From the President... Congratulations to all of our Speechcraft graduates! We had a fantastic last night on October 26 with Jacqui Hogan, our Division Governor, in attendance. She spoke about possibilities and opportunities and I believe we are well aware of what possibilities and opportunities lie in front of us as we work toward becoming a chartered club. We have a busy rest of the year ahead of us as we move forward into normal meetings. The Mayor of Camberley, Keith Bush, will be in attendance on November 2 to help us get our normal meetings underway. Don’t miss the evening as it promises to be a fascinating night! We’re M-A-D at CCL! Ask us WHY!!! We believe in applying the OoOh Factor to our proceedings to help our members get the most out of their membership and to help our guests realise there is something different about our club. Why are we M-A-D??? Because we seek to actively Make a Difference to ourselves and each other, the club and the communities in which we live. What is the OoOh Factor??? It is the proactive way we Optimise our Opportunities. We share information about upcoming events where and when we can to give our members outside opportunities to stretch their skills and their confidence. We volunteer for roles and seek to participate in club activities. We enjoy Table Topics (impromptu speaking) and find them immensely challenging and exciting! We always welcome guests and visitors to our club. You may come along to any meeting and there will be someone on hand to answer questions and help you find your way through the agenda. If you’re a Toastmaster from another club, please contact me, Jean, or our Vice President of Education, Carol, before you come. We’d be delighted to offer you a role on the agenda if you’d like and would welcome your input and feedback on the evening. Warmest regards Jean Hamilton-Fford, CC

The Most Important Role of all...
Club Member Ambassador

We, the members of Camberley Communicators & Leaders, Pledge to support you in your quest for self-development, To provide you with positive, helpful evaluations, To maintain a friendly, supportive atmosphere, To give you opportunities to help others, And to make sure your membership Is a rewarding and fulfilling experience. A BIG ‘THANK YOU’ THANKS!
Making Meetings Work by John A Cagle Over the next few months, I’ll be bringing information from John Cagle about Parliamentary Procedure. This is the first installment. lEffective meetings require
planning in advance, both on the part of the person who chairs them and of the people who participate. lDo not have a meeting unless it is necessary. lDon’t engage in political game playing or parliamentary maneuvering. Members must commit themselves to the group purpose. lListen to what others at the meeting have to say. lMake sure you understand the reason for a meeting and do your homework in accordance with this understanding. lActively engage in the discussion. (Next page)
How do we say ‘Thank You’ to Maidenhead Speakers Club for supporting our efforts to start CCL? Simply by saying just that... THANK YOU or Muchas Gracias (for Mireia)! Mireia Fontbernat Moline, Steve Catchick and Pravin Shingadia have all been so willing to take the time and make the effort to come along to as many meetings as possible... We really do appreciate all that you’ve done for us! Janet Rose and Ian Rees have come along as well. To all of Maidenhead Speakers Club members: We still need your support and your willingness to come along and participate so don’t be strangers! We are happy to allow you opportunities to speak, to evaluate, to participate in most of the roles on the agenda. Just let us know when you’re available and what you’d like to do. Many thanks, once again for all your assistance!

Communicator & Leader (contd) On the Road to Chartering... What does it take for a club to charter? We need YOU! To build to charter strength, we must have 20 members, 3 of which can be dual members from other clubs.
Making Meetings Work contd. lRecognize that five kinds of
knowledge are all needed for a successful meeting participant: F Knowledge of the subject matter at hand F Knowledge of parliamentary rules of order F Knowledge of rhetoric-the power to persuade F Knowledge of problem solving and decision making F Knowledge of human socialemotional dynamics lBe sure the purpose of each
meeting and each item on the agenda, is clear to the members: F To share ideas and information only F To brief members before action F To generate new ideas F To make a decision F To make a recommendation
We have all the other basic things already in place. We have a President, a Treasurer and a Secretary. We have two/three club sponsors: Reading Speakers Club and Mark Bell as well as Sue Clejan-Laney from California. We have a meeting location and we have developed a structured agenda for the meetings. We are meeting weekly and we satisfy the criteria for holding speeches, evaluations and table topics once a month. We are only missing members. What can you do to help build membership? You can talk about CCL every time you get the opportunity. Tell people how it is M-A-D to you as an individual and how you are M-A-D to your personal, professional and community life using the skills and the program CCL offers. Invite them to come along. Tell them about the OoOh Factor and how we Optimise our Opportunities in as many ways as possible. Talk about how speaking outside of the club has benefitted you and how opportunities seem to appear for you to use the newfound skills and abilities you now possess. Tell them about the rest of the members. We are a diverse group of people who support and encourage each other to grow. Be an ambassador by sharing your story, by inviting others to come along and experience CCL for themselves. You’ll be glad you did and so will they!

Communicator & Leader (contd) How to give effective evaluations At every Toastmasters meeting, a significant part of the meeting time is allocated to the evaluation team. The evaluation team consists of a General Evaluator, one or more Speech Evaluators, a Table Topics Evaluator, and sometimes a Grammarian, Umm Counter, and Timer. Evaluation has several objectives, including: w To give the speaker your honest reaction in a constructive manner.
Stretch Your Evaluation Vocabulary From D72 Website http://www.toastmasters.org.nz

w To teach the evaluator to listen, clearly, precisely and attentively. w To give the evaluator an opportunity to practice delivering an oral evaluation. When you are the evaluator Before the meeting: w Read the speech project in the manual. Become familiar with the objectives and goals. w Read the evaluation guide for the project. This helps you listen and watch for specific areas of emphasis. w Talk to the speaker before the meeting to get an understanding of the speaker's goals and any specific areas for which the speaker wants feedback. Before and During the speech In your introduction of the speaker, give the project title (e.g., Speech 2: "Organise Your Speech" from the Communication and Leadership Manual) and read the project's objectives [unless the objectives are printed on the agenda]. Listen to the speech. What strikes you? These can be either great things or not so great things. Look for things that are missing. Especially consider the project's goals. Write useful comments in the speaker's manual for future reference. Use your notes when you give your oral evaluation. Your evaluation Be positive. Tell the speaker what you thought went well, what you enjoyed. Say "I liked the example used to support the first point. I identify with the cat in that story." or "The speaker really nailed the closing. I was motivated to act immediately on the suggestion to write to my councillor." Always conclude on a positive comment. Be specific. Rather than saying "The speaker had distracting hand gestures" say "When the speaker pounded on the lectern, it distracted me from the point he was trying to make because it was too loud." Be constructive. Rather than saying "The speaker's voice is monotone" say "The speaker's voice has good volume. I would like to see more variety in pacing and pitch to emphasize the different points of view presented." Effective evaluations are an irreplaceable part of the Toastmasters educational mission. The speaker, the evaluator, and your fellow Toastmasters all benefit from effective evaluations. From D72 Website http://www.toastmasters.org.nz
MOM, FROM NOW ON, I DON’T WANT TO BE INTRODUCED TO PEOPLE AS PLAIN “CALVIN.”
I WANT TO BE INTRODUCED AS “CALVIN, BOY OF DESTINY.”
BOY OF DESTINY??
BUT YOU HAVE TO SAY IT RIGHT. PAUSE A LITTLE AFTER “BOY,” AND SAY “DESTINY” A BIT SLOWER AND DEEPER FOR EMPHASIS. SAY IT, “BOY... OF DESSSTINY,” LIKE THAT!
I THINK I’M GOING TO STOP INTRODUCING YOU ALTOGETHER.
I WISH YOU HAD SOME CYMBALS TO CRASH AFTER YOU SAID IT.
