MENTORI NG What is it? In Greek Mythology, Mentor was the trusted companion of Odysseus,King of Ithaca (Homer’s Odyssey, 800BC). When Odysseusset off for the Trojan wars he left Mentor in charge of the royal household. One of his tasks was to raise the king’s son, Telemachus, and make him a wise and good ruler.

Mentoring is an ongoing process whereby mentor/mentee agree goals and plan small steps to achieve them (SMART targets).

Mentors provide: • Time • Knowledge and insight • Encouragement & support • Guidance on improvement • •

Role model Confidential support

Good mentors may use Mentoring/Counselling/Coaching techniques

Who can do it? Anyone can be a mentor as long as he/she is committed to helping others to achieve their potential.

What qualities/skills do we need to be a mentor? • • • •

Who needs to be mentored? I think we all do!
