Cinema Success Calls for Sequel Last month, Cinema in the Park at Regatta Park, Emu Plains was given such rave reviews that it will be added to the Council’s event calendar again. Over 300 people attended the free showing of the family movie Madagascar 3. In addition to the screening of the movie there was face painting, a circus playground, jumping castle and Council’s play van. Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said there are plans to expand Cinema in the Park later this year. “There was such overwhelming support for more events like this from the families who attended,â€? Cr Fowler said. “Families brought picnic blankets and chairs to sit under the stars and enjoy what was an entertaining movie for all the family. It was a wonderful night that everyone enjoyed.â€? Council will hold two screenings in December in its “By the Riverâ€? series of events along the Nepean River. Catering for all age groups at the next screening, one movie will be family themed with the other for an older audience. ď śď€ The last Cinema in the Park was a very popular event drawing a crowd of over 300 people.

Can you believe we are almost half way through the year? I know it's cliché, but, where did the time go? As the year races by, we find ourselves in Term 2 of school; Easter has been and gone, with Mothers Day just around the corner. In the blink of an eye it will be the end of financial year and we'll be donning our winter woollies! This month, we have some amazing stories of new beginnings like little Liam's story on page 3, stories about the end of an era like that of Emu Heights Theatre Company on page 5 and stories about a time to reflect, with Lewers latest exhibition on page 9. With Mothers Day falling on the second Sunday in May, Narelle writes an insightful and very thought-provoking article about positive relationships on page 6. Well worth a read! Sometimes, the hardest thing and the right thing, are often the same. Enjoy your Community News.

Lions Clubs Work Together

ď ˛ď€ Emu Plains Lions Club President Ian West and Publicity Officer, Jim Devine gathered with representatives of Lions Clubs of Kings Langley, Castle Hill and Lugarno, together with Australian Lions Children's Mobility Foundation Director, Greg English presenting Liam Hawkins-McLean with his walker.

The Lions Clubs of Emu Plains, Kings Langley, Castle Hill and Lugarno together with the Australian Lions Children’s Mobility Foundation recently presented a ‘walker’ to pre-schooler, Liam Hawkins-McLean of Doonside. The ‘Mustang’ brand walker was made in Denmark. Liam who has cerebral palsy, had a ‘fitting’ at his home with his physiotherapist, Emma Riley from the Cerebral Palsy Alliance, GTK Rehab; the walker supplier, Greg English; the District Chairman of Australian Lions Children’s Mobility

Foundation and representatives from the four Lions Clubs, who were all present. Liam’s mother, Melinda, and grandfather, Ian were also present to oversee the ‘fitting’ and to thank all present for their wonderful contribution to Liam’s mobility and overall standard of life. The most satisfying benefit apart from seeing Liam mobile was his smile, when trying out his new ‘wheels’.

The Right Person For The Job Do you know someone you can rely upon? I’ve got a friend who is a builder. When I want something built, I always go to him. I know he’ll do it well, and that I’ll be happy with the result. There’s another thing too, it doesn’t matter that I don’t know the first thing about building, the quality of his work doesn’t depend on me. When it comes to us and God, Jesus teaches a similar thing. If you want to know God and His forgiveness over your life, it doesn’t matter how much faith you’ve got. What matters is where you place it. Jesus said that if we place our faith somewhere other than in Him and what He’s done, it’ll be a mistake. And perhaps the greatest danger we all face is to think that we can earn God’s forgiveness. But if instead we rely on Him for life, and for forgiveness it doesn’t matter that we’ve got nothing to contribute to it, what matters is His ability to get the job done. That’s a happy relief! If you need a builder, find one you can trust, if you need a saviour do the same. We don’t all need a builder, but the Bible says we all need forgiveness. If you want to check out whether Jesus matches up to his claims, why not read Mark or Luke’s gospel in a copy of the Bible. If you haven’t got one, get in contact and we’ll give you one. Rev Roger Cunningham

The founding stall holders have been at Vicarys Winery Craft Markets for many years. Due to the development of the Badgery's Creek Airport, the markets there have now closed and relocated to Emu Plains (most of the stall holders are long standing locals to the area so it only made sense to choose Emu Plains). Now called "Emu Markets" they will be located INSIDE the school hall at the Nepean Creative & Performing Arts High School, although there will also be some stalls on the grounds surrounding the hall. The Market is predominantly made up of stall holders that sell products that are generally not available in shops, with special emphasis on goods & crafts that have been made locally. The Vicarys Winery Craft Markets are held every second Sunday of the month. Hope to see you there!

Two Men Trapped in Single Vehicle Crash - Emu Plains Two people have been injured after being trapped in a single vehicle crash at Emu Plains last month. About 6.40pm (Thursday 16 April 2015), emergency services were called to Forbes Street after a Suzuki Baleno left the roadway and hit a tree. The engine of the car was on fire after the crash and extinguished prior to emergency services arrival. The two men in the vehicle were trapped before being freed by Fire & Rescue NSW officers. The driver was taken by road ambulance to Westmead Hospital and the front seat passenger, who was trapped for a longer period of time, was flown to Westmead Hospital by helicopter. Their conditions are unknown. Inquiries into the cause of the crash are continuing. Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page: https:// nsw.crimestoppers.com.au/ Information you provide will be treated in the strictest of confidence. Final Curtain Call For Emu Heights Theatre Company After four years and seven productions, Emu Heights Theatre Company bid one last farewell, with their final production of ‘The Shoe-Horn Sonata’ at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre in Penrith, earlier this month. “We were very proud to return to that production. It was the first play that we produced for Penrith and Western Sydney back in 2011. After bringing seven productions to the stage and to thousands of audience members with the Emu Heights Theatre Company, there was a warm sense of coming full circle in directing this valuable human story from a fresh perspective” said Ian Zammit, Artistic Director of the Emu Heights Theatre Company. In the year of the play’s 20th Anniversary and in the Centenary of the ANZAC, it was sobering that John Misto’s play carried a more-than-ever relevant commentary on the politics of war from those who suffer as a result of it. Audiences were left wanting more after watching these powerful performances and it was the perfect way to finish for the theatre company. “I was personally proud of the array of talented, generous arts professionals we brought together over the years to create these productions. The hard-working company members within this production, many of whom were from Western Sydney, have warmly returned time and again to work with the Emu Heights Theatre Company. It was the icing on the cake” said Mr Zammit. The Emu Leonay Gazette would like to thank the Emu Heights Theatre Company for their valuable contribution to the local community over the last four years and wish them all the best for the future.

PARENTS CORNER

Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) NepeanStudent-Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School, Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

Positive Parenting

Phil Nunn, an Australian psychologist, says that parenting is like having a rope around your waist. Parenting is all about knowing when to let the rope out and when to reel it in. I take this metaphor a little bit further. The rope around your waist is the relationship you have with your child. No rope = no relationship. Without a relationship there is no letting out and no reeling in. Your child is flailing about at the end of the rope without being hitched to something. That’s a dangerous and scary place for a child to be. In my experience most of these kids look angry. This anger masks hurt, all children want to feel connection and belonging with their primary caregivers. Without a strong and positive parent-child relationship, your child will not listen to you and will not do as you ask. It really is that simple. I believe that having a strong relationship with your child is the most important thing that you can do as a parent. I reckon that building relationship is about 80% of the parenting effort. So, if you are disciplining and punishing your children about 80% of the time, then think about taking an about-turn, and concentrate on relationship instead, and see how that changes things. So, how do you develop a positive relationship with your child? Hugs, touch, care, unconditional love, attention, spending time with them, descriptive praise, nurture, listening to them when they talk, are relationship builders. Things like put-downs, name calling, criticism, teasing, telling them that they are ‘bad’ or ‘naughty’, and swearing at your kids are relationship killers. If you don’t like being treated that way, don’t treat your kids that way. Lots of parents say to me, “I don’t have time to spend lots of time with my children”. Phooey! You’re already spending lots of time yelling at them, arguing with them, and punishing them. What about the chores? The washing-up police aren’t going to knock on your door any time soon. And here’s the best-kept secret to parenting – spending small amounts of time (a few minutes) regularly throughout the day is worth

more to your child than spending a half day per week. If you are not doing anything super-important, stop to listen to them or look at what they want to show you. Top up their emotional cup as often as you can. If you are reading this, and you think that your relationship is not that great with your kids, and they are angry at you, not listening to you, and not doing as you ask, then it is not too late. It’s never too late to build a relationship with your child. Dr Robyn Dolby also uses the rope metaphor to explain how parents relate to their children. She says that if your child is used to being out on the end of the rope most of the time, then you need to reel the rope IN very slowly. Some parents pull on the rope too hard, and the child pulls harder. That will lead to even more fights. Nope, just reel that rope in very, very slowly, and prove to your child that you can be trusted to be the parent they need you to be. The same can be said for children who have been kept too close and too controlled (over protected) or kids who experience anxiety. You need to let the rope OUT very slowly, so they don’t get scared. Relationship. It is essential to growing strong, resilient, healthy, and happy humans. Kids don’t need stuff, they need YOU. The relationship you have with your child is their first experience of love. They will take what you teach them into their friendships and their intimate relationships. What are you teaching them about love?

Pancakes For Mum!

Police are appealing for witnesses to a public-place shooting in Penrith last month. About 6.15pm (Sunday 19 April 2015), a number of shots were fired at a white Toyota Hilux in the car park of a shopping centre on Station Street. Police arrived a short time later and arrested a 24-yearold man inside the shopping centre. During a search of the man and his belongings, police seized a loaded 9mm pistol and additional ammunition, along with an amount of a white powder believed to be amphetamine. The man complained of chest pains and was taken to Nepean Hospital, where he remains under police guard. Following inquiries, police later attended a home in Kyre Crescent, Emu Plains. During an examination of a white Toyota Hilux at the residence, officers located what appeared to be a bullet mark on the bumper bar. Police from Penrith Local Area Command are continuing their investigations into the incident, which they believe has links to outlaw motorcycle gangs (OMCG). Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page: https://nsw. crimestoppers.com.au/ Information you provide will be treated in the strictest of confidence. Bereaved Mothers Day 2015 Mothers Day is a painful and challenging celebration for mums who’s child has died. This is made more unbearable by advertising and the media showing happy families with their children. So, in 2010 Anna Jarvis had the idea to celebrate bereaved mums, honouring her own mum who had 7 children die. This day falls on the first Sunday in May. Not all mums have a child to show for their motherhood, it’s an emotional time. Some women are confused about their status, “Can I call myself a mother? The answer is, “Yes you can! You carried this precious baby inside of you (it doesn’t matter if it was a short time or till term). So, if you or someone you know has had a baby die (before, during or after birth) here are some ideas to help you celebrate your motherhood. Acknowledgement What a bereaved mother wants most is acknowledgement that she is a mother. Celebrate her motherhood, wish her a “Happy Mother’s Day. Say her child’s name Hearing your baby’s name is magical. Take the time to talk about her child, look through pictures and let her tell you about her experience of her child. This helps keep the memory alive. In a strange way it assists you through grief because you realise that your child will never come back but will always live in your memory.

ď ˛ď€ Catherine O’Donnell, Dugout at 1st Division Headquarters, 2015, Charcoal on paper, Photo Adam Hollingworth.

The 100 year anniversary of the 25 April 1915 landing and commencement of battle at ANZAC Cove, Gallipoli, presents a very special opportunity for Australians to reflect upon its involvement in military conflict, and to give thanks for the sacrifice of the many Australians who have served their country this past century. The exhibition Home / Front is Penrith Regional Gallery & The Lewers Bequest’s contribution to this anniversary. Artist Catherine O’Donnell was commissioned to explore the individual human dimension to conflict, and to convey the means by which those who served maintained their humanity, sense of self, home, and humour throughout a bloody and senseless campaign. As a point of departure, Catherine O’Donnell explored the available historical record before travelling to Turkey in March and April of 2014. As the artist walked Gallipoli’s scarred earth she found the scattered relics of war - pieces of shrapnel, fragments of bone and barbed wire protruding from the earth, and everywhere trenches worn to gentle furrows - the detritus of the world’s first modern war. From her research and experience artist Catherine O’Donnell has produced a series of large scale monochromatic drawings which situate servicemen and nurses at rest, proximate to the temporary digs, trenches, bunkers and tents where these individuals lived, worked and fought for eight long months. Working from historical photographs as her reference, O’Donnell positions the subjects of her drawing in direct relation to the viewer. It is a gaze that is not easily averted. On show until 24 May.

MONEY MATTERS PARENTS CORNER With David & Leonie Jackson – Great Aussie Dream P: 4733 8592 E: admin@gad.com.au

Vegemite Sandwiches Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know that the property market is hot right now and the right home can be hard to come by. The tendency in this type of market is to get caught up in the fervour and over extend your finances. When purchasing property, level heads are required because paying more than you can afford for your dream home can be disastrous. First time buyers without the experience of living with a mortgage are particularly susceptible to this trap. Over the years I have developed what we jokingly call in the office my “vegemite sandwich talk during which I sit down with my clients, discuss their goals and objectives, work though the numbers to see what is affordable for them (not just what they can borrow), and put a plan in place to achieve them. And that’s where the vegemite sandwiches come in. You see, sometimes my clients may not be ready to purchase straight away and often don’t know how to fix that. Most of the time it comes down to savings; because saving money can be hard unless you have the right mindset and focus on your goal. Taking a vegemite sandwich to work instead of buying lunch will save you about $1,500 in six months. Skipping that Barista made coffee, another $600. Dinner at home rather than the Restaurant, $2,600. You get the idea. Regardless of the position my clients are in, I always recommend saving more and borrowing less; because for every $1 more you save is $3 less you have to repay. Think of it like this; it’s not a sacrifice but an investment. You’re not paying the price, you’re reaping the rewards. Who knew that vegemite sandwiches could be so valuable?
