Penrith Commuters Can Slash Travel Times Thanks To New Smart Work Hub

Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith and Minister Assisting the Premier of Western Sydney last month launched a new Government-funded work hub that will allow Penrith residents to work closer to home and slash commuting times. Stuart Ayres said the new Penrith Smart Work Hub featured modern, new facilities that will enable business and trades people to carry out duties in a central “hub” facility without compromising on productivity. “Around 33 per cent of workers living in Western Sydney commute outside the region for work. Their average travel time is up to 50 per cent longer than the Sydney average,” Stuart Ayres said.

“By locating Smart Work Hubs in areas with large commuter populations such as Penrith we can take advantage of technology to support smart working practices. “ Stuart Ayres said Penrith’s new facility was part of NSW Trade & Investment’s Smart Work Hub Pilot Program, a NSW Government initiative designed to improve productivity for the State. “We’ve committed $1.5 million towards this pilot to establish five hubs – three in Western Sydney and two on the Central Coast,” Stuart Ayres said. “Each hub is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including fast broadband, wi-fi, video conferencing, meeting rooms, kitchen facilities and IT support. “This latest facility, called ‘iwork@penrith’, is being operated by Trexzon Pty Ltd in partnership with Penrith City Council, which is providing substantial funding support. “It can accommodate up to 40 telecommuters at any one time and also has areas set aside for local tradespeople that can be accessed 24 hours a day for activities such as printing plans or quotes before heading off to a construction site or for invoicing.” NSW Deputy Premier and Minister for Trade and Investment Troy Grant said Smart Work Hubs were based on a successful City of Amsterdam model, which had resulted in annual savings to the city of approximately $14 million. “NSW Trade & Investment’s smart work hub project has the potential to provide a range of benefits, including increased business productivity, decreased infrastructure costs and increased regional economic development,” Mr Grant said. “According to a Cisco Connected Technology World Report from 2010, seven out of 10 people are more productive when working remotely.” For more information on Smart Work Hubs go to www.trade. nsw.gov.au/smartworkhubs

FAITH – ST DAVIDS CHURCH LLANDILO Rev John Hebblewhite A: Lot 257A Seventh Ave, Llandilo P: 4736 3592 Service Times: 10am each Sunday, with additional services held: 2pm on the Third Sunday and 8am on the Fourth Sunday

Two questions have exercised the thinking of many people down through the ages. The attempted answers have produced a wide variety in life style governed by religious and philosophical development. One question is what is the meaning of life? The other is the meaning of death? To enjoy life, to live life to the full is not a given. Rather it is something that is attained by effort, by discipline and in giving. Giving results in satisfaction. Taking simply satisfies the whim of the moment. But in living there can be much sorrow, pain, distress and so it is within this reality that the question of life causes the seeking for answers. So with death. A child dies of cancer, a baby dies at birth are just two examples where death has a sting. So it was that ever since the emergence of humans the question of death has exercised many minds and has found answers in the way belief and practices has been interwoven into life itself. For example, the ancient Egyptians were par excellence in seeking answers. Why life? Why death? Answers abound but none can be proven to be the right one. One dies: what happens? We don’t know! However the Christian faith has added an encouraging dimension as we seek for answers. That dimension is Hope. Perhaps it is Saint John writing some 2000 years ago who best portrays the Christian hope. Saint John had been exiled onto a remote island in the Aegean sea after experiencing terrible persecution for his faith. His writing “Revelation” was the last to

be received into the Canon of Holy Scripture and is a tour de force seeking answers to the question of life and death. Saint John wrote of a vision he experienced: “I saw a new heaven and a new earth for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away. I John saw the holy city New Jerusalem, coming down from God prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. I heard a great voice out of heaven saying behold, the tabernacle of God is with men and he will dwell with them. They shall be his people and God himself shall be with them and be their God. God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes, there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, pain: for the former things are passed away. He that sat upon the throne said: behold I make all things new. Write for these words are true and faithful: it is done. I am alpha and omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is thirsty of the fountain of the water of life freely. He that overcomes shall inherit all things” Rev John Hebblewhite

If you could choose anyone in the world to spend an afternoon with, who would it be? Someone powerful like a politician or business leader? Maybe someone with impressive skills like an artist or musician? Or would you go for people who you know would give you a great time: a comedian or friends you love hanging out with? Most often we like to be around people who make us feel good or who can do something for us. And it’s easy to assume that God thinks like we do. That God would only want to associate with people who live up to certain standard, who have something to offer. But God doesn’t act like we’d expect. In fact his way of doing things is exactly the opposite. ‘God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.

He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things … so that no one may boast before him.’ 1 Corinthians 1:27-29 Surprisingly, God is most interested in rejects. He chooses people that are usually considered unimportant and unimpressive. Why? Because these people know that they have nothing to offer God, nothing that they can boast about before him. In reality no-one is impressive to God but not everyone understands this. Many are blinded by pride in their abilities, assuming that God thinks equally highly of them. God calls us all to trust in him instead of ourselves. To trust in what Jesus’ death and resurrection has done instead of what we ourselves might do. No matter how unworthy, insignificant or low you may feel, God receives you as you are. Don’t look for something to boast about before him, you won’t be able to find it. Police are appealing for information after a suspicious fire near Penrith destroyed one house and damaged another last month. PARENTS CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) NepeanStudent-Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

Do you know a child living in a home where there is a lot of yelling and swearing, throwing things, pushing or hitting? This is called family violence. However, family violence is much more than physical abuse. It also includes: Emotional abuse (such as manipulation, isolation, put-downs, mind games); Financial abuse (withholding money to buy groceries, and other essential items); Sexual abuse; Threats of violence and revenge; Property damage, smashing belongings; Harming pets. Witnessing family violence can be very upsetting and frightening for children. These children live in a “climate of fearâ€?. Family violence is an abuse of the intimate, trusting and safe relationship that a family should provide. 1 in 4 families in Australia experiences family violence. Apart from the emotional impact on individuals, families, and communities, family violence costs the Australian economy $13 billion per year. Many children who witness family violence have been found to have higher levels of behavioural and emotional problems than children who live in a safe and nurturing home. While most children escape without physical injury they may bear emotional scars which in many cases can last a lifetime. They may have poor physical and mental health as adults and their early experience of living with violence may influence the relationships and lifestyles they choose as adults. Violence at home can make a child feel really sad, angry, helpless and confused. Often children think they have done something to cause the violence in their family. Children living with family violence spend a lot of time and energy worrying and feeling anxious about things that they shouldn’t need to. Children should be free to spend their time and energy on growing, playing, learning, feeling safe and loved, and exploring relationships. Children need: • Protection from physical, emotional, sexual, and verbal abuse • To know that bullying, abuse, and violence is not OK • To know that other children have had similar experiences • Encouragement to talk about their feelings and worries • Reassurance that it is not their fault • Support from a trusted adult • Good role models for managing anger and solving problems • Support with schooling • Professional help for behavioural and emotional problems • To know where they can get help in an emergency. Support for the abused parent can improve the parent’s capacity to protect his/her children. Family violence is just plain wrong. There are no possible reasons that can justify one partner being abusive towards another partner or a parent being abusive to a child. Often, we don’t know what to do to help children and families in our neighbourhoods and communities. If you hear family violence going on in a home near to you, the first thing you can do is call the Police. If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, you can ring the Domestic Violence Line for help on 1800 656 463. The Domestic Violence Line is a statewide free-call number and is available 24 hours, seven days a week. It is time for both men and women to say “enoughâ€? – violence is never OK.

Penrith City Library Shines Light on Local History

 Council’s Information Librarian Lorraine Stacker has been coordinating the historical display at Penrith City Library, which includes a document dating back to 1822 announcing the conditional pardon of a local convict.

about the creation of the Returned and Services League of Australia (RSL) and the Gallipoli campaign. As part of the Bicentenary of Penrith celebration program, an historical display is available to view at Penrith City Library throughout the year. This display has been created with help from the local community and includes original artefacts and documents dating back to the 1800s. Penrith City Mayor Councillor Ross Fowler OAM said this year is an important year in Penrith’s history and anyone interested in learning more should pay a visit to the library. “There are so many ways to learn about the history of Penrith, but really there’s only one place to do it, “Cr Fowler said. “In addition to the special history events we have planned, Penrith City Library also has a large collection of local history records and documents held in its Research Room. For more in depth local knowledge, you can even read the digitised version of the Nepean Times (Penrith’s first newspaper) which ran from 1882 to 1962.”

To commemorate the Bicentenary of Penrith and the 100th anniversary of the First World War, Penrith City Library is providing a number of opportunities for people to learn about history in a fun, entertaining and informative way. Penrith City Library will host the 14th Annual History Conference on Saturday 14 March 2015. The conference will focus on the 200th anniversary of Penrith’s first government building, with several prominent historians invited to speak about the early settlement and the people who were instrumental in its development. The remainder of the day will be devoted to acknowledging the district’s contribution to WW1, including information

Prepare to Feed Your City

Join artist Sarah Goffman as she constructs a city made from non-perishable food and household consumables in our Main Gallery. The size and speed, at which it develops as a city, will provide a social commentary upon consumption, excess, waste and also, the generosity of our community and nation. At the conclusion of the project, the city will be dismantled and the goods donated to those in need through our project partners, Ozharvest and Penrith Community Kitchen. We are now accepting donations of non-perishable consumables and household goods ideal items include canned goods, buckets, cardboard boxes, and old shelving units. The deposit boxes are located at the Penrith Regional Gallery, Penrith City library, The Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre and Penrith PCYC. Artist Sarah Goffman states Artists are producers of content and in a postmodern fashion, re-examine the world in a consumer context. We are defined by our consumerism and become products ourselves, through branding and the adoption of marketer’s castings. The commodification of the individual is a phenomenon seen over the last century, through

industrialization and mass-production. Commercially packaged goods are available for consumers all over the world, and in purchasing a certain brand you are identifying with a label and a lifestyle choice. The trash and treasure of culture has been reinterpreted, re-staged, re-analysed and re-authored by today’s artists. Our relationship with stuff and materiality is a minefield of clauses, contained by accumulative materialistic culture and status oriented consumerism versus the desire for a minimal simplicity. We are surrounded by stuff, and have a responsibility to engage with it, “An assemblage owes its agenetic capacity to the vitality of the materials that constitute it.” Bennett, J. 2010 Vibrant Matter: A Political Ecology of Things Duke University Press, Durham North Carolina Walther Benjamin brought us concepts of consumerist activities where the producer and the consumer are both active participants in the economy. Benjamin, W. 1982 The Arcades Project Belknap Press Harvard University Press Cambridge, Massachusetts and London Confronting materialistic culture and making work about it, using it, as ready-mades and re-configuring it into the City of Plenty exhibition at PRG is not a static interaction, it involves donations (and donaters), and most importantly, recipients. The attachment to the reality of the endeavour in the interim is where the art comes in. Visitors to the Gallery can contribute to the building of the city and at various times during the three week residency see the artist in action.

Last month, Nepean Food Services, facilitated by Tanya Hetherington, hosted the February Friendship Day. The group of 14 guests were treated to an exciting morning of activities that centred on ‘friendship’ and finished with lunch with one another. The luncheon began with a welcome and a picture activity. The group chose a friendship picture that best reflected themselves and their thoughts on friendship. They prepared a friendship poem together that they were able to take home and share with family members. The group, led by Tanya, then put their artistic flair and creativity to the test and made ‘friendship bracelets’. Lunch was then served, with friendship slides and music played in the background. All the attendees enjoyed the luncheon and were invited to attend the next one on the 31st of March. A big thank you to Tanya, Ines, James, Christine, Mark, Sandra, Ellen and the team at NFS for making the event a big success.

Penrith City Council is offering support to local community groups wanting to host commemorative ANZAC events. The 2015 ANZAC Centenary Mayoral Grants Program is designed to assist and encourage projects and events which recognise the involvement, sacrifice and service of Australian servicemen and women in the First World War. The small grants of up to $1000 are available to community groups, schools and other educational institutions and nonprofit organisations across the Penrith Local Government Area. Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said the grants have been capped at $1000 to give as many groups as possible the opportunity to commemorate this important milestone. “The 100th Anniversary of WW1 is a significant event and one that our entire community should be able to participate in,” Cr Fowler said “These grants will enable local groups to coordinate special events or projects, and give the community an opportunity to learn about the sacrifice made by those who fought or supported the war, and pay tribute to those who lost their life.” The funding is available now until Saturday 18 April 2015. The Grief of Miscarriage The inconsiderate things people say after a Miscarriage. Miscarriage is a difficult grief to deal with. Many clients have told me the inconsiderate comments said to them following a miscarriage, such as, “At least you know you can fall pregnant and “It’s great that you didn’t get too far into your pregnancy. What you can do after a miscarriage: Share your story As 1 in 4 pregnancies result in miscarriage, there are a lot more women out there to share your story with and they with you. Healing Talking about your grief helps you to heal and deal with it. Understanding your own grief and what you need to do will help you cope with your “New Normal. Create support Share your story, be vulnerable and connect with others who have suffered a miscarriage. This will help create a positive, supportive community. Normalising grief You can help the general community to understand what grief after miscarriage is like. People often believe that you shouldn’t be grieving because it wasn’t a baby yet. Be sure to share your story with others Cait’s passion is to help people who have suffered loss. As a specialist in her field she has helped people to move through their unresolved grief, to feel less isolated and alone. Using her training Cait seeks to empower her clients to breakthrough and rediscover the joys of a full and rewarding life. To help them come to terms with their “New Life without their loved one. Cait offers grief, loss and bereavement counselling for adults, adolescents, children and families in the Penrith CBD. PAWS A WHILE With Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital 377 Wentworth Rd, Orchard Hills Ph: 4736 2027

Chocolate Dangers at Easter Time We all know Easter is a fun time spent with family and chocolate...lots and lots of delicious chocolate! Easter is a great time for the human members of the family, but the infamous Easter egg hunt can end in tragedy for our four legged friends. Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which when ingested by a dog or cat, causes vomiting, diarrhoea, hyperactivity, increased heart rate, restlessness, muscle twitching, increased urination, excessive panting and if left untreated can be rapidly fatal. If your dog does accidentally eat some chocolate it is vitally important that they are seen within 30 minutes to an hour by your local veterinarian. The veterinarian will give an injection to make your pet vomit, which removes most of the toxins from the body. Sometimes, your pet will be hospitalised, where intravenous fluids may be used, an enema or stomach pump may be required, and we may also need to use muscles relaxants and activated charcoal. There are a few simple precautions you can take to ensure that your pet has a safe Easter: • Hide your Easter eggs in areas which cannot be accessed by your pet. • Ensure small children do not give your pet any chocolate. • Ensure all chocolate is kept out of reach from your pets. Dogs have a good sense of smell and will find chocolate in kid’s schoolbags! • Distract your pet with their favourite treats while chocolate is around.

entries will be displayed on the walls of the veterinary hospital. You can download the entry form from our website www. orchardhillsvet.com.au, Facebook page or pop into the veterinary hospital and pick up a copy. Post your entries to Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, 377 Wentworth Road, Orchard Hills, NSW 2748, or drop them in at the veterinary hospital. All entries must be received by 7pm on Wednesday 1st April 2015. Please ensure your full contact details (name, address, phone number, email) are on the back of the entry form or envelope. Winners will be drawn and notified at 10am on Thursday 2nd April 2015. Check out our website for more information. www. orchardhillsvet.com.au or join us on Facebook. UPCOMING EVENTS

designerbody P: 0421 773 984 E: designerbody@live.com W: designerbody.com.au

Are you Still Waiting for the Day That You’ll be Fit, Healthy and Looking Your Best? How many times have you told yourself that you’ll start living healthy tomorrow? Or next week? After you’ve had just one more pizza dinner and one more lazy day on the couch...Then you’ll commit yourself to eating right and exercising regularly, right? It’s time to realise that this line of thinking is a sneaky little trap. One that fools all of us at one point or another. You see, when you put off healthy living to some designated day in the future, you’re putting the responsibility of change on your future self. Tricky, since your future self doesn’t even exist yet. Only you, in the present moment, are capable of making amazing change happen. Being fit and lean is the result of thousands of healthy choices – all made in the present moment. So give your future (fictional) self a break and start making real, tangible progress towards your goal – right now, in this moment. Begin right now by calling or emailing today to get started on an exercise program that will enhance your life and bring your goals from fantasy to reality. Merinda, Designer Body
