Richer’s Unstoppable Force By Red River College student, Nicole Brownlee Dan Guetre is seen as an unstoppable force in Richer. According to some community members, his dedication borders on “insane.” Not even a bout of kidney stones can keep Guetre from being involved. The night Guetre began treatment, he remembered he had
a community club meeting and without hesitation he snuck out of Ste. Anne Hospital and drove to Richer. “I was in my hospital pyjamas and I sat there and smiled through the whole thing,” says Guetre. “I never miss a community club meeting.” Guetre was first inspired to volunteer in his late teens when his father brought him to Black Bear Days, a beloved Richer festival. Now, Guetre carries his father’s spirit when he helps organize each of Richer’s community events, many of which could not be celebrated without Guetre’s contributions. To help his community he has shaved his head for cancer, raised over $400,000 for Richer’s ice rink covering, and immediately jumped on board and helped organize his own personal favourite festival, the annual Richer Rough Stock Rodeo. “It’s a privilege to be in a community where people care,” says Guetre. “It is easy when you have a bunch of people who stand beside you and not behind you.” While Guetre is planning, organizing, and fundraising for Richer, he also runs his own businesses, acts as president of the Dawson Trail Community Development Cooperation, and is a director of the
Dan Guetre with his grand daughter. He is hoping the generations following him commit some time to their community. His son has already jumped on board and sat beside him as they had their heads shaved raising money to help support those going through cancer treatment.
Richer Community Club and to ensure his sanity is never questioned he was the founding president of the Richer Daycare and a former board member of the Richer School Parent Advisory Committee. He was just awarded the Manitoba 150 Medal to recognize his efforts. Along with the medal, Guetre also receives $500 to donate to a non-profit group of his choice. “That was easy, the Richer Community Club was my choice,” said Guetre. “They are truly a dedicated group and are always here for the community.”

Life Is A Journey
By Ben Funk Festivals – Yes festivals? How many have you attended this winter? Exactly! That is what I thought. Now, when we think about that for a moment, we realize the fun we have missed. Actually we have lost a great deal of mental defragging by not attending the events of choice. You might say, what do you mean by “defragging”? You see those events take our minds off of the daily grind of the mundane. Often we attend these events with friends or other family members. This affords conversations and possibly empty chatter that eases the mind from the stresses of life, if ADVERTISE in the only for a little while. creative ways. That, to, is a journey with some twists and turns, but a journey none-theless. It is a way of deflecting our attention away from the frustration of isolation to excitement and enthusiasm. Who doesn’t like joy and laughter in their lives? If we engage in the positive side of the ledger by laughter and exciting entertainment outside of what we called the norm. The journey we find ourselves on at this time may be an invitation for reflection and introspection on the spiritual side of our reason for being. You see, God is still interested in our journey. In Scripture, faith and journeying are closely linked. We find God meeting people while they are on their journey. Life’s journey is not always smooth and or convenient. We have opportunity to struggle, which builds character, and all the while we try and make sense of it all. There was a fellow named Abraham who received instructions from God to go on a journey and leave country and family. But, God also informed him that He would be on that journey with him. So it is with all of us, God is with us on our journey if we invite Him to be there to encourage us in the adventure along the way. From Richer Fellowship be encouraged on your journey. We invite you to join us every Sunday at 10:30am and Wednesday at 7pm on our YouTube Channel “richer fellowship”. God bless you. Ben Funk is the Pastor of the Richer Fellowship Church.
