Calendar Summer 2011 Playhouse on Park theatre will be offering summer classes and workshops for students, ages 5 through adult; SUMMER THEATRE PROGRAMS. Children entering kindergarten through grade 2 will be introduced to theatre through creative play. Exercises and games will focus on acting, story telling, puppetry, music, and basic movement / dance. Students entering grades 3-5 will participate in games, exercises, and scenes to allow them to gain comfort and technique in portraying a character onstage. Students entering grades 6-8 will focus on developing their acting technique through using their voices and bodies to portray characters onstage. This class will include acting and storytelling games, improvisation exercises, monologue and scene work, movement / dance for actors, and voice for actors. HIGH SCHOOL COLLEGE PREPARATORY ACTING PROGRAM. Open to students entering grades 9-12. Students will participate in an intensive training program for high school actors. Who gets to be first?

always wonder about that whenever I have a repairman coming, since I’ve never had a repairman show up until one minute before my 8-tonoon or 1-to-5 window officially closes. Of course, there are worse things than being held captive in one’s own home, where having the time to catch up on a few chores or listen to the quiet can be wonderful! But I’m still curious. Who gets to be first? Someone must. And if someone does, then I want to know how he or she got to be first, as well as what someone who gets to be first does after being first. Does he or she go actually go back to work or just hang around awhile enjoying things, then lie to the boss about the repairman not showing up until 11:59 or 4:59? After all, who would know? I mean, no one I know has ever gotten to be first. And no one I know knows anyone who has ever gotten to be first, so who would know? If I ever get to be first, I’ll let you know.

In 2002, author Ann Hood’s five year old daughter Grace died suddenly from strep. Three years later, Ann traveled with her husband and son to China to adopt a baby girl. As a writer and a “new” mom, Ann used her experiences to create her latest novel, The Red Thread. It is an insightful look into the adoption process, and the lives of the brave women who are forced to abandon their children in the hope of giving them a better life. Technically Challenged One day my grandparents got a call from their cable company, offering them one month of internet for free, and a free Wi-Fi router when they extend their contract. Not knowing much about technology, (and never using internet before) they called me up and asked me what Wi-Fi was. I explained how it’s the internet, but without wires. So I got them a laptop so they could use their new internet. When they took it out of the box, they walked over to the router (which was on the kitchen counter for some reason) and placed the laptop ON TOP of the router, and turned it on. Technically Challenged A few weeks ago I received a Facebook message from an older gentleman with the same name as me. He asked me why I stole his name on Facebook. J W Last fall, my mother went to Italy with her mother and sister. She took her digital camera in to Wal-Mart and got a CD made with all the pictures. A few days ago, she decided she wanted to mail the CD to her mother, but discovered the CD was in her computer and the tray was jammed. When she called me, I told her she should either email the pictures or make an online album and send the link. She eventually decided that it would be easier for her to pry the tray open with a butter knife and mail the CD to my grandmother than to send the photos electronically. Heather F

May 14 Our tour of Net Zero Energy House in Killingworth. A tour for participants with a deep interest in energy will be held Saturday, May 14, at a house in Killingworth, CT, the 2010 winner of the Net Zero Energy Challenge. This beautiful, classic New England home achieved the highest level of energy efficiency (LEED Platinum) using geothermal heating and cooling; unique passive solar systems; active solar systems for hot water, heating and pool heat; and a highly energy-efficient building envelope. Sponsored by People’s Action for Clean Energy (PACE) in conjunction with the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund (CCEF), the tour will show visitors the use of salvaged and local materials; unique lightenhancing window openings; extremely energy efficient appliances and many other green features. Questions will be answered by the owners and representative companies.Two-hour tours of the Killingworth house will be held at 11:00 am, 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm and will be guided by the owners, who deserve special commendation for setting a historical precedent for Connecticut environmental energy. Reservations, indicating first, second and third choices of time, will be accepted in order of receipt for the May 14 tour, which will be held rain or shine.
