Local artists created the two sided piece representing the history of the region.

From The Pastor’s Desk...

Joy in Presence By Pastor Ben Funk

Summer is gone, and fall is also almost gone, and we face the dreaded cold season and less sunlight. In some of our lives we become affected by the lack of sunlight. If you are one of those persons, you may be a person who struggles with joy in your life? Many of us seem to have difficulty in understanding the difference between joy and happiness. In the absence of either one there surfaces an environment that saps those qualities from us. How can we identify either and how can we retain happiness and joy in our lives. In short happiness is based on happenings in our lives. When those happenings are not present we return to our lives of maybe mediocrity. We might ask, what is joy, and maybe even, how do we define joy? We may even ask, how do we get joy? How is joy different from happiness? Walter Wangerin writes on the issues of faith and spirituality. The difference between shallow happiness and a deep sustaining joy is sorrow. Happiness lives where sorrow is not. When sorrow arrives happiness dies. It can’t stand pain. Joy on the other hand, rises from sorrow and therefore can withstand all grief. I do not mean to become philosophical. The Greek word for joy is “chara” and the Greek word for grace is “charis”. We see the close association of these two words help us to understand that joy is the ability to take good cheer from the gospel, rejoicing in one’s eternal identity in Jesus. It is the grace of God that brings us into a right relationship with God and establishes our identity in Jesus. The dispensing of His grace in our lives is what gives us great joy. It is amazing when joy becomes resident in our hearts and lives it is amazing how we can be liberated and liberating to those around us. When difficulty wants to set in it cannot remain because joy and grace are both present. As we get closer into the season of celebration let’s remember that sorrow may be there in the evening, but joy will be there in the morning. Let’s all receive God’s grace and His joy in our heart. Grace and joy to you from Richer Fellowship Church. 50 Southeast Drive in Richer. Where seekers are welcome.
