Mother Nature Helps Park Transition to Picnic n’ Play Mecca

Pandemic aside, Mother Nature is doing her thing and drying out the park in time for families to venture out for some spring and summer fun. Whether it is a picnic, kicking a soccer ball around or flying a kite... the Dawson Trail Park would be a great day out. The portable skateboard park is slowly making its way into the Premier Tech Multiplex along with some basketball nets. The BMX hill, other than some final landscaping, is ready for the bikes! The Richer Community Club is working towards getting things set up for the community and visitors.

Dawson Trail Museum April 5 – Regular meeting at the museum at 1 pm May 1 – Spring Craft Market from 11 am to 4 pm in the museum May 10 – Regular meeting at the museum at 1 pm May 31 – Museum open hours are Tuesday, Thursday and Sat. 1pm to 4pm The Dawson Trail museum will hold their monthly meeting in the museum on April 5, at 1 pm. Mask up and follow the Covid protocol and social distance.

Annual Spring Craft Market will be held on May 1st, from 11 am to 4 pm at the museum. All social distancing and pandemic protocols will be followed. Check for updates as this may change. The Dawson Trail Museum Committee is looking for new board directors. If you have an interest to give back to your community and would like to know what it involves come and visit the museum. Bring your talent and ideas to the table where we can all work together.

Spirit of Richer Bursary Award

Guidelines!

The Spirit Award is given to a graduate who, in their time at the school, has captured the essence or spirit of what the community of Richer values.

It is offered as recognition of commitment to learning while giving to both the smaller school community as well as the larger community outside of school.

The following criteria are meant guidelines. The student who earns the award demonstrates the following qualities and characteristic!

• Demonstrates commitment to learning.

• Has had a minimum of 65% average in academic courses and / or has shown a growing improvement in academic courses over the year.

• Has demonstrated respectful behavior toward fellow learners, school staff, and to the members of the community at large.

• Has contributed positively by way of volunteerism to either the school and/or the larger community.

• Demonstrates that she/he plans to continue with some postsecondary education within the next school year. This may be through college, university, or some other form of formal training in a recognized educational institution or environment.

Requirements of the candidate interested in this award: • Must be a current student enrolled in school.

• Must write a brief autobiography demonstrating how/why he or she qualifies for the award including mention of their volunteerism.

• Must provide a brief character reference from an educator currently involved in the student’s school life or volunteer organization of whom they have worked with • A resident whom identifies themselves as from the community or Richer not limited to the town of Richer.

While it is suggested that these guidelines be followed each year, from time to time there may be special circumstances where exceptions might be made. Deadline for submitting applications is May 31, 2021.

Dedication Pergola Construction Underway A construction project is underway thanks in part to the grant previously awarded by Clearview Coop to the Richer Community Club to create a historical and interpretive aspect to the Dawson Trail park. The small general store is complete, the full size Metis Red River Cart is in the final stage of assembly, two handcrafted teepees were created and are in storage until community events can be hosted again, and now, construction has started on the front entrance Dedication Pergola. The pergola design will incorporate rough timber to reflect the historical industry, Manitoba natural wild flowers and a partial Red River Cart wheel layout. It will include a custom bronze plaque dedicated to the settlers of the area and a display board with brass plaques to honour the past, present and future supporters of the green space and community. A time capsule will also be imbedded in concrete to be scheduled for opening in the year 2070.

Further, a future plan will be to incorporate a Veterans’ memorial to honour the rural residents who served in the armed forces and paid the ultimate sacrifice.
