Thinking LOUD Out In Gratitude of Weeds

My husband and I aren’t lawn people — and not because we don’t appreciate a beautiful lawn. We do. We just can’t have one. With two dogs and a well, pesticides and herbicides are out, and we’ve long since given up on the theory that good grass crowds out weeds, because it doesn’t. We top seed the bare areas every year, we lime and fertilize appropriately, but by mid-July, our yard boasts exactly 36 blades of magnificent Kentucky Blue mixed with crab grass, clover, wild violets, and some kind of creeping thing that fills in where the rest leave off. The thing is, it’s green. Very green. A deep, rich green unaffected by days without rain and withering hot sun. In fact, while all the beautiful lawns are losing their battle with the elements, our field of weeds thrives, thick and lush. It’s a thing to behold, really — as long as we squint, so squint, we do, from mid-July on. And you know what else? The money we save is green, too. I think we’re onto something.
