y the daytime time mild mannered multi functional Quantity Surveyor Eddie Ward may look like your typical employee however come the end of the working day Eddie steps into a different world. A world of extremes, or “xtremes” as his group, Ayers Explorer Scouts, like to call them, be it surfing, Scuba Diving, White Water rafting or to wrap it up Xtreme Scouting. For Eddie it all began in 1988 when he applied for his Scout Leaders Warrant; at the age of 18 he became one of the areas youngest Scout Leaders in Carlisle. Four years later he formed a new Venture Scout Unit, the predecessor to t o d a y ’ s Explo r e r Scouts (for 14 to 18 year olds).

Contrary to the portrayal of teens in the contemporary press, there is something for them to do and in Carlisle they are doing it in ever increasing numbers. Eddie, ever dismissive of the press which still continues to label Scouting with its old imagery, has (alongside Scouting) embraced the social, personal and community changes of the 21st Century. With the support of his family; Kelly his wife and his sons, 4 year old Finley and 2 year old Mason who can regularly be seen with him at Explorer Scout activities Eddie continues to provide almost daily contact with his group and encourages Scouting in all its many formats. “Scouting has given me so much and it can give the same to everyone out there. It’s all about the adventure, fun and challenge. If those three ingredients are there we can’t go wrong”.

With 21 years of Scouting behind him not only is he the leader of the fastest growing Explorer Scout Unit but he is also Manager of the District Campsite at Ratlingate, he is

an active trustee of the District Scout Executive Committee and he is also County Scout Media Development Manager. Finding time to utilise all those social networking tools popular today he is helping to keep Scouting at the cutting edge of contemporary culture. He answered “It would be massively different; it would be less extreme for one”

Having raised tens of thousands of pounds for charities he received a community service award from Rotary International in 1997 for “helping and initiating recreational, social and educational activities for young people in the local community, and in particular his service to Scouting”. He has seen hundreds of teens pass through his group and he continues to gain in the same way his unit does. “We work together at our activities and if we didn’t gain positively from the outcomes we wouldn’t do it. Scouting offers adults a social life with a purpose, and as a Leader the chance to gain new skills, and have fun whilst helping other people.” Together they have recently supported the Eden Valley Hospice and only last week completed a 100 mile cycle to raise money for Watchtree Wheelers to provide adapted bikes for elderly, disadvantaged & disabled cycle users. continued on page 11

TONE EDEN NURSERY SCHOOL on the outskirts of Scotby village picked up two prestigious National Awards at a ceremony in London recently. The nursery ‘outgrew’ their old premises at Warwick-OnEden and relocated last year to its new purpose built nursery. It was then able to offer the local community a state of the art nursery on their doorstep.

The Awards are the latest success for the nursery who gained ‘Outstanding’ in all areas of its recent OFSTED inspection. The rural location has enabled the owners, Jenn and David Farrell, to incorporate a ‘Learning Orchard’, playing field and a 30 space car park for the convenience of parents. The ‘Business Development Award’ highlighted these factors as well as the

HE GOVERNOR OF THE BANK of England recently signalled that interest rates are unlikely to rise in the short term, which is good news for borrowers coming up to Christmas, however it is bad news for savings in cash. There is £554bn on deposit in UK Savings Accounts plus a further £79bn held in cash ISA’s. A Survey by SAGA recently showed almost 61% of savers do not even know what rate of interest they are obtaining on their account with less than 25% checking their interest rate even once a year. Many people are unaware of the losses they will potentially make by not placing their money in the right place. It may be that people that are relying on their savings to provide them with income and they will have noticed a significant drop in their income since the Base Rate started to fall at the end of 2008. Also those people who were lucky enough to fix in at higher rates last year in one year deposits will have found that interest rates available on the maturity of these monies is significantly less than when they took them out.

So what next for savers?

The 6th of October saw some important enhancements to ISA’s. Clients aged 50 and over (on or before the 5/4/2010) can now invest £10,200 into their ISA in this tax year.

People who are able to tie their money up for a longer period may be able to consider alternative investments like ISA’s, and they should contact an Independent Financial Adviser and ask for a review of their current financial situation.

Obviously some other types of investments carry a greater degree of risk, however with Stock Markets around the world having shown significant increases in recent weeks, returns have been considerably higher than cash and investors may wish consider the alternatives to deposit accounts earning little interest. However, they should always take expert advice before investing and remember that the value of investments can go down as well as up.

In season at the moment are Jerusalem artichokes, these make perfect soups & purees. They have a rich earthy flavour which makes this soup a must.

Jerusalem Artichoke Soup Serves 4

6 Shallots - finely chopped 2 Cloves Garlic - finely chopped 2lb Jerusalem artichokes - peeled & sliced 11/2 pints Fresh warm chicken stock 500ml Double cream 200g Wild mushrooms - sliced Olive oil White truffle oil Salt & pepper 1) Add some olive oil to a heavy based pan and sweat off the shallots and garlic until they are soft.

2) Add the Jerusalem artichokes and sweat off until soft as well, 3) Add the warm chicken stock and bring to the boil, then add the cream 4) Add salt & pepper and correct the seasoning then blitz in a food processor 5) Add some olive oil to a frying pan and sweat off the wild mushrooms until light golden brown (Do not add too many at one time as they will go soggy and wont colour) 6) Pour the soup into warmed soup bowls, sprinkle some wild mushrooms on top and pour a little white truffle oil on to finish. 7) Serve and enjoy!

‘NewYear’Origins Jan 1st marking the celebration of the New Year is a relatively new idea. The earliest recording celebration of the New Year has been traced as far back as 2000 B.C. in Babylon where it was celebrated on Dec 25th which marked the death of the god Osiris (Nimrod) and the re-birth of him as his son Horus, symbolised by a dead ‘Yule’ log and a fresh Tree, also connected with the re-birth of the Sun. The first time the New Year was celebrated on January 1st was in Rome in 153 B.C., only because it marked the start of the civil year where the highest ranking Roman Officials (Consuls) began their one year term of office, and they named the month January after Janus who had 2 faces, one looking forward and one looking back. Dec 25th was used as ‘Saturnalia’ after the god Saturn, and associated with Sun worship and gifts. In the middle ages New Year celebrations were considered pagan and un-Christian and in 567 January 1st was removed as the beginning of the year. Instead the new year was celebrated on Dec. 25 again! The Germans moved theirs to March 25th to link with established pagan fertility rites, and most Catholic countries changed to Jan 1st in 1582... it was only gradually accepted among Protestant countries, and the UK did conform until 1752.

We started out with the one minibus and now due to demand we run four minibuses and a new forty nine seater coach. So why the jump into running your own business? It was an easy choice to make. After driving locally and internationally for different organisations we thought why drive for somebody else when we can do it so much better ourselves and provide the customer a much more personal service. So what are the benefits to working for yourself?

Well besides the satisfaction of knowing we can give our customers the best service…we also get to enjoy our days off, today on my day off I cleaned all four buses and the coach. What did you do before you were driving? I passed my driving test on my 17th birthday but before I started driving professionally, myself and Judy were touring musicians, myself a keyboard player for 25 years and Judy a singer. Having toured nationally, completing six month cruises and taking in such places as Denmark, Greenland and Copenhagen we definitely have a strength in knowing our way around. What music do you like to listen to when you drive? Having played so much music my tastes are pretty varied. Anything from the 60s through to the 90s is pretty much fine by me. Modern Dance music though is not something I would choose when driving.

Are you more than just a local company? Of course, to date we have taken people as far away as Devon and the Isle of Skye. So have there been any memorable travelling groups? One group who stand out were a group who were travelling for a weekend stop in Skegness. They were all dressed up as redcoats with the organiser the chief redcoat. The journey down was a whole evening of laughs with a great group full of life. But when I picked them up a couple of nights later they were like Zombies.

For Eddie the extreme activities and enjoyment will keep on coming, as will the eager teens. “There are so many but it’s difficult to turn anyone away, knowing what they will miss out on”. For the good of our communities and for the good of our children it is to people like Eddie and the other unsung Scout Leaders we owe thanks for the time they unselfishly devote.

SANTA THE LEGEND

It would be a difficult task to meet someone who has not heard of Santa Claus in any of his many guises around the world. His image is renown to children and adults alike everywhere but where does his story begin? We have to go back hundreds of years ago to a place which is now in modern day Turkey. Here a monk who is now recognised as St Nicholas was born around the third century A.D. The stories of his pious and kind nature where he travels the countryside giving away his wealthy inheritance have inspired many legends.

One such story of St.Nicholas is of when he saved three sisters from a life of slavery by providing each of them with a dowry so that they each could be married. Over the years and with many such tales St. Nicholas’s name became well known and he became known as a protector of children. Even now on the 6th December the anniversary of his death is still widely celebrated around the world. By the time of the Renaissance he had become the most popular Saint in Europe and the date has become associated with being a lucky day of the year to make major life decisions. St Nicholas may have formed the beginnings for Santa Claus but where does his iconic image originate.

Well we have to look back nearly 200 years to 1822 and a poem called “An Account of a Visit from St Nicholas” written by Clement Moore, an Episcopal minister. The poem which was written for his three daughters paints the original picture of our modern day Santa as a chubby fella with a knack for magic and being a “right jolly old elf”.

Today it is recognised that Moore may have taken some of his influences from elsewhere but his image of Santa waiting for all the good children to fall asleep before he visits them on Christmas Eve in a sleigh pulled by “Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen, and Rudolph” to deliver toys and gifts is now one with which we are all familiar. Some 60 years later illustrator Thomas Nast used Moore’s poem as influence to create an image of Santa that is still familiar today. His cartoon impression showed off Santa as a portly, joyful man with his bright red outfit and typical long white beard and sack of elf made toys. With a little creative license Santa also gained Mrs Claus and a North Pole workshop where he still works to this day! Illustration by Thomas Nast
