Plant a Tree for Mother’s Day
Penrith’s beloved Trees for Mum event is celebrating sixteen years this Mother’s Day.
Penrith City Council’s annual Trees for Mum community tree planting event returns for its sweet 16 on Sunday 14 May at Harold Corr Oval in Cambridge Park.
The event will be divided into 30-minute sessions, with the first session starting at 8.30am and the last session at 12pm.
Registrations are essential to join the day; Council’s Bushcare team will be using the numbers to ensure they have enough trees and tags for participants to plant and write on. Register at penrith. city/events
Penrith Mayor Tricia Hitchen praised the event for its longevity and how it continues to provide the community with an opportunity to remember and celebrate their mum.
“We’re excited at Council to be celebrating 16 years of Trees for Mum in Penrith,” Cr Hitchen said.
“Penrith is one of the only local government areas that has continued to host this special event, and our Bushcare team is excited to not only be hosting its 16th year, but to be celebrating such a meaningful day with community members.
“Planting a tree is such a simple gesture to honour your mum, grandmother, aunt or a mother-figure in your life and can be a very positive and meaningful experience to share with family and friends on Mother’s Day.
“Trees for Mum is not only a great way to gift Mum something special, but it’s an opportunity to learn about our local environment and help restore our endangered bushland by planting native trees or shrubs,” Cr Hitchen continued.
Participants are encouraged to wear closed-toe shoes and a hat. Sunscreen will be available on the day.
The native trees and shrubs available for planting are proudly provided by Council’s nursery.
To ensure there are enough trees for everyone to plant and so the Penrith Council Bushcare team can coordinate the 30-minute sessions, please book your attendance by registering at penrith. city/events
Trees for Mum is one of many tree planting projects Council is undertaking this year across the Penrith local government area as part of the Greening our City tree planting program. Find out more at yoursaypenrith.com.au/greeningourcity
This project is part of the Greening Our City grant program that is proudly funded by the NSW Government in association with Local Government NSW.

The Coffee Club Glenmore Park Celebrates Grand Opening
The Coffee Club Glenmore Park have had the Grand Opening of their new premises at HomeCo Glenmore Park Town Centre, taking place last month.
The big day of celebrations on Saturday 22nd April brought together the local community with fun activities that were enjoyed by the whole family.
This included their Free Coffee for a Year Competition (exclusive to the Glenmore Park community), lucky door prizes, raffles, guessing competitions, pendant giveaway, kid’s activities, local celebrity appearances, showbags with goodies from local stores in Glenmore Park for the first 100 people and My88 FM broadcasting live.
The Grand Opening coincided with the newly renovated premises for The Coffee Club Glenmore Park.
“We have a shiny brand new store, so central that you now can’t miss us or our signature orange shirts. We are even fortunate enough to have a new coffee machine and all the gadgets to go with it and we opened launching a fresh new menu with all of the favourites. Not to mention our familiar smiling faces to serve you” said Joanne Portela, Franchisee of The Coffee Club Glenmore Park.
With Mother’s Day just around the corner, Joanne anticipates it to be a big occasion for the business.
“Mother’s Day will be massive this year, so be sure to get your bookings in early when venturing out on Mum’s special day. We will also be hosting the Biggest Morning Tea in June, wishing to exceed last year’s $2,000 raised” she explained.
The new menu is certain to satisfy your tastebuds!
“You can’t go past our signature blend coffees, frappes, and the best thick shakes in town. Our fresh new menu caters for all, whether it’s the traditional big breakfast or Eggs Benny, to lite snacks such as our famous Flat Grills to hot chips and not to mention our kids’ meals. And ‘yes’ our steak sandwiches are back!” Joanne smiled.
Joanne and her team would like to thank the community for their continued support.
“Andrew and I would like to take the opportunity to thank the local community for such a warm reception in relaunching the café. We have been overwhelmed with all the support and positivity we have received, including being congratulated by all that visit or simply walk past on their way to collect their groceries. At one stage, we almost had more flowers than the florist themselves, so a big thank you to the GP community” she ended.

Australian Air League
In 1934, a gentleman by the name of George Robey, along with other local parents, decided to form an organisation for the youth of Australia to encourage them with their love of aviation. This organisation was called the Australian Air League.
Since this time, the Australian Air League has been teaching young boys and girls nationwide all about aviation, while helping them develop important life skills like leadership, discipline, self-confidence, and teamwork.
The Australian Air League started with a small Squadron of 30 Cadets in Manly NSW. Since then, membership has expanded throughout NSW by the thousands. They currently have Squadrons in areas as far north as Maitland and as far south as the Southern Highlands. There are also Squadrons in the ACT, Victoria, Queensland, and South Australia.
NSW Group has its own Air Activities Centre at Camden Aerodrome. This centre is run by volunteer pilots and mechanics who help educate their future pilots and teach them to fly. Squadrons also attend joy flights with their members at the centre.
Each week, their members attend their local Squadrons, where they will learn valuable skills and take part in fun and interesting activities and classes. Some of their classes include meteorology, navigation, photography, and community service. Squadrons also attend training camps, recreational camps, sport days, ANZAC parades, local parades, and group reviews where competitions are held.
The election result was a challenging night for the NSW Liberal Party. I want to thank Dominic Perrottet for his vision, service, and leadership of our State both as Treasurer and Premier during the most challenging period of our time. I also want to thank his wife, Helen, and the family for all their support.
I also want to thank the people of Badgerys Creek for returning me to Parliament. I am humbled by this result and eager to continue to be the strong voice and advocate for Western Sydney.
The people of Western Sydney and NSW more broadly sent a clear message on election night that they want a Liberal Party that stands up for families, backs in our small businesses and governs with compassion.
Therefore, I have decided that I can offer the leadership and representation that the people of Western Sydney and NSW more broadly demand. Western Sydney is the engine room of the NSW economy, and it is critical that the Liberal Party has a spokesperson that can truly champion its people and their aspirations. The new Western Sydney Airport linking our region to the world, the emerging city of Bradfield and future prosperity of all depend on it.
Our Party must also lead with policies that serve families, individuals and supports small businesses. As the only Liberal left standing in Sydney with what looks to be an increase in support for me, I believe I can offer so much more to the NSW Parliamentary Liberal Party, and I will be seeking support from colleagues in the Party over the coming days and weeks for the deputy leadership.
I am committed to ensuring that the Liberal Party offers a clear choice between political parties and addresses the serious concerns of the people of Western Sydney and NSW more broadly. I am honoured to put my name forward for the deputy leadership of the NSW Liberal Party and I look forward to working hard to earn the trust and confidence of my colleagues and the people of NSW.
The organisation is entirely self-funded. It is also staffed by adult members who are volunteers. These volunteers give their time to help encourage and educate its members about aviation and life skills. All adult members and volunteers are Working with Children checked.
They welcome boys and girls from the age of 8 years old from all different cultures and backgrounds. Parents and families are welcome to support or even join their local Squadron as a volunteer.
When you join the Australian Air League, you will make new friends and take part in fun and exciting activities, on the ground and in the air.
The Australian Air League is running both a fun and educational program that is making fine citizens out of our young Australians.
For more information of the Australian Air League and your nearest Squadron, please visit their website at www.airleague. com.au or email them at info@airleague.com.au.

Ward Angels, a community-based volunteer organisation, is collecting donations of Mother’s Day gifts for the mothers, grandmothers and carers who will spend their Mother’s Day at the bedside of their sick child.
In previous years, Ward Angels have been able to provide over $75,000 worth of gifts to women in The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, Sydney Children’s Hospital Randwick, Bear Cottage, Mount Druitt Hospital Paediatric Unit, Blacktown Hospital Paediatric Unit, John Hunter NICU, Campbelltown Hospital NICU and Nepean Hospital NICU.
This year, with the help of the community they are hoping to provide gifts to even more hospitals.
Zita Singh-Gosai spent last Mother’s Day in hospital with her precious newborn Samaya and sums up how it feels to spend Mother’s Day in hospital, when all your thoughts and focus are on your sick child.
“I’ve held my baby girl five times now since she was born. She’s been connected to tubes or in an incubator or just not able to be held for one reason or another since her birth so cuddles with Samaya are very special to me. Today was a hard day to celebrate for once.”
After receiving a Mother’s Day gift from Ward Angels last year, Zita sent a beautiful message of thanks. “Your gifts made my daynot just for the material things in them but the simple fact that it reminded me that other mums are going through the same or have experienced this before, that I’m not alone and that there are wonderful humans still out in the world doing what they can to make sure someone else has a smile on their face.”
“We may not be able to make their child better, but we can provide a gift that makes them feel loved and celebrated- that shows we see their struggle and strength. We want the mothers to feel the arms of the community around them this Mother’s Day” said Ward Angels founder Josie Dincel.
Ward Angels is asking individuals, organizations, businesses, and community groups to help with this worthwhile cause. The Ward Angels team have said “If it’s something you would like to receive as a Mother’s Day gift, then we would love to receive it as a donation!”
For more information about donating or volunteering, find them on Facebook or visit www.wardangels.org.au.

Glenmore Park’s Heath Lincoln has just chalked up 25 years as a professional musician. Whether he’s playing locally or in the city, the talented singer/guitarist loves nothing more than putting his own stamp on a popular song.
Lincoln describes his music as “easy listening pop/soft rock”. He started out playing a lot of 90’s to 2000’s music and later shifted his focus to modern pop.
“I began learning how to live-loop (think Ed Sheeran) and that opened a whole new mix of options. I enjoy trying to change a song into my own, and with live-looping I can introduce percussion, harmony, bass, and guitar into my performance” said Heath to the Glenmore Gazette.
Live-looping is the recording of layers upon layers live in realtime in front of an audience to create an entire performance, often with just a single person.
“Musicians such as Ed Sheeran, Vance Joy, Crowded House really inspire me, but I also love transforming a song by Calvin Harris or Dua Lipa and stripping it back to something more acoustic” he added.
From a young age, he was surrounded by music, particularly within his family.
“My dad sings and plays the guitar, and I was brought up around that. I always wanted to learn how to play guitar, and it wasn’t until I had a great Year 9 music teacher that I began to learn. I was often inspired by my dad singing as well. I recall my brother and I singing harmonies along to songs as we would drive in the car”.
Heath can often be seen playing local venues such as Settlers Mulgoa, Rusty Penny Brewery, Squinters Brewery, AG Bar and Lone Star Rib House and Brews Penrith. He also plays at The Squires Landing at The Rocks in the city.
What does he enjoy most about being a professional musician?
“It allows me to get creative. I’m constantly thinking of new ways I could be playing a song, or a new harmony to throw in. I enjoy changing things up each time I play and challenging myself to learn something new, such as introducing a new instrument into the mix.
“The best thing about my performance, is seeing someone tapping along with their foot, or singing the words to themselves, or a smile over in my direction. It gives me validation and it brings me joy to bring joy to others” he ended.
To find out where Heath is playing next, search @ heathlincolnmusic on Facebook and Instagram.

How to Tell the Difference between Bullying and Fighting
Do you know the difference between bullying and fighting? Researchers have found that many parents struggle to know when it’s bullying or just everyday quarrels between friends, classmates, or siblings. This article will help you learn more.
Children learn important social and emotional skills when they navigate differences with others. Depending on a child’s level of skill and their emotional state, these clashes can often be resolved with minimal to no adult intervention. Bullying, in contrast, is not a ‘rite of passage’ or part of an ordinary childhood. Enduring experiences of being bullied or bullying eithers can severely compromise a child or young person’s social, emotional, and physical development, therefore serious and proactive adult intervention is always required.
Not all mean behaviours are bullying. Pushing, kicking, name calling, starting rumours, or excluding can be extremely distressing, but none are bullying in isolation. Bullying is not a single incident, but rather a pattern of behaviours repeated over time. Bullies often progressively use a combination of verbal, physical, social, and/or online strategies to hurt a victim.
As children learn emotional and behavioural control, they can struggle to disagree respectfully with other children. Losing control and lashing out in the heat of the moment is not bullying. On the other hand, bullying is intentional; bullies make a conscious choice to harm a specific child.
Bullying is an abuse of power. Power can be physical (i.e., size, strength), psychological (i.e., intelligence, age/maturity), or social (i.e., popularity). Certainly, two children fighting can escalate to serious harm, but if both kids are on a reasonably equal footing this is not bullying. In those cases, both children may need to be separated and supported to develop emotion regulation or social skills.
So, next time you feel concerned about bullying – ask yourself three questions:
1. Is this a pattern? Is the behaviour repeated over time?
2. Does the bully intend to harm this specific victim?
3. Is there a power imbalance (physical, psychological, social) between the two children?
If you answer “yes” to all three, then you need to act. You can get further help and support from the BULLY Project by visiting thebullyproject.com.au/parents.

A Toxic Bouquet
With Mother’s Day coming up, many of us will be heading to the florist to buy our mum’s a colourful bouquet of flowers. Unfortunately, we often return home with flowers that may be toxic for our pets. Although many flowers and plants are mild-tomoderate in terms of toxicity and can cause “mild” symptoms like a gastrointestinal upset, when pets consume highly toxic plants it can be fatal — even if they only have a very small amount.
The following list contains six common flowers toxic to cats and dog
Lilies - Lilies (such as Peace Lily, Calla Lily, Easter Lily and Tiger Lily) are highly toxic and potentially fatal to cats. Some types are also toxic to dogs. Avoid having any plant from the lily family in or around the home. We need to be very mindful of theses flowers, and their pollen, as they may cause vomiting, diarrhoea, lack of appetite, stomach pain, depression, difficulty swallowing, kidney damage, kidney failure, multiple organ failure.
Daffodils - Daffodil ingestion can result in trouble swallowing, serious heart irregularities, and respiratory distress, so if you think your dog has eaten any part of the daffodil or bulbs, see veterinary treatment immediately. Skin exposure also causes symptoms, such as burning, rash, itching, and inflammation.
Carnations - When ingested, the carnation can cause gastrointestinal upset and exposure to skin may lead to dermatitis in your dog. ... While the exact toxin is unknown, it can cause toxicity symptoms such as skin irritation and diarrhoea in your dog if exposed to or ingested.
Chrysanthemums – These come in many different sizes, colours, and styles, but they are all toxic. ... The entire plant is poisonous and contains sesquiterpene lactones, pyrethrins, and several other toxic substances. All parts of the chrysanthemum plant are potentially harmful if ingested, especially the flower heads. Symptoms of toxicity include nausea, vomiting, rashes, increased salivation, diarrhoea and lack of coordination.
Tulips - All parts of a tulip plant are toxic to dogs, from root to leaf, stalk, and flower. The bulbs are especially poisonous because it has a higher concentration of the plant’s naturally occurring chemicals, including the toxic Tulipalin. Pets may experience drooling, vomiting and diarrhoea, heart problems and difficulty breathing as a result of tulip poisoning.
Ivy - any popular ivy plants, including English Ivy and Devil’s Ivy/Golden Pothos, have moderate toxicity to pets. Mouth and stomach irritation, excessive drooling, foaming at the mouth, swelling of the mouth, tongue and lips, vomiting, diarrhoea will occur if ingested.
If your pets’ chews, licks or ingests any of these toxic flowers or plants, please call Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital on 0247362720 and seek veterinary attention.

HEALTH MATTERS
Could a Unique Probiotic Help Reduce Ulcerative Colitis Relapse ?
The gastrointestinal tract is a complex ecological environment. Every person has about 100 trillion bacteria, made up of 40,000 different species, living in their large intestine. This represents 10 times the total number of human body cells. 70% of these bacteria have never been cultured, and together they make up 50% of faecal volume.
We know that gut bacteria are involved in the development Ulcerative Colitis (UC) because both:
1. Antibiotics and,
2. Probiotics have some therapeutic efficacy in UC.
Animal studies on Colitis have shown that changes occur in the:
1. relative densities (some bacteria are increased in numbers from normal, others decreased);
2. spatial distribution (some bacteria are now found in abnormal locations in the large bowel) of the dominant bacterial groups in the large intestine of animals, and that these changes precede the onset of Colitis. Unfortunately, the results of studies using probiotics in the treatment of Ulcerative Colitis have generally been somewhat inconsistent. For those in which probiotics showed positive effects, results were only modest. This may be because of the:
1. variable actions of the different probiotic species tested,
2. limitations of most probiotic preparations, i.e.:
a. they ‘provide a comparatively low numbers and diversity of bacterial species in comparison with the vast human gut microbiota’.
b. strains used may not be able to compete effectively against microbial community currently resident in the gut due to the complex interrelationships ready established between these adapted, indigenous microbes.
In 2004 however, researchers in Germany tested the probiotic E. coli Nissle 1917 in Ulcerative Colitis patients (Kruis et al 2004). 327 patients were given either E. coli Nissle 1917 probiotic 200 mg once daily, mesalazine 500 mg three times daily, or placebo for 12 months. Researchers then assessed patient response to each intervention via clinical and endoscopic activity indices and histology (looking at bowel tissue under a microscope). They found that:
1. 64% of patients on E. coli Nissle 1917 and
2. 66% of patients on mesalazine remained in remission at the end of the study. Study authors concluded that the probiotic E. coli Nissle 1917, was as effective as the gold standard drug mesalazine at maintaining remission in patients with Ulcerative Colitis.

FOOD 4 THOUGHT
Brooks
3989 Lakeside Parade, Jordan springs 2747
This month, Michelle and I were excited to visit Brooks for lunch and we were not disappointed.
When we entered Brooks, we were greeted by Bec, who really looked after us. After ordering a drink, we chose a booth and studied the menu. I found the booth to be very spacious, comfortable with a round table and plenty of room to spread out. Having a large table gives you plenty of room for your food and drinks and from Michelle’s description, you can look outside and appreciate the bushland and wonderful view.
The atmosphere was pleasant, and the music selection was amazing. We were keen to try the Fried Calamari. The calamari consisted of calamari, rocket, lemon, and aioli. This option was Dairy Free and Gluten Free. It was pleasing to see many options on the menu catered for those with dietary requirements and other allergies. The menu options were Gluten Free and Dairy Free and there were also Vegan options.
The calamari was crisp, full of flavour and delicious. I enjoyed the texture of the calamari along with the spicy flavour and the different shapes of each piece of calamari. The aioli added extra flavour to this exceptional dish, and I would choose this option again in the future.
We were also wanting to try the Chilli Prawn Pizza. This pizza consisted of chilli prawns, red onion, cherry tomatoes, and rocket. Every bite of this pizza filled your mouth with amazing flavours, and I particularly loved the chilli prawns and the onion. The base could be folded in half and doing so kept the ingredients on the pizza and this was like eating a sandwich.
To complete our lunch, we ordered some Ricotta Doughnuts. These doughnuts were amazing and flavourful.
I highly recommend Brooks Jordan Springs. I give them a ten out of ten. The customer service was outstanding, and I look forward to visiting again in the future. Brooks has something for everyone, and I thank Bec for looking after us.
2023 Mother’s Day Classic
Australia’s biggest fun run and walk for breast cancer research, the Women in Super Mother’s Day Classic, have announced more than 70 locations nationwide where participants can celebrate, honour, and raise vital funds for those impacted by breast cancer.
“We are excited to announce that in 2023, the 26th year of the Mother’s Day Classic, there will be 73 locations in major cities, metro areas and regional towns for Australians to unite nationally in support of breast cancer research,” Mother’s Day Classic CEO, Zara Lawless, said.
“And we’re thrilled to reveal there are almost 20 locations that are either joining the Mother’s Day Classic nationwide community for the first time, or rejoining us after taking a break through the disruption of the last few years.”
There will also be 12 popular venues returning after an absence of a few years including Edenhope, Ouyen and Lilydale in Victoria, Parramatta Park, and Kyogle in New South Wales, as well as Chinchilla, Roma, and Toowoomba in Queensland.
Major events will have an event village, entertainment, live music, and food stalls as well as activities for kids both oncourse and in the event village.
If you prefer staying local, there is an option to walk or run at one of the many Local events that will be held across Australia on Mother’s Day. These events will have strong community support and, depending on location, will include music and entertainment, food and market stalls, fundraising opportunities, and the option to walk or run with pets at select locations.
Another new element to this year’s event is the addition of some longer running distances. There will be a 5km and a 10km run in Sydney and Western Sydney.
“Over 1.5 million people have participated in the Mother’s Day Classic for breast cancer research in the past 25 years, donating $41.5 million, and each year we are building on the success of the event. So, this year we’re giving running enthusiasts more options, adding longer distances to some locations,” Ms Lawless said.
If you’re unable to join the tens of thousands of runners, joggers, and walkers on the day you can still participate in your own way at any place with MDC Anywhere. Participants will receive a race bib and medallion in the mail so they can create their very own unique MDC experience and have access to the MDC online fundraising dashboard and fitness tracker.
“By signing up for the Mother’s Day Classic you are joining a passionate, pink, and purpose-driven community united in the fight against breast cancer,” Ms Lawless said.
“We cannot wait to see everyone suiting up, showing up and standing stronger together on Mother’s Day and as we bring communities back together across Australia.”
Visit mothersdayclassic.com.au for more information on your nearest location.
Start your Mother’s Day with purpose by suiting up, showing up, and standing up against breast cancer.

Managing Hard Skin
Callus and corns are the main types of hard skin we treat.
Callus
When a persistent pressure or friction is applied to your skin, the body’s normal response is often to thicken (form callus) to protect it. If left to build up, the hard skin can become painful or crack. There are some genetic conditions that lead to excessive amounts of callus, eg. palmoplantar keratoderma.
Corns
When the pressure on the skin is very high, the callus becomes dense and a localised lesion (corn) forms. Soft corns can occur between your toes and are acutely painful. What can you do?*
1) Reduce pressure
Identifying the source of pressure (eg. tight footwear, certain activities, toe deformities) and reducing it is the best way to manage callus and corns.
2) Moisturise
Certain creams such as urea-containing heel balm can help soften callus and improve skin quality.
3) Nix the corn pads
These can be unsafe and can result in infections in certain patients, particularly those with diabetes or peripheral vascular disease.
4) Pumice stones
Regularly soaking feet and rubbing off hard skin with a pumice stone is a great way to self-manage hard skin. Beware of salons with shared equipment and poor sterilisation procedures (using boiling water isn’t enough!), as the risk of infection is high.
5) See your podiatrist
Podiatrists can easily remove callus and corns using a scalpel. They are highly skilled in removing a safe amount of callus, as well as identifying and treating other issues such as blood within the callus, wart viruses or ulceration.
Treatment can provide immediate relief, however, this might be temporary if the cause of the pressure is not addressed. Your podiatrist can assess your foot shape, biomechanics, footwear and skin conditions. Footwear changes, offloading the area with padding, custom-made silicone devices and foot orthoses are often used to reduce pressure and corn formation. In some cases, referral on to a podiatric surgeon can be made if it is found that the underlying cause is a bone or toe deformity and is not responding to conservative care.

The growth in popularity of basketball in Australia continues to rise, none more so than right here in Glenmore Park. Glenmore Park Basketball Club have just completed their largest season in more than 10 years!
The 2022/23 Summer Season saw 290 players registered with the local club, making up 36 teams that competed in the Penrith and Districts Basketball Association Competition. They had teams in every age group except one, with teams playing in almost every division of these age groups.
There were highlights a plenty for the sprawling club, with players representing the purple, gold, and whites well.
Of the 36 teams that competed, 17 teams made the SemiFinals, 7 made the Grand Finals and 4 teams were Grand Final winners.
Combine that with a number of their players making representative teams, including Deacon Petersen being selected in the Samoan National Basketball Team that competed in the Oceania Championships in Guam, and they have had a lot of highlights this past season.
“The Winter Competition recommenced late last month, on the 22nd and 23rd of April. We still have some availability in some teams for the upcoming season, which looks to be nearly as large as the last one. Feel free to reach out to us if you’re interested to see if we have availability” explained Kathleen Burke, Club Secretary of Glenmore Park Basketball Club.
An exciting milestone awaits, with planning currently underway for the club’s Silver Anniversary at the end of the year.
“Stay tuned as we are hoping to mark this achievement with a special event” she smiled.
The club has seen first-hand the boom of the sport, growing from 12 teams just 4 years ago to where they are today.
“It’s an exciting time to be part of basketball. With the success of the Sydney Kings winning their second consecutive championship this past couple of months, to the number of Australian born players playing internationally, especially in the NBA in the US. Even our own local team, the Penrith Panthers Basketball Association being granted an NBL1 franchise that just recently tipped off their inaugural season” Kathleen stated.
“Basketball locally and globally is growing rapidly, and there has never been a better time to be part of the fun, excitement and exhilaration of our game” she ended.

Zonta Club of Nepean Valley’s Celebrates 30th Birthday
The Zonta Club of Nepean Valley celebrated it’s 30th birthday last month, on the 4th of April.
Zonta has been around for over 100 years “building a better world for women and girls”. The Nepean Valley branch has certainly done a lot in working towards this goal. This has included making 2,500 breast cushions to 19,000 birthing kits, awards for female students in STEM, performing arts, public service, TAFE, university, and donating funds. Funds such as approximately $450,000 and goods to services like the Women’s Health Centre, The Haven, Kairos, and The Miranda Project.
These unsung heroes deserved a night of fun to celebrate their achievements with family, friends, and past members.
In attendance was Karen McKeown MP (Member for Penrith), Penrith Councillors, President Angela Pezzano, Zonta District 24 Area 2 Director Helen Grimson, past and present members, Honorary Zontians, representatives of Lions Club Cambridge ParkPresident and Past District Governor Derek Margerison and Charles Armstrong, President of Penrith Rotary Joh Dickens, Zonta Nepean Valley Festival of Art and Design - Michael Powe (Sponsor) and Johnny Romeo (Patron), representatives from Kairos, Miranda Project, Penrith Women’s Health Centre, Cloverfield and past Zonta Nepean Valley student scholarship recipients.
Certificates were awarded to members who have been in the club for 10, 20 and 30 years and a slide show ran all night showcasing highlights from the club’s thirty year history. The theme of green and pearls for the 30th anniversaries was clear in the room’s fashion choices, and adorning the walls were images of women the Zonta members admired. There was also a guessing competition of the members when they were 30.
President Angela Pezzano said, “These women are the most admirable, humble, generous, and kind human beings you’ll ever meet. They truly deserved a night in celebrating the gifts that they are, and those that they give to women and girls, locally, nationally, and internationally.”

‘Mindfulness’
‘Mindfulness’ is simply about being fully present in each moment and aware of our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and surrounding environment without reacting or being overwhelmed by what’s going on around us. It is to be aware of what is happening in our own inner world, as we encounter life.
‘Mindfulness’ is used to help those struggling with mental illness to find peace and to cope. But this simple practice also offers wider benefits.
‘Mindfulness’ can help us find the beauty and value in our life as it is right now. The values of Western culture have us constantly pushing for something ‘better’ or ‘higher’ in terms of external things (money, possessions, being noticed etc). Our best life always seems to be elsewhere or something different and not now. But God gives us gifts in each moment and our best life is found when inwardly, we can recognise and receive these gifts here and now. This is because life always happens in the ‘now’. Tomorrow we will again be in ‘now’. These now-gifts may involve being aware of the beauty of the love being expressed towards us by someone. Or perhaps joy as a cool breeze blows into the living room after a forty-degree scorcher. These sorts of things add richness to our life here and now, if we can be mindful enough to receive them.
Mother Teresa wrote, “We need to find God, and he cannot be found in noise and restlessness. God is the friend of silence.” The Bible teaches that God is spirit, and we must relate to him with the inside part of us. Jesus taught that we live from the insideout. Our real prayers are the cry from our hearts. And we hear God speak in our inner being. We could say that relationship with God is ‘spiritual’ – because God is spirit, we connect with him and relate to him in that inner, spiritual space or our inner being.
When we are mindful or aware of what is happening inside us in a God-focussed way, we can find God.
FAITH – GRACE WEST ANGLICAN CHURCH

On Monday 3rd April at 11.00am, approximately four hundred people gathered at St Thomas’ Church, Mulgoa to say their final goodbyes to Margaret Fowler, wife of Ross and mother to John, Alison and Gordon. Margaret had been a long-standing member of St Thomas’ Church, serving there in numerous capacities. In December 2021 she became part of the new community of Grace West Anglican Church, Silverdale.
I had the privilege to speak at her funeral. The closing part of my message went like this:
“The eyes of faith set themselves not on what is seen today - death, but they listen to the promise of God and trust him. They look forward to the day when we are reunited with Margaret. What you see around you is wasting away, but what God promises is eternal: real life with him and his people, forever. Remember what Jesus said to Martha before he called Lazarus out of his grave. He spoke a word of promise. A word that can be trusted. “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?” Martha replied, Yes, Lord.” (John 11:25-27)

The workshop will cover topics such as:
• How to supervise learner drivers
• How to complete the Learner Driver Logbook
• The important role you play in supporting your child or young adult while they learn how to drive
• What the license conditions for Learners and Provisional License holders are
• How to complete 120 hours of supervised driving with a minimum of 20 hours night driving
• Advice on holding L plates for a minimum of one year before a Provisional (P1) License
You will also have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have and receive advice from a Road Safety expert.
The workshop is best suited for anyone supervising a person under 25 years or younger who is working towards their learner driver’s license or who are now clocking up their hours. You can be a parent, older sibling or an adult with a full license supervising a young person getting their Ls.

What about you? Do you believe that Jesus is the resurrection and the life? Do you believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, who had come into the world? How do you respond to Jesus? When asked that same question, Margaret (Fowler) replied, ‘Yes, Lord.’”
