Artisan Markets – Shop Local This Mothers Day The Creative Fringe, owned by local Glenmore Park resident, Debbie O’Connor will be the venue for Penrith’s first indoor artisan market. “Through The Creative Fringe we run the SIIP Program (Supporting Innovation and Ideas in Penrith). Our current participant, Katrina James has established thewesties.com.au website that tells positive stories of people and places in Western Sydney,” said Mrs O’Connor. As a spin off from this, Ms James realised that Penrith is lacking an artisan market where you can buy quality products, delicious produce and great coffee. So, The Westies Fringe markets were born! On offer are a range of products and goods produced by many locals including Glenmore Park residents; Kylie Nargar from Mrs Nargar & Co who make and sell hand poured soy candles and home wares, Meredith Clegg from Yum! Artisan Creations who bakes gluten free, dairy free, refined sugar free delights that are absolutely delicious! Last but not least is Kristi-Lee Murray from Poochie Bake who makes the healthiest treats for your best four legged friends. This is a fantastic opportunity to meet up with friends, grab mum a special something, or indulge yourself. Come along to The Westies Event Details: Saturday 9 May, 8am–1pm Fringe Market on Saturday 9 May – the day before Mothers Day and The Creative Fringe, Unit 6, 51 York Rd, Jamisontown (Penrith), NSW. support local. Latest Crime Statistics in Mulgoa Electorate Tanya Davies MP, Member for Mulgoa, said her electorate of Mulgoa was faring well in the fight against crime, with the latest Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOCSAR) data painting a positive picture for the region. “My electorate of Mulgoa is following state-wide trends, with most major crimes and offences remaining stable or fallingâ€? said Tanya Davies. BOCSAR reports some of the most serious offences have remained stable, while some are falling. ALL 17 major crime categories across the Mulgoa electorate have either remained stable or are trending down in the two years to December 2014. • Break and enter dwelling is down 28.6% (Fairfield City LGA) • Steal from retail store is down 33.5% (Fairfield City LGA) • Malicious Damage to Property is down 9.2% (Fairfield City LGA) • Malicious Damage to Property is down 15.4% (Penrith City LGA) • Steal from a person is down 26.3% (Penrith City LGA) NONE of the 17 categories has seen an upward trend. “This is great news for our communityâ€? said Tanya Davies. “The NSW Liberals & Nationals Government has worked hard to deliver extra police officers and resources as well as strengthen police powers to combat crime and this has been reflected in the crime data. “Community members can assist police in the fight against crime by reporting incidents when they occur and remaining vigilant. “I thank our local police officers for their hard work – these overwhelmingly positive statistics are testament to their efforts and success.â€? Farewell to Mr & Mrs Glenmore Park Sunday 12th April saw the end of an era as “Mr & Mrs Glenmore Park,” Graham and Michelle Rowling, sadly, left their home of 25 years in Rainbow Close, Glenmore Park, to make the big move to the Bathurst region. Graham and Michelle have not only been a landmark in the suburb of Glenmore Park, being the second residents to move into what was the new development that occurred way back in 1990, but they have also been a key part of Glenmore Park Anglican Church (GPAC). Sometime after they moved into Glenmore Park, Graham and Michelle accepted an invitation to attend the very first Church Service at Glenmore Park Anglican Church. Graham and Michelle said that it was as they came along each Sunday, they came to know Jesus and put their trust in Him and that He has had such a huge impact on their lives ever since. At their farewell and last Church service on Sunday morning, April 12, Graham spoke of the difference that knowing Jesus has made to their lives. In particular, he recalled the words of Jesus from our Easter Sunday Bible reading, as a grieving Mary Magdalene, arrived at the Jesus’ empty tomb. With her eyes full of tears, she turned to who she thought was the gardener, only to discover it was Jesus, saying to her, “Why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?” Graham reflected that our world is looking for so many things, but sadly, they do not understand that when you have found Jesus, he will meet our every need. For Graham and Michelle, it has been this knowledge of Jesus, which has shaped
their attitude of service to the community of Glenmore Park. They were key in founding the Glenmore Park Soccer Club and the Glenmore Park Residents Association. They have been in involved in Glenmore Park in so many ways including to help kick off ‘The Community Carols in the Park” and the Glenmore Park “Fiesta”. In their involvement at GPAC, Graham and Michelle have been models of service, involved in many ways, getting alongside and supporting others and making a significant impact to the growth and the life of our church. I have known Graham and Michelle since our family arrived at GPAC in December 1996, and it has been a real joy to know them and be in partnership with them as they have worked to grow the community and Church in Glenmore Park. Our prayers and thanks go with them as they take this next big step in their lives. We would love you get to know Jesus too, and would love to invite you to come to Church here at GPAC and check Jesus out for yourselves and see that He is all that you are looking for – just as Graham and Michelle did many years ago. Fire & Rescue NSW (FRNSW) holds its annual Open Day with fire stations across the State to give visitors a personal glimpse into Australia’s busiest fire and rescue service. Open Day coincides with the launch of FRNSW’s Winter Fire Safety Campaign. More than 80,000 people attend Open Day at their local station. Open Day includes safety demonstrations, fire station tours and the chance to inspect firefighting equipment and trucks used by our firefighters when responding to fires and other emergencies. There is also an array of activities for kids.
Visitors can also speak to firefighters first-hand about fire safety in the home, including how to install and maintain smoke alarms and how to develop a home escape plan to ensure they can quickly and safely escape a fire. With winter fast approaching and research showing fire deaths peak in the winter months, Open Day is the perfect opportunity to visit your local fire station and learn first-hand how you can protect your family, home and contents and minimise the risk of a home fire. Soul Matters: A Gardening Guide to Finding God If you feel a bit inwardly stuck or stale – because you are tired or have been hurt in some way, or because it is a struggle engaging in a real spiritual journey, let me offer some encouragement. While speaking with my dad recently about his vegetable garden something struck me that applies to the issue of growing inwardly and finding God. Dad had been beavering away planting seeds and seedlings for the different vegetables he wanted to grow in the Winter. On the phone he was saying, “I have this in, and that in”, as if his harvest was already in the bag! Dad might fail to protect his plants from pests or storms, but he understands that he isn’t even in the game until he literally plants something in the soil. But once he has planted, his expectation of a harvest is well founded because by God’s design plants grow in soil and eventually bear a crop. Jesus taught, “Here is another illustration of what the kingdom of God is like: A farmer planted seeds in a field, and then he went on with his other activities. As the days went by, the seeds sprouted and grew without the farmer’s help, because the earth produces crops on its own. First a leaf blade pushes through, then the heads of wheat are formed, and finally the grain ripens. And as soon as the grain is ready, the farmer comes and harvests it with a sickle.”(Mark 4:26-29) The point for our inward life is that when we plant seeds of truth and love in our hearts and lives, God does the work to produce a crop in us. We find such seeds in the teaching of Jesus, and plant them when we respond to his words. His Spirit then ploughs and turns the earth of our lives to bring us healing, freedom, peace and growth. We simply

plant the seed in faith, and when we do our expectation of an eventual crop is well founded because God then grows it in secret and brings the harvest. For example when we forgive as Jesus taught, it opens the way for God to heal us inwardly and to bless us again with happiness. When we focus ourselves inwardly on God through practices like prayer or silence, God is able to reveal himself and talk with us. Now tomatoes take a certain time from planting to fruit and broccoli takes a bit longer, but if the seed is in the soil over time, the fruit will eventually come. In the same way, ingrained attitudes of pride or un-forgiveness that keep us from being liberated by God’s love take a certain amount of time to overcome, as does gritty self-sufficiency, and the hurts or losses we experience in life. But if we are planting the seed of Christ’s words by applying them practically to our lives, our expectation of an eventual harvest is well founded. Until a few days ago I had nothing in the soil. I have scrambled to get the seeds and seedlings for the plants I want to grow and now “I have this in, and that in” - and, given even basic care for the plants, my expectation of a harvest is well founded. We can’t determine what, how or when God works, but if we are intentionally and consistently “planting” and bringing our hearts into play with God our expectation that he will be at work in and through our lives is well founded. PARENTS CORNER
Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Student-Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School, Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com
Positive Parenting
Phil Nunn, an Australian psychologist, says that parenting is like having a rope around your waist. Parenting is all about knowing when to let the rope out and when to reel it in. I take this metaphor a little bit further. The rope around your waist is the relationship you have with your child. No rope = no relationship. Without a relationship there is no letting out and no reeling in. Your child is flailing about at the end of the rope without being hitched to something. That’s a dangerous and scary place for a child to be. In my experience most of these kids look angry. This anger masks hurt, all children want to feel connection and belonging with their primary caregivers. Without a strong and positive parent-child relationship, your child will not listen to you and will not do as you ask. It really is that simple. I believe that having a strong relationship with your child is the most important thing that you can do as a parent. I reckon that building relationship is about 80% of the parenting effort. So, if you are disciplining and punishing your children about 80% of the time, then think about taking an about-turn, and concentrate on relationship instead, and see how that changes things. So, how do you develop a positive relationship with your child? Hugs, touch, care, unconditional love, attention, spending time with them, descriptive praise, nurture, listening to them when they talk, are relationship builders. Things like put-downs, name calling, criticism, teasing, telling them that they are ‘bad’ or ‘naughty’, and swearing at your kids are relationship killers. If you don’t like being treated that way, don’t treat your kids that way. Lots of parents say to me, “I don’t have time to spend lots of time with my children”. Phooey! You’re already spending lots of time yelling at them, arguing with them, and punishing them. What about the chores? The washing-up police aren’t going to knock on your door any time soon. And here’s the best-kept secret to parenting – spending small amounts of time (a few minutes) regularly throughout the day is worth
more to your child than spending a half day per week. If you are not doing anything super-important, stop to listen to them or look at what they want to show you. Top up their emotional cup as often as you can. If you are reading this, and you think that your relationship is not that great with your kids, and they are angry at you, not listening to you, and not doing as you ask, then it is not too late. It’s never too late to build a relationship with your child. Dr Robyn Dolby also uses the rope metaphor to explain how parents relate to their children. She says that if your child is used to being out on the end of the rope most of the time, then you need to reel the rope IN very slowly. Some parents pull on the rope too hard, and the child pulls harder. That will lead to even more fights. Nope, just reel that rope in very, very slowly, and prove to your child that you can be trusted to be the parent they need you to be. The same can be said for children who have been kept too close and too controlled (over protected) or kids who experience anxiety. You need to let the rope OUT very slowly, so they don’t get scared. Relationship. It is essential to growing strong, resilient, healthy, and happy humans. Kids don’t need stuff, they need YOU. The relationship you have with your child is their first experience of love. They will take what you teach them into their friendships and their intimate relationships. What are you teaching them about love?

4 Rules for Apologizing We all mess up. It’s just part of being human and connecting with other humans. So we all need to apologize once in a while. The thing is, a bad apology can be worse than no apology at all. So here are some tips on getting it right—and these also help me recognize what’s wrong if someone else’s apology feels icky. Be clear Name what you’re apologizing for. With adults, it can be easy to misunderstand why someone is upset. Being clear in the apology helps the listener to know that you understand what happened. “I’m sorry that I lost my temper” or “I’m sorry that I broke your chair” are more helpful than a blanket “I’m sorry.” Only apologize for your actions Have you ever had someone apologize by saying, “I’m sorry you got upset?” That’s not an apology. Neither is “I’m sorry but you…” or “I’m sorry but I…” An apology is not the place for justification or blaming. The apology is the place where you own your stuff. Many of our mistakes happen when we’re not our best selves—the apology is evidence that you recognize it wasn’t the best choice. And when it comes to owning our stuff, doesn’t matter whether the other person overreacted or baited you, the fact is that you didn’t behave as you wish you would have. Later you can think about the fact that this person baits you or otherwise. Commit to not doing the thing again Many of us have known someone whose apologies don’t seem to weigh much because they do the same thing over and over again. Part of being sorry means that you are committing not to make the same mistake again. Be sincere With this one comes the image of the child, chastened by an authority figure, who looks at the floor and mumbles, “sorry” before running off. However, the adult equivalent is when someone dashes off a quick “I’m sorry” before launching into a litany of complaints an accusations. This is the child that grew up thinking that an apology was a cursory and thoughtless gesture. Even if you meant no harm, even if your mistake was innocent and small, take a moment and reflect on the pain that was caused.

HEALTH MATTERS
Article by: Karen Klein - Healthy Living Clinic Ph: 0404 295 297 A: Unit 6/51 York Road, Penrith
Is Your Sleep Affecting Your Health? The average person today gets much less sleep than a person living 100 years ago. Daylight savings, shift work, television, computers, mobile phones and social media keep us up later and intrude on the time nature has allocated for “true restâ€?. Such changes to our sleep patterns are significant because light controls a number of hormonal and chemical messages in the body, and studies are now linking sleep deprivation with many of today’s concerning health problems, including: • Insulin sensitivity and diabetes • Weight gain and obesity • High blood pressure • Heart disease and stroke • Lowered immune function/increased infections eg colds, flu • Mood swings, anxiety, fatigue and depression Melatonin is the ‘sleep’ hormone and production is delayed by staying up into the night. Melatonin lulls us off to sleep, reduces oestrogen levels and increases our antioxidant status. Reduced levels can increase the risk of some cancers, including oestrogen-dependant ones. Leptin and Ghrelin are 2 hormones affected by sleep, and control our hunger and satiety. Studies have shown that when a person gets less than 6hrs sleep, ghrelin (the hunger hormone) is sky high when we wake and we think about food all day, especially carbohydrates! So here are some tips for a better nights sleep‌ • Get at least 8-9 hrs sleep per night • Go to bed by 10pm - the sleep before midnight is most valuable for healing • Avoid the ‘blue light’ of phones, tablets and computers 2 hrs before bed • DO NOT have your phones or computers on in the bedroom! • Make sure the room is dark and at a comfortable temperature • Avoid caffeine at night and enjoy a herbal tea eg chamomile, ‘sleepy-time’ If you make these simple changes, SLEEP will reward you with better health. Sweet dreams!

Vegemite Sandwiches Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know that the property market is hot right now and the right home can be hard to come by. The tendency in this type of market is to get caught up in the fervour and over extend your finances. When purchasing property, level heads are required because paying more than you can afford for your dream home can be disastrous. First time buyers without the experience of living with a mortgage are particularly susceptible to this trap. Over the years I have developed what we jokingly call in the office my “vegemite sandwich talk during which I sit down with my clients, discuss their goals and objectives, work though the numbers to see what is affordable for them (not just what they can borrow), and put a plan in place to achieve them. And that’s where the vegemite sandwiches come in. You see, sometimes my clients may not be ready to purchase straight away and often don’t know how to fix that. Most of the time it comes down to savings; because saving money can be hard unless you have the right mindset and focus on your goal. Taking a vegemite sandwich to work instead of buying lunch will save you about $1,500 in six months. Skipping that Barista made coffee, another $600. Dinner at home rather than the Restaurant, $2,600. You get the idea. Regardless of the position my clients are in, I always recommend saving more and borrowing less; because for every $1 more you save is $3 less you have to repay. Think of it like this; it’s not a sacrifice but an investment. You’re not paying the price, you’re reaping the rewards. Who knew that vegemite sandwiches could be so valuable?

9 Reasons Everyone Should Lift Weights #1: You Get Happy Yes, exercise of any kind gets the happy chemicals running through your body, but lifting weights seems to have an advantage on your happy level. Why? Lots of reasons that are listed below. #2: You’re More Useful You may be gifted to argue cases in court, cook an amazing meal, or keep cool while caring for a dozen 5-year-olds. Lifting weights helps you do each of them better. On top of that, it gives you the capacity to lend a helping hand when someone is struggling to lift a heavy box or open a stuck door. #3: You Get Focused If you’ve ever struggled with trying to figure out what to do when it comes to getting a great workout, I’m here to help. That includes lifting weights. As your strength and the amount of weight you lift increase, intense focus is required to avoid injury. This focus—if you let it—will carry over into your daily activities. #4: Your Body Lifting weights does so much for your physique. Push yourself hard enough and your body will amaze you constantly. But your physique isn’t the only beneficiary of weight lifting. Lifting helps your body fend off illnesses and injury by helping you shed unwanted kilos, lowering your blood pressure, improving your heart function, and more. #5: You Do the Impossible When you start lifting weights, you can’t imagine lifting any more than you do in your first session. Three weeks later, you’ve already passed the impossible mark. By doing this over and over, you pick up a mental toughness and confidence that will aid you in all areas of life. #6: You Eat Better Have you been struggling to keep your daily calorie count down? Nothing helps you stay in line better than working out. Your regular weight-lifting routine makes you more aware of what you put in your body, making it easier to say “No” to those temptations that are always around the corner. #7: Your Bones Get Stronger While the first thing you may notice after lifting weights is stronger muscles, your bones are also secretly gaining strength at the same time. Since the risk of osteoporosis and broken bones only increases as you age, guarding against them with weight lifting only makes sense! #8: Your Balance Improves Staying on your feet may not be an issue today, but as you age, it will become one of your top priorities. This is especially true considering how often elderly people lose their balance and wind up with life-altering broken bones. Lifting weights at any age will give you a balance boost that will last throughout your life. #9: Your Brain Function Increases Believe it or not, people who lift weights aren’t the meat-heads they’re made out to be. Quite the opposite. Research has proven that lifting weights actually has the power to improve your brain’s ability to do its job. Reach your fitness potential faster by coupling your good diet with a challenging exercise program. I’m here to motivate, instruct and encourage you to reach your goal. Call or email today to get started on a fitness program that will truly improve your quality of life.
