Newlands Windfarm Update
Dear Neighbours H
opefully the arrival of this edition of the Village Link finds you basking in more of the great weather we enjoyed in the beginning of June. Hopefully this early sun won’t be reminiscent of last year where it spelt the end of an early summer. Nevertheless if the rain has returned pour yourself another coffee put your feet up and enjoy a flick through your Directory.
This month’s edition gives you the chance to win a £25 voucher to use at the excellent new premises of Picture U Studios or if you fancy a meal out then the Crossword sponsored by Botchergate Tandoori could be just what you’re looking for. Looking towards the summer sun, High Society tell us of the colours to be seen in and speaking of colours turn to our Bumblebee garden feature to find out which flowers can help bring back this quintessential friend. With the councillors letting us in on the local news, financial advice from Financial Concepts and the usual excellent mix of advertisers, what are you waiting for…put the kettle on and relax. Until next time .. Best Wishes Claire
We will endeavour to include as much of your relevant donated editorial as possible, but reserve the right to omit or edit as space requires; generally we will send a proof before publishing. Any views expressed are not necessarily shared by the publishers.

W
ith all the recent National and Local news regarding an upsurge in Windfarm applications in the North of England we thought we would have a little look into the current situation regarding the plans for the windfarm near Cumwhinton. As you may probably be aware the plans for the turbines and latterly the meteorological mast were rejected towards the end of 2008. Nevertheless it appears that the matter is not yet finished as it is currently reported at www.againstnewlandswindfarm.co.uk that the applicants have since lodged a written appeal. As a result the action group have successfully lobbied the inspectorate for a full public enquiry. As an opposition group they have also been granted rule 6 party status which means they have the right to both speak and be represented by relevant experts who will argue their case and test the developers’ evidence.
Fundraising events will soon be planned if you would like to show your support. We will keep you updated.
A personal plea from www.againstnewlands windfarm.co.uk
“As we need to employ the relevant experts to argue our case and test the developer’s evidence. We are talking about legal representation from planning lawyers, environmental impact assessment experts and so on. To cut to the point we now all need to donate to the cause to help us fight this appeal by using all the tools available.”
Please send all donations (cheques to Newlands Windfarm Action Group) to: Newlands Windfarm Action Group Cringles Farm Cumwhinton Carlisle CA4 8DL

Since my last report the City has proclaimed its new Mayor, Cllr Bill Graham, and my Portfolio has changed slightly from Learning and Development to Performance and Development. This entails overseeing the performance of the Local Authority and its Corporate Improvement Plan in addition to the Comprehensive Area Assessment. I will also be working closely with Development Control, the Standards Board and the Historic Quarter Steering Group which is part of Carlisle Renaissance.
The transformation of Wetheral Station, long overdue, is nearing completion and I anticipate the work will be finished by the 18th July. My thanks to all the users for their patience during this disruption. It may interest you to know that I have been a Wetheral Parish Councillor for 34 years, (Chairman 5 times) and one of the longest serving members. At the Annual General Meeting on the 13th May the Chairman informed the public that the Parish Council Offices in Wetheral were deemed unfit for purpose and asked whether they were in favour of renting premises or re-building, possibly on Wetheral Playing Field. The comments received will be discussed by the Council at their next meeting.
I dealt with the matter of dog fouling in the last edition and there has been a significant improvement. Now it’s LITTER. Dropping litter is an offence and carries a £75 fixed penalty fine. With the tourist season now in full swing I would like to see my Ward Villages free from plastic bottles, crisp packets, beer cans, takeaway cartons etc. We are fortunate to reside in a most beautiful corner of England and I would like to see litter-free verges and footways within the Parish. To this end, Kay my wife, and I with the help of friends, regularly collect the offending items. If anyone else would like to assist, please telephone me and I will acquire a litter picking stick for you. Last year Wetheral won the “Village Category” in the Cumbria in Bloom competition. Kay and Sue Oliver have entered the Village again and judging takes place between the 6th and 17th July. Here’s to a better Summer than last year. With kind regards

Gardens cover more than 1 million hectares of Britain, far exceeding the combined area of all our nature reserves. However, at present a lot of gardens are not especially friendly to wildlife. Many are covered with paving or decking, or are populated with exotic or highly cultivated garden flowers

One of the simplest things you can do to help your bumblebees is to leave an area of your lawn uncut during the summer. If you don't mow between late June and early August, your lawn will burst into flower with clovers and birds-foot trefoil.

Carol-Ann Ross
Y
ou may remember local resident Carol-Ann Ross from an earlier edition of the Carleton. With her friend and CoCommunity Staff nurse Karen Gill, the adventurous pair decided to recognise the work of our Macmillan Nurses and set about raising money by climbing Kilimanjaro. It may not be the easiest ways to raise money (of the 4000 people who attempt the climb each year only 1500 actually make it to the top) but the pair set about with a fervour in their attempts to raise at least £4000 each before beginning the ascent.
“...decided to recognise the work of our Macmillan Nurses and set about raising money by climbing Kilimanjaro...”
Not only were there the numerous charity events, quiz nights, bag packing and more to organise, but there was also the actual physical training to contend with. The climb to the peak of Kilimanjaro would take 5 days and at 5 times the height of Snowdon it is no easy feat, especially with a 30 litre bag! Whilst Carol-Ann hiked many summits in the lakes and completed days of walking on the East coast, you are more likely to have seen her on one of her favoured walks which at 3.5 miles took in Carleton Grange, Parklands and Scotby. Nearly a year after her training had began it was time for the big event. It was 20th February 2009 and she was ready. Meeting up with her walking group of 22 and the local guides who were expertly led by Ralph, the walk began. Life was about to change; with
blisters, long drop toilets, sub zero temperatures, no washing facilities, a diet of porridge, carbs and popcorn the days passed and the altitude sickness began to take its toll. At a height of 19000 feet oxygen levels drop and breathing naturally becomes more difficult. Whilst Karen was unfortunately turned away from the summit due to sickness, Carol-Ann and fourteen others made it to the top
and in her own words the sunrise made the 12 months of hard work all worthwhile,
“It was just magical. The sun rising in an amazing array of colours; the reds, the whites, the blues and a spectacular view over the glacier. It was just wonderful.”
After taking her fill of the newly formed day it was time for the descent which Carol-Ann found to be quite troublesome, with all attention being given to the climb the speedy descent was an unexpected difficulty.
Now safely home, it is all credit to Carol-Ann and her group, that save waiting for last minute donations the group may just raise £100,000 pounds. An amazing achievement and one of which she should be proud to have been part of.
Does successfully meeting such a difficult challenge change a person? Well Carol-Ann full of pride in her achievement believes she can now meet any challenge and who could argue the point, not me…So what next for our local explorer? You won’t be surprised to hear that she has her eyes set on the Arctic Challenge which involves 7 days of travel led by two ex-marines, all in aide of the Anthony Nolan trust. With travel by skidoo, sledging and foot we wish her all the best of luck. If you wish to recognise the sterling work of Carol-Ann and the Macmillan nurses please feel free to donate at www.justgiving.com/carolannross.

AAADD- KNOW THE SYMPTOMS.....PLEASE READ! Thank goodness there's a name for this disorder. Somehow I feel better, even though I have it!! Recently, I was diagnosed with A.A.A.D.D. Age Activated Attention Deficit Disorder. This is how it manifests: I decide to water my garden. As I turn on the hose in the driveway, I look over at my car and decide it needs washing. As I start toward the garage, I notice mail on the porch table that I brought up from the mail box earlier. I decide to go through the mail before I wash the car. I lay my car keys on the table, Put the junk mail in the garbage can under the table, And notice that the can is full. So, I decide to put the bills back On the table and take out the garbage first. But then I think, Since I'm going to be near the mailbox When I take out the garbage anyway, I may as well pay the bills first. I take my cheque book off the table, And see that there is only one cheque left. My extra checks are in my desk in the study, So I go inside the house to my desk where I find the cup of coffee I'd been drinking. I'm going to look for my cheques,
But first I need to push the Coffee aside So that I don't accidentally knock it over. The Coffee is getting cold, And I decide to make another cup. As I head toward the kitchen with the cold coffee, A vase of flowers on the counter Catches my eye--they need water. I put the Coffee on the counter and Discover my reading glasses that I've been searching for all morning. I decide I better put them back on my desk, But first I'm going to water the flowers. I set the glasses back down on the counter, Fill a container with water and suddenly spot the TV remote. Someone left it on the kitchen table. I realize that tonight when we go to watch TV, I'll be looking for the remote, But I won't remember that it's on the kitchen table, So I decide to put it back in the den where it belongs, But first I'll water the flowers. I pour some water in the flowers, But quite a bit of it spills on the floor. So, I set the remote back on the table, Get some towels and wipe up the spill. Then, I head down the hall trying to Remember what I was planning to do.

Then, when I try to figure out why nothing got done today, I'm really baffled because I know I was busy all darn day, And I'm really tired. nvestors are facing another year of difficult decisions with interest on bank accounts dropping to near zero levels. Interest on UK current accounts was recently reported to average 0.1%. With higher risks associated with equities and other asset classes like property and fixed interest, many investors are wondering where to go next in order to maximise the returns on their savings. It is coming clearer by the day that the current economic recession is likely to be deep and prolonged due to the extent of the ongoing deleveraging process in the consumer, corporate and financial sectors. Recovery even on a subdued basis is not looking likely until at least 2010. Presently for UK equities the average historic dividend yield relative to cash is close to a record high and suggests good equity value.
Before clients consider other asset classes in order to increase their income or potential capital growth it is strongly recommended that they take Independent Financial Advice to ensure that any investment meets their risk profile and that they fully understand the greater risks involved with Equities, property, fixed interest and commodities.
Look Beyond The Banks
Many people are still relying on their banks for advice on their investments without realising the advice is sometimes far from independent. We are all aware of the current state some of the banks are in because they haven't been able to manage their own risks yet they still ask their customers to trust them with their investments!

“...still relying on their banks for advice on their investments without realising...”
Sadly the days of having a local bank manager who looks after you personally have long gone and all staff from front line cashiers to Financial Advisers have sales targets to meet. To a bank, investment management is just another product to sell you. People should be aware there are so many other options but the most important thing is that they can get good quality independent financial advice from an independent adviser. A big concern is those retired people who have seen a drop of over 75% in the interest rates on their savings and we would urge these clients to find a good independent adviser and ask for a review.
If you are in a position where you rely on your savings for income or you are unhappy with current savings returns you may find a great deal of benefit in reviewing your current investment choices to either increase your income or grow your capital over the longer term. Please remember that other forms of investment carry a greater degree of risk and that the value of the investments can fall as well as rise and it is imperative that you seek advice prior to investing.

At the end of the day: The car isn't washed The bills aren't paid There is a cold cup of coffee sitting on the counter The flowers don't have enough water, There is still only 1 cheque in my cheque book, I can't find the remote, I can't find my glasses, And I don't remember what I did with the car keys. Then, when I try to figure out why nothing got done today, I'm really baffled because I know I was busy all darn day, And I'm really tired. I realize this is a serious problem, And I'll try to get some help for it, But first I'll check my e-mail.... Do me a favor. Forward this message to everyone you know, Because I don't remember who the xx I've sent it to. Don't laugh -- if this isn't you yet,
your day is coming!!

This needn't look untidy - make it an interesting shape, and border it with a mown path so that you can enjoy watching your bumblebees foraging away.

Best Wishes Claire

ith all the recent National and Local news regarding an upsurge in Windfarm applications in the North of England we thought we would have a little look into the current situation regarding the plans for the windfarm near Cumwhinton.
