LOCAL nonprofit host rocking fundraiser This February, the Neighborhood Legal Services Program (NLSP) presented Justice Rocks 2016, where attendees enjoyed drinks, live music, and light hors d’oeuvres. The concert was hosted at Glover Park hotspot Mason Inn, and entertainment was provided by local band Deaf Dog and the Indictments. The event was a huge success for the NLSP team, with a turnout of over 100 guests and thousands of dollars contributed to the organization. The concert highlighted the life-changing work that the NLSP is doing throughout Washington while raising awareness for the organization’s cause. For 50 years, the NLSP has provided free civil legal services to DC’s low-income residents. The NLSP provides assistance in the form of safe and affordable shelter, protection for victims of domestic abuse, access to healthcare and public benefits, as well as stabilizing family relationships and employment services. The live entertainment of the evening, Deaf Dog and the Indictments, is the world’s only almost-all-judge band since 2005. Among its members, Deaf Dog and the Indictments counts four D.C. Superior Court associate judges, three magistrate judges, and on the drums, one psychologist. They brought their unique mix of Motown, blues, and rock-n-roll classics to the concert. Attendees danced the night away and insisted on a double encore from the band. 34 ISSU E N O . 8

Reflections on design trends by

I am a total anti-trends designer. Perhaps my architectural education is to blame, as I am always interested in cocreating with my clients interiors that are dateless in character, but that are also referential to design history. When presented with the question of what would I see as new design trends for 2016, I considered the question from a different point of view. First, I questioned if any of my own design interests and signature moves of the last five years could now be en vogue. Did I unconsciously foresee a design trend in-the-making, or was I influenced by earlier design creators? Take for example the proliferation of rose and gold metals substituting the ubiquitous stainless steel and polished chrome finishes. I have been mixing metal colors in rooms for quite some time now. In a recently completed kitchen near Dupont Circle, I mixed a copper-toned UJ1 light pendant by Jorn Utzon over the kitchen island with all stainless steel appliances, and with an antique guilt-framed painting of a serene landscape. But fashion and jewelry designs have mixed metals for years. My classic Trinity ring, designed by Louis Cartier in 1924, with its intertwined white, yellow and rose gold bands is a good example – it goes well with anything. A couple of years ago, I also started stacking three narrow Bulgari B.zero I rings, each with a different gold color, and presto, the Roman jewelry house has just released a three-golds-in-one thicker version.

on the other hand, any design trends list can't do without paint color predictions. Let's consider the "gray is the new beige" slogan. Is it really that new? In the mid-1940's Christian Dior painted his maison de couture in Paris' Avenue Montaigne in what it is now referred as Dior-gray. This very quickly became interior designers' favorite selling mantra for gray colors. Let's remember that Gabrielle Chanel hated Dior's new Look; she liked beige.

I started using Farrow & Ball's gray colors about ten years ago: elephant Breath, skimming stone, Pavilion Grey, Charleston Gray, Ammonite, to name just a few. My goal was to find several Armani-esque grey/beige tonalities that could live harmoniously in an entire house. Recently, I was excited to see that this British paint company, with its edited and controlled collection, has expanded the gray palette range in their neo-Boheme color introductions for 2016. These new grey palettes are warmer, more beige based. I trust Chanel would have been happy. Lastly, I am a true believer that every room should have a touch of whimsy. one great opportunity for introducing whimsical touches are decorative light fixtures. We have seen our share of sputnik-like chandeliers, as well as those organic pendants with multiple glass sticks or bubbles. However, I have always preferred those with minimal-whimsical gestures. My old reliable ones were classic modern lights by Cedric Hartman, Achille Castiglione or serge Mouille. Today, I like Jaime Hayon's Passepartout collection for the Danish manufacturer & Tradition (through Furniture from scandinavia Gallery in Georgetown). These fixtures are quietly surreal and minimally self-conscious, but they can be a statement in any type of room. What I recommend to homeowners for 2016 is to take a personal trending class – exercise now, reconsider the past, and start creating new predictions.
