Here Comes Santa Claus (In a Truck) Santa Claus will be trading in his sleigh for a fire truck this month, with the man in the big red suit joining Llandilo Rural Fire Brigade for the Santa Run to Jordan Springs and Llandilo. The Santa Run will visit Jordan Springs on Sunday 16th December, beginning in the morning where the fire truck will visit various local parks. It will continue again on Christmas Eve in Llandilo. It’s a great opportunity to come and say hi to Santa and take photos. Santa will have lollies onboard for the kids and can only be at each park for 15 minutes as it is his busy time of year. “This year, we hope that Santa grants our wishes for a quiet season. We hope that we can get around and visit everyone without the threat of fires that Summer can pose for us” said Rick Burns, Captain of Llandilo Rural Fire Brigade. Captain Rick has been a member of the RFS at Llandilo for 26 years and always

There is Always H.O.P.E

 Local resident Lisa Crisford | Image: LStudio Photography. Article: Lisa Crisford

Just four short months ago, I was a survivor wanting to share a very personal self-healing journey with the world. I created a blog. A very simple story blog. The story told, was my way of shedding an unwanted skin of childhood sexual abuse. My way of moving past survival mode and into the world of the living. My way of finally lifting the heavy weight off my shoulders that had taken up residence since I was only four years old. H.O.P.E began from courage. From strength, deep and inner strength. As I shared my story, people reached out. Strangers reached out. The common word, HOPE. So, I created H.O.P.E (Healing Our Princess Esteem). It was created with hope to inspire others who have also survived childhood sexual abuse to come forward. To stand tall. To wear their scars proudly. To show the world it hasn’t broken us. Moving forward, H.O.P.E will become a Not-For-Profit organisation. H.O.P.E will walk alongside survivors, encouraging, empowering them to re-build their Princess Esteem. Aiding them to relight their inner warrior princess. H.O.P.E will develop seminars, workshops, motivational talks covering the very essence of what it feels like, looks like, to be a survivor. To educate on both the easy to see and silent indicators, the ones in which unless you are a survivor, you couldn’t possibly understand. To build/create wellness camps for survivors and to be known as H.O.P.E Retreats for young girls between the ages of 14 and 18. Inside each retreat will be professionals and practitioners who aide in a holistic approach to building a positive self-worth and self-esteem. From psychologists, meditation experts, fitness instructors right through to stylists, hairdressers and make-up artists. Last month, H.O.P.E held its first ‘Coffee and Chat’ catch-up. An informal meeting where survivors can come and meet fellow survivors. Whilst no one attended, I want it known, I understand! I know the complexity of wanting to come forward, yet you are frozen. You can’t. I am okay with this. I’ll wait. Every week, I’ll wait. I will wait until each and every one of you feels brave enough to move forward. For more information, you can visit H.O.P.E (Healing Our Princess Esteem) on Facebook at www.facebook.com/Healing-Our-PrincessEsteem-352096198865172/

Gazette Cadet – Georgia’s Journey There’s nothing quite as exciting as having the opportunity to learn about something you are passionate about. I was recently given the opportunity to carry out my year 10 work experience at the District Gazette. I can still remember the moment I found out I would be doing work experience there. It was followed by an obnoxiously loud squeal of utter excitement that my parents swore the whole street would have heard! Being a passionate writer who has wanted to publish a book since the age of 8, I found that learning about the media and journalism in our local community to be inspiring and very interesting. As a teenager, I have always relied on my writing to voice many things I am unable to speak. Writing has always held significance in my life, as it felt like an escape. What an amazing week it was. I was welcomed by a warm and friendly team, all of whom shared a laugh (and a sigh) as we worked tirelessly towards the December deadlines. As we worked together towards the last paper of the year, I was given exciting tasks like assisting with social media updates, artwork designing and of course writing stories (including this one!) Learning about how the District Gazette runs and the busy nature of the paper at deadline time was a thrilling experience. It has been an eye opening and life changing experience that I will cherish. The District Gazette has been the ideal place of work experience for me and I would recommend this to any student wishing to pursue a career in the media or even for those who love writing. Learning about our local community has been wonderful and I am thankful for the opportunity and the memories that were made. Local work experience student Georgia Stoch | Image + Article: Georgia Stoch

PARENTS CORNER

Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community + Neighbourhood Services P: 47218520 E: narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au FaceBook: Parenting in Penrith Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com It is the season for bribery, cajoling, threatening, and losing one’s patience. Tired kids wrapping up a year of school. Lots of parties, performances, concerts, awards ceremonies, etc. Tired parents wrapping up a year of work. Lots of parties and taking kids to all of the above mentioned frivolities. And shopping. In the heat of Summer. Why is there no peace and goodwill in the lead-up to Christmas? This is the time of year where the familiar refrain of “if you don’t be good, Santa won’t come” is heard. This is an empty threat, and kids know it. The parent is not being consistent, immediate, or decisive. And it’s completely and utterly ineffective. It does not focus on desirable behaviour, and it does not teach your child new skills and behaviours. So, what should we do instead? Have a well thought out plan, and communicate it to the kids. Communicate your expectations in advance. Tell the kids the who, what, where, when, why, and how of the particular event. Make sure that you are not going out when it is usually the child’s naptime, or when s/he is hungry. Take a bag of snacks and anything else you might need. Communicate the ground rules. Things like ‘hold my hand in the car park’, ‘stay close to the trolley’. Note that these rules are worded in the positive. Tell the kids what you want them to do instead of what you don’t want them to do. Organise some engaging activities for when there is some waiting time. For example, a Where’s Wally book, some pipe cleaners, a Rubik’s cube, colouring in. Communicate the rewards that the children will receive for desirable behaviour – descriptive praise (immediate!), a trip to the park, an extra story at bedtime. And communicate the consequences if they do not comply – reminder of the rules, logical consequence, quiet time, time out (yes, you can do time out when out), loss of reward. At the end of the event, sit down with the kids and talk about what went well, and what you could do differently next time. I know of a Mum who took her four kids (one was a baby) camping, for a week, by herself, using the above Planning Ahead strategy. What a champion. Like all good plans, you have to be consistent and stick to it. Wishing you all the best.

Swimming and Water Safety with Julie Fletcher Nepean Aqua c Centre and Eva Bory’s Swim School Children are still drowning. Research recently released by Royal Life Saving Australia reported that 965 children aged 0-4 years drowned in Australia over the last 25 years. Accidental falls into water were recorded as the leading activity resulting in drowning, with a lapse in adult supervision cited as the major risk factor in 100% of toddler drowning deaths. Swimming pools were the leading location for drowning deaths among young children in Australia, accounting for 52% (2002/03 – 2017/18). Supervision and swimming skills are absolutely key. “It can only take a few moments for a child to slip away unnoticed, fall into the water and drown”, said Justin Scarr, CEO at Royal Life Saving Society – Australia. “Drowning is often quick and silent”. It is incredibly important that young children learn to swim, and now is the perfect time with the start of summer upon us. Looking for a Christmas gift with true value? Give a gift for life, we have Gift Vouchers available that can be used for swimming lessons or any other products and services, including top brand swimwear at discounted prices. Still haven’t used your $100 Active Kids Voucher? Download and use this festive season to get your kids into swimming lessons. It is also very important that young children are educated about water safety and CPR. If you would like us to bring our free Water Safety Lesson to your child’s school or pre school, just contact me - julie@nepeanswim.com.au. Please stay safe this holiday season, and have a very Merry Christmas.

Ropes Crossing Public School Launch Sport House Names The 775 students of Ropes Crossing Public School recently celebrated the Launch Day of their Core Values and the Sport House Names, which was held last month. Amidst learning about and celebrating their values of Safe, Responsible, Respectful, Excellent Learners - the students have been busily preparing to welcome Western Sydney sporting stars to the school to officially name the Sport Houses after them. Australian Diamond and current Sydney Swifts Netball Player Paige Hadley visited the school and spoke to the students about the skill-level, work and challenges being a professional athlete and team member and what studying means to her. The students in the red Hadley House were thrilled to meet her as she explained she loves being the ‘red house’ as the Sydney Swifts are red to match the Swans AFL team. Current World Champion in both C1 and K1 Canoe Slalom discipline at the recent Rio World Event, Jessica Fox visited and described how honoured and thrilled she felt to have a Sport House at a local school named after her. She hopes that will encourage more young people to participate and try canoe slalom, especially considering the International Centre is located here in Western Sydney at the International Regatta Centre. The blue house is named after her to represent the water she glides on. The community were amazed that Australian Test Cricketer and top batsman Usman Khawaja donated a signed cricket bat and posted on his social media a lovely message to the students outlining how thrilled he was with the honour of being the Yellow Khawaja House. Wallaby and mentor for HeadSpace, Kurtley Beale was also honoured with the inauguration of the Green Beale House. His niece Lahnia in Year 6 said “I am looking forward to seeing my Uncle Kurtley visit our school once his commitments with the Wallabies finish”. The war cries developed and unleashed on the prestigious day were written by the talented Mrs Garnon, who also teaches Year 1 at Ropes Crossing Public School. The students have been busily practising their war cries to show the community their passion towards their sport houses.  (L-R) Australian canoe slalom athlete Jessica Fox, Ropes Crossing Public School student Lahnia and Australian netball athlete Paige Hadley | Image: Michelle Smith

Our Commitment to Give Back

At District Gazette, we have chosen to align ourselves with a charity that is very close to our hearts. We support the Lung Foundation Australia, by giving a percentage of all advertising revenue and hosting fundraising events to support Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, through their IPF Program. In memory of the late, courageous, strong and determined, Wendy Frame

The Lakes Christian College celebrated a milestone in the life of the school on Thursday 1st November. Formally Kindalin Christian School, it has now been 10 years since the name changed to The Lakes Christian College which has enhanced the profile of the College in the local area. To mark this occasion, several other special events were incorporated including Grandparents Day and the Opening of the new High School classrooms. Families and friends enjoyed morning tea with the students and staff. The Annual Book Fair in the library was a focus. This was followed by a celebration assembly where students presented items and guest speakers addressed the gathering. The College was honoured to have the Mayor of Penrith, Councillor Ross Fowler speak about the significance and value of Grandparents; Ms Prue Car, State MP for Londonderry commended the students on their achievement in completing the Premier’s Reading Challenge 2018 and Ms Emma Husar, Federal MP for Lindsay officially opened the new classrooms. The event culminated with the primary school participating in Australia’s largest music program Music Count Us In by presenting their musical arrangement of ‘One Song’. The College also has souvenirs on sale to mark this special occasion.

Getting Ready for Kindergarten Starting Kindergarten is an exciting milestone in every child’s life. As parents, it is normal to feel a little apprehensive about what challenges lie ahead. You might be unsure of routines and how your child might adjust. Is my child ready? What happens if my child has trouble making friends? How can I help support my child’s learning at home? Will my child manage being away from me for an entire day? All these concerns are normal and valid when going through this experience for the first time. It is important to remember that no matter what, your child will feel safe, secure and supported if the home-school partnership is strong and if they are given the chance to adequately prepare for the transition to school. All schools have a transition or orientation programs to introduce your child (and yourself ) to school life. These programs vary from school to school and as each family is different, the program may or may not address all the concerns you may have. To put your mind at ease, we have put together a list of activities you can do in the months leading up to starting school to equip your child with the basics of going to ‘big’ school. 1. Trace name, shapes and letters of the alphabet. 2. Sit and listen to a picture book, answering oral questions about the story. 3. Use scissors to cut straight, wavy and zigzag lines. 4. Colour in pictures and draw. 5. Practice opening packets and containers for lunch and eating from a lunchbox. 6. Learn bathroom skills like locking and unlocking cubicle doors and washing and drying hands. 7. Have some playdates with other children starting Kindergarten (at the same school if possible). 8. Learn to tie shoe laces, use buttons and zippers on clothing.  Starting Kindergarten is an exciting milestone | Image: www.pexels.com | Article: Sara Drebber @ www.educatered.com.au

WHAT'S COOKING

Christmas Tree Cakes Ingredients 370g pkt chocolate cake mix 20g butter 200g white chocolate melts, melted and cooled slightly 1 pkt rainbow choc chips (or mini M&Ms) 6 waffle ice cream cones 2 eggs

Preparation 1. Preheat oven to 180C or 160C fan-forced. Cut out 6 squares of non-stick baking paper each about 22cm square. Stand 6 empty, clean cans on a baking tray and place a waffle cone, pointy end down in each. Place baking paper square onto each cone and gently push in until the paper lines the cone; staple in place to hold shape. Trim off excess paper at the top. Line 6 holes of a medium-sized muffin pan with paper cases. 2. Make up cake mixture with butter, eggs and water according to packet directions. Carefully spoon half the mixture into the paper-lined cones (the weight of the batter will hold the paper down and seal the pointed end). Try to stand the cones as upright as possible though they will lean slightly. Bake for 35 mins until cakes are firm when gently touched. 3. Remove cones from tins and lay on a wire rack to cool for 5 mins. Carefully break cones to release cakes. Peel away paper, cool completely. Meanwhile bake remaining batter in prepared muffin tins for 20 mins or until they spring back to a gentle touch. Cool completely. 4. To assemble, cut the rounded ends from the cone-shaped cakes so that they sit flat. Cut off and discard the domed tops of the cupcakes so they have a flat surface. Working on one at a time use a small teaspoon to drizzle melted chocolate onto the point of the cone-shaped cakes, letting it run down the sides. Before the chocolate sets, sprinkle with rainbow choc chips (or chosen decoration). 5. Spread a cupcake with chocolate and place cone-shaped cake on top. Sprinkle rainbow choc chips around the edge. Repeat with remaining cakes, chocolate and rainbow choc chips. Leave to set. Source: https://www.taste.com.au/recipes/christmas-tree-cakes/ b63124af-778d-4824-8ac0-93632055c412

The First Christmas Tree With Christmas almost here, you may notice the wide range of red and green decorations filling up the shelves in your local supermarket, crowds of people rushing through stores in search of the perfect stocking filler and not to forget the blissful setting up of the Christmas tree. Have you ever stopped for a moment and wondered when and where this jolly Christmas tradition started? How has it managed to imprint itself so finely in the heart and soul of Christmas? There is no doubt that to many it would be unthinkable to celebrate the festive season without the family all coming together to share the experience of decorating the Christmas tree. It’s suggested that out of all the many traditions celebrated during this time, the Christmas tree has one of the most significant and interesting origins. Primarily, it is believed that the first Christmas tree goes way back to the 16th century in Eastern Germany, where a small group of townspeople decorated evergreens with paper roses, sweet fruits such as apples, tinsel and a big variety of ornaments that continue to be used today such as baubles, candy canes and the symbolic angel or star that is placed on the top of the tree to represent Christianity. The tradition only became significantly popular around the mid-19th century, when the upper middle-class families began to follow the footsteps of Queen Victoria, who embraced the decorating of an evergreen each Christmas. Since then, the tradition has spread worldwide, with millions of trees being produced each year and most importantly, millions of families worldwide all coming together to share the Christmas spirit.

PAWS A WHILE

Article Written + Submitted by: Camille Brandt from Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital A: 377 Wentworth Rd, Orchard Hills P: 4736 2027

We are Relocating to Bigger Premises We will be relocating to bigger premises in the next few months. We will be located on the same road as we are currently on, Wentworth Road, but just further down the road. The new premises have been renovated to accommodate a veterinary hospital. The premises are huge! There are double brick walls, 3m high ceilings and a green bull nosed verandah around the front of the building. We will even have a concrete driveway and carpark! There will still be an off leash park in the front yard for you and your dogs to enjoy. We can’t wait!!!!! Camille purchased the veterinary hospital business nearly 9 years ago and there has been steady and continual growth of the business in this time. We started off with 4 staff and have grown to 15 staff members. We have definitely outgrown the current premises! We are unsure of the date of the relocation at this time, as there is still some work to be completed and all the tradesmen go on holiday over the New Year. We will let you know as soon as we know. We are so excited, we cannot wait for you to visit our large country practice! We will keep you up to date on Facebook with any news of the relocation date.

Local Clubs Benefit from World T20 Tournament Funding Local cricket clubs and grounds across the Penrith regions are set to benefit from improved facilities and programs, as part of the $1.96 million NSW ICC World T20 Cricket Legacy Fund. Member for Penrith and Sport Minister Stuart Ayres said the $6 million NSW ICC World T20 Cricket Legacy Fund is especially designed to ensure clubs and players at the grassroots level benefit from the 14 matches to be held in NSW for the ICC World T20 2020 tournaments. “This fund has been established to inspire the next generation of cricketers by improving the quality and quantity of community facilities and will help attract world class cricket matches right across NSW. “Right here in our local area, we are seeing clubs’ benefit from infrastructure upgrades that will allow for more playing time which helps participation growth” Mr Ayres said. Local clubs benefiting from the program include:

• $82,700 for Penrith District Cricket Club to upgrade Rance Oval • $17,500 for Faulconbridge Cricket Club to install new cricket nets at Tom Hunter Park, Faulconbridge • $15,000 for Penrith City Council to install a new concrete synthetic grass wicket at Village Oval, Jordan Springs Cricket NSW Chief Executive Officer Andrew Jones said that the NSW ICC World T20 Cricket Legacy Fund will deliver significant benefits for local clubs and councils, helping to maximise the expected growth in participation resulting from hosting the tournament in Australia. “With more girls and boys, women and men, of all ages playing cricket across NSW than ever, the fund will both support the growth of the sport in local communities and leave a lifelong legacy for one of the biggest sporting events this decade”.

FAITH – ST DAVIDS CHURCH LLANDILO Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Hebblewhite A: Lot 257A Seventh Ave, Llandilo P: 4736 3592 Service Times: 10am each Sunday, with additional services held: 2pm on the Third Sunday + 8am on the Fourth Sunday

To everyone a Holy and Merry Christmas. For many it is a happy celebration, but for others it is far from merry. Overshadowed by the figure of Santa Claus, which has become a boom for business enterprises. Christmas in itself, once understood, is a simple straightforward affirmation of the reality of life with its mystery and stark contradictions. At Saint David’s on Christmas Eve at 11pm the traditional service of Carols and lessons is held. This service outlines in the lessons the long history of religious thought culminating in the birth of Jesus. Following the carol service the Christ Mass is held. Here the meaning of Christmas is affirmed when Holy Communion is shared by those attending. The meaning of Christmas is emphasized: he who was born was Emmanuel: “God with us”. The dedication of ourselves to the example of the Emmanuel is given sustenance by eating bread and drinking wine, partaking of the Body and Blood given for us

before Emmanuel [Jesus the Christ] was executed. As the gospel records are read, the awesome reality of a life in God is affirmed. When the early followers of Jesus looked back to consider the execution what they affirmed was that in Jesus, God had acted and so Jesus is worshipped as the Christ, the given of God. Jesus did not leave a book. What was the awesome reality is his Resurrection which directs in confirming why Christmas is celebrated: technically known as the Incarnation, and as such the call of Christ Jesus for holiness remains a standard challenge down through history. By worship, prayer, honesty in life, honesty with those who are close and in the community, discipline towards what God in Christ expects of us, strengthened by His Holy Spirit, Christmas affirms our hopes and enables us to be merry {from the Old English to ‘celebrate’}

from our family to yours, we wish you a

As another year draws to a close, many of us find ourselves reflecting on the good, the bad and the highlights of the past year. Almost all of us look forward to clocking off for another year, and putting together a list of resolutions or goals to work toward for the New Year. I am a big believer in setting goals so that you have something to focus on and strive to achieve. I help my children to do the same, so they too hold some accountability in setting themselves some new heights. In a world of digital chaos and all things electronic, this Christmas - be there, just BE PRESENT. Your friends, your family, and your kids won't remember what was happening electronically all those years ago - but they will remember the time you spent together.
