FROM FROMTHE THEEDITOR EDITOR Well Winter has arrived. Time to pull out your winter woollies, rug up and keep warm as the aroma of fresh home-made soup wafts through the home. This month, our cover story details the latest release at Mulgoa Rise, while page 7 highlights the continued generosity of one of our local Small Business operators. It is without doubt that there is a strong sense of community in this special place we call home. Only last month I witnessed a resident ‘Paying It Forward’ at a local business. Something entirely unexpected by the recipient, but a true act of kindness. Not only did it warm the heart of the lucky recipient, but all those that witnessed this amazing gesture. Share your ‘Pay It Forward’ stories with us! Email: info@districtgazette. com.au This month we have ‘The Best Hot Chocolate’ in ‘What’s Cooking’ on page 10; it’s bound to keep the winter chills at bay. Remember, ‘The grass isn’t greener on the other side, it’s greener where you water it!’ Enjoy your Community News.

Hopewood Health Retreat has announced with great sadness that it will be closing its doors on 9 June 2015. Hopewood, one of Australia’s original retreats, has been an institution in the Wallacia region for almost 55 years and a leading voice in health, nutrition and natural living nationally. Throughout its history, the Australian Youth and Health Foundation has conducted Hopewood Health Retreat and the charity’s Board made the difficult decision to close the Retreat and Day Spa. Hopewood General Manager Sharon Beavon, who has worked at the Retreat for over a quarter of a century said today: “We are greatly saddened that this decision has had to be made, particularly for our incredibly dedicated, long serving and loyal staff. Our first priorities are to support our staff in their career progression, and to ensure Hopewood’s high standard of service continues for our guests, until closure. As the authentic voice of health and wellness, Hopewood will continue to share its philosophy at www.hopewood.com. au providing Australians with the information they need to live happier and healthier lives.

The Blood of the Martyrs As we begin the month of June the Church moves into “Ordinary Time” which means that the season of Easter is over, marked by the great feast of Pentecost which we celebrated towards the end of May. Though Easter has concluded we don’t lose heart or hope because we find throughout the coming months signs of encouragement to keep us strong in our Christian faith. An example of this greets us during the first week of June when we celebrate three feast days dedicated to Christian martyrs: St Justin (01 June), St Charles Lwanga and companions (03 June) and St Boniface (05 June). Each of these martyrs died in a different period of history: St Justin in the second century, Charles Lwanga and his companions in the nineteenth century, and St Boniface in the eighth century. The example given by these selfless people of faith is certainly a great boost to we people of faith, especially when that devotion starts to flag and become lukewarm. Martyrs are those people who willingly give their lives as a witness to their beliefs. Martyrdom is by no means restricted to Christians but obviously Christian martyrs are the focus of my reflections in this column. Perhaps the form of martyrdom which is most familiar to people, Christian and otherwise, is that which was perpetrated by the Romans in the first three centuries of the Christian Church, when many people who professed Christian faith were periodically slaughtered in public spectacles. St Justin is one example of this. He lived in the second century, being martyred in the year 165. Justin was a philosopher who became a Christian as an adult, as was customary at the time. He referred to Christianity as the “true philosophy”. He refused to deny his faith and worship the Roman gods, and so was beheaded along with some companions of his. A couple of his written works survive to this day. Roman persecution effectively ended in the early fourth century but this didn’t mean an end to martyrdom. St Boniface was an English monk who went to Germany as a missionary in
the year 719. He became a bishop there and had great success but was murdered, along with fifty-three companions, by some pagans in modern day Holland in the year 754. His body, along with the blood-stained book he was reading at the time of his murder, can still be viewed today in the town of Fulda, central Germany. When we move forward through history we see little or no letup of Christian persecution. Charles Lwanga, who was martyred in the year 1886, was one of many African martyrs who were killed in a great period of persecution in Uganda between 1885 and 1887. He was a servant in the king’s court and instructed other servants in the Christian faith. He tried to protect them from the king’s sexual advances. The king, in his anger and prejudice against the Christian faith, had Charles and dozens of others slowly burnt to death. We might think that martyrdom is a thing of the past but this is not so. In fact, it has been estimated that more Christians were martyred in the twentieth century than in the previous nineteen centuries combined. Of course, in recent times we have heard of huge numbers of Christians in the Middle East and in Nigeria being killed for their faith and vast numbers, fearing persecution, leaving their homelands to seek safety elsewhere. Martyrdom is by no means a historical curiosity, it is a present reality. We ask for the prayers of the martyrs, those recognised by the Church and those countless tens of thousands of other martyrs who are now dwelling in God’s eternal light. We pray for an end to persecution, that those who commit such atrocities will know a change of heart and instead promote love and peace, just like the one who gave his life for us, Jesus Christ. Our parish is a vibrant and active Christian community. If you would like to join us, particularly those who may not attend our Masses regularly and new residents in the area, we would love to welcome you here as part of our friendly, inclusive and familyoriented community. Looking forward to welcoming you! Blessings and prayers, Fr Robert Riedling, Parish Priest

Breastfeeding Group Donates Toys to Family-Friendly Cafe Local mums from the Australian Breastfeeding Association – Hawkesbury/Nepean group have rallied together to donate toys to Sapphire’s Café at the Glenmore Park Child and Family Centre. Cafe owner Jenna Vicary is a local resident who is very generous with her time and resources in supporting local customers and community groups, often hosting mother’s groups run by the Australian Breastfeeding Association. Jenna was touched to see so many mothers visit her Café on Monday 18th May with gifts for her. The local mum’s donated a toy box for of toys designed purely for the enjoyment of others. Jenna is usually the one giving so she enjoyed being on the receiving end for once. Jenna organised an Easter Egg hunt on Easter Saturday this year. But due to bad weather, it was a wash out. So she spent her day driving around in the torrential rain and donated them to Westmead Children’s and the children’s ward at Nepean Hospital. According to Nicole Bridges, volunteer breastfeeding counsellor with the group, ‘We run a lot of our local mum’s groups at Jenna’s cafe which is part of a wonderful community precinct built by Penrith City Council. There is an outdoor playground that is fenced in so it has become a bit of a community hub for local parents and kids, as it is somewhere safe, partially undercover and has a lovely cafe and toilets.’ ‘Jenna has always had a little corner of the cafe sectioned off for the babies and toddlers with toys, but over time they have slowly disappeared. To coincide with National Mothering Week this year, our local group has donated some toys to support Jenna and also raise awareness of the importance of supporting mums and providing community spaces that are baby, child and breastfeeding friendly.’ ‘We see far too often the negative effects for mums when they are told to stop breastfeeding in public or made to feel embarrassed. The theme for this year’s National Mothering Week was ‘Support, Encourage, Inspire’ and we felt this was a way our local group could “pay it forward” to Jenna and ultimately encourage more mums to get out and about in the community with their babies and young children,’ said Ms Bridges. So, next time you are at Sapphire’s take a moment to check out the toy box and to think about how it got there and, be thankful that we live in such an accepting and encouraging community.

Politics and Our Souls As I write the budget is in the news, and I am prompted to write about the well-being of our souls in a society that places economic prosperity at the centre of its universe. Now of course it is important to manage the nation’s finances well, and we should thank God for the material prosperity we enjoy in Australia. But when talking about the soul or heart, we must also talk about things like happiness, peace, and fulfilment. What are we achieving with our life that makes us feel that what we are doing is meaningful, and that we are not wasting it? Beyond our bank balance, are we making the world a better place for our children? We hear so much in the media now about economic indicators – from what the Reserve Bank is doing, to the profit figures for the major retailers, or our import/export earnings. It is as if our essential wellbeing depends upon our economic success. Again, our economic effectiveness allows a more affluent life than someone in a third world country experiences, but is it really the basis for our happiness, peace, or fulfilment? I suppose we can’t blame politicians for making economic prosperity top and centre because most people vote “from their hip pocket”. I have four young children and things can be tight, so I know what that’s about. Getting more money makes it easier to survive, but beyond a certain point it doesn’t make us a happier society. We enjoy high levels of wealth in Australia, but we also work our tails off for the privilege! More time earning means that we can afford better things but it also means less time for other valuable activities like being with those that we love.
Everyone is talking about how fast everything is going. We must do more, to earn more, so that we can be economically prosperous. But our bodies and minds just weren’t made to live at this sizzling pace, and as a society we are paying the price in stress-related illness, high divorce rates, road rage, and unacceptably high levels of mental illness. I wonder how many people are ready to snap. We must understand the trade-offs between economic prosperity and the welfare of our minds and souls. For example, more affordable childcare might well make it possible for us to work more, earn more, and consume more. But what is happening to our marriages, our families, our children, and our souls when our lives are so disconnected from each other? People who are dying live well because they are forced to see what matters. And none of the people I visit who are dying ever mention how much money they earned, or whether the national budget was in surplus or deficit. Some worry about whether their kids will ever afford a home, but they know that what really matters is not about any of the things about economic prosperity that clog up our national airwaves and political debates. They talk about relationships. They talk about TIME with people they love. They appreciate the power of being still so that they can capture what matters before it is too late, or they rush past it. They talk about things that they did, or wished they had done, that make the world better for those they love. They talk about whether they found their “calling” - whether their life was meaningful. They talk about God. Food for thought. Live well, Paul, Parish Priest.

‘Resilience’ is a Bit of a Buzz Word These Days We all want our kids to do well and to be well. One of the things that determines social and emotional wellbeing is “resilience”. Resilience is defined as the ability of an individual to access resources to prevent, minimise, or overcome hardship. The problem, I think, we have when talking about resilience is that we treat it as something separate to our parenting and teaching. We treat it as something separate that our children must learn, like they learn maths, or the rules of whichever sport they choose to play. It is treated as something that we do to, or for, our children. But really, resilience is learnt within environments through children feeling heard and feeling that they belong. Children learn coping skills in relationship with parents and teachers. They learn about feelings and how to manage them, from birth, in relationship with us. The most optimal environment is a positive one, in which parents and teachers regard themselves as guides and educators. There is no point learning how to apply resilience in environments that are harsh, punitive, or unyielding, and having caregivers that shame children on a regular basis. It’s like applying a band aid to a gaping wound. For this reason, I think that parenting programmes like Circle of Security and Triple P are better programmes for promoting resilience in our children that any resilience programme available for children. There has been a steady decline of resilience and mental health in young people over the past 3 decades. What I am increasingly finding in my work with children, is that they feel they cannot bring their struggles and problems to their parents. The message from parents to their children resoundingly is “build a bridge and get over it”, “stop being a drama queen/wuss/sook”, “suck it up princess”, or “man up”. Up to 90% of the children I work with feel they cannot talk to their parents, or when they do they are dismissed, rescued, punished, or ignored. The majority of Year 6 children I speak with, young people heading into high school and adolescence, feel their parents don’t listen to them. No wonder 1 in 4 of our young people will go on to develop clinical depression. In this ‘lucky’ country. Too sad. As an Aboriginal woman said to me many years ago, “you can’t be a strong tree, if you don’t have strong roots”. So how do our children grow strong roots? Australian psychologist, Andrew Fuller, cites the research and advises that those children who are most resilient have been found to have three factors in their life (https://vimeo.com/43821184): 1. Feeling love, connection, and belonging within their family; 2. Having a few friendship groups, so that if they fall out with one group they can align themselves with another group; 3. Having an adult outside the family that likes them. Parenting is the most important factor in children’s resilience. Children grow up in the context of family. I would like to see the resilience debate going forward as placing an emphasis on parents to learn positive parenting skills and providing an environment in which our children grow their resilience skills, rather than placing the onus on children to bear the responsibility for learning resilience skills. How are you creating an environment in which your children can grow strong roots?

Fish & Chips Capable Cooks • Time 1 hour 50 min • Serves 4
Ingredients • 1 Cup (150g) Plain Flour, Plus Extra to Dust • 1 1/3 Cups (330ml) Good-Quality Beer (Lager), Chilled • 4 Large Floury Potatoes (Such as King Edward, Russet), Peeled • 12 (About 50g Each) Flathead Fillets • Sunflower Oil, for Deep-Frying • Lemon Wedges & Tartare Sauce, to Serve
Method 1.
Place the flour, 1 teaspoon sea salt and some freshly cracked black pepper into a large bowl, and make a well in the centre. Slowly start pouring the beer into the well, whisking to combine, until all the beer is added and a smooth batter forms. Strain batter through a fine sieve to remove any small lumps of flour. Place in the fridge for 1 hour.
2.
Dry the potatoes with kitchen paper and cut lengthways into chips about 1cm-thick. Half fill a deep-fryer or large heavy-based saucepan with oil and heat to 160°C. (If you don't have a deep-fryer thermometer, test a cube of bread - it will turn golden in 30 seconds if the oil is hot enough.) Fry chips in batches for 5-7 minutes or until soft but still pale, then drain. The chips can be prepared to this stage ahead of time.

Preheat oven to 170°C. When you are ready to cook the fish, increase the temperature of the oil to 190°C (a cube of bread will turn golden in 15 seconds). Fry chips again, in batches, for a further 2-3 minutes or until crisp and golden. Drain on kitchen paper. Keep warm in the oven. Maintain the oil temperature at 190°C. Dust the flathead fillets in the extra flour. Dip into batter, one at a time, allowing excess to drain off. Carefully place into the hot oil. Depending on the size of your fryer, cook fish in batches. Fry for 3-4 minutes or until golden brown and crisp, then drain on kitchen paper. Remove chips from oven. Sprinkle fish and chips with salt. Serve with wedges of lemon and tartare sauce.

Students In Mulgoa Encouraged To Take On The Money Stuff Challenge
Tanya Davies MP, Member for Mulgoa has encouraged local high school students to get involved in the NSW Fair Trading Money Stuff Challenge. Tanya Davies said that students would have the opportunity to devise innovative messages about consumer rights, with the best entries in line for category prizes of $250 for individual students and $2,000 for schools. “The Money Stuff Challenge allows students in Years 8 to 10 to learn about consumer rights by developing educational material for their peers on issues such as eligibility for refunds and avoiding scams,” Tanya Davies said. “By tackling issues of relevance to young people such as signing mobile phone contracts, online shopping and buying your first car, the competition teaches students to become savvy consumers.
Minister responsible for Fair Trading Victor Dominello said the Money Stuff Challenge had been running for over 15 years and last year’s program saw over 1,000 NSW high school students involved. “The program encourages students to become subject experts in consumer law and to share those learning with fellow students in innovative ways,” Minister Dominello said. “Entries can include short movies, websites, magazines, radio plays and more and can be submitted online via the Money Stuff website.” The competition is run as an in-class assessment for students meeting the learning needs of the commerce syllabus. Information packs are being distributed to schools which contain a student guide outlining entry requirements and a teacher guide for running the classroom component of the competition. A gallery of past winners can be viewed at www. moneystuff.net.au. The $16,000 prize pool is spread across several categories, including regional and metropolitan and the People’s Choice Award category, which allows the public to have their say on the best student concepts. Postal entries close 24 July 2015 and online entries are due by 31 July 2015 with announcements of the winners expected in September. For more information please visit the Fair Trading website www. fairtrading.nsw.gov.au or phone 13 32 20.

Four Important Psychological Discoveries Every day of every year, scientists toil away in their efforts to understand the workings of the human mind. What makes us happy? How do our emotions work? What should we be doing differently in our lives to make ourselves healthier, happier and stronger? Each year, a few studies stand out as particularly helpful by outlining a clear path to accomplish a better and healthier life. Here are 4 studies that everyone should know about; Study 1: We look for happiness in all the wrong places: We typically think of major life events, raises, large purchases, and success as the main sources of happiness in our lives. But a Harvard University study by Zhang, et al., 2014 shows that we are overlooking a powerful and readily available font of happiness: the small things that happen from day to day. The Implication: Pay more attention to the small things that happen in your daily life. Small sources of joy are powerful. Study 2: The mind/body connection: In 2014, study after study has shown that mindful people are better off in a variety of different ways. In fact, higher emotional self-awareness has been found to improve your overall health. A Brown University Study by Loucks, et al., 2014 showed that people who are more aware of what they are thinking and feeling in the moment have lower BMI (body mass index), lower fasting glucose, less smoking and higher levels of physical activity. The Implication: We should all work on being more aware of what we are thinking and feeling in the moment, and why. Study 3: There is a simple way to fight your own negativity and anxiety: Negative, obsessive thinking is a common part of many emotional and psychological problems. A new study by Nota & Coles, 2014 offers an option to try if you would like to reduce your own negative thinking patterns. These researchers found a clear connection between going to bed late at night, inadequate sleep, and excessive negative thinking/worrying. More studies are planned, but in the meantime, it makes sense to try this relatively easy fix. The Implication: Try going to bed earlier and work toward getting 8 hours of sleep per night, and see if it helps reduce your negative, anxiety-driven thinking patterns. Study 4: People who treat themselves with compassion feel better about themselves and their bodies: A 2014 study by Kelly et al., 2014 found that women who treat themselves with more kindness and compassion are better able to cope with disappointments and setbacks in life. They were also less reactive to other people’s judgments or criticisms of their body shape and size. The Implication: If you are kind to yourself in the face of your own mistakes and flaws, you will be a stronger and more resilient person overall. In Summary…. • That you will take joy from the small things in your daily life. • That you will be aware of what you are feeling in the moment. • That you will take care of yourself by getting enough sleep. • That you will treat yourself with the same kindness and compassion that you offer others.

Chronic Hip Pain Many people have chronic hip pain. Serious hip injuries involving major trauma such as bone breaks require medical interventions e.g. surgery and rehab. But many people still have ongoing hip pain after surgery & rehab. Hip pain can also arise as referred pain from simple back issues, from inflammation & tightness following overuse or excess body-weight; from chronic inflammation e.g. rheumatoid & osteoarthritis, and as a side effect of chronic infection (e.g. Lyme disease). Regardless of the cause, chronic hip pain can make it difficult to walk, stop you working, playing, and doing many of the things you love. Many people become frustrated because they can’t resolve the pain even on strong medications. As with any chronic pain, hip pain is frequently due, simply to unresolved inflammation. Often the key to resolving hip pain lies in finding the cause & breaking the cycle if inflammation naturally. Depending on individual circumstances, dry needling, muscle elongation therapy, specific stretching and in some cases dietary change can be used to great effect. These begin to: 1. Address the causes of inflammation 2. Remove the inflammatory build-up in tissues & 3. Free up muscles & connective tissues in and around the hip. Often, when the causes have been properly addressed, pain lessens considerably and in some cases disappears altogether. Importantly, as pain levels go down, those on antiinflammatory drugs should not discontinue their medications abruptly. Rather, carefully controlled reduction in dose is required to avoid rebound reactions.

7 Ways To Burn More Fat! Ready to burn your way to a leaner you? Dropping fat tends to be a tedious process that’s slow and steady. There are, however, 7 ways to add an extra boost to your results. Keep reading to find out how... Boost Your Burn #1: Track Everything Counting calories, weighing out food portions, and keeping tabs on how far and fast you run isn’t the most exciting thing to do. But if you want to burn more fat, you need to do it. Without tracking your intake and outtake, you will never be able to figure out the weaknesses in your fat-burning program. Once you grow accustomed to keeping track, it becomes very rewarding when you have a good day. And since you live in the 21st century, tracking the amount of fat you consume and burn is made easier thanks to all sorts of electronic devices and apps. So make use of those that make the most sense to you and stay on top of your fat-burning game. Boost Your Burn #2: Power Up with Protein Every time you eat a meal, toss some protein in for good measure. Whether you go with lean chicken or beef, beans or lentil, or Greek yogurt, plugging protein into every meal helps your body stay full and fuelled. When you keep protein in your system, it’s much easier to say no to whatever unhealthy temptation comes your way. Boost Your Burn #3: Eat and Work Out You don’t want to gorge yourself on everything you can shove in your mouth before working out, but eating a bit beforehand can work wonders. With a protein-rich snack 90 minutes prior to working out, you’ll find yourself to be more focused and better able to push your body harder and longer than usual, leading to faster fat burning success. Boost Your Burn #4: Forget Your Weight This may seem contrary to burning fat, but if you really want to turn up your body’s fat-burning potential, you’re going to need to ignore what the scale says. When the goal is burning fat and toning up, you’re going to want to add muscle, which weighs more than fat. Boost Your Burn #5: Get Weighty Since you read the last tip, you probably saw this one coming. If you want to burn more fat off your body, you need to hit the weights. That doesn’t mean you have to become a professional body builder or push yourself until you can bench press a small car. What it does mean is that you need to include weights and strength training in your routine a few days a week. If you’re new to lifting weights, reach out to me and I’ll assess your goals and get you on a program that’s just right for you. Boost Your Burn #6: Go Green It may seem like magic, but green tea is rumoured to aid in fat burning. Actually, the connection between drinking green tea and burning more calories is well documented in research. Boost Your Burn #7: Change It Up Been eating the same stuff and doing the same workout routine for a few months? Not seen any fat melt from your love handles lately? Then your body may be asking for some variety. Changing up your exercise routine on occasion will work your body in new ways, forcing it to respond with extra fat burn. So if your fat loss has plateaued, variety will get the burn heated up once again. Bonus Tip! Want one more fat-burning method to get your body sleek and slim? Here it is: stop drinking fattening, sugary drinks! Whether your weakness is flavoured coffee with all the goodies, sweet tea, or beer, these drinks pile useless calories onto your body, forcing you to have to work even harder to burn fat. Avoid this dilemma by going with water. Remember that the most effective fat burn comes as the result of a consistent and challenging exercise program. Call or email today to get started on an exercise program that will change your shape forever!

New Release Of Prestige Home Sites Over 750 M2 In Mulgoa Rise Mulgoa Rise will comprise more than 600 homes when complete. Nestled at the foothills of the Blue Mountains, Mulgoa Rise has its own sporting fields and parks on the estate, with golf courses, lakes and rivers located nearby. This, together with walkways connecting the estate to Mulgoa Nature Reserve, will appeal to families looking to enjoy a healthy, outdoor lifestyle. Close to the Blue Mountains and mostly bordered by national park, reserves and bushland, Mulgoa Rise will provide the perfect environment in which to raise a family, offering all the benefits of a contemporary country village lifestyle with town convenience. With proposed neighbourhood shops and proposed school adjacent to the estate, Mulgoa Rise is also just minutes away from Glenmore Park shopping centre, and a 10 minute drive to Westfield Penrith Plaza shopping centre with its abundance of restaurants, cafes, shopping and entertainment. The nearest train station, with direct links to the city, is a short 10 minute drive away. There is also a good selection of kindergartens, preschool and childcare centres, as well as public and private schools located nearby. Mulgoa Rise is being developed by Mulpha Norwest, developers of the international award-winning Norwest Business Park; the highly acclaimed Bella Vista Waters residential estate; Sanctuary Cove on the Gold Coast; Hayman Island and the Intercontinental Hotel. For further information on the new release of home sites at Mulgoa Rise, contact Jeff Webb on 1300 272 300 or 0410 438 038 or visit www.mulgoarise.com.au. The Sales Office on Bradley Street is now open Thursday to Monday from 10am to 4pm.
