Technically Challenged

Welcomes

My mom works about 20 minutes from our house, meaning that she is technically in another town. Well, we just got her an HTC Evo and she likes to check the weather when she is at work and at home on her phone. Her phone, however, does not update constantly so it will still read the weather from her last location for a few moments. This has led to my mom coming to the conclusion that she “drives faster than the Internet.” Drew M

Whenever my dad walks into my room, and I say “Hey,” his only response is “Up?” He uses it as a short form for “what’s up?” Worse is that now he puts it as his FB greeting. Too short, Dad. Too short. Hanna

Calendar May 27, 6-11 p.m. All-Attorney Rock Band Headlines Tasty, Rockin’ Summer Kickoff to Benefit the Farmington Valley Arts Center. The Avon Senior Center becomes the Farmington Valley’s hottest venue for one night only, as the Street Vipers play the hot hits of the ‘60s through today in their first Farmington Valley appearance. Audiences rave about this (almost) all-attorney, nine-piece rock band, which plays just a handful of charitable engagements each year. Honored by the Hartford County Bar Association this month with a public service award for their charitable work, the Street Vipers have volunteered their talents to help sustain Avon’s Farmington Valley Arts Center (FVAC). Fire It Up!, a Tasty, Rockin’ Summer Kickoff on the Friday evening of Memorial Day weekend, is the FVAC’s largest fundraising event of the year. In addition to music and dancing, festivities include a BBQ dinner grilled on-site by The Meat House and a silent auction of unique items donated by artists and area businesses. There will be a cash bar. Reservations may be made by calling 860-678-1867 or printing and mailing the reservation form online at www.artsfvac.org. An early bird rate of $50 per person is available through May 9. Tickets reserved after May 9 are $65. Each ticket includes a $25 tax-deductible charitable donation to the FVAC, a 501(c)(3) non-profit that provides arts-related programs and opportunities for thousands in the region each year. The Avon Senior Center is located at 635 West Avon Road (Route 167) in Avon, Connecticut. For additional information, visit www. artsfvac.org or call 860-678-1867. May 28 Concert at Fiddlehead Farm! feat. Mike + Ruthy. $15 ($1/ticket goes to heifer international). 6pm doors, 6 - 7:30 dinner (byob + potluck), 7:30 music. RSVP to Louisa at: fiddlehead74@aol.com. http://www.mikeandruthy.com 6

Technically Challenged My mother’s old laptop recently died, and she got the contents of her old hard drive placed on her new computer. She then proceeded to open every single Word and Excel document from her old computer (over 150 of them) one by one, copy the info, paste it in a new document, save that document then delete the old one. When I asked her why she was doing it, she replied that she “Didn’t want the information to degrade” so she needed to “refresh” it. Talla W

It’s Official. I’m invisible.

I

started thinking I might be when I was waiting in line at the local drugstore, the cashier yelled “I’ll take the next customer,” and the guy behind me bolted for her counter. Soon after, while shopping at Marshall’s, I squeezed back into the rack behind me to let another shopper pass — only to have her park her cart right in front of me and start browsing, leaving me buried in extra large sweaters. But I really became suspicious the day I was at a stop sign, brake lights on and blinkers flashing, only to have a lady following well behind me plow full speed into my car. “I didn’t see you,” said she, her hands on hips in obvious distress that I’d had the nerve to materialize just in time to total her car. “Listen,” said my husband, “people can be rude and people can get distracted. It happens.” But that’s not it. I really think I’ve become invisible — and actually, I’m kind of relieved. Now I can give up dieting.

Funnifieds Q: What’s the definition of a bachelor pad? A: All the house plants are dead, but there’s something growing in the refrigerator. To gain self-confidence, you must avoid using negative words such as can’t and not,” the counselor advised the young woman. “Do you think you could do that?” “Well, I can’t see why not.” “My parents are the epitome of abstinence,” the boy explains to his schoolmates. “They don’t smoke, they don’t drink, and my sister and I are adopted children.”

Technically Challenged I used to write for a newspaper website – stories about films, food, opinion pieces, all sorts of things. This perplexed my dad. “But why are they putting that on the website?” he’d ask. “Isn’t that all about websites?” Right dad, because websites only contain content about websites. Anne W My dad asked me to make sure I send my mother’s day e-card to my mom’s iPad, not her email address, because he said she hadn’t set up her email on her iPad yet. Carlie R

Technically Challenged This past week, I got the brand new iPad 2. I took it home with me today to show parents since they had never seen one before. After showing both of my parents some apps and other cool things the iPad can do, I opened up the Chase Bank app. I showed them what a useful online banking app it is, and showed them that I can even use the iPad’s camera to scan and deposit a check. I demonstrated this with a check my dad had given me earlier in the day. After the check was successfully deposited my mother exclaimed, “Wow! Technology is amazing nowadays, can it do cash deposits too?” Ryan B

Technically Challenged My mom recently got Facebook and when it came time to pick a profile picture she took a picture of one of her and my dad’s wedding pictures hanging on the wall and centered the camera so that my dad was cropped out of it—You can see the corner of the picture where the wall begins. Michaela T My boss asked me if I knew how to print out text messages from her iPhone. I told her that I did not. About an hour later, while making some copies, I found a piece of paper, with the black and white scanned image of her phone, in the trash can. A for effort, I guess. Matt B Without fail, every time he sees that I’m on my laptop, my dad will ask me if I’m studying or just “doing the Google.” Robyn K

My boss prints each of her business and personal emails (usually from insurance reps, underwriters for companies, and, occasionally, her son). She then writes out her responses, staples any information that needs to go with it, and hands it to me to scan and email back. In the subject, she makes me put “SEE THE ATTACHMENT PLEASE” then makes me type her name at the bottom in a font that looks like cursive. I once tried throwing away the original email and just typing her response but she almost fired me because she thought that it was unprofessional to simply type an email. She also makes me print a “confirmation”, meaning I have to go into sent emails and print it out. Best Part? She tells everyone that we’re a paperless office, and that I’m teaching her how to work with electric devices. Gloria R MA y 2 4 , 2 0 1 1

June 11 Playhouse on Park presents a night of comedy! Connecticut Comics: Uncut. Playhouse on Park presents a one night only night of side-splitting comedy, featuring ten Connecticut comedians and hosted by West Hartford’s own Linda Belt! Linda Belt holds her own as a professional stand up comic. Her humor touches on the absurdities of modern life and explores marriage, sex, parenting and social mores, in other words: any subject she feels like discussing!

Linda has performed throughout the US and Canada and has been featured in a numerous comedy festivals. “Connecticut Comics: Uncut” is one night only and sure to sell out quickly! This special fundraiser to benefit Playhouse on Park will be held on June 11th at 8:00pm at Playhouse on Park. All tickets are $25, reserved seating, and include complimentary beer, wine and munchies! Playhouse on Park is located at 244 Park Road, West Hartford, CT. For more information or to purchase tickets, please visit our website at www.playhouseonpark.org or call us at (860) 523-5900 x10. June 11, 3 p.m. Through storybooks, children can live out their fantasies and allow their imaginations to come to life. Connecticut native Ron Roy serves as a guide on such journeys with his three series of children’s mystery books. He spent nearly a decade writing the books in his “A to Z Mysteries” series, then the “Capital Mysteries” and most recently, the “Calendar Mysteries”. Fans of all his popular book collections will have a rare opportunity to meet the author in person at a special ice cream social fundraiser to benefit the Playhouse on Park theatre in West Hartford. The event will be held at the Playhouse on Park theatre, located at 244 Park Road in West Hartford. It will feature a question and answer session with Ron Roy, as well as an ice cream social sponsored by AC Petersen Farms. Those in attendance will receive one free ticket to Playhouse on Park’s production of “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown”, which opens the weekend of June 18th. Parents will also receive a voucher for a buy 1 get 1 free ticket to any upcoming Playhouse on Park performance. Tickets to the event are $10 each. Visit www.playhouseonpark.org to purchase tickets to the Ron Roy event or for more information. 30

Technically Challenged I linked my dad’s email to his BlackBerry so that he doesn’t have to go on the computer to check his email, but every time his friends tell him that they sent him a message, he needs me to sign on to his email on the computer. He doesn’t believe me when I say that his mailbox on his BlackBerry is the same mailbox I’m checking on his Gmail account. N S.

Calendar June 29 Pennies for the Playhouse – Raises Money for Playhouse on Park. Community & Business Involvement Encouraged. Wondering what to do with all that spare change you find in the couch cushions, under the car seat, in your laundry? We have the answer to your question; donate it to Playhouse on Park! Playhouse on Park is once again teaming up with TD Bank for the annual “Pennies for the Playhouse” fundraiser. All you have to do is start saving all that change from now until June 29th. Then on June 29th bring it to TD Bank at 29 South Main Street, between the hours of 8am and 6pm and we’ll count it for free and deposit into the Pennies for the Playhouse account. While you’re there enjoy free entertainment and treats and know that you are helping to support Playhouse on Park, a great non-profit organization to provide quality theatre. Businesses may get involved by keeping a TD Bank Pennies for the Playhouse collection container on their counter and encouraging their customers and employees to contribute to Pennies for the Playhouse. The Pennies for the Playhouse fundraising campaign will conclude with a community celebration in Blue Back Square which includes a full concert by the Martha’s Vineyard band “ENTRAIN” On June 29th at 7:00pm. This event is free and open to the public, although optional donations to the Pennies for the Playhouse campaign are encouraged. This celebration is sponsored by Per Se Aveda – Lifestyle Salon. For more information, and a complete schedule of events, please call 860-523-5900 x10 or visit www. PlayhouseOnPark.org If you are a business who would like to display a TD Bank collection container, contact James Denton at jdenton@PlayhouseTheatreGroup.org.
