Hats Off to the Ladies of Great Britain
o, really. I’m serious. Please take off those hats! British fashion experts may call them “fascinators,” but my trusty online Urban Dictionary defines these “fascinators” as “a concoction of feathers, lace, and random dead birds,” and frankly, I have to agree. I mean, there I was, up at dawn and ready to savor all the pomp and circumstance of Will and Kate’s royal wedding, when the parade of hazardous hats began. In no time at all, my joyful anticipation turned to fear that the Duchess of Whatever might turn suddenly, skewering the eye of the poor soul seated beside her and causing others sporting equally menacing hats to turn suddenly, too, with similar results, thus ruining an otherwise glorious spectacle in…well…the blink of an eye. Thankfully, that did not happen — but there’s always a next time. And so, to England’s noble ladies, I say hats off! And do be careful where you put them.

So he actually called one of the IT technicians from the school that he used to work at to come over and help him change it because he wanted to make sure it was “done properly” in case it somehow managed to alter any of the other passwords he uses. Sarah, a 7 year old Avon resident and daughter of Oscar and April Esquivel, was diagnosed last year with nephrogenic adenoma lesions in her bladder. According to her doctor, there are only a few known cases worldwide of children being diagnosed since 1950. Over the past year, Sarah has had to undergo multiple hospital visits, medical tests, and surgeries at great medical expense to her family. Sarah’s situation is more complex than most as the lesions are diffused throughout her bladder which will likely result in the removal of her bladder. Fortunately for Sarah the lesions are benign. Oscar and April have been the Coach and Manager of the Girls Avon Pegasus Travel Soccer Team over the past three years. They have given so much of their time to the development of the girls’ soccer skills while also providing them guidance on life long lessons regarding hard work, responsibility, respect, sportsmanship, and community. Anyone with an adult or child’s bicycle in working or repairable condition is encouraged to donate it to this great cause. We are also collecting working sewing machines. Over the last 20 years, Pedals for Progress has prevented over 130,000 bikes from entering our waste stream. Instead, families are living better lives because they have the simple mobility of a bicycle. The cost to collect, process, ship, rebuild, and distribute each bicycle is $40. A $10 minimum donation toward shipping costs is requested with each bike or sewing machine. The Avon Senior Center becomes the Farmington Valley’s hottest venue for one night only, as the Street Vipers play the hot hits of the ‘60s through today in their first Farmington Valley appearance. Audiences rave about this (almost) all-attorney, nine-piece rock band, which plays just a handful of charitable engagements each year. Honored by the Hartford County Bar Association this month with a public service award for their charitable work, the Street Vipers have volunteered their talents to help sustain Avon’s Farmington Valley Arts Center (FVAC). Fire It Up!, a Tasty, Rockin’ Summer Kickoff on the Friday evening of Memorial Day weekend, is the FVAC’s largest fundraising event of the year. In addition to music and dancing, festivities include a BBQ dinner grilled on-site by The Meat House and a silent auction of unique items donated by artists and area businesses.
