My grandpa decided that he wanted a new flat screen TV to replace his old 32”. He wanted a really good TV; so he ended up buying a 42” 1080p 120hz LED-HDTV. I had to wrestle the old really heavy TV from his basement to the second floor, and then put his new TV where the old one was. After hooking everything up and teaching him to use the HD channels and explaining everything about the TV and the great technology...he turns on TCM and we watched a black and white show from 1935 for two hours. Not only did we watch black and white on his high tech TV but when it was in color there was “too much color” and how the picture looked better on his old TV. Nick P

Week’s BEST Technically Challenged Yesterday I went out with my parents who had just gotten back from vacation. While at dinner, my dad handed me a brand new USB still in the wrapper, and asked me if I could get his vacation pictures off it and photoshop them to make them look better. I looked at it unconvinced and asked him, “You have files on a USB that’s still in its sealed clamshell packaging?” He replied, “Yep!”, tried to open it with his hands, and, failing, looked and me and said, “Oh, hm. Maybe not.” Kristin F

Week’s BEST Technically Challenged • Over the summer, my Mom and I were hanging out by the pool, and I had my phone connected to a set of speakers so we could listen to music. My phone chirped to let me know it had a low battery and my Mom asked what that noise was. I explained the battery in my phone was getting low and she replied “Oh yeah. It sounded like the music was slowing down.” Jodie S • I asked my mom to pick me up a new memory card since she was going to the mall and there are 2 games stores in it. She’s seen the memory cards before but assumed she would just ask for help from one of the clerks. When she came back she told me she found a great deal on a bunch of them and didn’t have to go to the game store. I opened the bag to find a pack of 100 Memorex brand floppy disks. Katie P

Week’s BEST Bumper Stickers • How Can I Miss You if You Won’t Go Away?

Spring Songs and Blue Toes One of my favorite parts of Spring is that first mild night when the peepers start peeping — and since we have some boggy fields nearby that are home to these tiny creatures, the minute they start singing, I can hear them. It stirs some part of my soul that just can’t seem to reawaken without their little chorus. It also makes me want to open all the windows, clean house, plant something, and put on my flip flops. The trouble is, Mother Nature is never in nearly as much of a hurry as I am, so I have to pace myself, cracking windows only slightly, cleaning only a bit more zealously, and letting tulips and daffodils planted long, long ago sustain me for a few more weeks. But the flip flops can’t wait. I don them at the first possible chance and keep them on regardless of the weather. I simply wear the blue plaid pair so they match my toes.

• I like you, but I wouldn’t want to see you working with sub-atomic particles. • I Brake For No Apparent Reason.

Join us for a

Summer of Fun

at the

4-h education center at auer Farm! June 20 –August 19

Our Summer Farm Academy welcomes children from pre-Kindergarten through 6th grade.

What happens at the Farm?

This summer, we’ll explore the natural world, in the barn, in the gardens, and on the farm’s rolling hills and meadows. We’ll take a hayride, create original craft projects, learn about plants and insects, visit the new chickens, goats and calves, and harvest blueberries to make a pie! Older children will learn about the food system, pick basil to make a pizza, and use sheep wool to create a unique piece of art. When is it happening? Children come for one week or more. (Each week is unique.) It’s a perfect mix of learning and fun, from June 20th through August 19th. Two groups are now forming: Farm Explorers (pre-K through entering 2nd grade) 9 am – 12 Noon $150/week Junior Farmers (Entering 3rd through entering 6th grade) 9 am – 3 pm $250/week Reduced rates for siblings are available, and ask about our scholarships. For more information, or to register: • by phone: 860 242-7144, Ext. 10 • by email: 4HCenter@comcast.net Bloomfield, ConneCtiCut

Space is limited, so please register early! www.auerfarm.org 26

Weekly Overview (Week starting on March 21) Monday and Tuesday are ‘watching the paint dry’ days: slow, meditative, odd. Lift your gaze from your navel as necessary, but don’t expect to be shaken out of this state until Wednesday. The start of the week, in a way, is like the slowly ticking buildup to a roller coaster’s highest drop, and Wednesday is the exhilarating beginning of a three-day-long rush. You’re in the front car of the coaster, but each turn still surprises you. This weekend, the ride might change, but you never actually slow down. Your friends and your career figure strongly.
