The Indoor Growing Season: Fresh Herbs and Greens All Winter Long

As the outdoor growing season winds down and the first flakes of snow begin to fall, it may feel like the right time to hang up your gardening gloves and let your plants hibernate. But don’t let your green thumb get too cozy just yet! While your outdoor garden may be settling in for a long winter’s nap, this is the perfect time to kick off the *indoor* growing season.

Here are just a couple ways to keep that green thumb primed all winter. An indoor herb garden that every cook craves, and you can even try growing a vegetable or two indoors. It’s easy to get started by bringing a bit of your garden indoors, with herb cuttings, new potted herbs, and maybe even an experiment with some winter lettuce.

1. Many herbs can make the transition to indoor life with a little

Rather than letting your beloved basil and thyme succumb to the frost, you can take cuttings and start a whole new herb garden inside. Pick Healthy Stems, strip off the bottom leaves, and plunk your cuttings into a jar of water. Set them in a sunny spot, change the water every few days, and watch as roots start to form. Once roots sprout, transfer your new little plants into pots. This method works great with basil, mint, thyme, oregano, and rosemary.

2. Experiment with indoor vegetables like lettuce. Lettuce is fast-growing, doesn’t need a ton of space, and can be harvested multiple times. Opt for loose-leaf varieties like butterhead, oakleaf, or mesclun mix. These lettuces don’t form large heads and are perfect for harvesting leaf by leaf. Scatter the seeds over the soil and light it up.Lettuce can

plants are probably begging for attention while everyone is busy with garden clean-up, preserving your summer harvest, and figuring out how to compost that mountain of fallen leaves. We know that a little bit of green can do wonders for our mood while we wait for our first S… ( “S” word. I wont say it). Happy gardening.

The Richer Community Club has recently completed one more project under the Premier Tech Multiplex with the completion of a concrete apron from the Zamboni/Ice Maintenance Building to the rink. This was needed to ensure that the Zamboni has a clean path when building and maintaining the ice and avoids dragging gravel to the ice surface.

Two additional projects are slated to be complete before the colder weather appears. A set of players’ boxes and a penalty box will be constructed on the north side of the rink plus there are plans to patch the asphalt inside the rink.

All these projects will be completed thanks to major discounted rates from local contractors and the always dependable volunteers in the community.
