Remote Witness Room Completed At Penrith Courthouse New facilities to help empower domestic violence complainants and other vulnerable witnesses to give their best evidence in court have been installed at Penrith Courthouse.

Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith said the new remote witness room was delivered as part of a $9 million Commonwealth COVID-19 stimulus funding package.

“These new facilities will give vulnerable witnesses private, secure areas to prepare for court and to provide testimony, therefore enabling them to give their best evidence during proceedings,” Stuart Ayres said.

“Having to potentially face your abuser, or their family members, in open court can clearly exacerbate the stress of coming to testify, which is why these safe and remote facilities are so valuable.

“It is really heartening to see our region benefit from these critical new amenities that will enhance support for courageous domestic violence victim-survivors who come forward to report abuse.”

Attorney General and Minister for Prevention of Domestic and Sexual Violence Mark Speakman said these facilities meant vulnerable people would feel safer when coming to court.

“Victim-survivors of domestic, family and sexual violence have commonly been through serious trauma and coming to court can be an understandably stressful experience,” Mr Speakman said.

“Our government is committed to supporting victim-survivors if they choose to report to police, and we want them to know that these discrete facilities are available to support them and to help alleviate the trauma of testifying when they come to court.”

As part of a suite of reforms passed last November, complainants in domestic violence criminal proceedings and related apprehended domestic violence order proceedings now have a prima facie entitlement to give evidence remotely via AVL and in a closed court.

Applications Open For Apprentice Scholarships Local first year apprentices facing

financial or personal hardship will be supported with a $15,000 scholarship to undertake their trade and study through a NSW Government scholarship program.

Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies said people can now apply for a Bert Evans Apprentice Scholarship which will support 120 people to either start, change, or further their career.

“This scholarship program offers a great incentive for eligible locals to kick-start their career,” Mrs Davies said.

“Whether you need to purchase new tools, cover fuel or car maintenance, or pay for additional study, these scholarships have helped people overcome personal barriers to finish their apprenticeships and follow their trade calling.”

The NSW Government will invest $1.8 million in the program, which provides $5,000 over three years to support apprentices who demonstrate a high aptitude for vocational education and training and are committed to their on the job and formal training.

Minister for Skills and Training Alister Henskens said there were more than 107,000 people in-training across NSW, a 29 per cent increase on the year before.

“Apprenticeships are a critical part of ensuring NSW has a pipeline of skilled workers, but we also understand the financial limitations and challenges that arise for apprentices while completing their trade,” Mr Henskens said.

“As NSW has seen through bushfires, floods and the pandemic, apprentices remain a vital part of the economy and make a strong contribution to local businesses and communities.”

“The Bert Evans Apprentice Scholarships are in addition to the 100,000 fee-free apprenticeships and 70,000 fee-free traineeships and other low-fee courses funded by the NSW Government.”

The scholarship program is named in honour of the late Bert Evans AO, a passionate advocate of vocational education for more than 30 years.

Applications are open and will close Friday, 27 May 2022.

Griefline Ready To Answer Calls In NSW NSW residents struggling to cope with the death of a loved one can access six free counselling sessions from Griefline, thanks to a $1 million investment from the NSW Government.

Minister for Mental Health Bronnie Taylor said the telephone-based

counselling will be invaluable for those people struggling to cope with everyday life and social activities as a result of grief and bereavement.

“There’s no doubt that the death of someone close to us can be deeply upsetting and painful. It can be quite difficult to try to make sense of the world without our loved one in it,” Mrs Taylor said.

“For some people, grief is so profound and persistent that daily life feels too hard.

“To those people I say - you don’t have to face the anger, sadness, numbness or guilt alone. There are services and support available to help you.’”

Griefline is a registered charity which has been helping people to manage grief for more than three decades.

With the NSW Government’s support, individuals over 18 years of age living in NSW and experiencing profound levels of grief can request six free counselling sessions via Griefline’s online referral process. General Practitioners and other professionals can make a referral on a person’s behalf, with consent.

Griefline Chief Operating Officer (COO) Kate Cahill said that while grief is the normal reaction to bereavement, the death of a significant person can be challenging.

“Our team is committed to helping people resolve the complications in their grief process and learn how to integrate the loss into their life,” Mrs Cahill said.

“We’re here to support you in your grief and help you explore and manage your distress.”

James Can Really Eat Aspiring professional eater and food challenger, James Webb came to The Coffee Club Glenmore Park to showcase his unusual talent and film one of his popular food challenges recently.

With over 500,000 followers on TikTok, he completed the challenge of devouring an amazing 15 plates of food in a little over half an hour!

“I completed all 15 plates in 35mins 59secs.

That’s an average of 2mins 15secs a plate. When the food is good, it makes it easy to eat,” said James.

He has always considered himself a big eater, however, never expected to hit the competitive food arena.

“It honestly happened as a joke. I was always a big eater; I just never knew competitive eating existed. After finishing an ‘impossible’ challenge in Cessnock, my partner Kate convinced me to create a TikTok and we started sharing some of my eating adventures online. It just grew from

there” he explained.

James started doing livestream challenges from home during lockdown as a means of helping Sydney small businesses. Fast forward to 2022 and he has already entered Competitive Eating Competitions across Australia. This included pancake eating in Brisbane and sausage sizzle eating in Melbourne at Meatstock.

Despite the many food challenges, he participates in, he has been body building for most of his adult life.

“I probably eat 6 - 8 times a day, but I always ate this way. You do this when dieting/bulking in body building. I do try to keep my regular daily intake of food high, so it is not such a shock to my body on challenge days” James stated.

Stop and Watch Yourself Pass By Sometimes ploughing on is not the way forward, and we need to just STOP. Stopping and reflecting on things provides a breather for our spirit, and an opportunity to catch up or to let the inside of us catch up with the frenetic movement of our external world.

When we stop, we get to re-evaluate and reorganise the endless activities that make up our daily routines. I invite you right now to stop and find a quiet place to reflect.

In your mind’s eye watch yourself pass by in your daily routine. What are you doing? What sorts of thoughts occupy you? What are you worried about? What makes you happy? What are you feeling and why?

Try to evaluate what you see as you pass by. What desires bubble to the surface? If you believe there is a God, do you think he would be celebrating what you are doing or urging you to a path of deeper fulfilment and joy?

If you keep doing what you are doing until you are old, will you look back on your life feeling you have made the most of life, or do you think you may feel some regret?

Identify things you would like to change about your circumstances, what you are doing, or yourself. Sometimes we can change things and sometimes we don’t have the power for it.

In the Bible when Jesus says, “I am the way, the truth and the life” he offers himself as someone able to guide us forward. It is a declaration that he has the power to make the deepest changes that release fullness of life to anyone who opens their heart to him.

Orchard Hills Vet Goes Big Screen!

As a thank you to their clients, families and friends, Camille Brandt and her team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital recently invited them to join them to see the movie Clifford The Big Red Dog. They hired out an entire cinema at Skyline Drive-In Blacktown on Saturday 2nd April 2022.

The night’s celebrations were a triple thank you to everyone. In celebration of the 12th Year Anniversary, a thank you for their customer’s patience whilst they have endured contactless consultations during COVID and appreciation for winning the 2021 Penrith Small Business Awards in the Best Pet Care category.

“We had a great night at the Drive-In. Thank you to all those who attended,” said Camille.

Staff from Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital were on hand at the front gate of the Drive-In, welcoming everyone as they arrived and handing out the Candy Bar vouchers.

“It was great to see everyone’s smiling faces, after two years of contactless consultations. My face was hurting from smiling so much. So many cars were packed full of kids. Even the adults were being kids again. Some people even brought their own dogs along to watch the movie” Camille delighted.

“I surprised everyone before the movie, with a pre-recorded thank you message, which was shown on the big screen!” she added.

Most people don’t realise that there are 2 forms Of Vitamin K with different Functions There are two forms of Vitamin K, Vitamin-K1 and K2. Vitamin-K1 is high in green leafy vegetables and other foods such as kiwifruits and dried prunes. Vitamin-K2 comes from fermented foods.

The two forms clearly have different roles in the body.

Vitamin-K1 is vital for both producing blood clots to stop blood loss. It also stops inappropriate blood clotting. For example, unwanted clots in blood could lodge in the leg veins, lung, or heart arteries, causing DVT, pulmonary embolism or heart attack respectively.

Though Vitamin-K2 is synthesized from Vitamin-K1 in brain, liver, and pancreas; food scientists have recommended a separate RDI from Vitamin-K1.

Vitamin-K2 helps improve outcomes for osteoporosis, atherosclerosis, cancer, and inflammatory diseases.

For 1,000 years (30 generations), natto, the world’s richest Vitamin-K2 source, has been eaten in Northern Japanese cuisine, without any adverse side-effects. Natto is one reason for Japanese people having lower fracture risks and better bone density/ strength than other countries. Within Japan, the higher the natto consumption the lower the age-related bone loss.

Supplemented Vitamin-K2 is also very safe. In Japan, doctors regularly prescribe 45 mg/day (15 mg MK-4 three times a day) of Vitamin-K2 to osteoporotic women.

Worldwide, Vitamin-K2 trials have used doses as low as 10 μg, up to 45 mg/day for several years with no adverse side effects.

Even doses of 135 mg/day had no adverse side effects.

Recently, Japanese postmenopausal women given just 350 μg/ week of MK-7 showed significantly reduced osteoporotic fracture risk.

Vitamin-K2 deficiency is established in haemodialysis patients and implicated as the link between high rate of vascular calcification, bone mineral density loss, and fracture rate of these patients. Vitamin-K2 supplementation studies also suggests potential benefit for cardiovascular disease, type II diabetes and for patients with chronic kidney disease.

From a clinical nutrition perspective, it’s generally more beneficial to eat foods rich in Vitamin-K1 or K2 rather than supplement. Why? Foods allow a person to cover multiple bases.

For example, bone loss rate is dependent on Vitamin-K2 intake, and protein intake (amongst many other factors). When a person eats natto, they’ll get excellent, highly bio-available levels of protein, Vitamin-K2, together with many other bone-healthy factors, in the one food.

Let the Kids Play: The Value of Play for Children’s Development “Play is the work of the child,” according to physician and educator Maria Montessori. As our understanding of child development deepens, the value of play has only become more apparent.

‘Free play’ describes play that is unplanned, spontaneous, and led by the child’s curiosity, interest, or imagination. For example, a child starts to draw and decides to create their own board game on the page or to create their own map of the house. Free play is crucial for optimal physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development.

Physical play involves moving the body and can look like kicking a ball around the yard or learning a new dance. This helps to build children’s muscles and bones.

Constructive play is all about creating something, examples include building a block tower, painting a picture, and playing a song on a musical instrument. This supports children’s capacity to solve problems, connect new ideas and follow their curiosity.

Social play happens when your child plays with other children.

This gives children opportunities to develop important social skills such as cooperation, communication, and language.

Fantasy play is when children use their imagination to create worlds and characters, for example playing dress up or pretending to be a mum and baby. These activities support social and cognitive skills.

At Nepean Community and Neighbourhood Services, we offer free supported playgroups. Supported playgroups provide a fun and safe place for children to explore and engage with developmentally enriching activities such as sing-a-longs, story time, arts, craft, and free play.

Live music is back and The Jestas are ready to rock!

The popular local band, consisting of Jesse Gerhard (lead guitar/vocals), Rafaela Safadi (bass guitar/vocals) and Ben Wilson (rhythm guitar) have recently been joined by their new drummer, Eddie Green.

“They have already played some shows to great acclaim and are super excited to be getting back out there and being musicians again” explained Rachel Byrne, band representative of The Jestas.

Forming at Glenmore Park High School whilst studying music together, the band made the most of performing during the pandemic. This included changing their act as an acoustic band temporarily.

“It was a pretty tough time we imagine for a lot of bands, but we made sure we kept moving during that period. We changed our act to acoustic. This allowed us to get away with some live gigs here and there, since it’s a little more of a laid-back performance. That and any song writing we could squeeze in, we did” said The Jestas.

With guitars plugged back into their amps, they have been busy performing locally. This included recent performances at Full Bull Clothing’s Triple B Event at the Wallacia Hotel on 2nd April and 16th April and Warragamba Workers Club on 25th April.

They hope to also record some new songs in the not-toodistant future.

“We do have new songs written by us that we’ll be playing at our shows. We believe that once we get a bigger following from these shows, then we’ll aim towards recording some of our original material” The Jestas replied.

“Now that we have an act ready to go, we just want to get out there, play as many places as we can and take as many opportunities as possible. So, here we are. This is us. We are The Jestas, and we hope to see you around” they ended.

With the whistles now blown, signalling the start of the 2022 Penrith District Netball Association Winter Competition, this year marks a historical milestone for Glenmore Park Netball Club.

The popular club will be celebrating their 25th Anniversary in the local competition, after it was established in 1998.

This season will see 23 teams taking the court, consisting of approx. 230 players. They will represent the club in all grades, from the Under 7’s to Seniors.

The pandemic affected last season and the competition was unable to be completed. This year, a full season including finals is anticipated for the sport.

“Last season, just getting the kids onto the court to play was an achievement in itself. With the new competition, we’re looking forward to a full season, more milestones, umpires badged and watching our teams develop and become competitive” said Nicole Preissl, President of Glenmore Park Netball Club.

The club will be celebrating their 25th Anniversary throughout the season and year ahead.

There are still limited vacancies in the Seniors teams for the 2022 Winter Competition. They also welcome any new sponsors who would like to jump on board and get behind them.

Once again, the hard work and dedication of the volunteers that make up Glenmore Park Netball Club is appreciated by all.

“We rely heavily on volunteers. They are a big part of what we do as a club and our success” Nicole ended.

Natalie, who was named the Australian Newborn Photographer of the Year in 2016, hopes to have her purposebuilt studio completed this year.

“I’m in the process of building a brand-new custom studio, which is in Mulgoa Rise. It will be a gorgeous massive space with high ceilings, a client bathroom and external access. The studio will be ready near the end of the year and Christmas Minis will be epic! I will be able to offer a gorgeous wet weather option for the first time. It will also feature beautiful hand panted backdrops ready for families, maternity, and newborn work” smiled Natalie.

With an interest in photography from the age of 16, Natalie photographed her first wedding not long after that. She started her business in 2004, before going fulltime in 2009 and has now been a professional photographer for 18 years.

“I was always interested in art, especially drawn to the Renaissance period and loved the works of Da Vinci and Michelangelo. I was in awe of the realism of their works, and their use of light and shadow. Knowing that’s what I wanted to achieve with my art, I moved to the camera, as my drawing skills were not that well-honed” she explained.

“I love capturing family connections, emotions, and heirloom portraits. I have loads of fun during extended family sessions, but I’m just as comfortable cuddling a newborn and capturing their first special portraits” Natalie reflected.

Natalie too has some special locations she likes to visit when creating memories with her camera, “Now that I’m back in Glenmore Park, I’ve been using local reserves including Glenbrook, Nepean River, and Yarramundi. However, with the recent flooding, it has been challenging to find a location that hasn’t been destroyed. Areas were just starting to regenerate from last year’s devastation, but everything has been hit so hard again. But it hasn’t stopped me from fulfilling client expectations” she replied.

Kings of the Jungle Emu Plains/Glenmore Park Lions Junior AFL Club are ready and roaring for the 2022 season.

With the new season beginning in April/May, this year will see about 150 players take the field at Dukes Oval for the local club.

This will consist of players in Auskick (Under 5’s to Under 8’s) and Under 9’s through to Under 17’s.

Registrations for 2022 are still open. The cost to register is $100 for Auskick and $100 for Under 9’s to Under 17’s for the season.

Active Kids Vouchers, issued by the NSW Government, can be used when registering with the Lions. There are still vacancies in most age groups.

The pandemic’s effect on last season hasn’t dampened the club spirits, with many junior players shining. Under 16’s player Dylan Jones, was chosen to join the Giants Academy. The Giants also run a Development Academy for Under 12’s to Under 15’s players and the club has 15-20 players in this program.

“Emu Plains/Glenmore Park Lions Junior AFL are looking forward to a full season ahead, with do disruptions due to COVID. The only delays we’ve had this far are due to the wet weather. We’re hopeful for a bigger presence and we can do this with more games” explained Paul Jones, Executive Committee Member of Emu Plains/Glenmore Park Lions Junior AFL Club.

“Our Under 14’s were crowned premiers in 2020. We would love to see more teams make it this season” he continued.

Toyota Forklift Handling and Penrith Lock-Up Storage are onboard as sponsors of the Lions. Sponsors and volunteers are welcome throughout the year.

This season will also see the club utilise the recently upgraded lighting at Dukes Oval, their home ground.
