Camden Council is thrilled to announce the return of its much-loved International Women’s Day Gala, set to take place on Thursday 6 March 2025, at the picturesque Gledswood Homestead and Winery.
This year’s keynote speaker is none other than Edwina Bartholomew, a celebrated journalist, television presenter, and columnist with over two decades of media experience. Known for her work on Sunrise and her adventurous spirit - skydiving, bungee jumping, and abseiling live on television - Edwina has travelled the globe covering major events and interviewing some of the world’s most notable figures.
Edwina will share stories from her extraordinary career and personal journey, inspiring attendees with her insights on resilience, leadership, and making a difference.
The evening promises to be an unforgettable celebration of women’s achievements, featuring:
• A two-course meal and drinks package;
• An inspiring keynote address by Edwina Bartholomew;
• A Mayoral address;
• The presentation of the Camden Woman of the Year Award; and
• Networking opportunities to connect with like-minded individuals.
Mayor of Camden, Cr Ashleigh Cagney, said the event is a highlight of the Council’s annual calendar, bringing the community together to celebrate the vital contributions of women.
“International Women’s Day is an opportunity to recognise the achievements of women in all aspects of life – from the workplace to the home, and within the community,” she said.
“This year’s theme, Accelerate Action, reminds us that it’s time to turn promises into progress. Together, we can break barriers, celebrate achievements, and create a future where every woman has the opportunity to thrive.
“Our Camden community is full of inspiring women who make a real difference every day. I’m proud to work alongside incredible female leaders, both on Council and within our organisation, as we champion equality and strive to create a more inclusive world.
“This year’s gala promises to be an inspiring and empowering evening, and I encourage everyone to secure their tickets early to avoid missing out.”
Tickets are $110 per person or $1,000 for a table of 10, including a two-course meal, drinks package, and a gift.
Proceeds from the evening will go towards a local charity, soon to be announced.

REBUILDING PUBLIC EDUCATION IN CAM
Camden Council has secured a $4.18 million boost through grant funding from the Department of Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure (DPHI) under the State Voluntary Planning Agreement (SVPA) Funding Program.
This funding will support two key infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing connectivity, safety, and accessibility in the Camden area:
• Park Road, Leppington Detailed Design and Construction – $3.29 million; and
• Byron and Heath Road, Leppington Signalisation Project – $890,000.
Mayor of Camden, Cr Ashleigh Cagney, welcomed the funding, highlighting its significance for the community.
The Minns Labor Government is getting on with the job of delivering much needed upgrades to 15 schools across Camden.

“This is a fantastic outcome for the Camden area, as these projects will provide vital upgrades to support our rapidly growing population,” she said.
“The Park Road upgrade will transform it into a two-way urban collector road, incorporating pedestrian and cyclist pathways, green spaces and improved drainage and lighting. Meanwhile, the new traffic signals at the Byron and Heath Road intersection will enhance safety for school students, pedestrians and motorists.”
The Park Road project, located in Stage 2 of the Leppington Precinct, will include a shared path and footpath, a parking area, flexible green spaces, and a culvert crossing at Scalabrini Creek. Council-led upgrades will integrate with developer-led works to ensure seamless community connectivity.
The Byron and Heath Road intersection upgrade will introduce traffic signals to improve road safety, particularly for students crossing between the school and nearby sporting fields and playground. The intersection is a critical link for local traffic heading towards Eastwood Road, Dickson Road, Rickard Road, and Camden Valley Way.
Cr Cagney expressed her appreciation for the funding support.
“We sincerely thank the Department of Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure for recognising the importance of these projects, and we appreciate the ongoing support from The Hon. Paul Scully MP, Minister for Planning and Public Spaces, and Mr Nathan Hagarty MP, Member for Leppington,” she said.
The grant funding will be allocated over the next three financial years, ensuring the timely delivery of these essential infrastructure projects:
• 2024/25: $2.09 million;
• 2025/26: $444,504; and
• 2026/27: $1.65 million.

Lamingtons and Dumplings: Author
Visits Oran Park
One of the greatest things about Australia is our diverse community. Built on immigration, the fabric of our society is threaded with stories of trials and triumphs in coming to a country that is often described as the luckiest in the world. The skills, talents and tribulations of the life for immigrants is often overlooked, but for Author Pho Yann, it’s an opportunity to publish books.
Pho recently visited Oran Park Library on Wednesday 15th January during the school holidays, to launch and promote her second children’s book ‘Lamingtons and Dumplings’.
“At the event, I introduced myself by providing information on my background as a mother, author and educator. I read my book which was supported by a slideshow so the audience and patrons could see the beautiful illustrations alongside real life image of the places and foods mentioned throughout the story.
“The session was followed by Q&As from the audience and a craft activity, where the children got to make the most gorgeous dumplings and 3D lamingtons. There were light refreshments provided by the Library for the parents. This was all organised by the wonderful Anna Maher, the Children’s Librarian” explained Pho to the Oran Park Gazette.
The idea of ‘Lamingtons and Dumplings’ came to Pho in 2022. “It is inspired by my own personal experience of having a pen pal during my primary years who lived in England. We were connected through a school writing exchange program. Back then, we communicated through the traditional methods of letter writing through a mailing system by post” she reflected.
The book is about two boys who live in different parts of the world and through the world of technology, social media and the internet, learn about one another. They are able to share their lives and learn that although there are many differences they are still very similar through their shared love of food, values, traditions and their family.
Pho’s favourite part about being an author is presenting her books at schools and events in the community, where she can instil a love of reading with her little readers and adults alike. “I want to demonstrate that everyday people can also be authors and inspire children to chase their dreams and that you can do two things you love. In my instance, I’m fortunate because I am both a teacher and author - both were my childhood dreams,” said Pho.
Her next book, to be released later this year, is ‘Sok Sabai’ which means ‘I am safe and happy’ in Khmer. This book highlights Pho’s journey as a refugee, fleeing war torn Cambodia. It is told through a child’s eyes, of learning to speak a new language and adapting to a new country, its customs and way of life.
Following the success of both ‘Spring Rolls and Vegemite Sandwiches’ as well as ‘Lamingtons and Dumplings’, Pho is currently in the final stages of writing her fourth book. The final instalment to her culinary series, which is called ‘Pavlovas and Samosas’.
International Women’s Day
As International Women’s Day rolls around again this year, women, who make up 50.7%* of the population, wait for the gender gap to be released in March. Well, some of us wait and hope for some improvement.
Last year, the results noted a 0.1% decrease in the gender gap, across 146 countries, to 68.6%. It is estimated that in approximately 134 years we will reach parity. That is when everyone, regardless of gender, stands on a level playing field (100%). Roughly five generations.
If you want to see it before you die, perhaps a move to Iceland will be your best chance. They stand at the top of the rankings, at 93.5%. The Nordic countries and New Zealand (83.5%) rank next, making up the top 5.
Now when I talk about gender parity with friends, colleagues and women I meet at random, they talk about “equal pay for equal work”. For most of us, this is the case, especially if you work for the public service. But the real issue, and the reason for such a pay gap, is because professions that are traditionally ‘women’s work’, have a much lower rate of pay, than for roles traditionally classified as men’s work.
The other glaring roadblock to parity is the lack of women in leadership roles. Roles that are more highly paid, and positions of political representation. In Australia, those figures have fallen since 2022.
So, what is it about Iceland that has brought it so close to parity? Do they have a much greater need for traditional women’s work? Do men not work?
No. What Iceland has is the will to reach parity, to make sure that everyone in their society is equal on every count. Iceland has supported women in areas such as education, employment, financial inclusion, representation, discrimination, domestic violence, justice and community safety. And over the past 50 years, Iceland have had a female head of state for almost 25 years.**
And finally, where does Australia stand? 78%. Globally, we are ranked 24th. If you’re thinking that’s not too bad, just remember some of the countries that outdid us: Namibia, Nicaragua, Rwanda, Philippines and Mozambique***, among many more.
And countries who have made the most serious inroads into closing the gap? Ecuador, Sierra Leone, Algeria, Guatemala and The Gambia. Perhaps Australia could take some lessons from them.

Book Review
with severe disabilities, accepted as a family member by a caring family of five. Nonverbal, and with consistent night traumas, he was reluctantly given into care by his mother from age 9-18. His single mother was accepted into the family with her son whenever she chose to visit. There was almost no support from Government Departments, in spite of assurances.
I cannot begin to describe my admiration for this family, and especially the foster-mother who went above and beyond to ensure the boy felt loved and cared for in every way, as well as her family and students at school.
I congratulate her for fitting 48 hours of work into every 24! And for finding ways of alleviating some of the problems, over time.
His foster-mother then became his advocate when he was moved into a group home. Written with heart-felt compassion, through struggling circumstances, showing love and determination for Jonathan’s best.
It is a story one cannot put down. Easy to read, even through the difficult parts. I read it in 7 hours straight, and can thoroughly recommend it!
It is, as the author says, a story that must be told.

Building a Village for Local Mums
Motherhood can be a beautiful journey, but for many women, it also comes with moments of isolation and overwhelm. Recognising the need for connection, Cordelia Asaad founded The Sisterhood of the Travelling Mums in July 2024, creating a thriving community where local mums can support one another and build lasting friendships.
“I started the Sisterhood after experiencing firsthand the challenges of motherhood and the isolation that can come with it,” Cordelia shares. “What began as a small Facebook group has grown into a vibrant community of women who love adventure, connection, and meaningful conversations.”
The group offers a variety of activities, from coffee catchups and playdates to mums-and-bubs fitness sessions. “We also run workshops, like first aid training for parents, and host major events like our Country Picnic Love Affair,” Cordelia explains.
Beyond in-person gatherings, the Sisterhood maintains a strong online presence, with a Facebook group and WhatsApp chat providing real-time support, advice, and encouragement.
Cordelia’s vision for 2025 is ambitious yet heartfelt. “We’re expanding local meetups to reach more mums, developing a mobile app to connect women easily, and hosting more workshops and events, including mum-and-dad nights out and mixers for single parents,” she says. The group is also exploring partnerships and funding opportunities to grow its impact and keep the community thriving.
For Cordelia, the importance of groups like the Sisterhood cannot be overstated. “Motherhood is not meant to be navigated alone,” she emphasises. “This group offers support, social connection, and opportunities for self-care, empowering mums to feel seen, valued, and confident in their journey. A connected mum leads to stronger families and a more supportive local environment.”
The Sisterhood’s mission is clear: to ensure that no mother feels alone. “I’d love to invite any local mums looking for support, fun, and genuine connection to join us,” Cordelia says. “Whether you’re a first-time mum or a seasoned parent, you’re welcome here.”
With plans for continued growth and accessibility, the Sisterhood of the Travelling Mums is fostering a sense of community that reminds mums they don’t have to walk this journey alone. To learn more, join the group on Facebook or connect via WhatsApp. The Sisterhood is ready to welcome you into their village.

Gregory Hills FC to Thrive in 25
Gregory Hills Football Club (GHFC) are ready for their biggest year yet, with the 2025 season soon to kick off.
The M-League competition begins on the 22nd and 23rd of March. GHFC will be one of only 4 clubs to have the full M-League suite this year. The regular season kicks off in early April.
The popular club are still taking registrations for the upcoming season, though vacancies are limited. Both the Junior and Youth registrations are already at 90% capacity.
“Last season, we had just over 850 players. To allow for the continual growth at GHFC, we have had to take on a second field” said Nathan Ierano, President of Gregory Hills Football Club.
The 2024 season would see many highlights, which included 5 teams winning their respective grand finals and the first ever M-League teams assembled (1st Grade and Reserves).
As we move towards the season ahead, Nathan and the Committee are looking forward to new initiatives and developments for the club.
They will be launching Gregory Hills FC TV. This will be their very own free streaming service. Their GHFC TV YouTube Channel is already set up, with growing subscribers.
M-League success will see Gregory Hills FC as one of only four clubs in Macarthur to have the full M-League Suite, including Colts (U21s), Men’s Reserve Grade, Women’s 1st Grade, and Men’s 1st Grade.
M-League Women’s 1st Grade will be a historic first for the club. This is a monumental year as they field their very first
Women’s and Colts M-League Team.
GHFC will be investing in the community in a number of ways:
• Female game. Every female team will receive a brand new, fully custom all-female team jersey!
• Brand new goals for their fields. Improving training and game-day experiences for all players.
• Veo (Two) game camera investment. Enabling game streaming, analysis, and enhanced coaching for their competitive teams.
• Field maintenance improvements. In conjunction with Camden Council, they are giving the clubhouse and fields at Cunningham Park a face lift.
There will be an R17 Academy Partnership. This will be led by ex-A-League and international footballer Iain Ramsay, offering elite training sessions and specialized goalkeeper training for competitive teams.
Macarthur Football Association (MFA) Development Programs will be hosting academy-style training at Cunningham Park. The club are also committed to raising coaching standards, with 25 of their coaches undertaking the Foundations of Football Certification.

ORAN PARK PROBUS CLUB
Article Written + Submitted by: The Probus Club of Oran Park E: secretary.oranparkprobusclub@gmail.com | P: 0410758755
Probus Clubs throughout Australia and New Zealand are social clubs that offer fun and friendship to members of the community who are retired or semi- retired.
Whilst this is a time when many grandparents take on more babysitting duties and enjoy doing so, it is also a time retirees can find they have too much time on their hands. Many of us have thought about how we’d like to spend time in retirement – plenty of jobs around the house and garden to catch up on, more time to spend on various hobbies, take up new ones, and travel at home or abroad for example. Keeping active in our senior years is important for both our physical and mental wellbeing. The downsides of ageing, deterioration in physical health, lack of motivation and the loss of a loved one can lead to loneliness and self-isolation.
Joining a Probus Club can make a difference. At Oran Park Probus Club, new friendships will be forged at coffee mornings, over pub lunches, Boyz Club lunches, and dining events. You could learn new skills or enjoy working on your own craft project whilst having a chat and laugh with others. Join the walking group and exercise your dog at the same time! Love reading? Don’t spend a lot of money on books – there are plenty to choose from at the Book Swap at our monthly meetings. Join your new friends for a movie or a theatre show, join our trivia group, go on a self-drive/carpool outing, a train trip or a coach tour. Our tours officers are working hard to put together this year’s program.
Of course, nothing gets done without a team of volunteers who work hard on the members’ behalf, and becoming a member of the management committee or coordinating an activity or event is a great way to make lifelong friends and have fun along the way!
Visitors are always welcome to attend the general meetings of Oran Park Probus Club, where you can listen to one of our interesting speakers and join members for lunch afterwards. Meetings are held at Wests Lakeside Golf Club, 50 Raby Road, Gledswood Hills, commencing at 10.00am on the first Tuesday of every month, except January and November. Come along to see if what we offer would be of interest to you.
Please contact the Club Secretary for further details, email secretary.oranparkprobusclub@gmail.com.

Local Residents Achieving Home Ownership Dreams Thanks to Labor’s Expanded Home Guarantee Scheme
More than 200,000 Australians have been able to buy a home of their own with a smaller deposit, thanks to the Albanese Government’s expanded Home Guarantee Scheme. This includes nearly 1,800 people in South-West Sydney.
While people are still under the pump with housing pressures, Labor is building Australia’s future, and that means helping Australians build their future with a home of their own.
Under the Home Guarantee Scheme, a portion of an eligible home buyer’s home loan is guaranteed by Housing Australia, enabling them to buy a home with as little as a 5% deposit while avoiding Lenders Mortgage Insurance, which in some cases can be tens of thousands of dollars.
The latest Home Guarantee Scheme Trends and Insights Report found that 1 in 3 first home buyers took up the Scheme in 2023-2024 and that it has helped a range of participants get into a home sooner:
• more than 50 percent of eligible buyers are women
• more than 50 percent of eligible buyers are under the age of 30
• 67,000 eligible participants have acquired homes in regional areas
• 40,000 eligible participants are key workers, including nurses, teachers and social workers
Of the 200,000 Australians supported through the Home Guarantee Scheme, more than 140,000 Australians have been helped since the Albanese Government was elected – more than twice the number that were supported by the former Coalition Government.
This comes on top of Labor embarking on the biggest home building program in Australia’s history, working with the states and territories to improve rental security and ending no-fault evictions.
We can keep building Australia's future by getting more Australians into a home of their own and building more homes across the board or we can go backwards under Peter Dutton, with billions of dollars of cuts to investment in housing.

Worse Than AI And Therefore Much Better?
By now you’ve heard about ChatGPT and its amazing powers of composing and correcting written work. Surely it would be much easier for me to simply tell the AI what I want to write, give it the number of words to fill, and let it do its thing. You might even enjoy it more. After all, there will be no weird grammar, no spelling mistakes, and it might even make better sense!
But... if I were to do that there would be something missing. That would be me. I’m certainly not that important, but there is something about connecting with a real person - and their personality, quirks and all, that helps this little segment find its place among other local news.
Interestingly, this vital sense of authenticity is at the beating heart of the Christian message. God Himself is in the communication business and when He wanted to send the greatest message, He didn’t do it via a text or AI.
Have a listen to how John starts his account of Jesus’s life, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God..” The next sentence is remarkable; “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:1-2, 13 NIV11)
God came to us Himself. He lived as one of us. Jesus ate, drank, sweated, worked a trade, lived in a family, was tempted, rejoiced, was betrayed by friends, and ultimately died on a cross before rising again. It was the very reality of His coming in flesh that assures us that God understands us. It’s the imperfections in fellow humans that assure us of their reality and the contrasting perfections of Jesus that mean we can hear an invitation to join the Holy God. How can we be sure? It was delivered by hand - and that’s as authentic as it gets.

Small Town, Big Secrets
Local author and District Gazette writer Tanya Nellestein has delivered once again with the release of Murdered in Shadows, the second book in her gripping Townsend & Gray series.
Set in the small, New England (US) town of Sergis, this instalment combines slow-burn romance with a taut murder mystery, delving into themes of deception, loyalty, and the resilience of its flawed yet relatable characters.
The novel opens with the shocking murder of a vulnerable local resident, leaving the community shaken and Police Chief Chad Townsend reeling. “For Chad, this case is deeply personal,” explains Nellestein. “The victim was under his protection, and the guilt of that failure drives him to uncover the truth—despite the town’s efforts to keep it hidden.”
Chad is joined by Ashleigh Gray, a former detective from Sydney, whose own tumultuous past adds layers of complexity to both the investigation and their fledgling relationship. “Ash and Chad are still navigating their professional partnership while facing shadows from their pasts,” Nellestein says, “Their romance is slow burning but raw, as they learn to trust one another in the midst of chaos.”
Building on the success of Missing in Shadows, the first book in the series, Murdered in Shadows pushes both the characters and the stakes further. “This isn’t just about solving a murder,” Nellestein shares. “It’s about uncovering the darker secrets of
Marching for a
Cure: Aussies
Sergis and the lengths people will go to protect them.”
Nellestein, who has published 16 novels and won multiple awards, describes the challenge of balancing her writing with everyday life. “Writing a sequel isn’t linear,” she admits. “It’s about expanding the world and characters while maintaining the heart of the story. I’ve had to adapt, writing in small bursts and embracing the process, even when it’s messy.”
The book is already generating buzz among fans of small-town mysteries and slow-burn romance. Packed with twists, tension, and emotional depth, Murdered in Shadows is a must-read for lovers of gripping suspense. “I promised readers it would be worth the wait,” Nellestein says. “This is a story about fighting for justice—and maybe even for love.”

Urged to Take Steps to Help Save Lives from Melanoma
Melanoma Institute Australia (MIA) is calling on Australians to join its national campaign, Melanoma March 2025, to raise awareness and funds to save lives from melanoma.
This national campaign, now in its 14th year, is MIA’s flagship fundraising campaign and involves participants either walking or running at family-friendly events across the country during the month of March. The events, organised by volunteer committees impacted by melanoma, are also a wonderful opportunity for the community to come together to honour lives lost to melanoma and support those impacted by the disease.
Melanoma March events will be held every Saturday and Sunday throughout the month of March.
This year, all funds raised will go towards the updating and clinical promotion of the National Melanoma Clinical Guidelines. This was a key priority identified in the 2022 State of the Nation in Melanoma Report and is vital to ensure melanoma patients across Australia benefit from current evidence-based clinical best practice. The National Melanoma Clinical Guidelines are not funded by Government, and so funds raised at Melanoma March 2025 will provide the necessary support to help achieve our mission of zero deaths from melanoma and also to lower the overall health burden from this disease.
This year’s campaign also aims to shine a spotlight on the
dangers of tanning and the need for all Australians to follow the five sun safe rules to prevent melanoma and other skin cancers.
Australia has the highest melanoma rates in the world.
One person is diagnosed with melanoma every 30 minutes and one person dies from the disease every 6 hours. It is the most common cancer affecting 20–39-year-old Australians.
‘This is our biggest Melanoma March campaign yet, with 28 events spanning the country and reaching every single state and territory,’ said MIA CEO Matthew Browne. ‘It is heartwarming to see Australian communities joining together in the fight against this disease,’ said Matthew.
Australians are urged to register now for a Melanoma March event near them.
Those who can’t attend an event can still support the campaign by getting active and hosting a March Your Way activity with friends or individually.
To register or donate to Melanoma March, go to www. melanomamarch.org.au.
