Nourish Your Mind, Body + Soul at Kennedy Center Arts + Wellbeing Festival
By Paige H. Muller
Going to museums to look at art or the theatre to see a show, or even creating art yourself, is fun and entertaining. But there’s something deeper going on. We don’t get just aesthetic or intellectual benefits from engaging with the arts—they also benefit the mind and body, and feed the soul.
Pablo Picasso once said, “Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” So if you’re feeling like you need a little artistic nourishment, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts has just the recipe.
The famed performing arts center looks at the connection between how art inspires and benefits our everyday lives during its Arts & Wellbeing festival. This year, the festival launches Nourish—Nourishing Mind, Body, and Soul Through the Arts, a monthlong series of programs throughout October 2024 exploring how nourishment comes not only from food, but also from the arts and its impacts to mental and physical wellbeing.
Feast your senses and feed your soul through diverse programming, such as a cooking class that explores the culinary inspiration of art with food, book talks with culinary icons like Ina Garten, a community sing-along at Washington National Cathedral, dance masterclasses, an immersive sound experience and meditation in the renowned Concert Hall, and more. The events are a mix of free and paid tickets.

Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company’s Fall Lineup: A Season of Provocative New Works
By ChatGPT
This fall, Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company offers an electrifying mix of productions, beginning with The Comeuppance by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins. Running from September 8 to October 6, this play is a haunting and humorous reflection on friendship and accountability. Set during a high school reunion in Prince George’s County, Maryland, the play explores the lives of the self-proclaimed “Multi-Ethnic Reject Group” as they grapple with their past and confront an eerie, supernatural force. Directed by Morgan Green, this production is a co-presentation with The Wilma Theater and stars Woolly Mammoth’s own Erika Rose.
On October 7, The Ford/Hill Project debuts in a powerful one-night-only event. Created by Lee Sunday Evans and Elizabeth Marvel, the play juxtaposes the testimonies of Anita Hill and Christine Blasey Ford. Through verbatim transcripts and a minimalist ensemble, this timely piece revisits the profound impact these women had on the nation’s most powerful institutions.
Finally, Woolly Mammoth ends the year with a joyous burst of comedy as The Second City returns with Dance Like There’s Black People Watching. Running in December, this show delivers a much-needed release of laughter with biting social commentary, improv, and musical sketches, celebrating Black Excellence in all its hilarious forms. Woolly Mammoth continues to challenge and entertain, blending humor, social reflection, and artistic innovation this season.
Atlantis
The newest venue in the IMP portfolio was designed to evoke the original 9:30 Club at 930 F Street NW, which itself was first called the Atlantis after a song by DC’s punk heroes Bad Brains. Old school 9:30 Club fans who walk into the new Atlantis may be relieved or flabbergasted to learn the new space has a nod to an infamous, view-ruining pole in the middle of the dance floor. The 450-person venue is a shrunk-down version of the current 9:30 Club (which is next door) with a small floor in front of a small stage and sparse balcony space. At this intimate space, you’re likely to see local acts and the “next big thing” on their way up with an occasional nod to a big name.
Lincoln Theatre
Merriweather Post Pavilion
Built in 1922, artists Luke Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong and Sarah Vaughn once played at the historic theatre on U Street NW. Today, the grand and elegant space hosts a variety of entertainment. Music acts tend to be established vets but emerging acts pop up on occasion. Beyond music, it’s a popular space for events like author talks, comedy shows and live podcasts.
Once destined for demolition, Merriweather Post Pavilion marks its 20th year this concert season as the crown jewel of outdoor concert venues in the DMV. Nestled in 40 acres of forest, smack between Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, It’s a crossroads of genres, where rock, jazz, classical, and electronic converge. From the psychedelic tunes of the Grateful Dead to the soul-stirring performances of Janis Joplin and the modern anthems of Arcade Fire, Merriweather has seen legends come and go. At Merriweather Post Pavilion, music meets outdoors with the ultimate “day out in the country at your fun uncle’s swanky place” vibes.
Whether you see a show at 9:30 Club, Anthem, Atlantis, Lincoln Theatre or Merriweather Post Pavilion, you can rack up special perks and benefits with IMPs “Friends with Benefits” membership program. Members get presale tickets, opportunities to snag tickets to sold out shows, admission to exclusive member parties, and points to score food, drinks and merch.

All Five I.M.P. Venues Rock
By Paige H. Muller
You might not know exactly what I.M.P. is but chances are pretty good you’ve seen a concert at one of their venues. The independent concert promotion and production company that started in co-owner Seth Hurwitz’s bedroom in 1980 has grown into a music empire with five venues in the DMV under its belt that puts on shows for 500 to 50,000 fans at a time.
The appropriately named I.M.P., a sly reference to the 1963 classic song “It’s My Party,” by Lesley Gore, owns the renowned 9:30 Club, and counts the Anthem, Atlantis and Lincoln Theater in DC and Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Md among its portfolio.
Each IMP venue has its own vibe, so here’s a quick snapshot of what you can expect for your next concert outing.
9:30 Club
The Anthem
Much beloved by locals and touring artists, the iconic venue is heralded as one of the best live music venues in America and has hosted groups like Nirvana, R.E.M., Red Hot Chili Peppers, Fugazi and Public Enemy. The best indie and up-and-coming performers are the main attractions, though now and then a bigger act such as Adele, Drake or Ed Sheeran stop by to soak up the legendary vibe of this large but cozy space. The standing-room only space is stripped down and a bit basic, and wears its DIY attitudas a badge of honor.
The first midsize venue of its kind in the District (there’s a max of 6,000), the Anthem opened in 2017 at the Wharf in the southwest neighborhood. It feels vast and industrial, but has elegant design touches, as well as specially angled seats that ensure there’s not a bad seat in the house. The Anthem hosts everything from intimate performances to major headliners like Janelle Monae. It opened with a sold-out Foo Fighters show, and hasn’t slowed down a bit. Notable music acts make up the majority of the calendar, but the programming does range. Think of it as a grown-up and more sophisticated version of the 9:30 Club.

Warner Theatre
Located in the heart of downtown DC, Warner Theatre is one of the oldest theaters in DC. Originally called Earle Theatre, it opened in 1924 and featured vaudeville acts and silent movies. The venue has hosted legendary performers like Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald; the names of the famous acts that have performed on its stage since reopening in 1992 are immortalized outside on its own Walk of Fame.
Warner continues to be a coveted venue for musicians, comedians, politicians, and podcasters and venue host for the BET awards. Upcoming shows include: Peter Frampton (Sep 10), Lalah Hathaway (Sep 26), Herbie Hancock (Sep 27), Billy Ocean (Oct 29), Brian McKcNight (Nov 14) and many more.
With Live Nation Premium membership, you get express entry to skip waiting in line. Thirty minutes before doors open, members can relax in the VIP speakeasy-style 1924 Lounge and can order small plates from the comfort of their seats. The exclusive menu features enticing nibbles like egg rolls, mini crab cakes and chicken cordon bleu bites. Additional perks include complimentary parking, which given the challenge of parking downtown, is alone worth the membership.
Fillmore Silver Spring
Named after the iconic San Francisco Fillmore, the Maryland-based venue has hosted rock’s most legendary acts for decades. Easily accessible via the Metro Red Line, the intimate yet electric atmosphere attracts artists of all genres, from rock to indie, and metal to comedy. Over the coming months, the standing-room-only venue is set to host the Red Clay Strays (Sep 18), Lawrence (Sep 20), All the Feels R&B Tour (Oct 5), Elle King (Oct 11), Tori Kelly (Oct 12), Tyler Hubbard (Nov 9) and Kes (Nov 30), and more.
Premium seating is available at every show and includes pre-show lounge access, reserved table seating in the balcony, and in-seat wait service. Members can pick from an exclusive menu with bites and handheld eats including sliders, tacos, cheesesteak eggrolls, plus top-shelf booze not available in the rest of the venue.
With all these VIP perks and exclusive access, don’t be surprised if people start wondering if you’re famous and you get photographed by the paparazzi.
Visit Live Nation’s Premium website for more information or contact Maryclaire Griffin at MaryclaireGriffin@LiveNation.com to turn going to a show into a premium experience.
