It was thanks to all your messages of support that those nice people at AQA Magazines decided to step in at a time of difficulty and save the Directories. I can’t state how grateful I am for all cards, phone calls, letters and emails I received and it was great to see how well liked the Directories were.

Statistically it has been shown that over half of car drivers would share a car to work if they knew someone suitable to travel with. So what can we do? Today on the roads:

Traffic has increased by over 60% since 1980.

Cars are the biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions.

Congestion costs the UK £19 billion a year. Public transport costs are rising.

With 10 million empty seats on the road every year and so many of us travelling in the same direction we thought perhaps some of you would like to share some costs.

The benefits of car sharing are great!

These are many reasons to car share; reduced costs, reduced congestion and pollution and improved access in areas with limited public transport. Indeed if average car occupancy was to increase by 10% - with 1.74 persons per car on average - this would reduce traffic on our roads by 9%.

Are there any other community car sharing schemes?

One successful group is the “Rusty Vehicle Sharing Group” which began as far back as 1976 in Leicester. A group of neighbours originally decided that they could share a rusty vehicle. However, today the cars are of a much better quality and the group has gone from strength to strength.

er other activities are based in Wetheral and include Fitness Instructor teaching Pilates, Yoga, Circuits, Steps, Aerobics, Bums n Tums, Aqua. Also a Member of Triathlon Club, Marathon and HalfMarathon Runner, Tennis. She was amazed to win two competitions last year and just couldn't believe being asked to represent Britain in Germany. This has given her the inspiration to enter again this year. This can be a very expensive and time consuming sport and she says she is extremely grateful to Energy Solutions who were kind enough to sponsor last year. She was also supported by Rob Carey ‘Mr Scotland’ with his training programme, and also the team at Bodytek.

Her diet has to be very disciplined and involves starting the day with chocolate porridge then eating every two hours with the correct balance of protein, carbohydrates and fat, also taking supplements of vitamin C, multivitamins and cod liver oil.. she prefers to compete naturally so doesn’t take additional substances... this can apparently be difficult when members bring in cakes and chocolates for staff...!

Luckily her closest friends are either fitness instructors or interested in fitness so the people around her are very understanding when she has to say ‘no’. She believes everyone should have goals in life and right now this is hers. She wishes you good luck with yours.

Chef’s Notes with Fraser Souter of the Crown Hotel

Peppered Lamb Steaks with a tomato and courgette crushed potato salad

on't make lack of time the excuse for not cooking a good dinner this only takes 20 mins. Lakeland Lamb is coming into season, offering great local produce at good prices and tasting great... Ingredients:

2 x 6-8oz Lamb Steaks, 8-10 Pre boiled New Potatoes 2 Large Courgettes, 8-10 Cherry Tomatoes,

Any soft herb of your choice, Garlic, and Horseradish Sauce

Chop the courgettes into large chunks, then boil or steam until tender, for about 5 minutes. Tip into a colander and lightly press out as much liquid as possible using a potato masher or fork, then chop the courgettes into smaller pieces.

Heat the oil in a pan, add the garlic and tomatoes, then fry briefly until the tomatoes are just softening. Stir in the courgettes and heat through, then add the chopped parsley or coriander and stir through. Keep warm.

Season the lamb steaks and grill for 3-4 mins each side. Serve with the tomato & courgette crush on the side.

Quick Lamb & Ginger Stir-fry Rub lamb steaks with Chinese five spice powder, grill as before. Finely slice courgettes, halve tomatoes & finely shred a small knob of ginger. Heat oil in a wok, add courgettes, tomatoes & ginger and stir-fry for about 3 minutes until the courgette starts to soften. Add the garlic, fry for 1 min, then splash in 2 tbsp soy sauce. Slice the lamb steaks and add to the pan just before serving, along with their juices. Scatter with coriander & serve with rice or noodles. Per serving:

Neighbourhood Watch Message

There have been a number of recent burglaries at rural premises where offenders have either forced entry, or entered through insecure doors/windows. The premises attacked have been rural post offices, pubs and small shops; and also a number of houses where keys to high value vehicles have been taken and the cars stolen. These offences have occurred throughout north and south Cumbria, and in southern Scotland. They are suspected to have been committed by travelling criminals who drive into the county in high performance vehicles, often bearing false number plates. The burglaries are generally occurring during the night or in the early hours of the morning. Schemes are asked to be particularly vigilant and report any suspicious activity around vulnerable premises, and also to ensure that all premises and vehicles are properly secure. My next allocation for funding commences in April and to date I have received a request for a litter bin on the B6263 at Wetheral Pasture and the layby at the bottom of Steel’s Bank. I would now like the Cotehill, Cumwhinton and Aglionby residents to put forward their schemes.

Wetheral Station is to be refurbished this year with the work commencing on April 5th. The footbridge will be closed for a period of time whilst it is repaired and painted in the livery colours of the Hadrian franchise, maroon and cream. Lighting will be significantly improved and the weeds/ rubbish removed. Completion is anticipated within 12 weeks.

Dog Fouling – I have received

numerous complaints from Ward residents about the irresponsible attitude of some dog owners who allow their canine friends to foul areas within the 30 mph limits and fail to pick it up. As a retired Veterinary Surgeon may I point out that not only is it illegal to do this, with a fine of £75, but that it is exceedingly annoying to the public and dangerous as it can cause a serious disease especially in children known as Toxocariosis. This condition can lead to blindness due to the migrating larvae locating within the eye.

As a member of the Executive of Carlisle City Council a number of people have asked me what my Portfolio entails. The title is “Learning and Development” but this involves not only Member and Staff learning but also HR (850 Staff), I.T., Museums (Tullie House and The Guildhall), the Arts, Emergency Planning, Health and Safety, Legal and Democratic, Customer Services and even Polling arrangements. Carlisle City Council’s I.T. Service is in the process of becoming a Shared Service with Allerdale Borough Council. Tullie House could possibly become a not-for-profit Trust in the near future in order to access more funding than at present as part of the City Council.

The Council Staff Training programme has received many plaudits over the last few years and in March accepted the IdeA “Go Excellence Award” and the “Go Whole Organisation Approach Award”. Carlisle City Council became the first Authority in the Northwest to be given the “Get On Award” which recognises excellence in Skills for Life provision. ast year my son picked his first fresh pea pod and it definitely wasn’t the last one that he was going to pick that day!

It wasn’t just the enjoyment at the crack of the fresh pod opening, and it wasn’t the discovery of several full bodied tempting peas to pick, nor was it the satisfying pop as each one was eased from its comfortable bed. It was the revelation of the taste and that fantastic difference between freshly grown and shop-bought peas.

To me the taste brought back memories of Summer days in my dad’s allotment, picking peas in the shade. A good handful of pea pods later it was decided that 2009 would be the year of the Pea in our household.

Now with the added impetus of healthy living and the credit crunch, growing your own seems the natural thing to do.

Probably the trickiest thing in Carlisle is to try and find a nice sunny part of the garden to grow your harvest. However, luckily peas can handle some of the partial shade we have come to expect. ...that fantastic difference between freshly grown and shop-bought peas...

Sowing should be done anywhere between March and June with the waiting time to your first luscious pea being only 12 weeks away. Whilst it is possible to sow directly, you can take the indoor option and use peat pots or some wet kitchen towel and a windowsill to start them off. It really is that simple, however you must remember that whether sowing direct or planting your seedlings, pea roots are likely to grow deep. It is best to give them about an inch of depth with two inches of space. Bonemeal is an added bonus at this point and it means your little harvest will need no more feeding. Handy Hint – Soak pea seeds in a little water for a few hours before sowing

With 15 days before your seedlings appear you must remember that juicy peas need moisture, and they should be constantly watered if conditions become dry. As your beloved plants now begin to grow they may be reaching out for a little support. This is best given in the form of canes, and if you feel they need a little extra perhaps consider some netting.

Handy Hint – Look like a professional gardener and pinch out the plants when they reach the top, this encourages healthy lower growth.

Luckily for my son peas are at there best when immature, for him this means he won’t have to wait too long after first spying the growing pods. Picking early also encourages the plant to produce even more juicy goods. Selecting from the bottom upwards is also recommended as these peas are the ones which are ready first. Handy Hint – To keep that fresh taste, pick just before cooking as peas will quickly gain that unwanted shop bought taste once harvested. Finally, remember to enjoy them, whether fresh from the pod or freshly blanched. You will taste no better, just ask my son!

It was the sounds of J i m i Hendrix and Van Halen that created the desire in John to pick up his first guitar. W h i l s t some of Jimi’s guitars may have met a premature end, John has formed a lasting bond with his “Godin” Guitar which has followed him across the sea.

With his love of 70s rock John first performed at a friend’s party at the age of 16 but it was on the sun soaked beaches of Tenerife where he performed in front of 1000s and to the acclaim of Rick Wakeman of ‘Yes’ fame. It was at a major ‘Battle of the Bands’ competition and up against numerous bands over a number of days John emerged victorious thanks to his self penned song “Let it go”.

John went on to play in all the island’s top venues including Veronicas, Linekers, Dubliner, The Rock Cafe and The Soul cellar.

We can now hear his music at a number of local hotspots. Whilst his Sunday Unplugged acoustic set at The Office is a particular favourite he also heads a local 3 piece band ‘Big Foot’ formerly known as ‘The Waves’.
