions. The competitions consist of kata (movement and technique) and kumite (sparring). As well as this, many of our members received new belts through the year, which are officially registered with the Karate Federation. UCC Karate club is the perfect club to relieve exam stress and to learn how to defend yourself, giving both mental and physical benefits. All students are welcome!
Kickboxing UCC Kickboxing Club is the largest martial arts club in UCC. The club operates under the KBI (Kickboxing Ireland) and our members have gone on to represent the university at both national and international levels. At our training sessions you can get the opportunity to try continuous and point sparring and also learn useful self-defence techniques. Here at UCC Kickboxing Club, we believe that kickboxing is for everyone, regardless of experience. Our training sessions are open to everyone, from absolute beginners to seasoned fighters. Here you can learn new techniques, improve your fitness and most importantly make new friends. We try our best to make sure that everyone feels welcome at our club and our social events outside of training and competitions are a great way to get to know the committee as well as meet fellow club members. We as a club are passionate about giving back to the wider community outside of UCC Clubs and Societies and each year UCC Kickboxing Club hosts a fight night to raise money for a chosen charity. This is always an incredibly fun night for everyone involved. Taking place in Devere Hall, the fight night features contestants from both our club as well as the other martial arts clubs in UCC going head to head in continuous sparring. Whether you’ve been training for years or simply for a few weeks, our fight night is a great way to get a taste for sparring, have some fun and help to raise money for charity. So whether you want to learn how to fight, get active or simply take a break from college work, come to one of our training sessions and see for yourself the benefits of getting involved with UCC Kickboxing Club!

Kung Fu Hi! We’re UCC Kung Fu. So, you may have heard of Kung Fu before in movies like the Matrix or maybe any Jackie Chan or Bruce Lee movie. Well we train in the Fu Lung Chuan school of Kung Fu and strive to improve ourselves physically, mentally and spiritually. We use our skills to help us in all aspects of our lives, be it mental sharpness to help with exams or the ability to be able to defend ourselves against an attacker. As a result, the emphasis in our training is on improving our flexibility, strength and endurance. For our advanced classes we have weapons training in bow staff and nunchuks. In Fu Lung Chuan there is no such thing as a typical class, with each being individually challenging and diverse one night you could be doing kicks with Gaughan, the next maybe hardening with McSuibhne, followed, maybe on the weekend by a meditation session in the mountains after a nice hill walk, as we believe in diversity and what better place to clear your head then nature surrounded by the elements. We also run numerous social events throughout the year, including a “Movie Night” once a month where we get together and enjoy food and watch a Kung Fu movie. We also go on “Culture Nights” to experience Chinese culture, food and festivals. We are always happy to see new faces so if you’re interested then make sure to send us an email at kungfu@uccclubs.ie or find us on our social media!
Lacrosse The lacrosse club in UCC is one of the universities newest clubs, being formed only in the past four years. We have enjoyed a very successful third season; we have seen the number of members growing and seen huge improvement among everyone. We’re looking forward to growing our club and seeing what we can achieve over the coming year. The sport is still new in Ireland so the community is very close knit. We work with and regularly attend match days in other universities including UCD, NUIG and QUB. Our club is great if you want the opportunity to travel around Ireland and maybe in Europe should we be successful competitively. We currently have one men’s and one ladies team. There is no previous knowledge or experience needed to join our club as we start our training at the basics and work our way up to being match ready! We welcome people of all abilities and talents. There is no need to be worried about fitness levels or natural talent as we all work together to achieve the best for each individual! Feel free to bring your own gear if you have it, but we do have gear to loan to people if you need it. Ladies will need a gum shield in time for competitive matches and we also have ladies sticks to buy if you decide to keep up the sport. We hope to see new faces at training this year and can’t wait to see what we can achieve together! Email: lacrosee@uccclubs.ie Facebook: UCC Lacrosse

We are the largest ladies hockey club in Munster and last year we welcomed over 180 enthusiastic freshers to the club. The club has 6 competitive teams which compete in Divisions 1 to 6. The teams take part in a variety of competitions throughout the hockey season which include the Munster League and Cup in each team’s respective division, the Irish Junior and Senior Cup and the EYHL 2. Each team trains twice a week on our state-of-the-art based pitch in the Mardyke. Our Club regularly competes across all levels of competition and has a good track record for continuously bringing back silverware throughout the year. Ladies Soccer Have you played soccer for as long as you can remember or have you got the urge to suddenly take up soccer, do not panic whatever interest or experience you have we cater for all here in UCC Ladies Soccer. We currently have two teams but as a club we are always on the lookout for new members no matter what your ability may be. Made2Move The UCC Made2Move club was established in 2018. The clubs focus is helping physically inactive students become more active in a relaxed and non competitive manner. It is open to all students from those who were active previously or those who would like to start being more active. It is well proven that being active helps you feel better physically and mentally. It gives you more energy and helps you manage stress. It is recommended that all adults do 150 minutes of physical activity a week and the Made2Move club is based on helping students at UCC achieve this. Many students would like to be active but some may not know how to start or find a suitable routine for themselves. Also, many students find it difficult to manage the workload at university and making time for exercise. The Made2Move club provides the solution. The club is made up of active students (MoveMentors) who guide, support and motivate inactive students (MoveMentees) to become more active. The MoveMentors are trained students who help MoveMentees create an individual exercise routine for themselves based on their preferred activity. The MoveMentors can exercise by walking or jogging with their MoveMentee and also accompany them to the gym or to fitness classes at the Mardyke. The premise of the Made2Move club is to help students make physical activity part of their lifestyle and to establish a routine which they can maintain throughout their time at university. Motivational and educational talks with guest speakers are organised throughout each semester. The subject matter of the talks are based on topics students will find interesting and inspiring. Social activities where all members of the Made2Move club can meet are organised weekly. Each semester is completed with a charity activity such as a 5km walk/run. Overall the Made2Move club is one where support and guidance is provided for students at UCC to become more active in a non competitive manner with the focus being on being active for their health and wellbeing.

Motorcycle The original UCC Motorcycle Club was established in the 1980s and other than a brief hiatus has been going strong ever since. The club has the distinction of being the only university-based motorcycle club in the country. Open to students and staff alike, the club attracts both active riders and non-riders with an interest in some aspect of motorcycling. Whether it is the mechanical side of motorcycle maintenance, road and track racing, or a curiosity about what is involved in owning and using a motorbike, UCC Motorcycle Club has something to offer you. Club members meet regularly in the well-equipped, purpose-built workshop to work on project bikes. Members who have a bike are encouraged to perform basic maintenance such as oil changes, chain and drive maintenance, replacing brake pads, etc. under the guidance of the club’s qualified coach. The club’s members pride themselves on being welcoming and inclusive. The purpose of the club is to exchange knowledge, build skills and share the joys of motorcycle ownership with anyone who’s interested. It isn’t all work though; throughout the year the motorcycle club’s committee organises events and activities. Check out our Facebook page for more information and keep an eye out for events around campus.

Olympic Handball Olympic handball is a fast paced, modern tactical team sport. It is one of the most popular sports in Europe, with millions of active handball players, and it is continuing to grow in Ireland due to the arrival of continental players. It is played by two teams of seven players each (six field players and a goalkeeper) by passing the ball around using only your hands with the aim of throwing it into the other team’s goal. UCC Olympic Handball Club (OHC) is one of the most successful handball clubs in Ireland and consists of a male team and a female team, both teams play the Irish Olympic Handball Association’s Senior League. Moreover, teams also compete in the IOHA cup, with the female team impressively finishing in third place last year. The UCC OHC has members from all over the world and provides a great opportunity to meet new people, especially if you are new to Ireland. The club also regularly organises a variety of social events, which makes it easier to get to know everyone. We welcome people with all skill levels to join the club, from complete beginners to experienced player! Feel free to ask any questions through email or social media, or just come along to our training sessions at the Mardyke Arena.
Olympic Weightlifting The Olympic Weightlifting club provides the perfect addition of athleticism to your typical college routine. What better way to de-stress from academic work than to hurl your own body weight over your head, before hearing the satisfying boom of the weights hitting the platform? As a sport, Olympic Weightlifting involves competing in 2 movements - the Snatch, and the Clean & Jerk. Both involve moving a loaded barbell from the floor to an overhead position, either as a single fluid movement (the Snatch) or 2 distinct movement phases (the Clean and Jerk). These are the primary focus in training, complemented by accessory/assistance moves and plenty of flexibility work... not to mention everyone’s favourite, foam rolling. Even if you’ve never lifted before, don’t worry - we can break down and teach you all the movements from scratch! There are many competitions that club members can compete in throughout the year, the biggest of which is the Inter-varsities. The club has had much success on the platform in previous years; in February 2020, UCC Olympic Weightlifting club took home 2 golds, 2 silvers and a bronze medal. In 2019 the club won 7 golds, 3 silvers and a bronze between the Munster Open and Intervarsities. We often take part in less competitive ‘meets’ too, such as the Lifting League where a team from UCC took first place in 2019. We see ourselves as a lighthearted club with a friendly atmosphere. Regardless of experience level, we want everyone to feel comfortable chatting and sharing tips on form at training. This year we also hope to get back to attending social nights organised by our Ents Rep. The Olympic Weightlifting Club is perfect for anyone looking to begin or progress their strength training journey, develop their athleticism and have the craic!

Powerlifting UCC Powerlifting club is now in its eight year and we’ve grown so much since our conception. It was founded by Abigail Cronin in April of 2013. The club has enjoyed a wealth of success, from winning collegiate intervarsity competitions 4 years in a row, to having past & present members of the club represent Ireland at International competitions. The club has no plans of letting up or slowing down anytime soon. UCC Powerlifting club boasts memberships in multiple drug free powerlifting federations including the IrishPF, IDFPA & AIPO. However, what separates UCCPC from other clubs isn’t the intense, physical nature of the sport we practice. It’s the nature of inclusiveness that we all embody. Whether male or female, young or old, no matter your strength level, Powerlifting welcomes us all. It’s the sense of community that each and every member of the club possesses. It’s the fact that everyone in the club is willing to help his/her teammate, whether it be in the gym or outside. The friendships formed in the club outstretch far beyond the squat racks. We’re a family here at UCC Powerlifting. We hope you’ll enjoy being a part of it.

If you are interested in learning to scuba dive or snorkel, we are open to complete beginners as well as the more experienced divers. Here at UCCSAC we will take you on an adventure and train you up to become a qualified diver. We are a branch of CFT, the Irish Underwater Council, which is an affiliate member of CMAS, the international umbrella organisation for recreational diver training organisations. We are a very active club with some fantastic trips away to be had to explore the coasts around Ireland. We are also very social and like to meet up regularly to chat about past, present and future diving. Make no mistake, the underwater world is the last great wilderness on the planet. Surf Whether you’re a group of thrill-seeking dudes who’ve never stepped on a board or a semi-pro surfer looking for new friends to take on the seas with, look no further than one of UCC’s most popular sporting groups, Surf Club! The club is open to beginner and experienced surfers alike, and surf outings target a wide range of skill levels. Members benefit from our annual organised trips to famous beaches such as Lahinch, Co. Clare and Castlegregory, Co. Kerry where lessons for beginners cover surfing fundamentals and technique. For experienced surfers, there is a great opportunity to charge some of the Atlantic Ocean’s most renowned breaks along the Wild Atlantic Way. Early in the New Year, UCC Surf Club embark on an International Trip which have taken us to places as far as Taghazout in Morocco and Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands! This usually takes place for a week in early January before the second semester begins and, once again, is to open to everyone, no matter what level you’re at. These types of trips allow members to experience new cultures, make new friends and surf in some of the most amazing places on Earth! The club committee consists of ten people across all standards, and every year a first-year representative is chosen to join the committee at our AGM. This is a great opportunity for first years to put forward any ideas they may have and is a brilliant way to get more involved in extracurricular activities that contribute to the college experience. So, what are you waiting for? Take the plunge, get barrelled and join us in the ocean to experience the Olympic’s newest sport!

Swimming and Waterpolo Based in the Mardyke Arena, UCC Swimming & Waterpolo is at the heart of student life in UCC. We cater for the students of UCC who wish to continue swimming to a high level where our season culminates every year in a weekend away for intervarsities. The season also includes several masters galas and other university invitationals. We are very lucky to be coached by two of Cork’s finest swimming coaches, Head Coach Diarmuid Herlihy is a former open water swimming record holder on the straits of Gibraltar and Emeritus Professor Tom Cross who is perhaps Corks best known swimming coach with over 40 years of coaching experience. We are thrilled to be represented internationally by Sean O’Riordan. Sean, who is a para athlete has represented Ireland at the European Para Championships and is currently in training with a goal of attending Tokyo 2021 to compete in the Paralympics. UCC Water polo is a great avenue for those who wish to play water polo to a competitive level while maintaining a fun and relaxed atmosphere, although you’ll have to be tough and willing to take the occasional kick to the gut! Water polo, like swimming culminates in the inter-varsity competition hosted by another Irish University. All the necessary equipment is provided at our training sessions. As swimming and waterpolo can be restrictive in terms of talking while training we endeavour to have a social evening monthly so everyone can catch up and get to know each-other outside of the pool. UCC Swimming & Waterpolo is a great club to keep active while at the same making friends and getting the most out of your time in UCC. If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact us on Facebook (UCC Swimming & Waterpolo) or email us at swimmingandwaterpolo@uccclubs.ie

Trampoline and Tumbling Whether you have a background in trampolining and tumbling, have a trampoline in your garden that you use once every few months, or even have no experience with the sport but are looking for something new and fun to try out, UCC Trampoline and Tumbling Club is the club for you! Our members train and compete at all different levels and new members are always welcome. Our dedicated and friendly coaches will guide you through the different skills and techniques while other members cheer you on. The atmosphere of the club is very welcoming and you won’t feel like a newcomer for long! You might be wondering what is involved in trampolining and tumbling. There’s a lot more to these disciplines of gymnastics than one would originally think. Starting with trampolining, we practice Olympic-style trampolining which involves performing a combination of acrobatic skills in the air – this includes jumps and somersaults in different shapes and with different rotations and twists. These skills can be landed on the feet, front or back. Tumbling involves performing a series of skills on a sprung track with only the feet and hands making contact with the ground (and preferably always landing on the feet!!). Trampolining is quickly growing in popularity across Ireland and the UK with seven student clubs across Ireland. Members of UCC Trampoline and Tumbling Club have many opportunities to make friends with members of these other clubs at competitions. We attend a minimum of four competitions a year, three in Ireland and one abroad. These competitions never fail to be a highlight of the year. Members have a chance to show off the routines they’ve been working hard on and celebrate their progress and achievements. Members make wonderful memories on these trips - there is always time for sight-seeing and experiencing the social scene of the area. Of course, trampolining and tumbling are great for general health – both physical and mental – and the overall experience is exhilarating and fun. But for those of you who are competitive, we also enjoy a lot of competitive success. The club has gone from strength to strength in the last few years, most notably winning every competition we were eligible to win during the ‘18/’19 year. Even new members have a chance to win individual awards and medals. Be sure to check out our Instagram and Facebook pages to see training and competition videos and pictures, as well as all the different charity events we hold throughout the year. Our normal term training times are Monday 5-7pm, Wednesday 5-7pm and Thursday 4:30-7pm – follow our social medias to keep up-to-date. We look forward to seeing more new faces at training!

Ultimate Frisbee Ultimate Frisbee is a sport that combines the non-stop movement and endurance of soccer, the agility of basketball, the aerial passing and team tactics of American Football, and the constant, manic action of hurling. Ultimate is played 7 a-side outdoors and 5 a-side indoors, on a pitch with scoring zones at either end. What makes Ultimate unique is the importance of the Spirit of the Game, which holds each and every player responsible for fair play and mutual respect. Last year marked UCC Ultimate’s 21st anniversary. Since our founding, we have grown into one of the largest student-run clubs and also one of the most successful. We compete in the Men’s, Women’s and Mixed divisions, with excellent results across all three in the past year - notably our women’s side winning their 7th Outdoor Intervarsities title in a row. Our success stretches back across the years and has given us a reputation as the team to beat in Ireland. Besides competing at the intervarsity level, our members have the opportunity to play at a national level alongside various clubs all over the country, as well as internationally. Each year members of our club join the ranks of the Irish national teams (Juniors, U24s, Seniors), competing at European and World Championships in places like Germany, Italy and Canada. This club isn’t all work and no play. A stand-out feature of the club is the openness and accepting nature of its members, especially to first-years and new members. Every week there are events organised for everyone to participate in. We pride ourselves on being a club where you are not only guaranteed to learn a new and exciting sport, but make new friends for life. Follow us on social media to keep up with training times and events, and feel free to message the Facebook page or email us if you have any questions. Come join us - we guarantee that it will be the highlight of your time here in college!

Come around and join us! You will work on your critical thinking and social skills besides engaging in physical activities that allow you to become a great team member. The volleyball club has three divisions: beginners, intermediated and advanced allowing anybody to join, independent of their experience.
