WHAT YOU CAN GET OUT OF JOINING Whatever your starting point, from terrified to eloquent, if you want to improve you will do so. Within 6 – 12 months of regular attendance in our supportive environment, you will make giant leaps in your ability to talk to groups of people, Typical reasons for joining: I would rather die than speak in public I adore speaking in public I want to get better at speaking and stop being so nervous • I like live entertainment I need to give presentations I would like to participate more effectively in meetings It sounds like fun! I want to meet people from a variety of backgrounds who are interested in learning and improving themselves • I would like to be a better listener I would like to be part of helping others to improve I would like to communicate more persuasively I would like to be able to develop my leadership qualities • I would like to have fun on Tuesday evenings
Please come along to our very informal (but structured) meetings and learn as much and as quickly as you feel able. The most you will be asked to do as a guest is to join in a couple of gentle speaking exercises and to stand up briefly and introduce yourself. As a member, you will be progressing towards the Competent Toastmaster (CTM) award, by completing a series of 10 short speeches (typically 5 – 7 minutes) in front of an encouraging and helpful audience. Each speech will be on a subject of your choice and with objectives to highlight a particular aspect of speaking. You will be able to choose a mentor who will guide you through the process. There will be opportunities for you to broaden your communication skills by taking on leadership and support roles in the meetings and the running of the club. The CTM award is recognised worldwide as proof of a useful level of skill in public speaking. You can go much further once you achieve this initial goal, with advanced courses in particular types of speaking, leading and presenting.
WHAT YOU GET WHEN YOU JOIN A manual to guide you step by step through what you need to do to achieve the objectives for each speech assignment and speaking activity Fun evenings and feedback from a supportive evaluator each time you give a speech or take a speaking role Individual, written feedback from each member of the audience The opportunity to develop “off-thecuff” impromptu speaking skills Training in the skills required for giving constructive feedback and supportive evaluations to other speakers Encouragement and support to learn more by taking on various leadership and support roles in the meetings Educational materials and a monthly magazine from our international organisation that provides advice and recommendations on effective communication and leadership Support and training through the members of our local network of clubs
in the South East of England and indeed across the UK and Ireland
