It seems only fitting that we send this issue to press as the lighting of the National Christmas tree gets underway. Growing up in DC, the lighting always symbolized the sense that now really is the holiday season. In this issue we offer up suggestions for gifting locally, including a selection of winter brews our writer suggests make excellent stocking stuffers, and shine a light on the good work Caps hockey players do off the ice - by giving their time and resources to those less fortunate. And of course, our annual guide to New Year’s Eve events, a full slate of parties to help you celebrate no matter your budget or taste. As we wrap up 2016, we wish you all the best for a holiday season full of cheer and look forward to seeing you in the New Year.

nown for taking grandiose musicals and reinventing them to fit within the walls of a black box theater, Signature Theatre Artistic Director Eric Schaeffer climbs aboard the unsinkable ship and steers it straight for Arlington. As the captain of the S.S. Signature Theatre, Schaeffer has quite a production to create, not only because of its familiarity, but because of the expectations that accompany a musical of such grandeur. As a matter of fact, Schaeffer and Signature’s production team designed the set to ensure it would fit their space and vision before deciding to produce the musical. Despite popular belief, Titanic: The Musical is not based off of the film starring heartthrob Leo DiCaprio and should-be wife Kate Winslet

(I’m obviously still bitter about this), despite both premiering in 1997. But that doesn’t make Titanic: The Musical any less daunting to produce. When asked why Signature Theatre chose to tackle Titanic, Schaeffer replied, “It’s a show I’ve always loved. It’s underproduced. Titanic has the best opening number in the history of musical theatre.” With a cast and crew comprised of over 50 members, it’s easy for one to feel overwhelmed. “Sometimes I ask myself how I’m going to do this,” Schaeffer added. “But theatre is about collaboration, and everyone here is ready to make this show happen.” When people think of big musicals, most imagine them taking place on a proscenium stage in a theater that seats thousands. As if Signature Theatre wasn’t making a big enough statement by producing this musical to begin with, the way they’re staging it

makes an entirely new statement in and of itself. Upon walking into the theater, which is a traditional black box but will be set as a theater in the round (meaning audience members will be sitting on all sides of the stage while the action takes place in the center), you can expect to see a set that’s built vertically instead of horizontally. There will not be a ship onstage, and said ship will not sink, but instead you will feel as if you’re inside of the ship itself. Actors will be exhibiting multistory blocking, including utilizing the catwalk as part of the stage, which is typically reserved for crew members to work and not be seen. “Audiences will have an experience hopefully like none other,” Schaeffer said. “It’s not all bells and whistles. It’s an unexpected emotional connection to the show. What you’ll have as an audience member is a night of intimate theatre. You’ll be, at most, seven

rows back from the stage, so you’re in the world of it. Who else in their right mind is doing Titanic in a small black box, not to mention in the round?” Though Schaeffer never claimed to be in his right mind (what creative is?), he did claim to be ambitious, and this show is just that. Apart from the spectacle of it all, Titanic: The Musical is also comprised of a wonderful cast of actors portraying both fictional and historical characters alike. Captain Edward John Smith, played by Christopher Bloch, and Frederick Barrett, played by Sam Ludwig, are just two of many historical figures associated with the infamous 1912 sinking of the unsinkable ship.

Bloch, who has been an important figure in DC theatre for the past 15 years, said he associates himself with Captain Smith because of their similarity in age (early 60s) and their mutual affinity for sailing and operating big ships. His initial connection with the captain lead him to purchase Smith’s biography in an effort to learn to play the role more authentically, noting that he’s even dabbling with various dialects to accompany his portrayal. “When creating a character, you have to find something that makes sense within the context of the story, even if they don’t seem to make sense,” Bloch said. “Are they illogical? A villain? Why do they do what they do? Find the truth for your character. The words give you that information.” Ludwig, who plays the lead stoker in the boiling room (Barrett is the first to notice the iceberg’s impact on the ship), is reprising his role after playing the character at 19. “I love playing roles I’ve done before, because you have a baseline understanding of your character,” he said. “I can think more holistically and be as natural as possible.” If you’re a fan of engaging, ambitious theatre, Titanic: The Musical is not to be missed. With a lush score and a thrilling set, you’re sure to be transported back in time. Titanic opens December 13 and runs through January 29. Tickets are $40-$79. Check Signature Theatre’s website for details about specialty nights and discounts.

Broadway Bound Broadway Bound is the third part of Neil Simon’s autobiographical trilogy, and it’s hilarious. Two brothers, Eugene and Stanley, want desperately to break into show business as comedic writers. To make matters even harder, their parents are getting a divorce. Sometimes the more depressing the subject, the funnier the material (Donald Trump, anyone?), and that’s exactly what propels Eugene and Stanley to turn their family drama into hilarious radio material. But what happens when their family hears? Thursdays at 7:30 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15-$30. 1st Stage: 1524 Spring Hill Rd. From one of America’s most daring playwrights, Young Jean Lee dives deep into the intricacies of identity and the hypocrisies of privilege all while highlighting the natural humor found in such scenarios. s hockey season nears the midseason mark and the holidays approach, it’s a great time for the NHL and Washingtonians alike to focus not only on points and team standings, but also on the charitable endeavors undertaken by its players. Year-round, the Washington Capitals are involved in foundations and youth-based programs structured to benefit those who may be less fortunate. “As Minnesota residents and an active duty family in the Army for the last 10-plus years, we are so thankful to be supported by such an organization! Kindergarten-aged Connor is discovering his love and devotion to hockey and we cannot get him off the ice.” This testimonial was posted on the Facebook page of the organization formerly known as Defending the Blue Line, a nonprofit started in 2008 by professional hockey player Brent Burns and Shane Hudella, a former full-time member of the military. The Caps are very involved in the foundation, particularly defensemen Karl Alzner, Brooks Orpik and Nate Schmidt. The mission of the United Heroes League, which Defending the Blue Line is now called, is to ensure that children of members of the military are afforded every opportunity possible to participate in the sport of his or her dreams. This is accomplished by providing free equipment, instructional camps and financial assistance for hockey and other sports. The Caps have provided families with tickets to 20 home games a season, and take time afterward to meet and greet with them. In addition, Alzner, Nicklas Backstrom and Braden Holtby have their own player program, So Kids Can, in tandem with Elliot Segal of the Elliot in the Morning show, which is broadcast on DC101. The players donate $50 per win during the regular season and $100 during the playoffs to a local youth-focused nonprofit. Together, they select the nonprofit at the beginning of the season and pay a visit with the monetary donation at the end, where they also spend time with the children.

Coach Barry Trotz was very involved in the Nashville community when he coached the Predators, and he’s brought that philanthropic attitude to DC as well. The coach is a huge supporter of the Best Buddies Capital Region chapter, which offers one-to-one friendship, integrated employment and leadership development programs. Nearly 29,000 youths with disabilities are assisted by the programs through organized events like walks, dances and golf tournaments. Team captain Alex Ovechkin is also very active in the community through his Ovi’s Crazy 8s program, which he founded in 2006 to give underserved children, recuperating injured soldiers, and active military and their families the chance to attend a Caps home game at the Verizon Center. With the Caps again looking like one of the best teams in hockey, the families that get to see the games are bound to have an enjoyable evening. And the players’ charitable involvements away from the rink only magnify this team’s likability.

ince new head coach Scott Brooks arrived in DC in the off-season, the Washington Wizards have rediscovered a word that went missing from their vocabulary last season: fun. The team’s practices – while hard-charging and intense – are often punctuated by laughter and playful jibes between players and coaches. The scowls and groans of frustration often evident last season, when the team amassed a middling 41-41 record and missed the playoffs, are out. Chest bumps and big grins are in. Most players credit the change in atmosphere at the Verizon Center to the team’s new head coach. Brooks, a former NBA point guard who coached the Oklahoma City Thunder from 2008 to 2015 and won NBA Coach of the Year honors in 2010, replaced Randy Wittman in May. “Coach Brooks makes the game of basketball fun again,” said Kelly Oubre Jr., one of the Wizards’ most charismatic youngsters and a player expected to make a big contribution as small forward this season. Fifth-year shooting guard Bradley Beal, who inked a five-year, $127 million contract in the off-season and is gunning for his first NBA AllStar berth, also notices a marked improvement in the team’s mood. “It’s definitely a different vibe,” Beal told On Tap, while offering assurances that the team will reach the playoffs. “It’s more upbeat and I’m happy about that. Guys are actually going harder and they’re more focused. It’s exciting. It’s a new year with new faces. We feel like we have a great opportunity.” Coach Brooks is also optimistic and upbeat – to a point. The team’s slow start in November didn’t give the Wizards’ new coach much to celebrate, but the team picked up the pace and started winning more games in the latter half of the month. “They should be having fun,” Brooks told On Tap in an interview after a practice session that saw a loose and happy John Wall, the Wizards’ typically serious all-star point guard, clowning with forward Otto Porter during free throw drills. “This is a fun game that we all love. But there’s a balance between having fun and being too happy. We’re having fun, but we’re also serious about our jobs.” The Wizards’ General Manager Ernie Grunfeld was dead serious about improving the squad’s anemic defense when he lured an in-demand Brooks to the nation’s capital with a five-year, $35 million contract in the off-season. The fact that the Wizards missed the playoffs in the 2015-2016 season after nearly making it to the Eastern Conference finals in 2015 was due at least in part to the fact that the team couldn’t stop opponents. A retooled lineup that has versatile power forward Markieff Morris – acquired at the end of last season – in a starting role should give the team some much-needed muscle

down low, while the signing of talented, veteran center Ian Mahinmi as a backup to starting center Marcin Gortat provides another good defender in the paint. Brooks doesn’t shy away from his reputation as a defensive-minded coach, but he stressed that he has the Wizards working hard on their offensive schemes, too. “We want to have a consistent approach on how we play,” Brooks explained. “We don’t want to be just a defensive team or an offensive team. We want to be a two-way basketball team, and I think we can be a very good two-way basketball team.” While off-season additions and roster changes give Washington a somewhat different look, Wall remains the heart and soul of the franchise. Brooks told On Tap he likes what he’s seen from Wall, who underwent surgeries on both knees in May. The Wizards will go as far as the explosive ball handler and his rehabbed knees can take them this season. Brooks said he expects Wall to regularly log 30-35 minutes per game – a full load for many starters. “He’s been diligent in his rehab, and he’s been consistent with the work he’s put in,” Brooks said. “He’s continued to build up his conditioning, and he’ll keep developing. He’s still a young player in this league.” As for Beal, the talented other half of Washington’s backcourt, Brooks said he’s impressed. “He has a great shot,” Brooks said. “He can shoot from deep range, he has a pull-up game, he has a pin-down game, and his pick and roll game is improving but…I also think he can be close to 4-5 assists a game every night. [Beal] has definitely improved his passing, and he has to – everybody has to keep on working on passing the basketball.” Asked what he brings to the franchise, especially when it comes to coaching the younger players that populate the Wizards’ youthful roster, Brooks cited consistency. “The players will always see consistency out of me,” he vowed. “Whether we win by an incredible buzzer beater of a shot or we lose a very difficult game, the next day I’m always consistent. I’ve had some good coaches along the way that had the same approach. My staff and organization will come to work every day and find ways to improve and focus on getting better.”

By On Tap Staff We keep locals in the know about the latest and greatest food and drink locales town, our top foodie pick of the month, and spots that have recently closed their doors.

NEW IcyCode Ice Cream Rolls Open: Nov. 12 Location: Dupont Circle Lowdown: We all love ice cream, well, except for my lactose intolerance friends (sorry buds), but aren’t scoops a bit played out? Okay, probably not, otherwise that Dippin Dots idea would have evolved past a stand in your local, likely flailing, mall. However, sheets of ice cream give a different texture to the creamy goodness and DC officially welcomed its first locale serving just that with the arrival of IcyCode. The experts at the new spot prepare the rolls of ice cream right in front of you, spreading flavors such as caramel and fudge on the frosty treat while you wait; oh, and there are toppings. So if you’re feeling a literal twist on your favorite dessert, be sure to shuffle over to IcyCode. IcyCode Ice Cream Rolls: 2029 P St. NW, DC; www.icycode.com

Open: Nov. 4 Location: Petworth Lowdown: Himitsu is Japanese for secret, which is sort of odd because if I were a restaurateur I would definitely be opposed to my establishment being, well, secret. Regardless, this new “Asian and South American” inspired restaurant’s explosive dishes are far from hidden, as the eaterie has already picked up accolades from the Washingtonian, the City Paper and the Washington Post. Along with the eats, Himitsu also offers stunning cocktail pairs to go along with their delicious morsels, so don’t hesitate to check this awesome “secret” out. Coffee Republic

Open: October 29 Location: Rockville Lowdown: Coined as a neighborhood shop providing socially conscious goods, Rockville’s newest coffee spot has the look and feel of a large traditional kitchen. BEHIND THE BAR

By Trent Johnson

Each December marks a landmark day in American history - the repeal of Prohibition. Without that turn of events, we’d likely still be turning to our neighborhood speakeasy to quench our thirst. While speakeasies aren’t a necessity today, they still hold appeal - for their cozy ambiance and retro nostalgia, not to mention fabulous drinks. In a toast to our 21st Amendment, meet the brains behind the bar at three locals.

Daniel Schuettinger

Photo: Lindsay Galatro

Bar PX

On Tap: What are you doing to differentiate yourself from other speakeasies? Daniel Schuettinger: PX just celebrated its 10-year anniversary, and when we first opened, there were perhaps two other establishments in the country that you could consider speakeasies. We also have the advantage of physical history. The building we’re in is over 100 years old, and the bar itself was originally an illegal gambling den.

Chantal Tseng

Photo: Lindsay Galatro

Literary Cocktails in the Reading Room On Tap: How did the Reading Room get started as a speakeasy? Chantal Tseng: Last year, owner Paul Ruppert of Petworth Citizen and Upshur Street Books recruited me to help lead a bar program in the Reading Room, which is the lending library area in the back of both places. In keeping with the ambiance, I proposed creating changing weekly menus of cocktails inspired by literature.

OT: How has the menu changed since your opening? DS: We generally like to keep the ingredients seasonal. We do, however, have a small section of the menu reserved for PX standards. These are all fan favorites – cocktails that guests have been enjoying since we opened.

OT: Why do you think people enjoy reading and drinking simultaneously? CT: Well, both are certainly forms of escapism at times, and can therefore go hand-in-hand. Also, many folks like to read at bars already. Rather than smoking while drinking at a bar, it is often nice to have a book to keep you company.

OT: Do you think you would have risked running a speakeasy in the Prohibition era? DS: I don’t know that I would have risked running one myself, but I would have absolutely worked in one. I imagine the atmosphere would have been so much fun, and everyone enjoys a hint of danger.

OT: How do you decide on the themes for the reading lounge? CT: I choose a different author or set of authors every weekend based on what I feel like reading, and based on timing and relevance. For example, we began the month of November with Bob Dylan as my muse since he has just made news as a newly honored Nobel Laureate.

OT: Why do you think retro establishments like PX are so popular? DS: Our culture adores nostalgia, and I think people will always want to visit places that hearken back to the past.

OT: How do you keep such a robust book collection? CT: All the books on the shelves are donations. People frequently bring enough books to keep the shelves full.

OT: PX has a limited seating of 25 patrons. Is that for a layer of exclusivity and intimacy? DS: It’s certainly not out of a desire to be exclusive, though there is that perception. As a result, there is an excellent feeling of intimacy at PX, and we have a strict “no standing” policy to enhance that.

OT: Does the Reading Room have any plans for the holidays? CT: Whenever there are five Thursdays in one month, we host an Absinthe Night, which we call #5thColumnThursdays. We will showcase our absinthe fountain, and have a catered selection of featured absinthes as well as cocktails.

Sam Brooks Captain Gregory’s

On Tap: Why did you choose Sugar Shack Donuts as Captain Gregory’s home? Sam Brooks: Our location being inside of Sugar Shack Donuts has been so much fun to be a part of. It is always fun to watch people’s reactions when they see a wall slide open to reveal a secret bar inside of a donut shop. OT: How has Captain Gregory done in this part of Alexandria? SB: Even though we have been open for nearly 18 months now and are busy, I am constantly reminded about how few people know that Captain Gregory’s exists. OT: What are some items on your current drink menu that patrons can look forward to? SB: Printing a new menu each and every day has proven to be a great way to keep setting creative challenges for ourselves behind the bar. One cocktail that we particularly love is titled “The Holidays Are Over, But I Still Want Stuffing.” It combines our own caramelized sweet onion vermouth with celery, sage, thyme and caraway. Other drinks include an Old Fashioned made with a canned yam-infused bourbon and a spiced yam syrup, as well as a rye infused with toasted pecans and spices, which is then washed with a miso brown butter. OT: Do you consider yourself more laid back than other “speakeasies?” SB: In general, I think the atmosphere that we try to cultivate here is one free of judgment and pretension. Everyone that works at Captain Gregory’s really loves what they do, and we just want to share that with as many people as we can. It means so much to us that people take the time to come and visit our tiny hole in the wall to see what we are working on. We try not to take that for granted. OT: What is your favorite part of being involved with this establishment? SB: Working with people who keep me challenged and grounded every day has been so rewarding for me. Our staff is comprised of some of the most talented people in the industry, and it is such an honor to work alongside them every night.

The Bierdo “Lets Get Beer’d!”

By Nick Hardt

Hoppy Holidays, Bierdos! Here’s a little present from me to all of you. As

you know, I’ve been beer traveling for over a decade, so for me to find a local diamond in the rough that makes my eyes sparkle is often a rare thing. I’ve seen it all. However, when you stumble into a brand new place and the beer, atmosphere, food, staff and location are amazing, you have to give credit where credit is due (especially when you accidentally stumbled upon it Christmas shopping at IKEA in Woodbridge). But I digress.

Photos: Nick Hardt

The Night Mare Oatmeal Stout Float, 5 percent: I’ll admit it. It’s a gimmick. But not all gimmicks have made me drink two of them. This dark, grainy, chocolate, creamy oatmeal stout (also excellent by itself ) topped with pumpkin-spiced vanilla ice cream might be the tastiest winter drink you’ll ever have this season, or the only thing you can’t buy seasonally at Starbucks. Rating: I will never NOT buy this at Brew Republic. In a world full of tragedies, this beer float makes me still believe we all have a fighting chance and there is still hope in the universe. So yummy! Mockingbird Rye IPA, 6.5 percent: Robust malts and citrusy hops dominate this copper-colored rye IPA. This is my go-to (non-dessert) beer here. It’s one of those beers that’s fun to drink, and has a great mouthfeel and texture from the of rye malts. Rating: Mock. ING! Bird. YEAH! So good. Wayward Wit, 4.7 percent: There is only one word that comes to my mind with this Belgian-style wheat beer: bright. The Wayward Wit features citrusy zest with coriander, hoppy earthy spice and a unique bright sweetness. It’s extremely drinkable! Rating: This beer has zing and pizazz!

Brew Republic Bierwerks is my humble gift to you, Bierdos. You won’t find it on your Untapped app or in BeerAdvocate, as it’s brand new and no one’s wanted to spill the beans on Woodbridge’s best kept secret until now. However, it feels like they’ve always been there, and their tasting room is fantastic! Story has it that ex-local politician and co-owner Jeff Frederick traded passing bills for pouring beers, and with the help of the amazingly talented brewer Darcy Heisey, this brewery will be turning a lot of heads and filling tons of growlers. There’s also live music on Saturdays, trivia on Tuesdays, Randall Night on Mondays (Google it, non-Bierdos), yoga twice a month and other great monthly events if you need another excuse (you won’t) between beers and tasty bites. Simply put though, they had ME at the BEER! Here are the offerings that made my oh-so-naughty list. Indulge responsibly!

I

n general, I tend to cringe at holiday-themed gifts because they feel a bit too “on-thenose.” But holiday beers are one glad exception. Think about it. Beer is less expensive than clothing or tech gifts, easy to wrap, and even easier to customize if you know just a little bit about a person’s beer preferences. So, for many occasions, I think that giving liquid gifts is the way to go. Here in the DMV, we’re lucky to have a lot of breweries putting out holiday projects that make great stocking stuffers and excellent conversation pieces for your next holiday party. Most of the beers featured here have already hit grocery and liquor store shelves for the winter, but many brewers are also releasing small-batch projects that are only available in big bottles, on tap, or at the brewery. The best buying advice I can give is this: if one of the beers featured here strikes your interest, be sure to do a little research online and at your neighborhood beer retailer to see where you can pick some up before the shelves are bare.

By Eric Kozlik

What makes a “holiday beer”? What are the rules for this increasingly common style? There seem to be two answers to this question, based on popular consensus. 1. A “holiday ale” or “winter warmer” is a specific type of beer generally brewed with less hops and more malt than other seasonal ales, and with the addition of spices or other ingredients that invoke traditional holiday flavors, such as cinnamon, cloves, allspice or dried orange peel. 2. A holiday beer is any beer (generally dark, though not always) that puts you in the holiday spirit. The only rule is that it must be “special”– higher ABV, special aging, unique flavors, you name it – a little something extra that sets the beer apart from all the rest. Recently, brewers have been gravitating toward the second definition, and rightly so. Because when your sole directives are “brew it dark, and make it special,” you’ve got a lot of creative freedom to work your own personal magic. As consumers, all we have to do is sit back and decide which interpretation of the holiday flavor palate we like best. And I’m all for that.

There’s an added benefit to the categorical flexibility of winter seasonals, according to Mary Ann Burns from Old Ox Brewery in Ashburn, Va., who told me, “We want our beers to shine for the entire winter season, and not just during the holidays. After all, beer should be enjoyed equally whether you’re making merry with friends during the holidays or enjoying a quiet snow day in February.” Thinking back on how I spent my last snow day, I’m inclined to agree. Of course, wherever there’s consensus, you’ll always find a few malcontents, and I love malcontents because they keep life interesting. When I caught up with Chris Van Orden from Port City Brewing, he explained, “Our winter seasonal, Tidings, bucks the conventional ‘dark-beer-in-winter’ wisdom and instead locks in some of those warm summer flavors to enjoy in the bitter cold, making it a particular joy to drink on its own in the dead of winter.” Touché, Port City. Well played.

These days, beer pairings are getting more popular, and your mom’s wine pairing mnemonic (dark with dark meat, white with white meat) just won’t cut it. Thankfully, our local brewers have been particularly forthcoming when it comes to recommending how to best enjoy their winter projects. According to brewer Bill Madden at Mad Fox Brewing Company, “Rich, dark beers like our Festivus Ale are best enjoyed after dinner like an aperitif.” And that makes sense. If you’ve got a dark beer with a particularly high ABV, save that bad boy for after you’ve cleared your plate and before dessert comes out. The decision to unbutton your pants is entirely up to you. Others have been a bit more experimental when it comes to pairing advice. Take Atlas Brew Works, for example. They claim that “pairings for La Saison des Fêtes [their holiday project] include spicy sausage and reindeer steaks.” Personally, I’ve never tasted reindeer, but I would bet you any amount of money that your spouse will frown upon you putting bear traps on the roof because your beer label “got you thinking.” In the end, we must all accept that some pairings are just not worth it.

By Tess Ankeny Gone are the days when champagne and other sparkling wines were only consumed on birthdays, New Year’s Eve, and anniversaries. Sparkling wine is in its heyday, and its popularity is showing no signs of fading. Nearly every restaurant and bar in the city offers a selection of sparkling wines, and many of them have several options by the glass. And it’s not just the big name producers you’ll see; it’s getting easier to find a variety of styles, including grower champagne, food-friendly pét-nat, hipster cava and small-production

50

prosecco. Sparkling wine has always been appreciated as a great aperitif, but popularity has been growing as casual diners and industry professionals alike have recognized the nearly endless food pairing possibilities of sparklers. From potato chips to elevated haute cuisine, traditional Italian, Spanish tapas or Asian fusion, it seems sparkling wine truly matches with just about everything. Though the sparkling wine scene in DC continues to evolve, it’s by no means a totally new scene. Marcel’s in Georgetown is one of the few remaining traditional fine dining establishments in the city, as restaurants trends toward being more urban. Marcel’s is home to one of the largest champagne collections in the city, and there’s no doubt that this is the place to treat yourself to some truly world-class champagne producers – Krug, Ruinart, Moët & Chandon, Dom Pérignon and La Grande Dame are just a few key players on the “by the glass” list. On “National Champagne Day” in October, the

restaurant hosted a champagne-pairing dinner and featured a special champagne flight at the bar, both of which were a resounding success and attracted a wide variety of ages and occupations. In light of this, the restaurant plans to begin hosting a monthly “Champagne Night,” so keep an eye on their website and social media for details. Another sure sign that sparkling wine is on the rise in the city: the founder of Bon Vivant DC, Alison Marriott, and Young Winos of DC, Jess Hagadorn, recently joined forces to found the first official DC Champagne Week, which took place in November. Their shared passion for the wines and people of France’s Champagne region fueled their desire to bring this event to the city. The celebration included a grand tasting event with eight champagne producers at the Daughters of the American Revolution O’Byrne Gallery, a seasonal pairing dinner at Ripple and a terroir-focused class.

A Quick Guide to

parkling wine is in the spotlight at some soon-to-open enterprises, which should come as no surprise in a drinking scene well acquainted with focused bars. Consider sherry at Mockingbird Hill, whiskey at Jack Rose Dining Saloon and Barrel, and cider at ANXO Cidery & Pintxos Bar, to name but a few. 1230 Restaurant & Champagne Lounge is opening soon in Shaw – hopefully by year’s end – and there are whispers that another sparkling winefocused joint may also be opening soon. For those who can’t wait, one current hotspot for sparkling wines in the District, notably champagne, is the popular wine destination Proof. Brent Kroll, formerly with the Neighborhood Restaurant Group, recently joined the team as general manager, working alongside wine director Joe Quinn. Kroll weighed in on the growing influence of sparklers in the city. On Tap: Any favorite spots for sparkling wine in DC? Brent Kroll: For an extravagant selection, I look to Plume at The Jefferson or Marcel’s. For every day, I like the value-driven sparkling wine at 2 Amys. OT: Have you noticed changes within the DC scene as far as interest in sparkling wines? BK: Grower/farmer champagne is still trending. It’s really great value due to the lack of marketing, but just like with larger producers, it can be hit or miss. The competition [with grower champagnes] is causing big houses to get pretty aggressive with pricing, and the bidding war for “by the glass” placements is going to get even more intense – to the point where a glass of champagne won’t be outrageously more expensive than other sparkling wine selections. OT: Do you have a favorite sparkling wine and food pairing? BK: I love Fiorini Lambrusco di Sorbara with charcuterie for a daily basis type of pairing. OT: Any new sparkling wine producers or regions we should keep on our radar? BK: Keep an eye out for Brazilian sparkling wine led by the unbelievable Cave Geisse!

So while it’s true that sparkling wines shouldn’t be just for the holidays, there’s no better time to try some new styles to share with friends and family this season. No matter if you’re celebrating the New Year or just celebrating a Tuesday, having a pre-dinner drink or an elaborate wine pairing dining experience – popping a bottle of bubbly is always in order. What more convincing do you need?

he 25-year-old Laurel, Md.-based DJ and producer “zacheser” is looking forward to a holiday season where he’s going to “actually get to see his industry friends when they’re not behind the decks.” It’s been a big year for the DJ, born Zach Eser, traveling to Denver for the Cloak and Dagger Music Festival and releasing three remixes and an original production, all while gaining a national following via dance music website Hype Machine. However, there’s a lot more going on in the mind and soul of the creative force seen and heard locally behind the decks at U Street Music Hall, Soundcheck, Rock & Roll Hotel and more. “I [became] interested in playing music for people when I was at St. Mary’s College [on the Chesapeake Bay in southeastern Maryland],” Eser says. He describes that era as a good time to get into dance music. The DJ threw underground college parties and describes himself as the kid who grew up on his dad loving Hall & Oates, and dove headlong into sounds he’d never heard before. When it comes to spinning in the nation’s capital, he says that “DC

has an atmosphere where I feel the most comfortable. It was the first place where I felt that way, and knew I could be who I wanted to be and do what I want to do.” As far as offering something more, he notes that while DJing, he realized that, “[t]here weren’t…well…there weren’t a lot of fat kids.” “There were a lot of DJs with athletic builds,’” he says. “[And in] dance music culture, [coming] from a place where everybody was an outsider and not the world’s view of beautiful, I want to show that [plus-sized] people still fit in dance culture and can still pursue music.” “I’m weird, wonky, play house music and [when I DJ], I wear makeup and loud colors,” he says. “I don’t necessarily treat holiday parties like a different gig, but I do think that they really present a lot of people, if they’re not already big partiers, with the opportunity to let their hair down and dance.” As Eser looks forward to what’s on the horizon in the New Year, the DJ says he’s done a lot of the dirty work, and is now allowing himself to be happy, work on his sound and image, and play music that he describes as “unapologetically me.” To sum things up, zacheser “can’t be more stoked.”

By Courtney Sexton t’s not always the case that when you sit down to interview a musician you are immediately disarmed. And it’s definitely not always the case that you smile and laugh later when you listen to the transcript, and then again when you read it over while writing the piece. What I mean is, you aren’t always lucky enough to feel like the artist on the other side of the table, or at the other end of the line, is just being real. But it’s exactly what happened when I got the opportunity to speak to Band of Horses frontman Ben Bridwell. Sure his charming Southern accent may have thrown me off – largely because it doesn’t come through that heavy when he sings – but it was Bridwell’s easy joking and genuine gut responses that were so refreshing. For example, here’s how the start of our conversation went. CS: So, how has tour been so far? BB: [deadpan] Oh, not good, Courtney, let me tell you, not good. CS: [caught off-guard] …Oh… uh… BB: [laughs] Nah, nah. It’s all good! We’re, I think we’re kinda hittin’ the stride right now, hopefully. I’m gonna knock on some damn wood if I can find it.

Ice. Broken. Okay, I see you now, Ben. And it makes sense. The band’s latest album has the same effect – while previous releases are certainly strong in their own ways, Band of Horses’ fifth studio release, Why Are You OK (out June 10 on Interscope), offers an honesty – especially sonically – that makes it stand out in the catalogue. Apparently, that was Bridwell’s intent. “With this one, it was a much more deliberate approach to everything,” he said. “Lyrically, textually, I wanted it to be something I wouldn’t be ashamed of. It was easier to stand behind and easier to be enthused to play live, honestly. I wanted the songs to be more honest and I wanted to be more honest with myself. So I believe, even in the sonic sense, it was a bit more of a return to center, and even though it’s a bit confessional and cringe-inducing at times, I wanted to at least tell the truth a bit more than just looking for a clever turn of phrase.” We hear traces of earlier work (chords from my old favorite “Detlef Schrempf” float around some of the tracks on the first half ), but Why Are You OK is decidedly less melancholy, packs a little more punch and seems in some ways even playful. “Casual Party,” for example, is full of catchy pop that masks a slightly darker side in the lyrics, and

the intentional twang in “Country Teen” is endearing as hell. But that doesn’t mean that Bridwell fails to address some of the big questions like, “But are we really in love? Completely in love?” and, “Why spend half the time indifferent and the other half alone?” Track five, “In a Drawer,” acknowledges the “what could have beens” while still keeping an eye toward what’s next. Musically, the song sounds like that thing you lost or forgot about and didn’t really know you were looking for, which seems to be the essence of the album for Bridwell. “Maybe it tells a story of starting out and having no damn idea what you’re doing. That first record is the first songs I ever wrote, and that was in my mid to late twenties. I never set out to be a musician, ever, in my life – like it was the most far-fetched scheme that could ever come to fruition. So I think it probably shows some naiveté, being led by the nose at times, but hopefully some redemption, at least where we stand now…in trusting your gut and following your own sense of self, hopefully.” Band of Horses has a somewhat colorful history of “dabbling in the major label system,” and on the flip side, Bridwell even ran his own label before turning to making music.

“I [thought], well, if I’ve got the right to bitch about music, I should give it a try myself and just see how hard the damn thing is. Turns out, it’s hard as shit but I got lucky as hell.” After nearly 10 years playing together as the current lineup including Bridwell, Creighton Barrett, Ryan Monroe, Tyler Ramsey and Bill Reynolds, and with a Grammy nomination (for 2010’s beloved Infinite Arms) under their belts, it seems Band of Horses has something more than just luck on their side. Obviously, it’s talent, but it also is perhaps a groundedness. Amid rising fame and being on and off the road, they’re managing to raise families and still appreciate what life has brought. “I’ve really enjoyed the surprising turn of events that’s led to more than a decade plus on the other end of the spectrum in music,” Bridwell said. “I couldn’t be more grateful for it.” Before our time was up, I asked Bridwell one more question: “What do people never ask you that you wish they would?” “Why are Creighton and Ryan so fucking handsome? That’s what I wanna be asked. There you go. God, they look good.”

I’ve really enjoyed the surprising turn of events that’s led to more than a decade plus on the other end of the spectrum in music. I couldn’t be more grateful for it. Band of Horses will play two shows at the 9:30 Club on December 30 and 31. Bridwell said they haven’t played a big New Year’s Eve show in awhile. “I think we’ll make it fun, and make it a different kind of show than you see from Band of Horses on any other night.” The band’s December 30 show is sold out, but $75 tickets are still available to the NYE show. Check 9:30’s website for details.

Rainbow Kitten Surprise Stop us if you’ve heard an origin story like before: two college freshman met in their dorm room and began writing music only to form an awesome band. Yeah, that’s the story behind Rainbow Kitten Surprise, which is the most hipster band name perhaps ever. The band uses soulful lyrics combined with acoustic strums of guitars with sporadic pinches of “dynamic instrumentation.” The band’s website assures you’ll be humming along, and we concur because the tunes are undeniably catchy. Pasadena Band The Pasadena Band has been around the block, touring for many years all while cultivating a national audience. The Maryland group often produces well thought out lyrics and grooves any audience can dance to. Though the band is almost constantly touring throughout the country, they recently added DC native Zach Bellas to the lineup, helping to reinvigorate the group for future tours on the horizon. Doors open at 7 p.m., show starts at 9 p.m. Tickets cost $8 in advance, $10 day of show. Music Picks self titled debut album in the rural midwest. The freedom of the environment is easy to spot in the tracks, as the group sounds like an 80’s indie band with lo-fi and all. If you’re in the mood for an early show, this upbeat group of guitar grapplers might be your speed. Doors at 6 p.m., show at 6:30 p.m. Tickets cost $10 in advance and $12 day of. DC9: 1940 9th St. NW, DC; www.dcnine.com

Atlas Road Crew Atlas Road Crew have only been a band for five years, but they are already generating buzz and packing music venues across the country. This Southern rock band with soul accents was formed when its members were attending The University of South Carolina, and their first EP was produced by Mark Bryan of Hootie & The Blowfish. Also appearing Saturday, December 10 with Stop Light Observations. With Mo Lowda & The Humble. Doors open at 7 p.m. $15 in advance; $17 at the door. Gypsy Sally’s: 3401 K St. NW, DC; www.gypsysallys.com

Dragonette After a two year hiatus from making music, Dragonette is hard at work on another yet to be titled album. Regardless of the gap between releases, the group has still been touring internationally, playing with names such as Major Lazer, Mike Snow and the Presets. With indie pop principals, the group’s music has enjoyed success in pop culture and on the radio, which has provided fuel for the proverbial fire. Show at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $20. U Street Music Hall: 1115 U St. NW, DC; www.ustreetmusichall.com

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 10 Emancipator Since the 2006 release of Soon It Will Be Cold Enough Emancipator, or Douglas Appling, has been a mainstay in the EDM scene. Appreciated for his organic approach and fusion of different sounds from various cultures, his sets are often diverse and engaging. In 2015, Emancipator released Seven Seas after working on the album for nearly two years through extensive mixing and collaborations. After a busy two years, the performer is likely looking to close out 2016 with a bang on U St. Show starts at 10 p.m. Tickets cost $20. U Street Music Hall: 1115 U St. NW, DC; www.ustreetmusichall.com

Kacey Musgrave The two-time Grammy winner is touring on her first Christmas tour titled “A Very Kacey Christmas Tour” on the back of an album of the same name. This will be the famed country singer’s first foray into holiday themed music, but if Musgrave tackles the subject matter with the same confidence and fierceness she does the twangy genre, this will surely be a fun show. Don’t believe us, ask her; “I’m making sure these are going to be some very magical nights.” Shows at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $53-$68. SUNDAY, DECEMBER 11 Matt Pond PA Matt Pond has been making music since 1998, and his most recent album, “Winter Lives,” just came out last month. The “PA” part of his name was a tribute to his musical beginnings in Philly, although Pond has sometimes dropped the initials, only to bring them back later. His indie tunes are hard to classify, but Pond has covered artists like Elvis Costello and Oasis, which gives you an idea of his influences. With Moving Panoramas. Doors open at 8:30 p.m. $15. MONDAY, DECEMBER 12 Big Bad Voodoo Daddy Big Bad Voodoo Daddy was started by a couple of former punks who decided to, er, swing in a different direction. Yes, these guys were at the forefront of the swing revival, and their profile received a major boost from their appearance in the 1996 indie flick “Swingers.” Since then, BBVD has been touring and recording constantly, and every winter, they hit the road for their special holiday tour. Don’t miss it! Show at 7:30 p.m. $49.50. The Birchmere: 3701 Mt. Vernon Ave. Alexandria, VA; www.birchmere.com

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 13 Mac Miller Hailing from Pittsburgh, few rappers have evolved from album to album like Mac Miller, who burst on the scene with rhymes about drugs and life as an adolescent is now touring on the heels of a full blown romance album in The Divine Feminine. With beat experimentation and a textbook, old school rhyming style, Miller is for sure on the rise in the rap game. Lack faith, well he’s rubbed shoulders in the studio emcees such as Kendrick Lamar, Action Bronson and Earl Sweatshirt. Doors open at 7 p.m., show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $35. The Fillmore at Silver Spring: 8656 Colesville Rd. Silver Spring, MD; www.fillmoresilverspring.com

Rasputina When dealing with classical instruments, they are often accompanied by a set of traditional standards. For Rasputina, and their cellos, the rock group has often found the best music comes when shattering those expectations and creating new sounds with old tools. Couple this with costumes of marginalized women from different historical periods and you get a raucous group prepared to storm the stage with screams and strings. Doors open at 6 p.m., show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $20 in advance, $25 day of the show. The Howard Theatre: 620 T St. NW, DC; www.thehowardtheatre.com

The Funk Ark This DC-based band, signed to Thievery Corporation’s ESL Music, is led by pianist Will Rast. Their sound is funk and Afrobeat, and the band is populated with some of the best jazz musicians from around the DC area. With Three Man Soul Machine. WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 21 SATURDAY, DECEMBER 17 Driftwood Though the name “Driftwood” implies either a rigid band with a country and folk sound, this band often shies away from those strict identifiers. Instead the group hailing from Binghamton, New York attempts to blend and blur the lines of preconceived genres in order to reflect the truest sound of the members. With three songwriters constantly collaborating and honing on each song’s particular sound, this band doesn’t plan on settling within a genre anytime soon. Doors open at 9 p.m., show at 9:30 p.m. Tickets cost $15. Jammin Java: 227 Maple Ave. E. Vienna, VA; www.jamminjava.com

Darlene Love Legendary singer Darlene Love comes to town for “A Darlene Love Christmas.” Love is famous for hits like “He’s a Rebel” and “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” and is inextricably linked to producer Phil Spector, who she worked with early in her career. Released in 1989 as the lead single from his album “The Biz Never Sleeps,” the song “Just a Friend” made Biz a household name. Besides live appearances, Biz appears in movies and TV shows, including the kids show “Yo Gabba Gabba.” Doors open at 7 p.m. $15.50. The Fillmore Silver Spring: 8656 Colesville Rd. In Your Memory During the past few years, In Your Memory has been carving a niche on the “post-hardcore” scene in DC. The group taunts a jazz-y twist, and it’s easy to hear, especially in the basslines, which somehow stick out through the breakneck riffs and melodic, but gruffy, vocals. With a few changeups over the years, the band is now finding their footing, and only project upwards, so if you need some heavy tracks In Your Memory, check the locally based band out. Doors open at 7 p.m., show at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $12. Rock and Roll Hotel: 1353 H St. NE, DC; www.rockandrollhoteldc.com Joe Budden After more than 15 years in the hip hop game, it’s arguable Joe Budden produced his best work with his recent album Rage & The Machine. With subject matter such as depression, relationship problems and even addiction, Budden has always allowed his lyrics to carry a certain weight portraying the real happenings in his life. While some may see rap as a young man’s game, Budden enjoys his veteran status even referring to himself as “Uncle Joe.” Look, just Christmas gift yourself a pair of tickets and thank us later. The Howard Theatre: 620 T St. NW, DC; www.thehowardtheatre.com The Pietasters Since forming at Virginia Tech in 1990, The Pietasters have been on the scene in DC and the mid-Atlantic area, pumping out ska tunes for loyal fans. Lead singer Stephen Jackson has been the stalwart member all along, and continues to lead the band to this day. With Mephiskapheles, Hub City Stompers, and Loving Paupers. Doors open at 8 p.m. $15. 9:30 Club: 815 V St. NW, DC; www.930.com Virginia Coalition Virginia Coalition, known to their fans around the area as VACO, have been playing together for almost 20 years. Meeting as friends during high school in Alexandria, VACO has been moving fans with their blend of rock and folk since 1997. They don’t play a whole lots of shows anymore, so catch them whenever you get the chance. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. $12.25-$17.25. The Hamilton: 600 14th St. NW, DC; www.thehamiltondc.com

Clutch With a growling melodic approach to music, Clutch is a bit harder than a rock band, but not quite a metal band. This is good for people who aren’t really in the market for music that’s so fast and so loud that it’s hard to understand the depth of the lyrics. The Maryland group has been performing since 1991, and have always made it a goal to differentiate each album from the last, which gives them an eclectic catalog for live shows. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $30. 9:30 Club: 815 V St. NW, DC; www.930.com

John Kadlecik Band It’s happened a couple times in rock and roll. The leader of a tribute band gets plucked from on high to appear with the actual band they are paying tribute to. This happened to Takoma Park’s John Kadlecik when he was invited to tour with Furthur in 2009. Furthur consisted of Bob Weir and Phil Lesh of the Grateful Dead, and Kadlecik had spent years with his Dead tribute band Dark Star Orchestra. With the John K band, he performs Dead songs as well as originals. Also appearing Friday, December 30. Doors open at 7 p.m. $15 in advance; $20 day of show. The State Theatre: 220 N.
