Thinking LOUD Out Dog Daze I have one dog who likes to sleep curled up around the toilet — especially in the summer. Perhaps his standards are a little low, but how smart is he that he elects to enjoy two dimensions of cool ceramic tile on nights when even the air conditioning just doesn’t cut it. Then there’s his sister, who burrows under the covers between my husband and I no matter what the weather. I’ve often wondered why she doesn’t suffocate, but she does not, emerging just as happy and healthy as ever, although sometimes a little cross-eyed. In fact, after shaking out the kinks, she’s apt to go right back under. I’m chalking it up to the Canine Mammalian Response, a variation of the Human Mammalian Response in which the body actually redirects oxygen to the most important organs during exposure to cold – except in this case the redirection occurs in response to high levels of carbon dioxide, wool, percale, feet, and….never mind. Certainly explains those crossed eyes.
