Car Sharing
You can list your destination and timing along with your contact details; send to claire@carletondirectory.co.uk
Dear Neighbours Hello again,
It seems a long time since the last Christmas Directory, but here I am back again, with an all new, all shiny Carleton Directory. It was thanks to all your messages of support that those nice people at AQA Magazines decided to step in at a time of difficulty and save the Directories. I can’t state how grateful I am for all cards, phone calls, letters and emails I received and it was great to see how well liked the Directories were.
Emma is now in charge of all advertising...and yours truly retains the Editorship. A major change you will already have noticed is the new A4 format, the Directory will also now be a bi-monthly magazine with a host of new features which you can get involved with. . . FRONT COVER – Why not send in your local photographs—something really interesting locally please! WHO’S WHO – See page 11. WHAT’S ON – your events?
Indeed, if you wish to donate or submit a short article on any useful localinterest topic or event, please continue to send these, preferably by email to: claire@carletondirectory.co.uk
Due to popular demand for continuity there was a real hurry to get the new edition out, however that has not prevented them from containing the usual mix of local business, competitions, bus time tables, councillors’ newsletters and useful information.
Statistically it has been shown that over half of car drivers would share a car to work if they knew someone suitable to travel with. So what can we do? Today on the roads:
Traffic has increased by over 60% since 1980.
Cars are the biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions.
Congestion costs the UK £19 billion a year. Public transport costs are rising.
With 10 million empty seats on the road every year and so many of us travelling in the same direction we thought perhaps some of you would like to share some costs.
The benefits of car sharing are great!
These are many reasons to car share; reduced costs, reduced congestion and pollution and improved access in areas with limited public transport. Indeed if average car occupancy was to increase by 10% - with 1.74 persons per car on average - this would reduce traffic on our roads by 9%.
Are there any other community car sharing schemes?
One successful group is the “Rusty Vehicle Sharing Group” which began as far back as 1976 in Leicester. A group of neighbours originally decided that they could share a rusty vehicle. However, today the cars are of a much better quality and the group has gone from strength to strength.
If you are interested in possibly arranging a car share or are looking to find one of those 10 million empty seats this magazine will be opening its pages to you! ...for example:
If you are a local business and you wish to advertise in the next edition please contact Emma to discuss various types of advertising and promotion; she can help you get the most from your marketing budget. Emma is contactable either at: emma@aqamagazines.co.uk or on 01228 592942 or 0797 27 189 31

Back to Healthy Living with Carol Westmorland
I
t seems unfair that those who put their bodies through torturous pastimes for pleasure can sail along with no more than a need to sleep and eat more and can bounce back from injury whilst those who lead gentle, sedate lives can be floored by a simple daily task without warning. Perhaps that is the very point.
Personally I have no problem accepting heavy legs the day after a particularly good bike ride. Most sports come with the inevitable risk of injury with cycling no exception but the rewards outweigh the risk. Expecting the odd spill comes with the game. With hindsight avoiding icy roads and large hedge cuttings could have prevented many of my resident aches. Participating in sport is probably one of the few remaining activities where the person is allowed to perform their own risk assessment. I love that release and loath the anxious society we are heading towards.
I’m certain that the body rather likes having something to do. Without a challenge the smaller stabilising muscles simply drift off and become dormant. It is perhaps little wonder then that if we perform a task day in day out and do little else at some point the body will rebel. We constantly reach forward but do we bend back? I can answer for the majority and say ‘no’.
Over the many years of teaching Pilates, now entering into the tenth, I have taken an enormous dollop of happiness when a real difference is made to someone who has taken it upon themselves to reach out for help. Our

backs are fantastically made until we get at them. Made up of 22 pieces of varying sizes and cushioned by shock absorbers we take them very much for granted and we shouldn’t.
In my experience an event will trigger a slight niggle that generally disappears over a day or two. Our memories then fade and normal daily habits return and therein the problem begins. That little niggle may change the way we hold our posture. To begin with in such a small way it may be barely noticeable. Over time we adapt and cease to use many of those stabilising muscles. Our bodies are wonderful machines but they do need to be kept in fine tune. When everything works in sync we can control small aches and pains. What is more we can find them before
they manifest into something much more unnecessary. Prevention is very often the cure. We all, regardless of age and fitness, need some degree of fine tuning. Pilates is like no other form of movement. It helps everybody. One of the things it does time and time again is give confidence in those who have felt so rotten they have lost sight of how it feels to ‘move’ with any degree of ease. An hour of being strengthened, lengthened and loosened is such a tonic that bottled it would be worth a fortune. Carol Westmorland

Following enquiries, we have been advised by the developer, that this will be done within two weeks. The reason for the delay has been due to legal procedures.
We are aware that there are residents who regularly use the gate to get access to the fields beyond and understandably, they regret the decision to remove it. Alternative access to the lane via the gate on Cumwhinton Drive, is just a few minutes walk.

This issue is often raised with us. We contacted Capita who advise us that the estates built by Barratts and Persimmon are about to be adopted, when the snagging is complete. The Story estates are not yet in ‘maintenance’ which eventually leads to adoption. There is some major sewer remedial work to be done.

We left you to sort out the cleaning of the carpet & suite whilst we went off to do some shopping and have a meal. We returned early afternoon to find that the carpet was like new, the pile had recovered and we could walk with a spring in our step once again. Over an almost three year period of quite heavy traffic, the springiness had all but disappeared, we now walk on a cushion of air. The fact that the carpet was dry, whereas when we had carpets cleaned before they had remained damp for some time, was really a revelation; it really looks and feels new. The suite had suffered the rigours of five years including a house move and having our family living here for some time last year that too is like a new suite. Hello everyone,
NHS AND PRIVATE PATIENTS WELCOME
t is so good to be back in the Carleton Directory and writing to you all.
Personal Attention Guaranteed Prescription sunglasses complete from £99 and great offers on lenses that change with the light
Hearty congratulations to Claire and Kieran who have been quite remarkable and managed to restore the magazines to the area very quickly indeed. Well done to you both for being brave enough to keep going, good on ya!
I must say when I got the distressing news in January that the magazines were no longer going to be produced, I was very upset for both of Claire and Kieran and for the readers, who I know value the Directories and the information regarding local businesses and local issues in our area. Running your own business is a huge responsibility and must be very challenging on a daily basis. These are very difficult times we are living in, with a global economic crisis showing no mercy to the majority of people, as either employers or the employed – not unless you happen to be a high flyer in banking, for either Northern Rock or HBOS for example, where of course you may be in line for a fat £12,500 per week pension for life, or even a nice little bonus payout, thank you very much – all this for poor management performance, high risk investments with other peoples money, total lack of consideration for the tax payer, and sticking your head in the sand when the sudden realisation of it all comes home to roost! During this time I was able to give more thought about my own communication styles within the ward and how to improve upon it, so have now invested in a web site of my own. It is not fully operational yet as it is being built up for me. Many folk across the ward are on line and prefer to contact me via email so this seemed an obvious solution to get the service organised.
Communicating across the ward is such a vital part of frontline counselling and enabling different ways of achieving this has got to be a priority. Of course, I know this doesn’t suit everyone and I will continue to write as much as possible. I will advise of the new web address in the next edition of The Carleton Directory, which is now to be produced bi-monthly.

Painter & Decorator Much has happened since the last publication of the Carleton Directory.
In December 2008, planning permission was granted for the erection of a new building, providing eight new lovely homes for people suffering from Cerebral Palsy. There are two other designated areas for new buildings within the city, thus enabling all the residents from Scalesceugh Hall to re-locate, which have also been agreed by the local authority.
‘I know that you will make them welcome’
It is anticipated that the new residents will be moving to the area in 2010, when the building is expected to be complete. Scalesceugh Hall is no longer a suitable residence and cannot continue to meet modern day needs of those living there. The residents from the Hall are so looking forward to becoming part of the wider community and I know that you will make them welcome when the time finally arrives. I will be taking a keen interest on any progress and will of course keep you informed. Thank you. District Councillor Nicola Clarke

Peas Please
L
John Penn
W
e have one of the top performing musicians of the last 15 years in the Canary Islands on our doorstep in Pennine View.
"How luscious lies the pea within the pod." Emily Dickinson
ast year my son picked his first fresh pea pod and it definitely wasn’t the last one that he was going to pick that day!
It was the sounds of J i m i Hendrix and Van Halen that created the desire in John to pick up his first guitar. W h i l s t some of Jimi’s guitars may have met a premature end, John has formed a lasting bond with his “Godin” Guitar which has followed him across the sea.
It wasn’t just the enjoyment at the crack of the fresh pod opening, and it wasn’t the discovery of several full bodied tempting peas to pick, nor was it the satisfying pop as each one was eased from its comfortable bed. It was the revelation of the taste and that fantastic difference between freshly grown and shop-bought peas.
To me the taste brought back memories of Summer days in my dad’s allotment, picking peas in the shade. A good handful of pea pods later it was decided that 2009 would be the year of the Pea in our household.
Now with the added impetus of healthy living and the credit crunch, growing your own seems the natural thing to do.
Probably the trickiest thing in Carlisle is to try and find a nice sunny part of the garden to grow your harvest. However, luckily peas can handle some of the partial shade we have come to expect. ...that fantastic difference between freshly grown and shop-bought peas...
Sowing should be done anywhere between March and June with the waiting time to your first luscious pea being only 12 weeks away. Whilst it is possible to sow directly, you can take the indoor option and use peat pots or some wet kitchen towel and a windowsill to start them off. It really is that simple, however you must remember that whether sowing direct or planting your seedlings, pea roots are likely to grow deep. It is best to give them about an inch of depth with two inches of space. Bonemeal is an added bonus at this point and it means your little harvest will need no more feeding. Handy Hint – Soak pea seeds in a little water for a few hours before sowing
page 6
With 15 days before your seedlings appear you must remember that juicy peas need moisture, and they should be constantly watered if conditions become dry. As your beloved plants now begin to grow they may be reaching out for a little support. This is best given in the form of canes, and if you feel they need a little extra perhaps consider some netting.
Handy Hint – Look like a professional gardener and pinch out the plants when they reach the top, this encourages healthy lower growth.
Luckily for my son peas are at there best when immature, for him this means he won’t have to wait too long after first spying the growing pods. Picking early also encourages the plant to produce even more juicy goods. Selecting from the bottom upwards is also recommended as these peas are the ones which are ready first. Handy Hint – To keep that fresh taste, pick just before cooking as peas will quickly gain that unwanted shop bought taste once harvested. Finally, remember to enjoy them, whether fresh from the pod or freshly blanched. You will taste no better, just ask my son!

With his love of 70s rock John first performed at a friend’s party at the age of 16 but it was on the sun soaked beaches of Tenerife where he performed in front of 1000s and to the acclaim of Rick Wakeman of ‘Yes’ fame. It was at a major ‘Battle of the Bands’ competition and up against numerous bands over a number of days John emerged victorious thanks to his self penned song “Let it go”.
John went on to play in all the island’s top venues including Veronicas, Linekers, Dubliner, The Rock Cafe and The Soul cellar.
We can now hear his music at a number of local hotspots. Whilst his Sunday Unplugged acoustic set at The Office is a particular favourite he also heads a local 3 piece band ‘Big Foot’ formerly known as ‘The Waves’. It is also possible to book John for your wedding or party— as an experienced DJ, John is able to provide you with a full evening's music. If you want to hear or see more, visit www.johnpenn-singer.com By the way, his next acoustic set is at The Office on the 29th March – see you there….
Bluebird Home Care Opens I
Care in your own home...
t was a special landmark on Thursday 5th March as the Mayor of Carlisle, Jacqueline Geddes officially opened Bluebird Care at their premises at Fisher Street in Carlisle.
Hosting the event was owner John Donald, his lovely wife Sandie along with Bluebird Development manager Lorna Liny. Guests included local business people as well as clients who are already benefiting from the superior care being offered by Bluebird. John is convinced his “Old fashioned Service” will be in great demand as he offers, in his words, “The Care you need in the home you love”
We at The Carleton directory wish John and his team much success for the future—you can contact Jonathan Donald on 591131 or by email on carlisleanddumfries@bluebirdcare.co.uk

I am appealing for residents to become involved with the scheme, so we can tackle this problem together, you will be trained to use the radar guns to track speeding motorists of which details will then be passed on to the police to deal. Welcome once again,
ell it’s great to be back involved with the magazine as I am sure most of you will agree it’s been sadly missed. I appreciate having the page every month, it’s my way of keeping you up to date with the work we are doing in and around the area. Community Speedwatch Scheme
In my last issue I touched on Speedwatch, well I am happy to announce it is working very well. We now have several speed co-ordinators in place. The response to become involved was greatly appreciated and it just shows that you are as passionate about speeding as me. We currently have 6 officers now at Welsh Road police station trained in the radar gun and have frequently been employing it in several hot spot areas which you the community have pointed out to us. The feedback last week which we received from the Neighbourhood Forum was very pleasing, however I must stress that 70% of drivers who are being stopped regarding their manner of driving are from the estate themselves which I find extremely disappointing. I can only repeat what I said in a press release recently that the “Education Now Stops and Enforcement begins”.
‘70% of drivers who are being stopped regarding their manner of driving are from the estate’
Often motorists who speed through residential neighbourhoods are unaware of the impact their actions have on other road users or the danger they pose!
Please support me in this matter, by working together we can reduce this problem and you can have a much safer community which to live in.
Angela Busby 5220 The SID device has also been reinstalled on Garlands Road to alert drivers of their speed. Please do not complain if you are stopped and fined as there have been plenty of warnings! NEW ROLE
Just to make you aware that at the end of May 2009 I will be leaving to start my training to become a Police Officer, so should you have any issues regarding anything please make contact with me now, so I can begin to investigate them? You will however have a new PCSO in the area and all issues will be passed on. This will be a very emotional time for me as I have thoroughly enjoyed working on my patch becoming involved with community issues and especially my Speedwatch campaign which began recently. Building relationships is a major part of my role and I have met some wonderful people along the way, I have to say it has been a pleas-
ure to serve you, but I am off to achieve a lifetime’s ambition and very much looking forward to it. I will keep you updated regarding your new PCSO in further issues. THOUGHT OF THE MONTH

ou will be acutely aware of the economic problems throughout the world, with the current banking crisis and so called ‘credit crunch’, not to mention the dreaded “R” word as we enter what could be a deep and prolonged recession.
In this climate there is an upturn in people looking for good independent financial advice in respect of their finances. One of the most important pieces of advice we give our clients is to start with a ‘spring clean’ of their finances.
The most important part of any financial planning is to draw up a budget and closely look at all aspects of monthly expenditure... most people are very surprised when they see how their money gets spent each month. You must earn more than you spend, as this is the single biggest threat to your finances, and we suggest the following categories to analyse your spending: • In your Home • Insurance
• Eating & Drinking
• Motoring and Travel
• Card and Loan repayments • Family & Childcare
• Savings & Investments • Leisure 21 Warwick Road Carlisle t: 01228 599770
www.chameleonfashions.co.uk
• Health & Beauty • Clothes
• Education & Courses • Big One Offs
• Odds & Sods
You should compare prices for utilities and food and ensure that there is no expenditure that you would deem unnecessary. Good ideas to improve your situation:
• Sell an old thing for every new one you buy eBay... car boot sales...? • Leave credit and debit cards at home – only take cash then you won’t be tempted to overspend.

• Sleep on it – you often don’t want things as much the next day. • Keep a list of your debts in your wallet – you will be reminded every time you open it! • Accept help.
• Think of credit cards as debt cards – the banks money, not yours. • Pay yourself pocket money - pay bills and give yourself pocket money.
• Avoid shops then you can’t be lured into spending money. • Stick loose change in a savings jar – it soon adds up. • Make your own at home – pizza, beer, etc. • Use eBay to rent short term items at low cost. • Have a ‘no-spend day.
• Organise nights-in for friends and family rather than going out.
• Don’t take the kids to the supermarket - do your shopping online and you will only buy what you need.
Many areas of expenditure can be reviewed by an Independent Financial Adviser and advice given on perhaps reducing mortgage payments, life cover requirements, House and Contents Insurance, savings schemes and pension payments. They can also help with potential tax planning. It is also important that you plan for the future as we all hope to retire some day and for most people they would like to do this as early as possible so planning needs to start as early you can.

Speedwatch volunteers wanted.
I am appealing for residents to become involved with the scheme, so we can tackle this problem together, you will be trained to use the radar guns to track speeding motorists of which details will then be passed on to the police to deal. To sign up for the scheme please contact me on 07807000259 or email me at the address below.
W

Peas Please
L
John Penn
W
e have one of the top performing musicians of the last 15 years in the Canary Islands on our doorstep in Pennine View.

"We just want to thank you for the amazing difference your process has made to the carpet in our lounge and dining room.

Site A: Beech Lodge /Burnamwood (14 dwellings)
No current proposals for Field D, to the Motorway, except for a bund possibly joining with the existing one to deal with traffic noise. Field E, to Cumwhinton Rd, no current proposals.
The three large Victorian buildings to be converted as in the previous schemes, and the trees will remain a feature of the development. Potential traffic issues for local road network are identified.
