Thinking Out LOUD After Words Imagine reaching the age of 99 with few physical ailments and all your wits about you. Well, someone I know did. First, she was my friend’s mother and my mother’s friend — and then, as we both got older and age was more relative, we became friends, too. She found me amusing, I found her wise, and when she was widowed, we talked a lot about what happens when we die. “You’ll be surprised,” I’d tell her, smiling. “I hope so,” she’d say, smiling back — but I never won her over. She believed in the here and now far more than the hereafter, which is probably why she invested so richly in each day’s simple blessings. Recently, my 99-year-old friend died, but it seems that just before she left, she asked that her hair be combed and her bedclothes straightened. Then she asked for a hanky to tuck in the sleeve of her nightgown. “It’s as if she were getting ready to go somewhere,” someone said. “She was,” I thought, smiling.” Safe journey, my friend.
