Mr Softy, Just Like The Good Ole’ Days! Tahlia and Bailey (19) are the proud owners of the old fashioned Ice Cream Truck that is currently visiting the streets of Glenmore Park. Local owner Bailey, has worked as the ice cream man on the weekends since the age of 10 and absolutely fell in love with it. He had always spoken about owning his own Ice Cream Truck one day and now that dream is finally a reality. With both owners Tahlia and Bailey only being 19 years of age, they are currently in a partnership with Tahlia’s parents who are happy to support the business and make their dream come true. With Tahlia working as a full time Graphic Designer and Bailey as an Auto Electrician, Mr Softy allows them to relax on the weekends and spend time together doing something they both enjoy and the local residents of Glenmore Park are not complaining. Mr Softy has received a great amount of support from local Glenmore Park residents asking Tahlia and Bailey to come back to their street every weekend. Residents have even begun writing their street names down for the pair to ensure they remember to come back. Mr Softy owners Tahlia and Bailey. Image supplied.

2016 Mulgoa Woman Of The Year Announced
ď ˛ď€ Tanya Davies MP with 2016 Mulgoa Woman of the Year, Sharon Chamberlin
Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies MP, recently announced that Sharon Chamberlin has been named the 2016 Mulgoa Woman of the Year. “The Local Woman of the Year Award recognises women who have made notable and outstanding contributions to their communities, accomplishing positive outcomes for the local area, Tanya Davies said. “In particular, recipients of the Award need to demonstrate ongoing dedication in serving the community, deserving recognition for their achievements, said Tanya Davies. Ms Chamberlin has been recognised, most notably, for the instrumental role that she played in the establishment of Junior Jivers, a musical activities playgroup run by Glenmore Park
Anglican Church, aimed at supporting mothers with young children. “Sharon voluntarily devotes her time to working with the mothers and children that are in the Junior Jivers program, often dedicating more than 30 hours per week, to ensure that all feel welcomed and included, as part of her caring and friendly disposition, Tanya Davies said. The Award was presented to Ms Chamberlin at Glenmore Park Anglican Church, while she was talking with mothers and children participating in Junior Jivers. “Unsurprisingly to anybody that knows Sharon, she is not one for ceremonial niceties or unnecessary flair. Instead of holding a formal presentation, Sharon was more concerned about serving at Junior Jivers, emblematic of the community-minded person that she is, said Tanya Davies. Tanya Davies was jubilant in her praise for the work ethic and dedication that has been exhibited by Sharon Chamberlin. “Sharon Chamberlin is an example for all of us to follow in selflessly supporting others and in advancing the interests of the Mulgoa community and its people, said Tanya Davies. More to Life Jesus is an extraordinary person of history. You might not realise but so much of what Jesus said and taught is today a normal, accepted way of thinking and living. Jesus revolutionised our world. Jesus started something, that today, so many of us simply take for granted. Prior to the coming of Jesus, human life was cheap. Compassion was a virtually unknown quality, but Jesus taught that all people have value and that all of life is to be cherished. For example, the saying, “Do to others as you would have them do to you” is the words of Jesus from the Bible’s New Testament book of Matthew. Likewise, in Jesus’ day, children were of no significance but again Jesus taught and demonstrated that children are valuable and precious. Jesus cared for the aged and for women. He was passionate about justice and concerned for the poor and the less privileged. But it is even bigger! Jesus taught that there is more to life; that there is more to life than what we see around us. Jesus taught his followers to value the things that will take us into eternity, rather than to hold onto the things that are here today and gone tomorrow. As we look back at history, considering the last 2000 years we see how what Jesus started transformed the lives of millions of people.
4 March 2016 www.glenmoregazette.com.au
And here’s the thing, Jesus today, continues to transform the lives of people. Jesus started something that continues to give life meaning and purpose and direction. Jesus started something that gives lasting peace and joy and satisfaction to life. At Glenmore Park Anglican Church, especially at Easter (see our advertisement on this page) we would love to share with you this wonderful transforming good news of Jesus, so you too can come to know that there is “More to Life!” Want to find out more? Give me a call on 4733 1635. Rev John Lavender

Great Results for Local Athletes The NSW Youth and Junior Athletics championships were held last month at the Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre. The athletes were excited to be competing at the newly renovated venue and good performances were expected. Glenmore Park residents Shane and Shannon Munaweera truly shone! Shannon competed in the Under 18 Women Hammer Throw. With a mighty effort of 39.51m. She won the Bronze medal. She was just short of her competition personal best distance and tantalisingly close to the magic 40m. With an outstanding leap of 6.41m, Shane won the Silver Medal in the Under 17 Boys Long Jump. As a result of these performances, both Shannon and Shane have qualified to represent NSW at the Australian Junior Athletics Championships, which will be held in Perth in March 2016. Representing local Little Athletics Centre Jamison, the siblings competed at the Regional Championships. Shannon competed at her last Little Athletics competition after 12 years of competing. Shane also competed at the Little Athletics Region 6 Championships last month, in the Under 15 Boys representing Jamison Little Athletics Centre. He won Gold in Long Jump, Discus and 100m Hurdles, Silver in 100m and Bronze in 200m. Shane broke the Region Long Jump, 100m Hurdles and 200m records, following up his effort of another record at the zone championships in December 2015. Good Luck to Shannon and Shane in Perth at the Australian Youth and Junior Championships. Shane Munaweera and Shannon Munaweera. Image supplied.

Surviving Failure This month’s topic might not be for everyone, but then again, if you are alive failure of some sort touches us eventually. Recently I was involved in supporting a man charged with a very serious offense under Australian law. He was innocent, but circumstances conspired against him and he faced the real prospect of living out the rest of his life in jail. As the court case unfolded it struck me how much the legal system in our country is designed to protect the innocent – a jury of twelve people must unanimously agree before a guilty verdict can be given. My friend was acquitted and justice prevailed. I was left with a sense of hope. My friend had been foolish for sure, and he paid for it with almost 2 years in prison while waiting for his trial. But he was not guilty of the crime and today enjoys the freedom and soul-rest afforded the innocent. But what if our failure (big or small) leaves us with a shattered soul, plagued with guilt, shame or regret? What if we BLEW IT… in an important relationship, with our kids, or morally? What if we blew a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity? If we applied the legal system, it rightly works to protect the innocent and punish the guilty. But this doesn’t help us if we actually blew it.
The Bible teaches that God loves us deeply and without compromise – like a father loves his children – even when we have blown it! Yes, really. In God’s eyes our acceptance and worth is NOT contingent upon whether or not we have failed. Our failure may have consequences for our lives, and God will call us to make changes, but he remains for us 110 percent. The legal system wonderfully works for the innocent, but when we have failed, it is the realisation deep inside that God loves us anyway that will bring us freedom. Students Bring Smiles to Cambodian Children
Penrith Anglican College students are all smiles! Image supplied.
In January this year a group of 24 Year 10 students and six teachers from Penrith Anglican College travelled to Cambodia as part the College’s annual service program, bringing smiles to children affected by HIV. The group visited the HOPE for Cambodian Children Foundation centre located in Battambang. Here they spent their time helping and serving the centre in a number of different ways. Students painted fences, refurbished a playground and spent time with the children, joining them in craft and sporting activities.
Penrith Anglican College has been visiting the centre each year over the past four years, forming a strong ongoing partnership with them. HOPE for Cambodian Children Foundation is a nongovernment organisation helping children affected by the HIV pandemic in Cambodia. The centre at Battambang provides assistance to local children and mothers through an Early Learning Centre, teaching English to children. The social work team also run a program called Mothers to Babies, which provides formula to mothers who are HIV positive so they don’t pass on the virus to their newborn. The social work team also provide financial and emotional support to the children who have been integrated back into the community with extended family. As part of this ongoing partnership with the Centre, Penrith Anglican College has also helped by donating equipment, such as a computer and printer, chairs for the primary school playground, books and craft supplies. These have been made possible through the fundraising efforts of the students leading up to the service trip. The trip has had a lasting effect on all the students. “Working with the Hope Centre was a privilege” said Rachel Davison, “even though the work in the extreme humidity was tough it was all worth it to see the joy and gratitude on the kids faces as we worked.” This joy that the children had, despite their circumstances, deeply affected all of the Penrith Anglican students. “What impacted me most was how happy the children are with nothing,” said Zalia Lackey, “and seeing how much they want to go to school which is something we take for granted.”

Penrith Christian School students in Years 8, 9 and 10 were immersed in crime scene investigation last month. Education Interactive ran an exciting hands-on program, giving students the chance to explore the fascinating world of Forensic Science by becoming investigators and solving a crime. “This was way better than watching it on TV! said one student, “We got to see how it really happens. Students investigated the case of a school girl found dead in a Sydney national park, their goal to work out how she got there and why she died. The case highlighted for the students the importance of cyber safety and the risks of drink spiking in everyday situations. The interactive sessions provided students with the opportunity to sift through evidence, such as fingerprints, digital microscopy, toxicology, DNA profiling, autopsy, fibres and much more. “This workshop was such a great way for students to really understand the science behind investigations, said Science teacher Denise Bailey. “Rather than watching it from afar, they were involved in the investigation, relying on their scientific skills to solve the case.

Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community + Neighbourhood Services P: 0409 986121 or 47218520 E: narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au FaceBook: Parenting in Penrith Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com When parents give their children negative emotional messages that focus on who the child is rather than his or her behaviour, they unwittingly dig a pit of shame so deep and so wide, it may take the child a lifetime to climb out of it. “You do it deliberately to annoy me” “I’m going to ring grandma to tell her how awful you are” “You are as stupid as your father” “Go ahead and try it, you’ll just fail like you always do” “Why are you so clumsy?” “I’m so angry with you I can’t stand the sight of you” Negative and emotional messages that attack a child’s sense of self and what she can do, leave their mark and can lead to mental health problems into adolescence and adulthood. When parents approach a child’s mistaken behaviour at the level of the behaviour, they say things like… “I’m really disappointed that you kicked the ball at the laundry window, especially as I warned you about it five minutes ago.” “What might have been a better choice?” “When you and your brother argue, I feel so frustrated.” A little bit of guilt is healthy and adaptive. Children learn what is acceptable behaviour when parents focus on communicating what they didn’t like about the behaviour and how the child might do better next time. Prolonged ranting, raving, lecturing, and anger cause excessive guilt which induces shame. One of my colleagues saw an interaction between a parent and a child the other day. The mother screamed at him “how many times do I have to tell you not to do that” and she walked away from him. The little boy, no older than 3, put his head down and banged his head with both fists. He then went and sat behind a park bench and cried. Was he feeling shame or guilt do you think? Is he learning that he can’t rely on the adults in his life to help organise his thoughts and feelings, and more importantly his behaviours?

Mr Softy, Just Like The Good Ole’ Days! Local residents are overjoyed to see Mr Softy take to the streets as many of them have commented saying they have not seen a Whippy Van in over 20 years! Many have thanked Tahlia and Bailey; as parents they are “happy that their kids can grow up with same memories they had in their local neighbourhoods.” With Mr Softy being the first to kick things off, both Tahlia and Bailey have a large vision for the future. Pars Defect Pain – Rest is Not the Only Answer The ‘pars interarticularis’ (part of the vertebral arch) is one of two (left or right) bony bridges that connect the upper with the lower facet joints in a vertebra. A pars defect (spondylolysis) is a break or weakness (see diagram) in one or both of these bridges. It can be due to: 1. A congenital abnormality (present at birth) called an ‘attenuated pars’, or 2. A stress fracture. The main vertebrae affected are L5 (85 - 95%), and L4 (5 – 15%), but rarely higher lumbar vertebrae. It can be diagnosed by plain X-ray, CT or MRI. 50 - 81% of people with spondylolysis end up with the bilateral fractures of the pars interarticularis, resulting in forward slippage (spondylolisthesis) of the vertebra. Most pars defects are asymptomatic, but some present as lower back pain. Typically when the patient stands on one leg and leans backwards, pain results. When the defect is on one side only, standing on the opposite leg elicits the pain (Syrmou 2010). Pain typically gets worse with sports and better with rest (Harris nd) About 6% of the general population have a pars defect (Syrmou 2010). However the injury is more common in adolescents participating in high risk sports (gymnastics, diving, weight lifting, wrestling, rowing, figure skating, dancing, volleyball, soccer, tennis). Up to 30.4% experience lower back pain (Malanga 2015) often due to a pars defect (McTimoney & Micheli 2003). No optimal treatment plan exists in the literature, pain relief medications may be used but nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) should be avoided as they slow down the bone
growth and healing (Syrmou 2010). Some authors (Harris nd) state that ‘only rest’ can heal a pars defect, with acupuncture and massage having no benefit. This is incorrect. Rest is vital, however stiff lower back muscles increase the forces on the vertebrae to which they are attached and so the likelihood of re-injury. Inflammation reduces the ability of tissue to heal. Muscle elongation therapy uses both dry needling techniques and specific muscle elongation techniques to address both these issues, and (along with rest) helps many cases of long standing back pain associated with pars defects to heal very nicely. If you have unresolved pars-defect related back pain, why not come talk to us at BHW - see our ad for contact details.
Letter to the Editor Do you know about what is happening with Glenmore Park shops and when they are going to finally extend and do them up? It’s been in the works for years and there has still been no answer for it. What shops are supposed to go up there?? We desperately need a gym and more variety of shops up there. The Value of Advice In 2015 for the first time ever Mortgage Brokers originated 50% of all new Home Loans. Since that time this figure has continued to grow to over 60%. So why have Mortgage Brokers grown in popularity to the point that they’re beating the Banks at their own game? It is true that Mortgage Brokers are required to have minimum education levels and are required to maintain their knowledge every year whereas Bank employees have no minimum standards. It is also true that Mortgage Brokers have access to hundreds of home loans with different features and different approval criteria and can quickly and easily compare them to find you the right loan at a great interest rate. It is also a little known fact that top tier Mortgage Brokers have access exclusive “Better than the Branch” pricing, priority loan processing and the ability to order property valuations prior to loan submission. Something else the Banks can’t do. All great reasons to use a Mortgage Broker but I think the real reason Mortgage Brokers are so popular comes down to one word. Advice. You see Mortgage Brokers works for you. Unlike banks they don’t try to shoehorn you into one of 4 or 5 products, instead they use their skill and knowledge to structure your finances in a manner that suits you. Choosing the right home loan is more than finding the lowest rate. It’s about finding the right Home Loan that matches your current needs, your lifestyle, your financial habits and your future goals. You’re not just looking for a Home Loan, you’re looking for a financial partner who can advise you all the way through your financial life. At Great Aussie Dream we pride ourselves on our knowledge and skill and over the 13 years we’ve been in business we have had the privilege of building many partnerships with our clients and have enjoyed being a part of their journey. If you would like a financial partner to help you buy your first home or your next home; your first investment property or your tenth, we would love to be a part of your journey too.

Happy Easter! Chocolate Dangers at Easter Time We all know Easter is a fun time spent with family and chocolate... lots and lots of delicious chocolate! Easter is a great time for the human members of the family, but the infamous Easter egg hunt can end in tragedy for our four legged friends. Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which when ingested by a dog or cat, causes vomiting, diarrhoea, hyperactivity, increased heart rate, restlessness, muscle twitching, increased urination, excessive panting and if left untreated can be rapidly fatal. If your dog does accidentally eat some chocolate it is vitally important that they are seen within 30 minutes to an hour by your local veterinarian. The veterinarian will give an injection to make your pet vomit, which removes most of the toxins from the body. Sometimes, your pet will be hospitalised, where intravenous fluids may be used, an enema or stomach pump may be required, and we may also need to use muscles relaxants and activated charcoal. There are a few simple precautions you can take to ensure that your pet has a safe Easter: • Hide your Easter eggs in areas which cannot be accessed by your pet. • Ensure small children do not give your pet any chocolate. • Ensure all chocolate is kept out of reach from your pets.
Dogs have a good sense of smell and will find chocolate in kid’s schoolbags! • Distract your pet with their favourite treats while chocolate is around. Colouring In Competition In the spirit of Easter what better way to brighten up the veterinary hospital, than to host a colouring in competition. All entries will be displayed on the walls of the veterinary hospital. You can download the entry form from our website www. orchardhillsvet.com.au, Facebook page or pop into the veterinary hospital and pick up a copy. Post your entries to Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, 377 Wentworth Road, Orchard Hills, NSW 2748, or drop them in at the veterinary hospital. All entries must be received by 9am on Tuesday 29th March 2016. Please ensure your full contact details (name, address, phone number, email) are on the back of the entry form or envelope. Winners will be drawn and notified at 10am on Tuesday 29th March 2016. Check out our website for more information. www. orchardhillsvet.com.au or join us on Facebook. We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team.
