A Mother’s Strength
Tracey Dakin and her three children – Image supplied.
This Mother’s day, for many will consist of celebrating with their mum’s and showering her with gifts to show their appreciation of the hard work and unconditional love that only a mother can show. For one family, Mother’s day will be about strength, courage and survival. Tracey, a local resident and single mother of three children has only been given a few months to live if she cannot receive the treatment that is needed to cure her of a meningioma - a tumour in the membranous layers surrounding the brain. Tracey and her family need our help. A traumatic car accident in 2005, found Tracey and her family left with injuries which involved rehabilitation, physical disability and emotional scars for all of them, in 2014, Tracey started to experience headaches and unusual dizzy spells. A brain CT revealed that Tracey had the tumour. Surgery was performed to remove as much of the tumour as possible but in 2015 the tumour re grew with a second operation and radiation treatment needed. Finally feeling like the road to recovery was in her path Tracey unfortunately had a fall at home and broke her hip. Due to a slow recovery, a CT scan revealed that whilst the radiation had worked on the first tumour further meningioma were growing outside the radiation area. Continued pg.8

Route 896 Expanded to Better Serve Growing Communities Member for Camden Chris Patterson last month announced an extension to the 896 bus route between Campbelltown and Oran Park from 26 April to better meet the needs of customers in the Camden area. The 896 bus will now travel down South Circuit between Peter Brock Drive and Oran Park Road, and then continue on Peter Brock Drive to the Northern Road, servicing the burgeoning new residential development to the east and west of Oran Park Town Centre. It will also serve the new suburb of Arcadian Hills being developed west of the Northern Road. “This extended route provides people living between Oran Park Town Centre and the Northern Road with a link to Campbelltown,” Mr Patterson said. “Customers won’t have to make any adjustments to their schedules - there will still be the same number and frequency of regular bus services.” “We’ve been keeping a close eye on the Oran Park area and with this extension will be better able to meet the needs of customers living in this thriving community.” Customers are encouraged to plan their trip in advance by visiting www.transportnsw.info They can also download real-time transport apps and receive bus service updates for their area by following the Transport Info Twitter handle @BusesSouthWest. Alternatively, they can call 131 500. The extension forms part of the NSW Government’s 2015/16 Growth Buses Program, which builds on a commitment to deliver a modern transport fleet for customers, with funds also set aside for the procurement of new trains and ferries.

HARRINGTON PARK MEDICAL PRACTICE & SKIN CANCER CLINIC
Oran Park streets were filled with excited residents last month as the town came alive with yet another successful Oran Park Festival held at Oran Park Anglican College. With anticipated large crowds, it didn’t disappoint with each year getting bigger and better than the one before. Holding a car and bike show proved popular with motor enthusiasts as well as a large carnival area for the little and big kids to enjoy. A stand out crowd pleaser, Helicopter rides seemed to be the highlight of the day with wide smiles on those who braved the quick 7 minute flight above Oran Park Town and surrounding areas. Families enjoyed entertainment from local artists and Children performing as well as a silent auction, rock climbing wall, student art display, College tours, and a visit from Batman and the Batmobile. A large variety of market stalls, food outlets, pony rides, petting zoo and book fair allowed for a fun filled day for the whole family. Oran Park Festival has been an annual event running for over 3 years now and we look forward to seeing it grow with each year.

Develop Strength of Body and Mind
Better Than Animals It’s holiday time and our household took the bi-annual trip to the cinemas to see the latest kid’s offering from Disney. Zootopia is a visual feast filled with beautiful animation, a gloriously conceived world of big and little animals, and a bustling metropolis that draws in our young hero Judy Hopps as she seeks to become the first rabbit cop. She meets a streetwise fox (he’s sly get it?) called Nick Wilde and our buddy drama unfolds. We learn how the current utopia of animals living side by side (Zootopia!) has been made possible through a school play explaining how the various species evolved past their desire to think of the world as prey and predator. The mystery in the storyline is that someone is causing predators to revert to their ‘savage’ state so that they’re turning on the prey animals. There’s some great side points here about terrorism and the power of fear to control the masses, however the central message is clear - we’ll all get on if we can just overcome our baser natures. I think that just beneath the feel good message there’s a structural problem in the movie. You see some animals are predators and some will never be. Intriguingly we’re never shown what tigers eat in Zootopia. The issue with making getting along about overcoming our baser natures is the very acknowledgement of baser natures - the suggestion that there are real differences deep in ourselves which polarise us to the point we should be naturally fearful. The Bible gives an even better narrative. All humanity regardless of race, religion, skin colour, education, or gender is created in the image of God. We learn each human to be deeply valued in their own right and profoundly equal. God also says that sin is what scars us, causes us to turn on each other, and to believe the lie that some are better than others. Ultimately it’s not evolution or suppression that opens the door to harmony - its finding forgiveness in Jesus and engaging with love towards our fellow humans that gives hope of true harmony. Casino Night for Cancer
Cancer can strike when you least expect it, and many of us have either been affected or know someone who has battled the terrible disease, whether it’s Breast, Prostate, Ovarian, Stomach or the many other various Cancer’s that plague this world. We always feel the need to help where we can, offer funds or volunteer our time to help those in need. Sometimes we feel helpless that we can’t do anything to help cure these deadly diseases, which is why Rachel Elliott, a former cancer survivor is hosting a fun Casino themed fundraiser event this May to raise money for Ovarian Cancer. After being diagnosed with stomach cancer in 1999, Rachel has continued to stay positive for her family and has made it her
mission to make a difference in other women’s lives who may be going through the same pain as she once did. Committing her time and funds to attend the Ovarian Cancer Australia Walk for Women 2016 with her 73 year old mother, Rachel and Rosalie will trek for 5 days on the Great Wall of China this October. Although they are funding the trip themselves, they are urging people to attend their fundraiser to help reach a goal of $4000 that will be presented directly to Ovarian Cancer Australia. “I know I am going to make a difference in a woman's life by doing this walk. I encourage you all to listen to your bodies, trust your instinct and always ask for a second opinion if the first doesn't sit right’’ say’s Rachel. A fundraiser with a difference, the Casino night is sure to be a fun filled local event for all who wants to help make a difference. The fundraiser is held Saturday 21st May at Harrington Grove Country Club. Doors open at 6.30pm and casino opens at 7pm. Canapes are included. Article Written + Submitted by: Fr David Catterall MTh Parish Priest @ St Mary MacKillop Catholic Parish Oran Park P: 02 4648 2226 W: www.marymackillopparish.org.au A: 94 Oran Park Drive, Oran Park NSW 2570 Facebook: www.facebook.com/oranparkparish Twitter: www.twitter.com/oranparkparish Over the last 10 months, since the Catholic Parish of St Mary MacKillop Oran Park was founded, we have been celebrating our weekend Church services (Masses) in the library at St Justin's Primary School. This is all soon to change as we move into our new Church and Parish centre. This building, that is located on Oran Park Drive (near the entrance to the Catherine Park Estate), is best described as a purpose built structure and will operate as our Church and Parish centre until a more permanent structure is required as the community grows. To coincide with this move into our new home, we will be launching an extra Church service (mass) on Sunday evenings at 5pm. This additional mass will see our growing Parish have 4 weekend masses (Saturday afternoons at 5pm, Sunday mornings at 10am and Sunday evenings at 5pm all at our new Church and Parish centre on Oran Park Drive - as well as an 8am Sunday mass at our northern mass centre at St Mary Mother of God Church, Leppington). While our new building will be open from the weekend of 7/8 May, we look forward to its blessing and official opening by Bishop Peter Ingham on Saturday 28 May at 5pm. For information about our new Parish centre or to RSVP to attend the official opening please contact our Parish office. Fr David Catterall MTh

A cuddly teddy is sometimes all it takes to make a child smile even when they have every reason not to. Sick, injured, homeless and distressed children around Macarthur have been receiving these cute little teddies for many years courtesy of volunteers who spend their time knitting, stuffing and sewing. Camden Red Cross hope to continue this legacy. “Knitted with a bit of love and not much money, they have such an impact and bring so much joy” says long standing knitter and Camden Red Cross representative Vicki Katon. Teddies are knitted by volunteers and then distributed by the Camden Red Cross to many hospitals, ambulance officers, shelters and organisations who deal with children in distress or trauma. The Oran Park Craft group is seeking volunteers to assist in knitting these cute creatures. Meeting in the Oran Park Community Room every Wednesday between 10am-2pm. For more information contact Billie on 0418 668 823 or pop by and say "Hi!". In May, we celebrate National Volunteer week. So many local residents dedicate their time and sometimes money to assist and help those in need. Let’s celebrate those people and thank them for the wonderful work they do. Nations Volunteer week runs from the 9th-15th May. Oran Park resident, Nate after his surgery with his very own teddy. Photographs | Renee Garcia Continued from pg.1
A Mother’s Strength After experiencing arm and leg tremors and physical weakness with unfortunate results showing the tumours continuing to grow, Tracey was hoping to begin an experimental chemotherapy treatment called Lutate. “In the majority of cases, Lutate stabilises or improves disease that has previously been progressive, and some patients achieve remission.” NSW Cancer Institute / NSW Agency for Clinical Innovation Nuclear Medicine Network, January 2015. Following further operations A CT revealed the remaining tumour had doubled in size in four weeks. Her meningioma was now classified as an extremely rare and aggressive Grade 3 malignant meningioma. This has also left Tracey unable to walk, use her right arm or to care for herself. Spinal fluid has been leaking out of the sutures in her head. A rare treatment costing $4,000 every 8 weeks, Lutate is not funded by the government so Tracey’s family needs all the financial support they can get. A MY CAUSE account to try to help ease the financial burden for her family and provide some financial security for her kids has been set up. Every mother deserves to see their children grow up, lets help make Tracey’s life full of happiness for her and her 3 children. For donations please visit www.mycause.com.au/ page/121608 or contact Lucinda Ostle on 0425364799 for more information.
It's Quirky, It's Fun, It's Different!
As quick as the Macarthur region is growing, so too is the hospitality industry, and we as locals are gifted with many choices when wanting to catch up with friends for a drink on the weekend or have an intimate meal with loved ones but it’s no secret that for a long time our local area had been lacking that “trendy, inner city vibe” type establishments. That is until Upstairs at Fred’s came along. From the moment you walk into the old building with high ceilings and fresh soothing and very distinctive interiors you are swept up in that chic stylish vibe that would only be found in places like Newtown and Surrey Hills. Steve Wisbey, a well know businessman in the Macarthur region, along with friends Mandy Avinou and Katie Palmer brought a lifetime dream a reality with over 12 months of planning to create the Tapas Restaurant that’s now known for its quirky personality amongst local residents. Upstairs@fred’s opened in September last year in Argyle Street Camden, above the old Whitemans building. Boasting a Private
Rock & Roll VIP Room that can be opened up onto a spacious verandah, Private Dining Room and Fred’s very own, very sexy feminine Champagne Room that is sure to attract the ladies. A baby grand piano is a stand out feature in the main dining area that is beautifully played for patrons on Friday & Saturday evenings. Fred’s also offers an extensive wine and champagne list and mouth-watering cocktails that’s sure to excite. It’s the kind of place that friends and relaxed dining feels so comfy you just want to belong however Steve says “Fred’s really has a personality that adult diners will love, it’s funky and stylish, but it’s not for everyone. It’s not targeted at a family restaurant market” So, mum’s and dad’s here is your chance to leave the kids at home, have a date night, with adult conversation and enjoy the relaxed mature atmosphere that Fred’s can offer. A tapas restaurant isn’t just about the vibe or the quirky décor. It’s also about the food. Food brings people together and that’s why they only have the best serving up the meals. Passionate Portuguese head chef Marcio, has created imaginative finger foods and tapas specialities, decadent desserts including his famed Portuguese Tarts, and gourmet Pizza. Fred’s is Cheese and Charcuterie boards and it’s about share platters and friends coming together to share the food experience. Upstairs@Fred’s is available for private functions from Hens & bucks parties, baby showers, commiserations and all sorts of other celebrations. Pop in Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday night until 12:30am … Lunch on Friday from 11am and all day breakfast Saturdays and Sundays. For Function Enquiries or bookings call 0246 555 369 or Steve 0429 122 557. Upstairs @ Fred's, it's quirky..it's different. Image supplied.

Understanding Animal Behaviour
Animal behaviour is a fascinating subject. With cats and dogs interacting so closely with us in our day to day lives, what we do can strongly influence what they do. While living as family pets, dogs expect clear signals from the humans that make up their social group. Dogs love predictable routine and consistent responses when they interact with people and other animal companions. Predictability makes things clearer, and change and inconsistency on a regular basis can create anxiety. If a dog is misunderstood, or confused because of unclear human-dog communication they can become stressed. Often, anxiety and insecurity can lead to growling, baring its teeth or snapping if the dog becomes very frightened or feels threatened. Cats don’t look to their human family members for so much structure but they still like stability and routine. For cats, it’s all about control. To feel in control cats will carefully mark their home using facial marking. A release of pheromones occurs each time a cat rubs its face against furniture or nuzzles up
against your legs. Anxiety for cats can be triggered by anything that alters their sense of control such as inadvertent disruption or removal of their marks by moving furniture, bringing in new furniture, or doing building work. Your cat may also be affected by any change in your home: a new family member, a new pet in or around your home, anything that is different to normal. Canine and feline pheromones offer a way to make dogs and cats feel less anxious helping prevent unwanted behaviours. Adaptil (canine pheromone) comes as a collar that your dog can wear providing constant reassurance to dogs during new experiences and fearful situations often associated with causing stress. Feliway (feline pheromone) comes as an in wall diffuser to be placed in your cat’s favourite room to mimic the natural facial pheromone providing a reassuring message. MONEY MATTERS

How Much Will You Need in Retirement? Knowing how much money you’ll need in retirement is a crucial ingredient in your plans. While it’s difficult to be certain, it’s possible to come up with some broad numbers based on your age, your intended lifestyle and how you expect your investments to perform over time. There are a couple of different ways you can arrive at a figure for annual expenditure in retirement: • One theory states that you should aim to have an income that is between two-thirds and three-quarters of your final pre-retirement salary. • The Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia (ASFA) Retirement Standard provides slightly more precise figures: $32,656 per couple for a modest lifestyle. $56,406 per couple for a comfortable lifestyle. Lump Sum Amount Calculating annual expenditure during retirement is only the first step. Whatever figure you arrive at, you’ll need to factor in life expectancy in order to come up with a final retirement lump sum. The average life expectancy for a male aged 65 is around 19 years and for a female aged 65 is nearly 22 years. Bear in mind that you should be preparing your finances based on a best case scenario – that you live longer than the average. If you’re not yet 65, you should also remember that life expectancy has been steadily increasing for most of history. Again referring to the ASFA Retirement Standard estimates of the lump-sums required are as follows: • $430,000 for a single for a comfortable lifestyle. • $510,000 for a couple for a comfortable lifestyle. These figures assume receipt of part age pension and are in today’s dollars using 3.75% AWE as a deflator and an investment earning rate of 7%. Feel Free to Speak to us While the above figures are useful and provide food for thought, they can only ever be a guide since they don’t take into consideration your personal financial circumstances. We will help you calculate figures that are specific to you. We can help you decide what you consider to be a reasonable standard of living in retirement based on how you plan to spend your time. We can quantify this for you in terms of an annual income and then scale this up to produce a final retirement lump sum based on life expectancy and likely investment returns. Last month saw some great highs on the sporting fields in our local area. The Oran Park Chargers Junior Rugby League Club have started an exciting new chapter in the clubs short history by taking official handover of the clubs new home ground at Jack Brabham Reserve. The club is looking forward to many wins at their new home ground. If you would like to get involved in the club contact info.oprlfc@gmail.com. In Cricket news, a big congratulations is in order for local boy Joel Rush, a wicket keeper for the Oran Park Cricket Club for being selected in the NSW under 14’s Emerging Blues team. What a great achievement. We wish him the best on his exciting journey. If you would like to play cricket for Oran Park Cricket Club, visit oranpark.nsw.cricket.com.au.
