Thinking LOUD Out Junk Drawers, Poltergeists, and Other Rationalizations Every kitchen has a junk drawer — usually that skinny one that’s not good for much else. So I was thinking, if everyone has a kitchen junk drawer, then everyone must be experiencing the same junk drawer phenomenon I am. Every few months, my junk drawer gets jammed. Some persuasion with a longhandled spoon usually does the trick, at which point I clean it out, leaving behind only the hammer and screwdriver, some glue, a roll of painter’s tape, and the scissors — but three or four months later, it jams all over again, and when I finally get it open, I find a massive tangle of junk mixed with some stray crumbs and the occasional withered baby carrot. Since I certainly don’t make that mess and no one else will own up to having made it, it’s got to be poltergeists — maybe even the same poltergeists that hide my keys and move my glasses. Now, I’m wondering about the mess in the garage…
